The .pdf format - short for Portable Document Format - was really intended for display and distribution, not direct editing. This means that finding a good, freeware PDF editor can be a bit tricky. The most popular application used for opening PDF files is Adobe Reader, but as an editor it's rather primitive - all you can do is fill out forms (and even that may not work with scanned documents). In this article you'll find a short overview of PDF editors in general and a description of the two best freeware .pdf editors I've found. To really edit PDF files you will need to download and install additional software. However, most .pdf editors can be rather pricy, ranging from $20 up to several hundred dollars for the more advanced programs. Some also have a free trial version that you can use for a few weeks without paying a cent. A few editing tools are totally free, or even have an online version (more on that later). Overall, downloading a shareware editor can be the best option if you only need the advanced features for a while. Either free or commercial, all PDF editors usually come with some subset of these features : PDF merge - combine multiple PDF files into one. Page editing - insert, delete or reorder pages. Change PDF security settings. Fill out forms, including forms that aren't supported by Adobe Reader. Create and design new forms.

Add annotations, comments or drawings.

More advanced PDF document editors may also let you change existing text and can come close to (but never quite reach) a fully featured word processor. The best example of this kind is, in my opinion, Foxit PDF Editor - a shareware tool that includes all of the aforementioned functionality and then some. You can download a trial version for free. However, while powerful, this .pdf editor doesn't really possess the "ease of use" factor of, say, MS Word or Open Office Writer. For simple tasks, the free online editor PDFVue is probably a better choice. It has an intuitive interface, doesn't require installation and works in most web browsers, which means you don't have to worry about the editor being compatible with your operating system. On the other hand, it lacks some advanced features, like editing the text that's already in the document. So pick the right tool for the job and start editing those PDF's!

A bonus tip : you can edit a PDF file in your favorite word processor if your first convert the document to the program's native format. For example, you can use a free pdf to word converter to edit .pdf files in Microsoft Word.
