This week... From the editor Inspired by a recent chat with Hunter historian Ed Tonks, I rediscovered the Fernleigh Track. In all its beauty and functionality, the 15-kilometre shared pathway, which once was a railway line, connects Newcastle and Lake Mac, snaking through Adamstown, Kahibah, Whitebridge, Redhead, Jewells and Belmont – including the Glenrock State Conservation Area. Although I've never walked, ran or cycled the entire track from start to fi nish, lately I've enjoyed picking a section at random and piling the dog, friends and family into the car to explore on foot. As the weather begins to warm, you can't beat getting out in the sunshine and fresh air, with a pit stop at one of the many cafes along the way. A self-professed weekend warrior, I love making the most of my spare time this way (probably thanks to my dad, who took me camping every other weekend since before I could walk). Never underestimate the restorative powers of the great outdoors. The smell of recent rain, the sound of waves gently lapping the shore, and the warmth of campfi re: these are a few of my favourite things. Before I go, shout-out to Shoal Bay Country Club for allowing us to shoot our cover story there this week. Did you mistake it for Greece? - Georgia Osland

Mission Australia has offered short-term arrangements for families affected by the closure of its Stockton Early Learning Centre due to coastal erosion. The charity informed staff and families of the decision last week after independent coastal engineers deemed it was no longer safe for occupation. The property’s landowner, Newcastle council, stated it had been clear for more than 12 months that the building would be demolished when the lease expired in mid-2020. In 2016, the council began to monitor the Stockton shoreline via a range of technologies, including 3D drone-based modelling, ground, and aerial photography. The results showed the dune was relatively stable until about January 2018 and, since then, severe weather events had accelerated erosion rates. The council claimed that, in the past two months alone, more than 9,000 cubic metres of sand was lost from the front

of Barrie Crescent Reserve, where the centre was situated. Mission Australia general manager Ben Williams said it had attempted to find a more suitable location. “The erosion of the sand dunes at Stockton occurred much faster than erosion forecasts expected due to recent large swell and heavy rain,” he told Newcastle Weekly. “We have been investigating [other] sites for the Stockton centre in the local area since February last year. “Unfortunately, despite our best efforts, we have not been able to secure an appropriate and viable location for a childcare centre of this size.” Mr Williams added that he understood the centre’s closure would result in an uncertain time for parents and children. However, early learning staff were available to assist families to connect to alternative care options and offer support. Continued on page 14

news Theatre’s “icing on the cake” A $190,299 grant is the “icing on the cake” for Newcastle Theatre Company as it undergoes a major refurbishment. The funds were announced last Thursday under the state government’s inaugural My Community Project initiative. Newcastle Theatre Company (NTC) president Claire Williams said it would enable its Lambton-based complex to complete a significant facelift, improved amenity for members and patrons, and a new community space. “We are in the middle of a major refurbishment of our facilities to meet fire and safety compliance and this grant is the icing on the cake while these works and our fundraising efforts continue,” she said. “The grant will allow us to install new air conditioning for the

auditorium and stage areas, repair and replace the façade of both theatre buildings facing De Vitre Street, build a new storage structure for props and set pieces, and refurbish the laneway between the two buildings as a new community space.” Ms Williams said NTC was grateful to the Rotary Club of Newcastle Enterprise, which sponsored the project, as well as the people in the Wallsend electorate, who voted for it in the bid process. “NTC is not just about providing creative opportunities for Hunter people but has a mission to give patrons and the community safe, inspiring and multipurpose facilities,” she said. Apart from NTC, New Vine Church, based in Maryland, also received a $70,000 grant under the program.

In Maitland, three schools – Metford Public School, Maitland Public School and St Aloysius Catholic Primary School, Chisholm – shared in almost $300,000 in funding. Metford will use its $150,000 grant for a community play space, while Maitland Public has been gifted $95,000 for an outdoor space for performances and community events. St Aloysius’ $50,000 will establish a plastic recycling station.

