Newcastle Weekly contents

thursday 26 september 2019

This week... From the editor To many, Newcastle will always be fondly known as Steel City. Coming from the very man who is synonymous with the city's industrial heritage, Aubrey Brooks: "Newcastle was built on BHP." The third-generation steel worker advocated for staff when the mining giant closed its Mayfield plant on 30 September 1999, after 84 years in operation. This week, we recount how the plant's closure 20 years ago impacted the region, and how it contributed to the city we know and love today. Read more on pages 4 and 6. Also making headlines this week was the global climate strike, where scores of people – many of them students – rallied for action on climate change around the world, including in our own backyard. Thousands gathered at Civic Park last Friday, inspired by pint-sized pioneer Greta Thunberg's School Strike 4 Climate initiative on her quest to lobby governments, businesses and communities on climate action. Peaceful protestors called for the Australian government to abandon any new coal, oil and gas projects and instead drive a transition to renewable energy. Locally, Stockton residents continued to languish over erosion at Stockton Beach, while flood mitigation works got under way at Wallsend.

made two years earlier and left more than 2,000 employees out of a job. Mr Brooks was one of those. He followed in his grandfather’s and father’s footsteps in February 1961 by joining BHP as a 15-year-old. “My grandfather was there on the first day of operation in 1915 and my

suburbs declined in popularity over the years because of pollution, the steelworks thrived, becoming the region’s largest employer. Mr Brooks believed that BHP’s decision to close was due to several factors, which included its desire to move into minerals, as well as the fact Newcastle was an “antiquated plant” in desperate need of repairs. Despite the turmoil at the time, he said the city was indebted to the company. “Newcastle was built on BHP,” he said. “What would Newcastle be like if BHP had not come to town? “The biggest thing they did for Newcastle was employment through those hard years.” A reunion will take place this Saturday 28 September at Carrington Bowling Club from 12.30pm. - Ben Murphy

It was the “world’s worst secret”, one that former worker Aubrey Brooks described as “devastating” for Newcastle at the time. On 30 September 1999, BHP steelworks closed its Mayfield plant after 84 years of operation. The announcement had been

ORICA KOORAGANG ISLAND COMMUNITY UPDATE MUSEUM EXPRESS CELEBRATES SCIENCE WEEK WITH SPECIAL GUESTS The Orica-sponsored science outreach program Museum Express celebrated National Science Week with special guests Newcastle Lord Mayor, Nuatali Nelmes and Orica Kooragang Island General Manager, Paul Hastie. Cr Nelmes and Mr Hastie observed the program in action during a visit to Bishop Tyrrell College last month. Museum Express was originally developed with funding from Orica back in 2015. Since then Orica has invested nearly $250,000 in the program, which delivers high quality and engaging science shows to schools and other audiences across the Hunter and Central Coast regions. The program presents science in a fun and accessible way, with the aim of sparking curiosity in the next generation.

PUMP PROJECT FOR AMMONIA TANK The liquid ammonia export pumps and associated piping at the 12,000-tonne ammonia storage tank are set to be replaced. This project is the final phase of the site’s multimillion-dollar Ammonia Management Improvement (AMI) Program, which has been implemented in stages over the last seven years. In order to complete the pump replacement safely, the ammonia tank will need to remain empty while the work is carried out. During this time, any ammonia produced on site that is in excess of operational requirements will be stored in a ship at the K2 berth.

