At New College, experience the kind of exceptional education that prepares you to be your best self.

a Florid ?

A place that’s home to originals like you, who love to learn.

of

It is a place where bright, bold free thinkers come to connect and thrive. A place for individuality, for curiosity.

Your education. Your way. At New College, you’ll help create your own individualized degree plan. You’ll work with your faculty advisor to build an academic “contract” each semester instead of a one-size-fits-all traditional degree program.

Every New College journey culminates in a senior capstone project or thesis, which serves as your grand finale–your project, your way–from a research paper or film to an art exhibit. As a New College student, you’ll thrive on the freedom to take risks and develop the self-reliance to achieve your goals.

“The number one thing that attracted me to New College is the level of academic freedom that students get. You can create your own classes, do coursework in the areas that interest you, all without being constrained to a GPA. You can make your education what you want to make it.”

– Evan Hunter, 2022 Graduate

“I think New College really helped me foster this idea of constantly learning and engaging, and not being afraid to try new things (even if I won’t do as well as I think I will). Because of my experience at New College, I just really encourage students now to pursue interdisciplinary education in that way.” – Giulia Heyward, 2018 Graduate Renowned journalist and former fellow with The New York Times

Concierge-style career prep. Want résumé-building, real-world skills that set you apart from the pack? At New College, you’ll get the highest-caliber career resources, propelling you to the future of your dreams by the time you graduate. From day one, you’ll be paired with your very own nationally certified career coach/advisor at the Center for Career Engagement and Opportunity (CEO). It’s a luxury that larger colleges simply can’t provide.

You’re not a number. Why be a letter? No letter grades at New College. Your professors will give you in-depth evaluations on your coursework that tell your story, highlight your success, and show your promise. Yes, we have small classes. Intentionally. Forget giant auditoriums with hundreds of students. Here, your professors (also your closest mentors) know you by name. With a 6-to-1 student-to-faculty ratio and an average class size of 11, you’ll never be overlooked.

Our grading methods

Sample student narrative evaluation for Research Methods in Psychology course: PAPERS: All 3 papers were strongly satisfactory. You demonstrated excellent writing style, organization and logic in each one. The explanations of your studies were thorough and you used the literature to explicitly state your goals and hypotheses. These were excellent and showed your critical thinking skills and effective communication of your ideas. These showed careful thinking about the designs and the relation of your data to the past literature. These were informative and produced concrete new knowledge based on your study. Excellent work across the board. FINAL PROJECT: Your final project examined patterns of interpersonal similarities in college student seating choices in the cafeteria. This was a logical extension of the literature you cited. Your talk was good overall; you knew your material well, expanding clearly on the content of your slides. The methods were explained well, but the results went by really fast; given that you used a different stat than we had used in class, you really needed to explain it like you had done for me in the emails. The comments on the limits of the design were insightful, and showed you were thinking carefully about what your data might mean. You did offer some ideas for new research; try to be as specific as you can there too; expanding on the idea and its reasons will lead to a new study more readily. OVERALL: The work on exams and papers indicates that you have a strong mastery of both the course concepts and their applications, as well as a very effective writing style. The papers showed you have excellent skills synthesizing new information and integrating past research with yours. Excellent work all around and it was a pleasure to read your papers and exams.

Planning your New College degree. A New College education is all about you—your vision, your passions, your originality. As you work with your faculty advisor on your individual contract each semester, you’ll outline your academic and personal goals for the upcoming term. Along with traditional courses, you’ll explore new subjects through labs, tutorials and Independent Study Projects (ISPs). The academic year consists of two 14-week semesters and a four-week January Interterm devoted to independent study. Faculty choose between semester-long and seven-week courses based on which format is best suited to the subject matter. If you’re joining us with coursework from another college or exam results (AP, IB, AICE, or CLEP), ask your admissions counselor to help you get a transfer credit evaluation toward these requirements, and see how they apply toward your degree.

For your New College degree, you’ll need successful completion of:

“The independent learning and critical thinking that was integrated into so many of the courses I took at New College have been immensely helpful. Being independent while still being able to seek advice and communicate your ideas to others is a major theme in scientific research, and I think New College was uniquely poised to prepare me for that.”

The originality of living on campus. Many Novos live on campus–either in the architecturally lauded I.M. Pei residence halls, the Dort and Goldstein apartment-style suites, or other customized housing arrangements. You will make lifelong friendships. You’ll also live with students you might never encounter otherwise. And that’s intentional. Our Living Learning Communities (LLCs) are created for just that kind of interaction. These residences are meant to foster environments for shared experiences, staffed by full-time administrators who help enhance your academic and social life. Some LLC themes are: Pride, Sustainable Living, Outdoor Adventure, and Health and Wellness. Where do you see yourself?

With New College as his launching pad, Joshua Ingram’s out-of-this-world research has gained national momentum. He earned second place in a major project competition for his analysis of solar flares. He has interned at some of the world’s most prestigious scientific institutions, including HarvardSmithsonian Center for Astrophysics and NASA. And his academic discoveries as an undergrad were groundbreaking.

ngram, 20

Ingram credits much of this success to support he received from his professors. On top of that support, he also earned his bachelor’s degree debt-free due to New College’s affordable in-state tuition and fees. And he is the first person in his family to earn a college degree. “I was looking at other colleges’ prices, class sizes and programs, but decided I really wanted to go to New College because it was so affordable,” Ingram said. “There are so many scholarship opportunities for students.”

Meet Lauren David – a New College transfer student chosen for the inaugural class of a prestigious arts leadership program. The Diversity in Arts Leadership (DIAL) internship program has an overarching aim to connect learning cohorts of interns, arts hosts, mentors, and emerging arts communities, and to build habits of continuous learning and cultural equity. The competitive initiative places undergraduate students from underrepresented backgrounds in 10-week paid internships in arts leadership roles. Lauren David interned at The Sarasota Art Museum. “I’m honored to have been chosen to participate in the DIAL program,” said David, a transfer student who is majoring in environmental studies with a specialization in urban studies and a minor in museum studies. “This internship, I believe, will give me a better understanding of the complexities of curating, nonprofit work, and the art of placemaking. I hope to bring a new perspective to future exhibitions by combining my commitment to creating inclusive spaces for underrepresented communities with my love of art.”