In Lake Macquarie, Coal Point Public School received $198,086 for a nature space and community hub; Toronto Community Kitchen picked up $34,000; and a Carer Support Group Respite Program in Cooranbong was handed $20,000. The big winner in Newcastle was a multi-purpose, all-weather greenspace for kids at The Junction. It received $143,000. - Ben Murphy

news The breast is history At the tender age of 34, Mayfield East’s Kathryn Simms made the brave decision to undergo a double mastectomy. Three years earlier doctors had confirmed she carried the BRCA2 gene mutation, which put her at significantly higher risk of developing breast and ovarian cancer. She already had an inkling, given her aunty had had two types of breast cancer and her great grandmother died of ovarian cancer. “I chose to take hold of my risk… so I could be here for my daughter,” Kathryn told Newcastle Weekly. But it wasn’t that simple. Kathryn opted for a prophylactic mastectomy with an immediate reconstruction, but post-op complications meant one of the implants had to be removed, leaving

her with only one reconstructed breast. Fast-forward to 2019, Kathryn is planning a fundraiser for Pink Hope – a preventative health hub that provides information, guidance and emotional support to women at risk of breast and ovarian cancer, and empowers the community to assess, understand and reduce their risk. “When I came across Pink Hope, I realised I’m not just this problem – there are other people out there like me,” she added. “Pink Hope supported me by connecting me with other women in similar circumstances and allowed me to feel a sense of camaraderie.” The Bold BRCA Brunch will be held from 9.30am to 12.30pm on Sunday 29 September at the Newcastle Food and Flower Markets at Sandgate. Tickets are $70 each via

news Report delves into social housing

Heritage preserved

New research has revealed that the number of households eligible for social housing in NSW may be up to 261% higher than official waiting lists suggest. A discussion paper, Estimating Current and Future Demand for Social Housing Assistance, was released last week by Hunter-based not-for-profit social and affordable housing provider Compass Housing Services. It used census data to estimate the true extent of existing social housing demand in Australia and model the potential future demand that could be created by shifts in the labour market due to automation and artificial intelligence. The report claimed there were more than 48,000 households on the waiting list for social housing in NSW – the highest number of any state in Australia. Average waiting times for social housing in the Hunter were between five and 10 years, depending on the type of property. “Income and asset data from the last census suggest that there are an additional 127,000 households eligible for social housing who have,

The unique character of Hamilton’s residential streetscapes will be preserved for future generations. In July 2018, Newcastle council proposed to the state government to protect the historically significant Hamilton Residential Precinct, a fourblock area between Donald and Tudor streets, bounded by Gordon Avenue to the east and Murray Street to the west. The proposal has been approved by the Minister for Planning and Public Spaces, Rob Stokes, making it Newcastle’s first substantial heritage conservation area in 20 years. “The Hamilton Residential Precinct is typical of the late Victorian and Federation periods in Newcastle’s urban development, featuring smalllot housing of one or two storeys,” Newcastle lord mayor, Nuatali Nelmes, said. “Retaining our suburb’s character helps preserve our Novocastrian cultural identity and demonstrate our sense of pride in heritage places.” Establishing the conservation area would include amendments to the Newcastle Local Environment Plan.

as yet, chosen not to apply,” the paper’s author, Martin Kennedy, said. “If every household in NSW who met the eligibility criteria for social housing decided to apply, waiting lists across the state would increase by more than 261%. “The number of households eligible for social housing but not currently living in it is equivalent to approximately 21% of all renting households in NSW. “In Sydney the figure is 15% and in regional areas, such as the Hunter, it is 34%.” Mr Kennedy said the state government’s Future Directions for Social Housing policy was the most ambitious of its kind. However, he claimed it only proposed enough dwellings to house less than half the current waiting list over a 10-year period. The report made six recommendations, some of which included increasing the supply of social and affordable housing; stronger protections for private renters; stricter residential mortgage lending; and more effective re-skilling and transition programs for displaced workers.

news Landcare’s two decades of success in city

Landcare volunteer network chairperson Lois Simpson and coordinator Jason Harvey.