COMMUNITY INVESTMENT PROGRAM UPDATE Annual grant recipients’ breakfast: Recently we hosted a breakfast to congratulate recipients of grants through our Community Investment Program. The event, held at Merewether Surfhouse, gave people an opportunity to share information about the wide variety of projects being undertaken in the Newcastle area with financial support from the program. It was inspiring to hear about the amazing work being done to build capacity in our community. Some of our latest recipients include: Waratah-Mayfield Men’s Shed, Nova for Women and Children, and Conservation Volunteers Australia. Applications for round 2 of the 2019 Community Investment Program close on 30 September. Application forms and supporting documents can be found on our website orica.com/kooragang

Newcastle, the steelworks industry and the world has changed drastically over the past two decades. Despite this, the Newcastle Industrial Heritage Association (NIHA) wants to preserve the important part Steel City played in Australian history for future generations. This month marks 20 years since BHP closed its Mayfield plant. The NIHA is set to host open days at The Muster Point monument on Sunday 29 and Monday 30 September – the day it officially shut down in 1999 – from 10am to 3pm. The Muster Point memorial sculpture opened two weeks before the plant’s closure. A cross was built into it to honour those people killed at BHP during its 84-year existence. Former steelworks general manager Lance Hockridge, the man at the helm when it closed, will attend a cake-cutting ceremony at 11am on Monday. Members of the public can then tour the state heritage-listed Delprat’s Cottage, originally built in 1914 for Guillaume Delprat to supervise the construction of the Newcastle steelworks.

The NIHA, which has been involved in its restoration for the past three years, aims to include displays and exhibitions at the site. Association president Bob Cook said BHP steelworks’ existence had a much bigger impact on Australia than many people realised. “The operation of the steelworks between the two World Wars changed Australia in profound ways,” he said. “Fortress Newcastle was a title used during the second World War and referred to the fortresses of military installations around Newcastle that were protecting it from an enemy attack. “The government realised that things happening in Newcastle in the second World War were going to make or break Australia’s capacity to win the war. “Making munition and all things for the war – bullets, guns and all sorts of machines – was happening here in Newcastle. “So, what we are saying as a group is [the steelworks] has been important in Australia’s history and future generations shouldn’t forget that that ever happened.” The ceremony’s assembly point is at Selwyn

Newcastle council will move into its new administration centre at Stewart Avenue next month, paving the way for work to begin on the city’s first five-star hotel. The council, which has housed staff at the roundhouse building, is also set to resume its campaign to sell or lease the state heritagelisted Frederick Ash Building (FAB). Last December, hospitality group Crystalbrook Collection was announced as the new owners of the roundhouse building. Set to be known as the Kingsley, the hotel will feature more than 130 luxury rooms, a lobby bar, café with outdoor terrace, and a new rooftop with restaurant, swimming pool, and

gymnasium. Crystalbrook’s interim chief executive and group director of hotels, Geoff York, said Newcastle was a great fit for its brand. “We’re looking forward to receiving the keys to the roundhouse and anticipate that construction will begin later this year with the intention of opening the doors to the five-star Kingsley late in 2020,” he said. The upcoming expressions of interest (EOI) will be for sale or lease of the FAB, while EOIs will also be sought for the purchase of the current Blue Door Café (Bennett Building) and the Clarendon Hotel. The council’s administration employees will start at 12 Stewart Avenue on Tuesday 8 October.

On 23 September 2019, voting will begin to elect directors of NRMA. I am very pleased to say that I have successfully nominated to represent this region and the wider membership of NRMA. I am a proud resident of the Hunter, and believe that NRMA members and the wider community deserve quality roads, transport, travel and lifestyle options. As a working mother, I also believe that we must not only plan our future but move quickly on developing new ways for our community to connect and move. If I am elected I will work for:

I believe NRMA must continue to lead in these areas while maintaining its commitment to its legendary roadside assistance, its members and the community. If elected, I would be the first Hunter resident to sit on the NRMA board since Kyle Loades retired as Director and President in December 2017 after his 10 year tenure. Kyle has been a great resource during this process and I am most grateful for his endorsement of my nomination.

