This week... From the editor I don’t profess to know volumes about politics (only what I choose to engage in to stay informed), but I do know I’ve become the type of person who finds settling in with a glass of wine and my dog to watch live election results… exciting. My teenage self would be rolling her eyes. That’s exactly what I did on Saturday night as the NSW state election unfolded. I giggled when one Twitter user’s tweet flashed across the screen during the ABC’s coverage, in response to election analyst Antony Green’s remark that results were flowing in slower than usual: “I don’t mind. Democracy is worth the wait”. I took a swig of wine in agreement. I’m not surprised that no Hunter MPs were ousted. Most of our electorates have been safe Labor seats for at least a few terms, if not more. The same security can be said for Lake Macquarie, where most residents have clearly come to know and love Independent Greg Piper. It was a close race in the Upper Hunter, but no upsets there, either. The majority of Hunter Region voters being Labor supporters, I suspect many are somewhat disappointed that NSW premier Gladys Berejiklian’s government was re-elected. But that’s the way the democracy cookie crumbles. Now, back to my next favourite thing after watching politics: writing about it. - Georgia Osland

news Hunter backs Labor in seven out of nine state electorates Every last Hunter MP retained their seat in the 2019 NSW state election. There were no major upsets across the region, save for a close tussle between Upper Hunter incumbent Michael Johnsen (Nationals) and his Labor rival, Melanie Dagg. While most Hunter seats were called with confidence by early Saturday evening, Upper Hunter was too close to call until Ms Dagg conceded defeat late in the peace. As at Tuesday, when Newcastle Weekly went to print, 80.4% of the vote had been counted and Mr Johnsen received 52.3% of first-preference votes, while Ms Dagg came up short on 47.7%. The Nationals have held the seat since 1981 and gained a 0.01% swing in this election. Elsewhere in the region, voters backed Labor candidates as they traditionally have done, except in Lake Macquarie, where Independent crossbencher Greg Piper was elected for a fourth term. He claimed an undeniable 73.4% of first-preference votes (79.6% of the vote counted as at Tuesday), leaving his Labor competitor Jo Smith for dust on 26.6%.

In Labor footholds Newcastle and Wallsend, Tim Crakanthorp (voted in at the 2014 byelection) and Sonia Hornery (sitting MP since 2007) enjoyed 10.5% and 4.5% swings to their party, respectively, while Port Stephens incumbent Kate Washington’s margin increased by 1.6%, re-elected for a second term. In Swansea, Labor’s Yasmin Catley was also elected for a second term, after winning the seat in 2015 from Independent candidate Garry Edwards, who had previously been a Liberal party member but resigned during the Independent Commission Against Corruption hearings. Ms Catley had secured 60.4% of firstpreference votes by Tuesday, well ahead of major competitor Dean Bowman (Liberal) on 39.6%, although there was a 2.5% swing against the Labor party in this electorate. Charlestown, Maitland and Cessnock all took small hits to Labor – being 1%, 0.7% and 3.5%, respectively – but it wasn’t enough to topple the electorates’ incumbents. Former Lake Macquarie mayor Jodie Harrison, who first won the seat of Charlestown

in 2014, claimed victory once more with 62.1% of the vote, up against Liberal candidate Jenny Barrie on 37.9% (79% counted). Maitland MP Jenny Aitchison was elected for her second term with 63.1% of the vote compared to 36.9% for Liberal candidate and Maitland councillor Sally Halliday (83.9% counted). With 68.2% of the Cessnock vote counted, Clayton Barr celebrated his third victory in the Lower Hunter seat with 68.5% of firstpreference votes, while Nationals representative Josh Angus trailed on 31.5%. On a state level, Gladys Berejiklian was re-elected as NSW premier and the LiberalNational Coalition successfully formed a majority government. Meanwhile, former NSW Opposition Leader Michael Daley, who stood aside after the election loss, announced on Tuesday he would not recontest the Labor party leadership after the upcoming federal election was held. That position is temporarily filled by Penny Sharpe. - Georgia Osland

news Professor steers discussion on driverless vehicles The transition to electric and driverless cars has been hailed in some quarters as arguably the most transformational social development since the Internet. Autonomous vehicles are being tested around the world as cities, governments and communities embrace the emergence of driverless technology. Newcastle aims to join a select number of Australian cities in a trial this year, with the council seeking qualified operators for a driverless shuttle bus. An expert in neuropsychology believes that, while mass transport is almost here, fully autonomous vehicles may still be “at least a generation” away. Professor Kristen Pammer, who studies attentional allocation