Thousands of volunteers and more than 200 groups: the Landcare movement has worked to make Lake Macquarie a better place for the past two decades. This September marks the 20th

anniversary of Lake Mac’s Landcare partnership, which pulls together the efforts of those groups across the city, as well as Lake Macquarie council. Mayor Kay Fraser and NSW

Landcare chief executive Adrian Zammit will acknowledge the milestone during a family-friendly event at Teralba’s Landcare Resource Centre on Saturday 14 September. Dr Zammit said Landcare served an important role in working with local communities to build more sustainable environments and agricultural practices. “We’re only just getting started,” he said. “It is vital that rural and urban communities continue to work together to protect natural resources and sustainable land management, now and into the future. “Landcare offers every Australian the chance to make a real difference. “Thousands of active Landcare groups operate across NSW, boasting tens of thousands of dedicated, passionate volunteers working together on a vast range of

projects. From sustainable land use education to waterways restoration and feral pest management, the Landcare community are the leaders in this field.” Lake Macquarie council’s Landcare coordinator Jason Harvey said the model had seen local grassroots groups restore, rehabilitate and conserve huge tracts of land over the last 20 years. He added Lake Macquarie Landcare’s recognition in 2016 as the best partnership in Australia demonstrated the initiative’s success. “Without our amazing volunteers, this organisation would not exist,” he said. The official welcome for the anniversary event will start at 1pm. It will be followed by an afternoon of live music and entertainment.

From page 4 “We are offering families short-term care arrangements at our other local services – including providing free transport from Stockton to our Beresfield service for children aged 12 months and over – while we help parents and guardians find longer-term placements for all children,” he said. “Local early learning services have vacancies available and have also kindly offered their support to our families.” The Stockton centre had operated for more than three decades. A new playground opened in September 2018 after the former yard was damaged when severe storms lashed the coastline earlier that year. Newcastle state MP Tim Crakanthorp called on the government to intervene and

expedite a coastal management program for Stockton Beach. Mr Crakanthorp tabled a 10,000-signature petition in August 2018 and debated the issue in NSW Parliament. He claimed the centre’s closure should “never have got to this stage”. “The people of Stockton have been abandoned by this government,” he said. “We know the government has money they can spend – they need to spend it.” Newcastle council stated it would continue discussions with the government. Contractors were due to arrive at Barrie Crescent Reserve over the weekend to place emergency sandbags at the site as a result of predicted large swells and ongoing erosion. - Ben Murphy

news Measles cases prompt vaccination warning Hunter New England Local Health District has called for people to vaccinate against measles and watch for symptoms after two confirmed cases in the region. A middle-aged woman and a teenage male have been diagnosed with the illness. Both cases visited several locations in and around Lake Macquarie and Newcastle while infectious between Wednesday 28 August and Tuesday 3 September. Some of these locations included Wallsend Library; Glendale Hunter Sports Centre gymnastics class and Glendale Shopping Centre; Edgeworth Town Centre (Henny Penny and Coles); West Wallsend Swim Centre; Warners Bay Pillow Talk; Wallsend McDonalds; Kotara Bunnings; and Clarendon Hotel.

Other sites were Broadmeadow McDonalds; Wickham Bid Barn Tender Centre; Westfield Kotara (KFC and Kmart); and Glendale Pharmacy Chemist Works. “It can take up to 18 days for symptoms to appear following exposure to a person with measles,” Hunter New England Public Health physician, Dr David Durrheim, said. “Symptoms to watch out for include fever, sore eyes and a cough followed three or four days later by a red, blotchy rash that spreads from the head to the rest of the body.” Dr Durrheim added the locations visited did not pose an ongoing risk. However, he encouraged people to ensure that they had received two doses of the measles-mumps-rubella vaccine.

news Students write book in 12 hours for worthy cause Students from a Lower Hunter school have written and illustrated a book in 12 hours to raise $3,500 for a worthy cause. A team from St John the Baptist Primary School Maitland completed the task in support of independent national charity The Kids’ Cancer Project and classmate Sienna Newton. In May 2015, Sienna, then in Year 2, was diagnosed with anaplastic ependymoma – a type of brain cancer. Sienna, who received treatment for months at Westmead Children’s Hospital, wrote a dedication in the front of book, which was titled Lost but Found. It was entered into a national event called Write a Book in a Day – a creative and challenging group

competition for students in Year 5 to 12. Teams of up to 10 need to write and illustrate a book from start to finish within the allotted time. Completed books are donated to children in hospitals’ all over Australia, while funds raised through sponsorship go to The Kids’ Cancer Project. Since 1993, the charity, backed by strong community support, has contributed millions of dollars to scientific research projects to help children with many types of cancer. St John the Baptist teacher Jenny McFadyen said the competition proved to be a real challenge for the team, aptly named The Book Rookies. “When we saw the competition, we thought it would be a great opportunity to help raise money

