ust in case you had not seen the news recently, the wait to find out what happens with Brexit goes on, and it is a worrying time for our sectors and the UK public. Hopefully the future will become clearer on or before 31st October so that at least everyone can get on with a clear plan for the future.

At Fast Food Professional, we are very lucky to work with some of the strongest companies in the sector and the wider food service industry and we are both pleased and excited to feature one of the long-standing names and brands in this issue and on our front cover, Pukka Pies.

Going back to the early 1960’s Storers’ Homemade Pies have set the standard for the Fish and Chip and Takeaway markets for pies. Long before Jamie Oliver coined the phrase, Pukka Pies chose the name as a “fun and fashionable Hindi-derived word for all things genuinely, properly good”.

With Pukka Pies still being a family owned independent company is also a common factor with many of the leading supply companies that we work with and it is very satisfying for us to have these business relationships.

I grew up in a family business, and in my early career, I spent some years working in the Mars Group, another family owned company. The great thing about these companies is that they tend to base their attitudes to the business, suppliers, customers and their workforce on core philosophies and principles relating to quality, people and the mutuality of benefit to everyone that comes into contact with the business. If everyone gets equal benefit, you usually have a very strong and sustainable business for many years in the future.