in driving, reading and dyslexia, gave a free public lecture at the Newcastle Conservatorium last week on Autonomous Vehicles: Fact vs Fiction. She says there are different stages of automation. Categories range from zero, where the human oversees the driving, through to five, in which no human driver is required and everyone can be a passenger. “Cars that don’t require a driver, steering wheel or foot pedal are, in my personal opinion, about a generation away,” she tells Newcastle Weekly. Professor Pammer believes the introduction of fully autonomous vehicles will lead to an increase in safety. Worldwide, more than 1.3 million

people, including about 1,000 in Australia, are killed in car accidents each year, with roughly 93% of those caused by driver error. “It will save billions of dollars in terms of car crashes and injuries,” Professor Pammer says. “Then there’s the smart city development – it will [help to] reduce

congestion, emissions, and make transport more efficient. “But these [advantages] are really only going to become apparent once we have full autonomy and a connected system. “Therein lies the problem – to get to that point.” Continued on page 12

YOUR NEIGHBOURS With an alarming 40-50% of older people proven to be effected by loneliness and social isolation1 leading retirement village provider, The Oak Tree Group, recently funded a study by CQ University to investigate common causes, effects and practical interventions to mitigate future risk. It’s not uncommon to live alone approaching the age of 80. Mostly due to widowhood, loss of social networks, family relocating and friends passing away. There is significant risk that loneliness can cause many health conditions including anxiety, anger, low self-esteem and even accelerate the physical ageing process. But retirement does not need to be a lonely time, says The Oak Tree Group who funded the study to gain understanding and foresight to assist. Retirement Villages provide the opportunity for older people to live in a community where people are of a similar age, background and may have similar interests.

motivate residents to participate in activities, mingle, make new friends and emotional and fulfilling connections. “Being surrounded by like-minded neighbours and friends whom all live a short distance away, means even those with mobility needs can easily mobilise around the village, visit neighbours and seek support with little effort,” he said. Retirement Villages have also become a hub or centralised meeting point for external providers to visit/assist/provide information to older people. “Our villages regularly have educators, care givers, industry professionals, and emergency aides visit the village to meet with residents giving them equal opportunities to seek the advice, help and support they may need,” said Mr Bindon. “With this comes the peace of mind to both our residents, and the families of our residents, in the knowing that there is a network of friends and support on hand and that should our residents ever feel lonely there is always a friendly neighbour next door.” Start your next chapter in retirement in a compassionate and caring community with Oak Tree.

“Our communities immediately create an environment where social interaction, connectivity and group engagement is naturally encouraged and then nurtured by passionate staff,” says Managing Director Mr Mark Bindon.

Police have pleaded with motorists and pedestrians in Newcastle’s CBD to take more care around the light rail corridor after several near-misses in the first month of operation. Meanwhile, a spokesperson for Keolis Downer – the private operators of Newcastle Transport – believed the city’s $368 million light rail was “already showing its worth” after patronage data revealed almost 115,000 customer journeys took place in the first month of operation. Keolis Downer Hunter corporate affairs director, Andrew Fletcher, said he was pleased to see customers jump on board. “Patronage data shows more people [are] catching light rail than were previously catching the 110 rail replacement bus,” he said. “Light rail is already showing its worth as a valuable part of Newcastle’s integrated transport network, with almost half of all Newcastle light rail journeys involving a transfer to, or from, another mode of transport. “We continue to work closely with Transport for NSW to consider long-term transport planning to connect people with key locations that will improve transport services for Newcastle.” - Ben Murphy

patrols of the Hunter Street transport system since its launch on 18 February. One incident involved a driver who went onto the rail track, crossed to the wrong side of the road into the path of an oncoming tram, and then proceeded through a red light before police could stop the vehicle. “The light rail has been up and running for more than a month and the vast majority of people are aware of the changed road network and have adapted to the changes,” chief inspector Calder said. “There are some drivers who are not paying attention and are making serious mistakes, with their actions endangering themselves and others along Hunter Street and Stewart Avenue. “Officers from Traffic and Highway Patrol have observed several near-misses during [the] first month of operation, with the most common offences being vehicles driving on the tram tracks; running red lights at crossings; and pedestrians – who are often distracted and looking at their phones – jaywalking across the tracks.”