that would not only help children like Sienna, but would allow us to write a book that would then be put into children’s hospitals throughout Australia,” she said. The group was presented with a set of rules to follow during the challenge. Some of these included a word count between 2,000 and 5,000; two human characters (a race car

driver and a house painter); one non-human character (a monkey); a setting (dungeon); an issue (finding a new relative); and no outside help from anyone. This year’s Write a Book in a Day competition has been the biggest yet, raising more than $400,000 to date. Visit writeabookinaday.com for more. - Ben Murphy

news University-led trek supports Indigenous communities Twenty-five individuals have set off to tackle a five-day, 100-kilometre trek across the arid Australian outback this week in support of Indigenous equity. The University of Newcastle’s Ikara-Flinders Ranges Challenge, which started in South Australia on Monday, aimed to raise more than $125,000 for Indigenous student scholarships and health research. Trekkers, who are traversing the most impressive parts of the Heysen Trail – rated as one of the world’s premier long-distance trails – have already hit a fundraising figure of $144,300 to date. According to the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare, Indigenous Australians are nearly three times more likely than non-Indigenous Australians

to experience high levels of psychological distress, as well as hearing problems as children and bilateral vision loss. Indigenous Australians are also twice as likely to die before their fifth birthday or have a disability or long-term health condition. The Ikara-Flinders Ranges Challenge is the second trek of its kind that the university has organised to raise awareness and funds. In 2017, the 65-kilometre Larapinta Trail Challenge raised $152,432 through the support of 950 donors. Wallsend eye surgeon Jeff Dobinson is taking on the IkaraFlinders Ranges Challenge alongside his brother-in-law Richard Anicich.

The pair are no strangers to hiking, having climbed to the top of Tanzania’s Mount Kilimanjaro eight years ago. “Richard came back speaking very highly of the last [Larapinta] trek – that was such good exposure for a great cause,” Dr Dobinson said prior to the group’s departure. “I’m also a keen walker and I’m

looking forward to seeing that part of the world.” Funds from the 2017 trek helped to support 15 Indigenous undergraduate and three PhD scholarships for emerging Indigenous leaders, as well as two research programs, which aimed to address Indigenous community health issues.

Penrith’s Nathan Cleary leaves Kalyn Ponga in his wake. Photo: Getty Images

A record points haul from Penrith playmaker Nathan Cleary inspired his side to a 54-10 rout of Newcastle at Panthers Stadium on Sunday. Cleary’s four tries and nine conversions saw him end the round 25 fixture with 34 points – a club record. With both sides out of finals contention, the Knights started the contest on the front foot. Debutant Starford To’a gave the visitors the lead when he juggled

an intercept and raced 70 metres to score. However, Penrith hit back immediately through Cleary and scored two more tries to go into the half-time break up 18-4. Newcastle came out firing in the second period, with Herman Ese’ese reaching out to bang the ball down next to the posts just minutes after the resumption of play. A fortuitous Penrith try saw Billy Burns hold onto a Cleary bomb and stroll across the line, before Wayde Egan finished off a slick backline move. The Knights, down a man after Connor Watson was sent to the bin, were then steamrolled as Moses Leota, Cleary and Burns all scored. Cleary added his fourth try in the 67th minute to round out the scoring. Newcastle ended the 2019 season in 11th place.

Red Bull Air Race pilot Matt Hall competes in Japan at the weekend and, inset, Hall celebrates his championship win. Photos: Red Bull Content Pool

Hall makes history in Japan Matt Hall has realised a dream eight years in the making. After finishing as runner-up on three previous occasions, the Hunter-based pilot became the first Australian to win the Red Bull Air Race World Championship at the

weekend. Hall knew that a third place or above finish in Sunday’s race in Chiba, Japan, would wrap up a maiden title. In a dramatic finale, Japanese hero Yoshihide Muroya won the race ahead of USA’s Kirby