news United front on Stockton Beach erosion

Waves crash against emergency sandbags at Stockton Beach. Photo: Peter Stoop

Resident Lucas Gresham says the community’s “passion has come out” amid unprecedented erosion of Stockton Beach. Mr Gresham cited inaction from the state government and temporary solutions by Newcastle council as two main reasons for his launch of a GoFundMe page, which, as of Tuesday afternoon, had raised more

than $15,000 online. The donations will go towards a community class action and a claim with the Environmental Defenders Office (EDO) – an independent legal centre that specialises in public interest environmental law. Mr Gresham said the initial target was $1,000, but additional funds would potentially assist with

“solicitors’ advice or whatever else that may be”. “We have been in contact with the EDO, but we haven’t had an official call yet,” he said. “For us, we just want to make sure we’ve got the ducks lined up correctly so we can start on the action.” Earlier this month, a childcare centre was forced to close due to safety concerns, while the Stockton Surf Life Saving Club and popular café Lexie’s On The Beach were also threatened. Newcastle council stated last week it would undertake multi-milliondollar works at the northern end of the Mitchell Street seawall in a bid to protect the existing rock wall from future failure caused by ongoing erosion. The council’s chief executive, Jeremy Bath, said it was also working with various government agencies on

a coastal management program. State legislation dictated it would come into effect on 31 December 2021. “This plan will include a longterm solution to ongoing erosion at Stockton,” Mr Bath said. “Until then, our hands are tied in terms of what we can do, unless the state government intervenes.” Mr Gresham said the community would continue to show a united front until a solution was found. “We’ve learned to live with our feelings under the skin, going, ‘Okay, one day it’ll happen,” he said. “But everybody’s passion has come out – no-one will let this go, we’ll follow it through until it’s done.” A community meeting will take place at Stockton Surf Life Saving Club today (Thursday 26 September) at 5pm. - Ben Murphy

An aerial view of Rathmines Park.

Future vision for historic site Rathmines Park was once home to one of the most important RAAF seaplane bases on Australia’s east coast. Catalina long-range patrol bombers, along with other aircraft, flew from Rathmines during World War II, conducting coastal patrols in search of enemy raiders. The base closed in 1956, but many of its key features remain, including part of the north-east hangar, the former Sergeants Mess, Officers

Mess, and the base hospital. Now, a community engagement program will help Lake Macquarie council gain a better understanding of the issues and opportunities for the waterfront site. In 2018, a draft conservation management plan outlined its exceptional heritage value, before the final version was approved by the NSW Office of Environment and Heritage earlier this year. The council’s subsequent master

plan and plan of management aim to shape Rathmines Park’s future vision. Lake Macquarie mayor Kay Fraser said parts of the site were listed on local and state heritage registers, which reflected their important role in Lake Macquarie’s history. “Rathmines Park is regarded as the most intact seaplane base in Australia,” Cr Fraser said. “We want to ensure the master plan recognises and respects this important part of our nation’s military history, while continuing to provide opportunities for community use and recreation.” The council will host pop-up information and feedback sessions on Thursday 26 September (today) at Rathmines shops from 7am to 9am and from 12pm to 2pm at Rathmines Park. A community workshop at the Catalina Conference Centre will follow from 6pm to 8pm. Feedback is open until Friday 11 October.

Thousands take stand as part of global climate strike Alexa Stuart is angry and terrified. “I am angry not just because my future is at risk, but because my future is being stolen right in front of my eyes,” she said. “And the way to deal with this fear and helplessness is action, is doing everything in our power to

fix this mess.” The Lambton High School student was among a crowd of thousands at a peaceful global climate strike in Newcastle’s Civic Park last week. The event demanded three main actions from Australia’s governments and business leaders.