news From page 6 Professor Pammer argues potential issues include hijackings of the computer system; legal implications if there is an injury or crash; and moral decision-making dilemmas when a human cannot take control. She says, when a person is engaged in non-driver related tasks, such as checking emails or sleeping, it can take between eight to 25 seconds to formulate a response. This, according to Professor Pammer, will potentially lead to a situation where the driver is locked out in an emergency because they cannot respond in time. “So, what decision does the car make?” she asks. “You’re now handing that over to the vehicle, which is effectively a robot. “In the event of an inevitable crash and loss of life, there might

news Council ahead of game on flood response Newcastle has been ranked the 15th most flood-prone federal electorate in Australia. Research conducted by the Insurance Council of Australia (ICA) revealed the top 20 most flood-prone areas by the number of land parcels exposed to flood probabilities, ranging from the most frequent to the largest possible flood. One of four cities in NSW, Newcastle came in at 20,078 [land parcels]. The insurance council analysed official flood data collated from governments across Australia for the industry’s National Flood Information Database and matched it against federal electoral boundaries for ease of comparison. ICA General Manager of Risk and Disaster Planning, Karl Sullivan, said the results were a wake-up call to all levels of government about the

urgent need to prioritise investment in flood mitigation. “Some communities within these federal electorates are governed by local councils with comprehensive flood-risk mitigation programs,” he said. “Others may lack the capacity and funding to carry out the required work.” Newcastle council told Newcastle Weekly it was well ahead of the game in terms of flood-risk mitigation. “City of Newcastle has adopted Floodplain Risk Management Plans for [the] Newcastle City Wide and Wallsend Commercial Area,” the spokesperson said. “These plans detail a number of actions that City of Newcastle is in the process of implementing to reduce flood risk across the LGA. “These actions include land use

planning, development controls, flood mitigation works, [a] flash flood alert service, flood education campaigns and [an] adopted strategy for Low Lying Areas.” The council encouraged those who lived and worked in the Newcastle area to register for its flash flood alert service via the council’s website. During a high rainfall event that has the potential to cause flooding, the service sends registered users notifications via SMS, email or recorded voice message, warning what type of flood risk is anticipated. The council’s online interactive flood risk map shows parts of Wallsend (including the notorious Tyrrell Street bridge, which is soon to be replaced), Jesmond, Kotara, Merewether, The Junction, and Sandgate as being at “high risk”, with some affected by the Hunter

EALTH LITIGATION is often complex and involves people who have sometimes suffered very serious injuries. Jane Bulter is ready for the challenge after joining the team at The Law Office of Conrad Curry to practice in medical law. Ms Bulter, a senior associate health lawyer, has worked in personal injury litigation since 2001 and holds a Masters in Health Law. She highlights the problem of a power imbalance between doctors and patients. “Doctors have been through years of complex scientific training in their particular specialities. A patient who has no medical training has very little choice but to rely on the doctor’s advice,” she says. “It is hard for a patient to understand the scientific rationale behind their treatment and elderly people, particularly, often don’t ask

Ms Bulter reflected that health law also includes mental health law. “Patients in mental health facilities should receive appropriate care and treatment and it is very important that the correct procedures are followed when a patient is scheduled.” The Law Office of Conrad Curry is a leader in the provision of legal services across its practice areas in Newcastle and the Hunter region. Vision for complex

Trailer-loads of material

Port Stephens Council wants to transform the existing King Park Sports Complex at Raymond Terrace into a regional destination. Some of the aspirations include developing the site to attract people from the wider Port Stephens area and beyond; and catering for several sporting codes, higher grade teams, state and national competitions, and community events. The project is currently in stage one, which involves consultation with West Ward Sports Council members to identify the needs and expectations for the various sporting communities. The general community is also encouraged to offer suggestions to mould the draft concept designs. Visit portstephens.nsw.gov.au to provide feedback by 3 April.

Lake Macquarie council will give away up to 1,000 trailer-loads of organic material this weekend to improve backyard gardens and other green sites. The council shredded an estimated 38,000 cubic metres of trees, shrubs and other green material after the 2015 super storm. About two-thirds have already been used for soil improvement and site remediation throughout Lake Macquarie. The giveaway will take place from 8am to 1pm on Saturday 30 March at the former Teralba Worm Farm, on Griffen Road, Teralba – off Racecourse Road. For those who can’t make the event, the council will also host free giveaways of compost from its green bin service later this year.