Chambliss, but Hall snatched third to pip Muroya to the championship by a single point. Czech pilot Martin Šonka, who claimed the 2018 title, rounded out the top three. Hall became the Red Bull Air Race’s 10th, and last, world champion. In May, Red Bull announced it would cancel the event, which hosted more than 90 races since its inception in 2003. A statement from the beverage company claimed the Red Bull Air Race “did not attract the level of outside interest as many other Red Bull events across the world”. Hall, who finished second in 2015, 2016 and 2018, said it was a relief to finally win the championship on what turned out to be an emotionally challenging day. “I have been through this [a world championshipdeciding race] four times before, but there was more pressure this time because it

was the last chance to do it with the race ending,” he said. A decorated fighter pilot with the Royal Australian Air Force, Hall ended his Red Bull Air Race career with one world championship, seven race wins and 30 podium finishes. He acknowledged the title was an important career goal and admitted he was concerned about being the “most famous bridesmaid in history”. “I try not to say that I deserve stuff, but we have always been there, and we have always been pushing the championship leaders,” he said. “To be on the podium five times for the championship and not get one would have been something you don’t get over for the rest of your life.” Hall, who operates out of Lake Macquarie Airport, will attend his first public event back home during AirVenture Australia’s show in Parkes from 20 to 22 September. - Ben Murphy

Place the mushrooms in a bowl and pour the buttermilk in to coat. Let it sit for a couple of minutes.

Preheat your oven to 200°C (fan forced). In a medium sized bowl using a whisk, mix together the flour, panko breadcrumbs, baking powder and herbs and spices. Set aside. the oven, then add the melted butter so it coats the base of the dish. Arrange the mushrooms on top, without touching the sides. Bake for 10 minutes, uncovered. It’s the world’s most-loved jukebox musical, but not as you know it. Mamma Mia! takes to the stage at Newcastle’s Civic Theatre for the first time from 25 October to 9 November, courtesy of The Very Popular Theatre Company. While hit after ABBA hit and an expertly crafted set imported from Sydney will sweep you off your feet and transport you to the Greek islands, you’ll have an inkling you’re not too far from home with hints of the Hunter peppered throughout. “One of the dads says he grew up in East Maitland, then he later changes his story to say Bennetts Green,” says Daniel Stoddart, who plays Sam Carmichael – one of three potential dads to bride-to-be Sophie Sheridan. “[Director] Erin James has really worked to give the show that Novocastrian feel, so, while you may have seen it before, you haven’t seen this version.” Nick Stabler (Harry Bright) and James Chapman (Bill Austin) round out the cast for the three dads, joining Phoebe Bayliss as Sophie and Rachelle Schmidt-Adnum as her mother, Donna. The heroines were most notably played by Amanda Seyfried and Meryl Streep in the 2008 film adaptation of Catherine Johnson’s play, in which

Produced in thousands of languages the world over, the musical was especially popular on Broadway, where it enjoyed a 14-year run. Locals know it as ‘The Barn’. Convict-built in 1836, the sprawling sandstone property lies in Old Bolwarra, near Maitland, and is bordered by murraya hedges on three sides, which isolate its garden from the outside world. Not for much longer. This unique piece of history, along with its newly established cottage garden and pond, will be on display across the weekend of 21 and 22 September as part of the annual Maitland Garden Ramble. The event is organised by the Maitland Black & White Committee, with funds raised going to Vision Australia – the leading provider of blindness and low vision services in the country. Committee member Helen Moyle said the ramble was getting bigger every year. “We’re drawing people from all over now and people keep coming back,” she said. The first two gardens will be found in East Maitland. The ramble then heads to a 60-acre property in Windella, before making its way to

Anambah House, Anambah. This 1889 residence is one of the state’s most significant Victorian grazier’s properties, while the house itself has hosted many famous folk, including Dame Nellie Melba, Governors, and the Earl of Dudley. For the first time, visitors here will be greeted with several displays. “Out at Anambah House, I’ve let the sponsors put everything up on display – we don’t have one person who has the grant for Maitland Garden Ramble, it’s the Maitland Black & White Committee, so all the sponsors pay the same thing,” Moyle added. “I’ve also got a display from Vision Australia – that’s where our money goes and no one knows exactly what it’s all about, so, this year, people will be able to talk to people from Vision Australia.” The ramble rolls on to Old Bolwarra, stopping at Bolwarra House and ‘The Barn’. The final two gardens are in Largs. The event will go from 10am

in the garden

To keep your tomatoes from looking like this, paint a mix of Malathon and Vegemite onto timber stakes to ward off fruit fly.