Those were: no new coal, oil and gas projects, including the Adani mine; 100% renewable energy generation and exports by 2030; and fund a just transition that would create alternative jobs for all fossilfuel workers and communities in the region. Some prominent Newcastle artists and businesses responded to the call for action, including musician Kim Churchill and surfing publication Throwing Buckets, as well as the nation’s four major banks, KeepCup, and technology company Atlassian. Ms Stuart, who helped organise the event, addressed Prime Minister Scott Morrison in her speech on the day. “In March, 150,000 of us took to the streets around Australia and yet you did not listen to our fears and you told us we need ‘More learning in schools and less activism,’” she said. “But we will not take that for an

Work has started on Tyrrell Street bridge at Wallsend. Photo: Peter Stoop

Flood work under way in Wallsend It was a day she thought might never come. Wallsend state MP Sonia Hornery last week praised the start of flood mitigation works, more than a decade after the Pasha Bulker storm decimated the suburb’s CBD. Newcastle council has moved to replace the Tyrrell Street bridge, which will see the bridge and its support pillars replaced with a singlespan structure over the stormwater drain. It is the first of three bridges that will be replaced as part of an overall plan to reduce the

amount of flooding in the CBD. Ms Hornery said the work on Tyrrell Street bridge was an important first step. “The bridges over Nelson and Boscawen streets will also need to be replaced and the stormwater drains through the Wallsend CBD widened,” she said. “Thankfully, the City of Newcastle has stepped up and was willing to put up the money to replace the bridge. I have been working with them for a long time to get to this point.”

It will feature artists from the Hunter Region exhibiting visual artwork in the windows of shops and businesses in High Street and The Levee in March 2020. Other winners included the Maitland Garden Ramble, an event that puts up to 10 gardens on display to raise funds for Vision Australia; the Maitland River Run; and Maitland Triathlon.

Jets get their skin in the game The Newcastle Jets are preparing for more than football this summer. Players and staff lined up for pre-season skin checks with the Hunter Melanoma Foundation as part of its Skin in the Game initiative. Dr Mike Reid from the Calvary Mater Melanoma Unit visited

a training session to talk about sun safety and carry out the skin checks. As the warmer months approach, the foundation continues its mission to defeat the incidence of melanoma in the region by educating the community about early detection and preventative measures.

Melanoma is the third most common cancer in Australian men and accounts for about 12% of all new cancer diagnosed. In the 1980s, the Hunter had the highest melanoma rate in Australia, but, through the work of the foundation and others, the region now sits at number three. Hunter Melanoma Foundation executive director Claudia Tolhurst congratulated the Newcastle Jets on being proactive in the lead-up to the summer A-League competition. “Playing sport and enjoying outdoor lifestyle is part of our country’s culture,” she said. “Even if you are applying sunscreen, extended periods in the sun increases the risk of a melanoma, making it important to make skin checks part of your regular health care routine.” The foundation is inviting other schools, sporting and community groups to be part of the 2019-20 HMF Skin in the Game initiative.

Riders return Cyclists raised more than $147,000 in this year’s Ride for Sick Kids Northern NSW. The 18-strong team returned with their heads held high after pedalling 535 kilometres through the New England North West region in a bid to raise vital funds for families with seriously ill and injured children. That figure is expected to rise following the completion of the Ride for Sick Kids NNSW Community Ride at the end of September, a month-long initiative that invites residents to use their two wheels to decide two goals: how many kilometres they want to ride and how much they want to raise. Ronald McDonald House provides a home away from home for families, allowing them to stay close to their sick or injured children while in hospital.

Getty Images Nic White forces an error from Fiji winger and former NRL player Semi Radradra.

Fijians give Wallabies a fright Former Maitland Blacks junior Nic White and his Wallabies teammates bounced back from a slow start to beat Fiji 39-21 in the squad’s Rugby World Cup opener at the weekend. White, who narrowly missed out on the 2015 tournament in the United Kingdom, started the Pool D clash over Will Genia at halfback in Sapporo, Japan.