news Cathie’s gift of knowledge As a 50th birthday present, single mum Cathie Renfrew decided to give herself the gift of knowledge. So, she enrolled in a Certificate IV in marketing and communication at TAFE NSW Newcastle. “My 50th birthday present was to give myself 12 months to work out what I wanted to do when I grew up,” she says. “[This] included studying full-time at TAFE NSW, and then I got the call that has literally changed my life.” Just one day after her 51st birthday, Cathie landed her first full-time job in 25 years. She now works as a senior project officer in the secondary education sector in Sydney. According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics, more than one million Australians change jobs every year, while about half of those move to a different industry or career. By 2023, more than 90% of new jobs are predicted to need a higher skillset than previously required. Many professional and service roles demand university or Vocational Education and Training (VET) qualifications, however, quite a few

of the jobs expected to grow strongly need little or no formal training. Some of the jobs tipped to flourish include aged and disability carers, registered nurses, child carers, software and applications programmers, waiters, and education aides. Cathie says she is well aware of the benefits of topping up your occupational expertise. “It’s never too late to give yourself opportunities to go in a different direction,” she says. “My time at TAFE NSW enabled me to enhance existing industry skills and knowledge, and gain confidence, which you can tend to lose as you get older.” She adds her children are proud of her new qualifications, as well as an award she won during her studies and, of course, her new role. “My kids are really pleased and proud of me, which makes me a bit teary,” she says. “When I decided to study, they said ‘great’, because I was finally doing something for myself after working various part-time roles to fit in around them, because that’s what you do as a mother.

news Hunter leaders clock up 35 years

Newcastle Men’s Probus Club members Dick Delbridge, Lindsay Threadgate and Frank Rice. Photo: Peter Stoop

A club whose membership reads like a who’s who of Hunter business and industry leaders over the past half a century is celebrating its 35th anniversary. Newcastle Men’s Probus Club’s circle includes former BHP executives, RAAF officers, manufacturers, university academics, retailers and more. Retiring president Keith Lynch said the club’s membership in recent months had included representatives of the NorthConnex tunnel project at the Sydney end of the M1 and Revitalise Newcastle, as well as former radio sports broadcaster, Gerry Collins. “While there are a number of special-interest activities for members, including a walking group, bowls and visits to places of interest, the major interest for members is the monthly meeting to hear our guest speakers,” Mr Lynch said. At the club’s annual president’s luncheon tomorrow (Friday 29 March), one of the original members, Oscar Westbury, and new president David Brown will cut a celebratory cake in front

of about 70 members and guests. Mr Brown said Probus provided an opportunity for retired and semi-retired professional and business people to gather regularly to exchange ideas, listen to guest speakers and enjoy social events. He will be presented with a certificate acknowledging the milestone by a representative of South Pacific Probus. Club secretary Frank Rice said Probus had its origins in the United Kingdom in the 1960s. “Most clubs have their origins in Rotary Clubs, as did ours, when in 1984 Newcastle Rotary called a meeting at which Mr Harry Le Marchant was elected first president of the Probus club,” he said. “The original meeting to form our club was held at the Newcastle Masonic and City Bowling Club above King Edward Park, and later at Newcastle Jockey Club. “In January 2018, the meetings moved to the ANZAC rooms at Souths Leagues Club.” Newcastle Men’s Probus Club welcomes new members. City celebrates diversity Dancers and performers from across the globe lit up the stage as part of Lake Macquarie’s Harmony Day celebrations. The annual event, which took place at Charlestown Square last Thursday, highlighted the city’s rich

diversity, with more than 10% of residents born overseas and almost 5% hailing from non-English speaking backgrounds. Acts included One Voice Mob, Salafai Dance Academy, Gambirra MOB and Connor Wink, while local

community service providers, such as Centre for Hope, MAX Solutions, Northern Settlement Services, Hunter Multicultural Communities, Ability Links and St Vincent de Paul, hosted information stalls. Event ambassador, Matt Purcell, also provided personal insights into his own unique story. The 30-year-old was born in South Korea but immigrated to Australia as a foster child. He has experienced firsthand the challenges and joys of being an Australian with an ethnic background. “I did experience some racism through primary school for my ethnicity,” he said. “But I think Australia has become more accepting of different cultures and nationalities, particularly over the past decade.” Mr Purcell urged everyone to embrace Harmony Day and the positive messages of inclusion it promoted.

“Human beings flourish when we celebrate cultural differences – not oppose them,” he said. “Life is generally hard, and suffering is built into the framework of existence, so we need to find things that bring our strengths out in one another.” This year marked the 20th anniversary of Harmony Day.