Keep fruit fly at bay Well, it’s September and hopefully spring is here to stay as it is time to become enthusiastic about growing vegetables. Did you let your veggie garden fi ll up with weeds during winter? If so, then your fi rst job will be to dig out the weeds, add compost such as mushroom and cow manure, dig over well and leave for a week before planting. Vegetable gardens need full sun to provide good crops, especially tomatoes, which many gardeners have already planted. This brings me to the real problem of fruit fly, which isn’t a consideration at this point in time, but be prepared as when tomatoes begin to ripen,

the fly will attack. Prepare and plant your beds. If you prefer an organic product, apply Neutrog Rocket Fuel – totally organic for tomatoes, vegetables and fruit. If the small green grubs begin eating the plants, apply tomato dust regularly. If this doesn’t control the pests, spray with tomato, insect and fungus spray. Once fruit becomes more mature, apply Flourish Vegie & Tomato fertiliser in the water on a weekly basis. What next? When planting, use a timber stake and paint it with a mixture of Malathon and Vegemite – no particular ratio, just mix to a paintable past. The female fly is attracted to the Vegemite and the Malathon kills her. But, most importantly, today’s gardeners need to use fruit fly traps to grow vegetables successfully in the summer, which contain a wick that can be replaced at reasonable cost. I think it is worth all the effort for better flavoured fruit. Spring growing isn’t restricted to tomatoes; it’s time to plant lettuce, basil, cucumbers, beans and, this year – courtesy of Oasis – purple carrots!

IN THE GARDEN JUDY SHARPE

THIS WEEK • Plant passionfruit in well-manured soil. • Apply sugar cane and Saturaid to beds to prevent evaporation, especially in fruit and veggie gardens. • The soil should be warm enough to plant out corn. • Divide agapanthus now before flower canes begin to set, water well and apply Flourish.

Based on John Le Carre’s 1974 novel, and starring Gary Oldman and Colin Firth (pictured), the hunt is on for a Soviet mole who has penetrated the upper ranks of the British secret service, which Le Carre aptly named “The Circus”.

Collateral is a masterful study of deception and coincidence. Jamie Foxx is revelatory in his role as Los Angeles cab driver Max, who opens his door to the suave, sophisticated Vincent (Tom Cruise, pictured). A striking grey suit and direct manner suggest that Vincent is a corporate type however, Vincent is actually a hit man and forces Max to drive him from hit to hit.

Miss Peregrine’s Home For Peculiar Children Saturday, PRIME7, 7pm, PG (2016)

There is surely no director better suited to transferring Ransom Riggs’ dark, fantastical world from the page to the screen than the master of weird Tim Burton. The tale, which is every bit as peculiar as the children therein, sees young Jacob (Asa Butterfield) discover a mysterious island, where he finds a refuge, overseen by the imposing Miss Peregrine (Eva Green, pictured), which is filled with children who possess all sorts of strange powers.

Power, authority, popularity, light and life are the characteristics of the Sun, Harry’s ruling planet in the year ahead. It will be a time of shining possibilities, full of success and a good year for him to start a new enterprise or a large scale project. It may even mark the news of pregnancy and birth of his second child and this time it will be a daughter. He must make sure he allows time to take good care of his health and stamina.

ARIES 21 MAR – 20 APR

CANCER 22 JUNE – 22 JULY

LIBRA 24 SEPT – 23 OCT

CAPRICORN 22 DEC – 20 JAN

The Full Moon on the 14th warns you to be careful of undermining yourself; your emotions are strong at this time which could cause you to overreact or to misuse your power. Old health issues connected to stress may reappear so book an appointment with your health professional.

The Full Moon on the 14th indicates that you could get hot under the collar about the perceived arrogance coming from certain people or those who are ignorant and uneducated about certain issues. Perhaps you could approach this as an opportunity for a lesson in tolerance!

The Full Moon on 14 September indicates a connection with health practitioners, either because you require their help or someone close does. There could be work projects carried on in secret, e.g. preparing to set up a small business of your own while continuing at your usual job.

The Full Moon on the 14th indicates that you may have a feeling that you can’t continue any longer in the same old way. The chances are the frustrations and the problems which are affecting your working life will spill over into your personal life as well.