Underdogs Fiji applied early pressure and slotted a fifth-minute penalty, before White’s box kick was swallowed by former NRL star Semi Radradra. Fijian flanker Peceli Yato then finished off an attacking charge for an 8-0 lead. Australia hit back in the 18th minute when White found Michael

Hooper with a short pass and the Wallabies skipper drove his way over next to the posts. Two more penalties saw Fiji extend its advantage to 14-7, but a try to Australian winger Reece Hodge reduced the deficit five minutes from half-time. Just minutes after the break, Waisea Nayacalevu crashed over for the Fijians and an upset was firmly on the cards. However, the Wallabies slotted a penalty in the 50th minute and Tolu Latu grabbed a double to put Australia in front for the first time in the match. Further tries to Samu Kerevi and Marika Koroibete, along with conversions from Matt Toomua, wrapped up the 18-point win. Australia will face Wales this Sunday 29 September at 5.45pm AEST and then tackles Uruguay on Saturday 5 October from 3.15pm. The 2019 Rugby World Cup final has been marked for 2 November.

Wests win title Western Suburbs powered to a 36-0 victory over Cessnock on Sunday in the 2019 Business Plaza Cup grand final at McDonald Jones Stadium. The minor premiers lost only two games on the way to the Newcastle Rugby League decider and raced to an 18-0 lead at half-time. Back-rower Ryan Walker completed his hattrick in the second period, while Malu Fiu and Fuaimamao Uta also crossed to round out the dominant victory. The Rosellas reached the grand final with a 50-10 win over Central, while Cessnock recorded three wins on the spin – 14-10 against Maitland, 32-28 over South Newcastle, and 34-8 over Central. In reserve grade, Wests snuck past Souths 18-16, while Maitland caused an upset in the open grade, beating Wests 20-16. Lakes United downed Wests 14-4 in the under-19s and Central Newcastle won the blues tag grand final 10-0 against Souths.

Mandarin, pistachio and chickpea cake Images and text from The Anti-Inflammatory Cookbook by Chrissy Freer. Photography by Julie Renouf. Murdoch Books, RRP $35. Serves: 12

Preheat the oven to 170°C. Lightly grease a 22cm round cake tin and line it with baking paper.

Prep: 20 mins Cook: 1 hr 50 mins 3 mandarins, unpeeled 150g (1 cup) pistachio kernels, plus 1 Tbsp extra, coarsely chopped, to garnish

Spring picnic Embrace the warmer weather and head out to eat in the sunshine. Here are two delicious spring recipes to eat outdoors – either on the back deck or on a picnic by the beach or lake.

400g can chickpeas, drained and rinsed 175g (½ cup) single origin floral honey 4 eggs 75g (½ cup) gluten-free or wholemeal plain flour

Cut the mandarins into quarters, remove the seeds and discard. Process the pistachios in a food processor to fine crumbs. Remove; set aside. Add the chickpeas to the food processor and process to fine crumbs. Add the mandarins and process until smooth. Use an electric mixer to whisk the honey and eggs in a large bowl until thick. Add the mandarin mixture and fold in until well combined, then add the ground pistachios, flour and baking powder and stir until well combined.

icing sugar, for dusting (optional)

Spoon the batter into the tin and smooth the surface with the back of the spoon.

Place the mandarins in a large saucepan, cover with cold water and bring to the boil, then drain. Cover with cold water again, return to the boil, then reduce the heat to low and simmer for 45 minutes, adding a little more water to the pan as necessary. Drain the mandarins and set aside to cool.

Bake for 50 minutes or until a skewer inserted into the centre comes out with a few moist crumbs. If the cake browns too quickly, cover the top loosely with foil. Set aside to cool for 20 minutes, then carefully remove from the tin and cool completely on a wire rack. Serve dusted with icing sugar and garnished with extra chopped pistachios.

1 tsp gluten-free baking powder

Gourmet steak sandwich Recipe courtesy of Australian Beef australianbeef.com.au Add the mushrooms and cook for 1 minute, stirring often. Add salt and pepper to taste and then remove from pan.

Serves: 4 Prep: 15 mins Cook: 15 mins 4 x 150g silverside sandwich steaks 1 French baguette

Cut baguette into 4 pieces, slice in half. Brush the bread with aioli and fill each with a steak, onions and mushrooms.