A first-of-its-kind toolkit will support lawyers in their efforts to identify and combat elder abuse. Newcastle Law School representatives, professor John Anderson and Shaun McCarthy, have worked with the University of Technology Sydney (UTS) and the state government to produce a new line of defence. The Identifying and Acting on Elder Abuse toolkit includes background information, guidance on how to approach conversations with those at risk, checklists, screening questions, and online resources to find pathways for referral. Despite regular contact with the elderly, professor Anderson said the team found legal practitioners were not well

supported. “Lawyers are involved in developing or changing wills, designating power of attorney and other financial decisions that carry huge weight for someone considering the next stage of their life,” he said. “This can be a particularly tricky area, especially when conversations can be short and if the elderly client’s family are involved in, or even controlling, those conversations. “Elder abuse often happens behind closed doors, hidden away from society. “However, as our population ages, our community is more comfortable engaging with a range of providers who need to be aware of, and feel confident

identifying, the warning signs.” Professor Anderson believed it was often necessary for lawyers to take on a role similar to social work, alongside their legal expertise. However, he said they had not been offered useful guidance in order to do so. He added the toolkit underwent a pilot program to ensure consistency and best practice. “We sincerely hope this resource becomes a widely-used tool for those on the front line to feel confident and supported in identifying elder abuse, especially as the interest in Elder Law increases in prominence and the national enquiries into elder abuse continue,” professor Anderson said. The toolkit officially launched at the UTS last week. Elder abuse is in the national spotlight.

The federal government has launched a free national hotline this month to report elder abuse, while the Royal Commission into Aged Care Quality and Safety is underway. Its commissioners are required to provide an interim report by 31 October 2019, before tabling a final version by 30 April 2020. - Ben Murphy

Folau targets historic feat NSW superstar Israel Folau may become Super Rugby’s outright record try scorer in Newcastle this week as the Waratahs embark on their first foray out of Sydney. Folau drew level with former All Black Doug Howlett on 59 tries during an emotion-charged clash

against the defending champion Crusaders on Saturday night. NSW snapped the Christchurchbased Crusaders’ 19-game winning streak, which dated back more than a year, with a 20-12 upset win. It was the Crusaders’ first match since the terror attacks.

SMILES ON HUDSON

Early tries to lock Jed Holloway and winger Cam Clark put the Waratahs in a dominant position, before Folau sealed the match in the 74th minute. NSW will now face the Sunwolves of Japan at McDonald Jones Stadium on Friday 29 March. Waratahs prop Harry JohnsonHolmes, who was born in Cowra but went to school and played rugby in Newcastle, said it would be a special fixture. “I am proud to call Newcastle home and the prospect of being able to play in front of my family and friends is exciting,” he said. “We are a team that represents the entire state and playing our home games in regions that represent our diverse supporter base is fantastic.” The Waratahs-Sunwolves clash will kick-off at 7.45pm. You can buy tickets through Ticketmaster.

Knights suffer narrow defeat Newcastle went down to the Penrith Panthers 16-14 at McDonald Jones Stadium on Saturday. The Knights posted first points when Kalyn Ponga booted a penalty goal, but Penrith hit back with a try to James Fisher-Harris. A piece of brilliance from Ponga saw the five-eighth fire a long ball to winger Edrick Lee, who dived over in the corner. However, Penrith responded with a freakish play and Frank Winterstein dived on the ball to make it 10-8 at the break. Isaah Yeo then barged over early in the second period to extend the lead, before James Maloney denied Lee with a brilliant try-saving tackle. Mitch Barnett scored with seven minutes left, but it was too late. The Knights take on the Raiders in Canberra on Friday 29 March.

Football festival kicks up a gear

Indigenous All Stars representative Ryan Walker at Dudley with Newcastle All Stars’ Chad O’Donnell ahead of the football festival.

An innovative football festival will showcase Newcastle’s diverse sporting talent this weekend. The All Stars festival is set to include four games of football and raise funds for the Mark Hughes Foundation when it kicks off on Saturday 30 March at No.2 Sportsground. Newcastle Rugby League has hosted the event for the past three years, but the 2019 edition will be boosted through a celebrity football match, as well as a beer, wine and food festival that will feature a variety of local vendors. “We are really excited to be hosting this event again and it is an honour to be hosting it alongside our charity partner, the Mark Hughes Foundation”, Newcastle Rugby League chief executive, Matt Harris, says. Hughes has been appointed captain of the celebrity team, which will tackle a mixed squad from Newcastle Rugby League. He says it’s a thrill to be involved in the event after forging a close connection with the organisation for more than two decades. “We’ve received lots of great support from the rugby league family and this day will be fantastic, with so much to do on and off the field, whilst