TAURUS 21 APR – 21 MAY

LEO 23 JULY – 23 AUG

SCORPIO 24 OCT – 22 NOV

The Full Moon on 14 September may see frustrations regarding friendships and associations, your attitude may be stubborn and impractical. It would be wise to be mindful of what you say and how you act as someone is going to take offence at your behaviour.

The Full Moon on 14 September indicates that if you have been travelling towards a separation, this could be when you may bring it about. There will be major endings and beginnings around this time which might include setting up a new home or dismantling a former household.

The Full Moon on the 14th indicates that your emotions could be going through a strange time and you may not know exactly how to deal with certain people, especially younger ones in your life. Avoid seeking revenge when you realise that a trusted friend has deceived you.

The Full Moon on 14 September indicates that your romantic drive will be heightened; be careful though not to stray, especially if you are committed elsewhere or there will be consequences to pay! You may have some kind of professional contact with the police, private detectives or hospitals.

GEMINI 22 MAY – 21 JUNE

VIRGO 24 AUG – 23 SEPT

SAGITTARIUS 23 NOV – 21 DEC

PISCES 20 FEB – 20 MAR

The Full Moon on the 14th warns that frustrations at work are likely and a major setback is possible. Do your best to be prepared for a rebuilding time. There will also be more dealings with your mother or other older female friends and relatives this month.

The Full Moon on the 14th indicates that you’re going to find it difficult to be objective and may require both freedom and security at the same time. Avoid being a lead foot or breaking other laws as you’re likely to have the rule book thrown at you.

The Full Moon on the 14th indicates that you may be feeling somewhat insecure and could retreat from the outside world into the comfort and security of what is familiar. This is a time when secrets and deceptions might emerge in an uncomfortably embarrassing way.

The Full Moon on the 14th indicates that the intensity of your feelings will take some living with this week. Be very careful of playing mind games or getting involved in power plays as these will only deplete your energy. You will be more decisive and dynamic than ever before.

My favourite things THEATRE

It is my great love. I probably see 50 shows a year. My favourite local theatres are Royal Exchange in Bolton Street and Newcastle Theatre Company in Lambton (of course!) Earlier this year I performed in NTC’s production of Quartet.

TAFE TAFE is the powerhouse of the Australian economy and a great driver of social justice, yet has been consistently neglected and undermined by both sides of politics. The people I worked with at Hunter TAFE were amazingly skilled and dedicated, and so many students have gone on to great things.

Claire Williams

NEWCASTLE THEATRE COMPANY PRESIDENT

READING What a joy reading is! I like to read books associated with places I’ve visited or am planning to visit. I’m currently reading books about Chinese history in preparation for a trip there later this month. What a hotbed of intrigue and scandal Shanghai was in the mid-war period!

Credit Maddie Richards

Claire is president of Newcastle Theatre Company (NTC), probably the busiest community theatre company in Australia. NTC faced a crisis earlier this year with an unexpected bill of over $100,000 for essential fire safety work to meet new council regulations. As a volunteer-based community theatre company, this was well beyond NTC’s means yet, if they didn’t do the work, they were in danger of closure. NTC’s supporters responded magnificently, with donations so far totalling nearly $40,000! In addition, it was announced this month that NTC had won a grant from the state government worth $190,000! Claire has been actively involved in the arts in Newcastle for many years, as an actor, director, voiceover artist, MC, and arts manager. As Faculty Director Creative Industries at Hunter TAFE, she led a team of creatives in film, design, fashion, art, music and theatre. From 2014-18 Claire worked on an ARCfunded project at The University of Newcastle mapping the creative industries in the region.

VOLUNTEERING I recently attended the Newcastle Volunteer Service Awards run by the office of Sharon Claydon, Federal Member for Newcastle, where two of our NTC volunteers were honoured, and it struck me that volunteering encapsulates the best of human nature.

NOEL COWARD Our next show at NTC (5-17 October) is Noel Coward’s Blithe Spirit, directed by Julie Black. This is such a funny, droll, glamorous play. It is set in the 1940s but examines the age-old conundrum – what to do about the “ex”? The lead character is literally haunted by his ex-wife after she is channelled at a séance by the mysterious Madame Acarti. I’m so looking forward to it!