3 onions, sliced 200g mushrooms, sliced 100g aioli 2 Tbsp olive oil 1 tsp sugar 1 Tbsp thyme

Picnic Perfect

Caramelise the onions in a frypan with 1 tablespoon oil, sugar, thyme, salt and pepper then remove from pan. In the same unwashed pan, add 1 tablespoon of olive oil and heat it up. 28

Heat the same pan or a grill, brush the meat with olive oil then cook on both sides.

Author realises his dream There is only joy for Hunter writer Jordan Lowe following the launch of his debut graphic novel, Sorrow and Joy. The anime-inspired novel is the first in an epic series of several planned volumes that follows Haruka Mantsu, a young Japanese nurse working in a devastating war. The series, 10 years in the making, was inspired by fellow anime author Hideo Kojima and Lowe’s early introduction to storytelling by his mum. “My main goal is to make a story that people will remember; a story that people will keep and when they have children, they will pass it on to them as mum passed The Hobbit to me,” Lowe said. He dedicated the completion of volume one to his mum, adding, “She’s my main inspiration and my biggest fan, and my harshest critic.” The 24-year-old has shown that disability is no barrier to success.

As an author with highfunctioning autism, sharing his story was no easy feat. Lowe’s National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) provider, Castle Personnel, and his ability coach, Emma Upton, supported his journey to becoming a published author. Together, they helped him find a publisher and set up the official website where Lowe has already sold his first copy to an international buyer. Humble about his achievement, Lowe encouraged anyone with a dream to become a writer to give it a go. “The first thing you need to have is an idea – an idea that you believe in and that you believe you can pass on to the next generation,” he said. You can order your copy of Sorrow and Joy at jordanlowe. australianauthors.store

A concept design of the Multi Arts Place.

Creatives tipped to embrace new space It will be a focal point for arts and culture in the Hunter Region, capable of hosting national and international shows. Lake Macquarie council has worked with the University of Newcastle to adapt concept designs by architecture student Samantha Bailey for the first multi-arts space of its kind in Australia. A development application has been lodged for the facility, which is

set to be known as MAP (Multi Arts Place). Construction is expected to begin at Speers Point Park in mid2020, pending approval. The council’s manager arts, culture and tourism, Jacqui Hemsley, said that, with more than 400,000 people visiting the park each year, MAP would become a destination in the city for arts and music lovers. “This contemporary and flexible creative space in such a popular and

attractive location will be an ideal stepping-stone for emerging and nationally-renowned artists,” she said. The project received a $1.35 million grant through the state government’s Regional Cultural Fund. In 2018, the University of Newcastle’s School of Architecture and Built Environment was tasked with designing an innovative arts pavilion that would provide a flexible platform for cuttingedge multimedia exhibitions, performance, music, and community events. Ms Bailey’s concept design was one of dozens submitted by students in the competition. Her work stood out because of its creativity, understanding of the brief, and potential relationship with the surrounding landscape. University of Newcastle’s Head of Architecture, Dr Chris Tucker, said the competition proved to be an invaluable experience.

Koala app launches

The Department of Planning, Industry and Environment (DPIE) has launched a free app called I Spy Koala for NSW. Available for iPhone and Android mobile phone users, the app allows members of the public, tourists, researchers, rangers and conservation groups to record details of koala sightings in the wild; help improve the information available about where koalas are; identify nearby risks; and offer tips on how to conserve them. I Spy Koala is one of several projects undertaken by the DPIE. It has also funded local on-ground actions to manage and mitigate threats such as dog attack and wildfire in core koala habitat, as well as the development of a state-wide profile of koala disease using existing information and new data from the field.

A special fundraising event will support drought-stricken farmers in the Upper Hunter town of Murrurundi. Sing Out for Murrurundi is set to take place at Belmont 16s this Sunday 29 September from 2pm, with a range of community groups to perform and pledge their help. Connor Wink, Newcastle’s NovaTones, Eastlakes U3A Ukelele group, and the Clan McEwan Pipe Band will all chime in for an afternoon of fun and entertainment.