There’s no place like home Few films resonate with as many generations as The Wizard of Oz. Almost everyone can recall watching the 1939 classic as a child, or even as an adult. Well, you can relive those childhood memories when the arena spectacular comes to Newcastle Entertainment Centre on Friday 26 and Saturday 27 April. Just like Harvest Rain’s Grease – The Arena Experience, the Wizard of Oz iteration will feature a mass ensemble of more than 500 young performers as munchkins, poppies, Emerald City citizens, winkie and jitterbugs. After an exhaustive nationwide search, recent Brisbane Academy of Musical Theatre graduate Carly Bettinson will play the coveted role of Dorothy, originated by Judy Garland. Joining Bettinson on her journey down the Yellow Brick Road is Chris Geoghegan in the role of Scarecrow, Michael Nunn as the Tinman and Josh Whitten as the Lion. Aurelie Roque will play Glinda the Good Witch, while Bil Heit strikes fear in the hearts of children all over Oz as the Wicked Witch of the West. The all-new arena production is directed

by Tim O’Connor and choreographed by Callum Mansfield. “Our vision for this production is quite different to the Oz we’ve seen on stage before,” O’connor says. “The original 1939 film is one of my favourite movies of all time, but we don’t just want to replicate the movie on stage. Playing in the arena gives us the chance to full reimagine the land of Oz, so our interpretation is a bit grungier and moodier, a little less pantomime and a little more steampunk. “The technology we’re using to bring Oz to life for this production is state-of-the-art and totally breathtaking.” Tickets are available from $39 through Ticketek. time out cover story

Delta Therapy Dog, Zorro, with John Hunter Children’s Hospital patient, Harry Adlington. Photo: Peter Stoop

Dog days are over When you’re sick in hospital, a visit from a furry friend can turn your day around. Delta Therapy Dog Zorro is a crowd favourite among patients and staff on the J2 ward at John Hunter

Children’s Hospital. The eight-year-old border collie knows just how to turn on the charm to make everyone’s problems melt away, even if only for a moment. He also knows exactly where they

keep the bubbles in the Starlight Express Room (he’s a bit of a bubble fan). Zorro has been part of the Delta Therapy Dogs program for a year, visiting the children’s hospital, Speers Point Library and McIntosh Hostel at Teralba once a week with his volunteer handler, Cheryl Leach. Last Thursday he was at the children’s hospital and stopped by 12-year-old Harry Adlington’s bed to say hello. Harry, from Redhead, had been in hospital for two nights with an eye infection. “It felt really good [to meet Zorro]; I was really happy that I wasn’t alone,” he told Newcastle Weekly. It’s this reaction Delta Therapy Dogs volunteers live for – but they can’t do it on their own. They need the community’s support to help them spread the joy of animal companionship. The annual We All Need A Little Therapy dog walk is just one way the not-for-profit organisation raises

funds to keep going. This year’s four-kilometre walk will be held on Sunday 7 April from 10am at Speers Point. There will also be markets, food and entertainment. All money raised from the event will go directly to recruiting, assessing and placing new therapy dog teams into aged care facilities, hospitals, libraries and schools in the Newcastle and Hunter Region. Having seen firsthand the amount of joy Zorro has brought to others in just 12 months, Ms Leach encouraged the community to get out and support the worthy cause. “There’s not many people who don’t want to meet [a therapy dog],” she said. “People’s faces light up and it makes it all so worth it.” Register for We All Need A Little Therapy online via stickytickets.com. au or on the day from 9am. Entry costs $10 for one dog, $15 for two or $20 for three or more. - Georgia Osland

Hunter Drama students rehearse Fantastic Mr Fox at the studio.

Cunning cast take on children’s classic It’s hard to go wrong with a Roald Dahl classic. These April school holidays, you can catch Hunter Drama’s production of the 1970 title Fantastic Mr Fox at the Civic Playhouse.

With famous flourish, a vaguely criminal team of stooge farmers – “Boggis and Bunce and Bean: one fat, one short and one lean” – wage a war on a cunning band of frenzied foxes.

