In 1962, Ann Hosfeld graduated from the Cooper Union Art School in New York City, where she studied primarily with the second-generation Abstract Expressionist artists. After working in New York galleries for a number of years, she moved to Los Angeles in 1968. There, she was captivated by the lush tropical plants that surrounded her. This fascination expanded during her numerous trips to Puerto Vallarta and the banana plantations of Yalapa, and she started sketching and painting extensively while on her trips. While many of these early works were realistic, her work evolved to feature abstracted imagery of natural forms, with an emphasis on the interplay of light and shadow shapes.
Tropical Variations will be the first show at New Concept Gallery to focus on these early works created in Los Angeles and Puerto Vallarta. The show will feature several works from the private collection of the artist, including many which have never been exhibited.