The event has been organised by Sing Australia Belmont, which managed to raise $25,000 last year for Rural Aid. “Following the recent media coverage of the dire situation in Murrurundi, Sing Australia Belmont has committed our fundraising efforts this year to support drought relief efforts in this area,” conductor Annette McEwan said. “Pop-up Pantry is a local charity working through the Lions Club of Murrurundi and they are doing an extraordinary job of supplying

Ninety-eight young Picassos tried their hands at exhibiting works in the Finite Gallery Junior Art Prize 2019. Owner of the Caves Beach gallery, Leslie Duffin, said returning judge Suzanne Reid (Newcastle Art Space) had her work cut out for her this year. “The calibre of entries was very high,” Duffin said. So high, the gallery awarded 30

range of mediums, including rock art, ceramics, photography, 3D sculpture, acrylic painting and collage. The only constraint to artists’ imaginations was size. “My background is in early childhood education, so I love to encourage the kids to have a go – as an adult artist, I know that takes courage,” Duffin added. “[Exhibiting is] not for everyone, but it’s good for them to learn to take criticism constructively as part of the artistic journey. “It was especially heartening to see the younger kids taking part.” The Junior Art Prize exhibition is on display until Sunday 13 October to coincide with the school holidays, throughout which the gallery will hold workshops. Shaun Of The Dead

Wednesday, SBS VLND, 8.30pm, (2004)

In the title role, Simon Pegg (pictured) leads a who’s who of UK comedy in a classic exhibition of black humour. Shaun begins with three objectives: to visit his mum, win his girlfriend back and “sort his life out”. Embarking on his quest with the help of Nick Frost as layabout childhood pal Ed, all that stands in his way, naturally, is the flesheating living dead. It’s dead good.

Friday

pick of the week The Truman Show Nothing is real in the life of desk-bound Truman Burbank (Jim Carrey, pictured). His life is one big soap opera and the world is his audience. But what happens when the charade is broken? Touching, funny and perhaps clever enough to reverberate for decades to come, this durable drama features a fine cast and the score is a gem, lifting Truman’s fairytale awakening to majestic heights.

Edge Of Tomorrow Sunday, 9GO!, 9.20pm, M (2014) Director Doug Liman (Mr & Mrs Smith, The Bourne Identity) delivers a compelling, fast-paced popcorn sci-fi flick that might’ve failed in less experienced hands. Versatile Emily Blunt adds a touch of class as a tenacious fighter, but you needn’t find any excuses to see this tightly wound, clever action thriller.

celebrity birthday BRIE LARSON - 1 October 1989 Whilst there may be irritations in Brie’s working life, everyone seems to be pulling together. On the love front, there will be a tingle of anticipation as she starts to realise that the passion she feels with her partner is serious. It may appear to others that a piece of luck has come Brie’s way, but the truth is a combination of tenacity and intuition is the real reason. Patience has paid off, and now she can enjoy the fruits of her labour.

CANCER 22 JUNE – 22 JULY

LIBRA 24 SEPT – 23 OCT

CAPRICORN 22 DEC – 20 JAN

The New Moon on the 28th places the focus on partnerships and relationships, making them of paramount importance. Your emotions will be strong and you could easily fall in love at this time or strengthen your existing romantic relationship. It will certainly pay to avoid having foot in mouth syndrome!

The New Moon on the 28th indicates that all your relationships and friendships will be re-evaluated and some changes will be made soon. Be careful of getting involved in gossip or getting frustrated with others who don’t get your point of view. Stay calm to avoid heated arguments.

The New Moon on the 28th indicates a growing self-confidence which will allow you to tackle new beginnings with a sense of inspiration and vigour. There may be some kind of secret relationship going on; such as keeping in touch with a black sheep the rest of the family ignores.