Whatever their prowess as poultry farmers, their sole objective is the extermination of the story’s hero: the noble, the clever, the Fantastic Mr Fox. Outwitted at every turn, the farmers’ ploys backfire, for Mr Fox devises a plan that will ensure full stomachs for not only his family, but all his friends, who celebrate with a sumptuous feast. Hunter Drama is renowned for presenting Dahl’s most-loved characters on stage and now, following last year’s hit production of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, under the direction of Hunter Drama founder Daniel Stoddart,

the Civic Playhouse stage will be transformed into the den and tunnels where Mr Fox keeps his family one step ahead of those dreadful farmers – complete with a 70s disco soundtrack and a modern twist. “I’ve had great success combining Dahl’s most-loved stories with young performers, and this version of Fantastic Mr Fox will not be like any version you would have seen before,” Stoddart said. The adventure starts on Wednesday 24 April. Book online through Ticketek or phone 4929 1977. All tickets are $35.65.

Enter to WIN Newcastle Weekly has four double passes to Fantastic Mr Fox to give away. To enter, email competitions@newcastleweekly.com.au with Fantastic Mr Fox in the subject line. Jeff Popple reviews three engaging novels from around the world. More of Jeff’s reviews can be found on his blog, murdermayhemandlongdogs.com The Lost Girls by Jennifer Spence

Marked for Death by Tony Kent

The Devil Aspect by Craig Russell

Simon & Schuster, $29.99

Elliott and Thompson, $29.99

Constable, $29.99

Sydney writer Jennifer Spence has crafted a haunting, clever novel about loss and opportunities. Stella inexplicably finds herself thrown back in time to 1997. Confused and disorientated, she comes to realise that she may have the opportunity to change the future and avert a coming family tragedy. Pretending to be her long-lost aunt, Stella embarks on a mission to save her family and solve the mystery of a 50-year-old disappearance. Some of the details do not hold up to scrutiny, but Spence excels in her reflections on life, memory and second chances and the changing face of Sydney.

Kent made a sparkling entry on the British thriller scene last year with his debut novel, Killer Intent. Now he has more than matched it. Marked for Death once more features London barrister Michael Devlin and his fiancé, television reporter Sarah Truman. The story opens with the brutal murder, by crucifixion, of a well-respected retired Lord Chief Justice. When a second murder occurs, Sarah begins to suspect that there is a link to her fiancé who is involved in a complex murder trial. This gripping thriller moves rapidly through its 430-odd pages and keeps the reader engaged as it twists its way to a suspenseful conclusion.

This engrossing historical thriller is set in Czechoslovakia in 1935. On the streets of Prague, someone is butchering women in a sickening manner reminiscent of London’s Jack the Ripper. As the police struggle to find the killer, young psychiatrist Viktor Kosarek makes his way to a small rural village where the revolutionary Orlu Asylum is housed in an ancient medieval castle. The Asylum is home to six of Europe’s worst murderers and it is Kosarek’s intent to study their psychology, but gradually he is drawn into the murders in Prague. This is a vividly described and fascinating novel that stays in the mind.

A deluxe night out Step right up, step right up. The circus – in just about the least conventional sense of the word – is coming to town. The world-famous Spiegeltent returns to Newcastle’s Civic Park for another huge month of top-shelf comedy, music, cabaret, dance and much more from Thursday 23 May to Sunday 16 June. The four-week festival is headlined by the seductive new cabaret extravaganza, Deluxe Deluxe, from the award-winning creators of Blanc de Blanc that enthralled audiences last year. A sexy and hilarious adults-only night out, Deluxe Deluxe is hosted by world-renowned artist, Scot Nery (HBO Comedy Festival and The Tonight Show). It features the glitterati of international circus and cabaret talent, including aerial artist Penelope Elena; the witty vocal stylings of Laura Hughes; rulebending ‘invertebrate’ Anthony Rodriguez; exotic temptress Zoe

Marshall; beautifully dangerous tigress Ailona; and the drop-dead gorgeous Busola. Deluxe Deluxe promises to deliver an evening beyond your wildest imagination. The 2019 program also includes American blues and roots sensation, Charley Crockett, who will be joined by Sienna Ferrell to make their Newcastle debut under the beautiful Victoria Spiegeltent. Australian comedy legends Wil Anderson, Dave Hughes, Matt Okine, Rhys Nicholson and Joel Creasey are also part of this year’s stellar line-up. Dutch for ‘mirror tent’, the Spiegeltent originated in Belgium in the late 19th Century as a travelling entertainment venue. The exquisite Victoria Spiegeltent is an extravagant big top tent, decorated with mirrors, stained glass, velvet and brocade with a beautifully old-world feel. Strut & Fret’s founding director, Scott Maidment, says,

Beat the Holiday rush!

Deluxe Deluxe features the glitterati of international circus and cabaret talent from around the world.

