The dictionary defines an Artifact as, “...an object made by a human being, typically an item of cultural or historical interest.” Steven A. Jackson photographs his subjects with an intrinsic awareness of the rich history encapsulated in crumbling adobe walls and weathered wood. Whether depicting an aging structure that is still in occasional use, or the near-skeletal remains of a building that has been abandoned for the better part of a century, the photographs invite the viewer to imagine the stories that played out within the walls. As a whole, the images selected for ARTIFACTS convey the weight of time and the passing of generations.
Jackson’s background is in traditional “wet” black and white photography, but all his recent work has been totally digital – utilizing the genre’s ability to create a subtle use of color that is reminiscent of toned black and white images.
Steven A. Jackson has lived in Santa Fe for over fifty years and has shown frequently at New Concept Gallery.