The 28 September New Moon is the ideal time to focus on education and communication. Becoming involved with a sport or hobby which is mentally challenging will help you deal with any restlessness. Some Capricorns may fall in love with someone from a different cultural background.

TAURUS 21 APR – 21 MAY

SCORPIO 24 OCT – 22 NOV

The New Moon on the 28th is the ideal time to take notice of your health and try to improve it in whatever way you can. Consider starting a new health routine, improving your diet, meditating to improve your mental health or exercising more.

The New Moon on the 28th indicates that your romantic or social life will be active and that visits to restaurants, cinemas and other local sporting events are likely. Goods which are especially luxurious or artistic ones which are bought at this time will increase in value.

The New Moon on 28 September is the ideal time to relax, meditate and travel on a series of inner journeys. It’s also a good time to listen to your instincts and intuition. At work, you will work co-operatively with others; you won’t achieve much on your own.

The New Moon on the 28th is an ideal time to have some fun and chances are you will become excited about a number of new ideas and sporting activities. Be careful of getting overly heated about financial matters, especially if you feel yourself being manipulated and controlled.

GEMINI 22 MAY – 21 JUNE

VIRGO 24 AUG – 23 SEPT

SAGITTARIUS 23 NOV – 21 DEC

PISCES 20 FEB – 20 MAR

Feelings of family loyalty will strengthen, but try to keep your cool when old issues resurface; by blowing a gasket all you do is give your power away. The 28 September New Moon is a time when you’ll emerge from your shell and find yourself the centre of attention.

The New Moon on the 28th indicates a new source of income is likely and you’ll find ways of improving your cash flow. Even without your intervention, events seem to be moving extremely quickly. Avoid being a lead foot or risk having the rule book thrown at you.

The New Moon on the 28th indicates you will need to learn new methods which could arise from your work or a change in your way of life. It’s important that you be honest in all your dealings and you should find yourself among people who themselves are honest.

The New Moon on the 28th indicates you’re likely to be feeling somewhat emotional and vulnerable, however be careful to keep any insecurities under control. There will be a good deal of interaction with business people or with the general public, so present yourself in a stylish way.

My favourite things

ROLLER DERBY When I walked into my first training at Newcastle Roller Derby League, it felt like coming home. The sport is tough, but the community is amazing. You can find me on skates trying to be as good as Marilyn Tantrum or head of the Dockyard Dames cheer squad!

MUSICAL THEATRE Known to cry the moment the first note plays, I am happiest when I’m sitting in the audience of a musical theatre about the take in the glory of the performance.

Photo Sarah Maunder

ANYTHING VINTAGE Elvis Presley, old recipes, vintage fashion – if it’s old, I love it! My collection of vintage hats, gloves, dresses and bags grows a little bigger every year.

Kia Handley

ABC NEWCASTLE MORNINGS PRESENTER

Kia Handley is the mornings presenter at ABC Newcastle and spends as much time as she can meeting interesting people and sharing their stories of life in the Hunter. When she’s not behind a microphone, you can usually find her doing something relating to roller derby (she’s been known to wake up at 2am to catch a bout that’s happening overseas!) If she’s not skating around town, you’ll probably find Kia in a local antique store, op shop, market or behind her sewing machine. From Elvis Presley to the smell of an old book – if it’s old, Kia loves it and wants to keep its magic alive for decades to come. You’re more likely to find Kia on a bush walk than at the beach, but now she’s found her home in the Hunter, she never wants to leave! 62

MY BFF My friends and husband are essential elements of my life, but my BFF Gabby is my anchor. We live thousands of kilometres apart, but it doesn’t stop us having the most amazing friendship. I’d be lost without her.

DRESS-UPS I’ve never grown out of having a costume box. If there is a themed party or event, I’m known to come in the most ridiculous, out-of-the-box costume there is. I plan for months!