“After Newcastle couldn’t get enough of Blanc de Blanc last year, we’re excited to announce that the Spiegeltent is returning with an even crazier headline show. Added to this is a programme of sensational music and big-name comedy. This is a notto-be-missed experience for 2019 that is already selling fast.” Tickets are available from spiegeltentnewcastle.com

Autumn colour trends This autumn, design trends will embrace a rustic-luxe look, with rich, natural colours, midtone timbers and simple yet sophisticated styling, according to the experts at Dulux Australia. As the weather cools and our thoughts turn to retreating indoors, the look is all about bringing the outside in and creating cosy, joyful spaces that nurture and inspire. Set against a backdrop of warm timber and honeyed leather, expect to see soft grey-green – this season’s ‘new neutral’ – paired with shades of olive, dusty pink, and invigorating accents of rich, blue-green and ochre to create a sumptuous look that’s grounded in nature. Repair is one of four key palettes in the 2019 Dulux Colour Forecast ‘Filter’. Drawing inspiration from a variety of sources, including extensive market research and global trade fairs, the four, carefully-curated palettes reflect societal trends such as wellness, rejuvenation, environmental awareness and mindful consumption. Striking combinations, such as verdant green, chocolate, umber and sienna set a playful, optimistic tone, while soft, green-based grey has emerged as the neutral – and the ideal pairing for these naturebased hues. There’s a sense of quiet luxury

to this look, but it doesn’t come down to extravagant finishes or accessories. Rather, it’s the layering of natural colours and textures.

Autumn styling tips Combine natural finishes: Warm timber, leather and woven rattan can create a cosy and eclectic feel. Add a twist: Paint a bedhead or feature wall in an exhilarating shade of blue-green or ochre to spice up this palette’s warm greens and earthy tones. Create interesting displays: Scour antiques fairs and secondhand stores for unusual collectibles. Layer up textures and prints: Think cosy knits, aged leather, velvets and block prints. Introduce concrete: This finish will add an interesting twist to green tones and timber. Use Dulux Concrete Effect paint to upcycle small accessories or to create a feature wall. Set up a cosy corner: A comfortable armchair or a window seat with a few soft cushions is the perfect spot to spend an autumn’s afternoon with a good book. Dial down the lighting: Reduce harsh overhead lighting at night and set a cosy mood with a variety of table and floor lamps. Finish off with greenery: A trailing devil’s ivy on a bookshelf or a large, potted long-leaf fig in the corner of a room can provide a sense of calmness and reinforce a natural element.

in the garden

The bright, red berries borne on Cotoneaster plants are poisonous.

Beware of poisonous plants Houseplants have certainly increased in popularity, especially among young people who want clean air in their homes. I am often asked, “Will this plant affect or be poisonous to my pets, and even babies?” These questions are relevant, but I consider the garden to be more hazardous. For example, my dogs and cats have never eaten plants in my garden or inside, but no doubt this does happen with others.

Now in le t Newcas

IN THE GARDEN JUDY SHARPE

However, I do think they have a strong instinct about what they shouldn’t eat. For instance, my cats won’t touch milk that isn’t fresh. Because there are an estimated 550,000 known plant species, there are many plants that, if chewed or swallowed or touched by those allergic, can be dangerous. Once I was asked to identify a particular Coral Tree that was growing in a park – a vet sought my advice as each time a horse was

tethered there it became ill. After much research, there was only one tree in this genus that could affect horses. When Clare, my grandaughter, was young and we went on walks together, she was excited to see a ripe-looking cherry hanging over a neighbour’s fence – hence I began my education of plant species early as this was a highly poisonous Toxicophlia. At that time, my message was never eat anything in the garden unless you check. Some would say that tree should have been removed, but what would’ve happened if Clare had visited a friend whose family had Cotoneaster growing? The red berries look most attractive to children, but can be toxic – strangely, birds love them and eat them with no effect. It is important that children up to four, who are most likely to ingest berries, are supervised in the garden and, more importantly, discouraged from eating berries from any plants. Nerium, or

oleander, once so popular, can cause respiratory problems and skin rashes and can require emergency medical treatment. Last, but not least, one of my pet worries is Datura, commonly known as Angel’s Trumpets. Up to 2001, there were four recorded deaths of this plant being ingested in liquid or smoked.

THIS WEEK • The army grub and black beetles are still causing havoc in lawns – keep up treatments and water Seasol over damaged lawns to increase root production. • Before planting autumn flowers and winter veggies, prepare soil with poultry manure at least one week prior. • Autumn is the best season for planting – it is cooler (I hope) and yet there is still growing time left until real winter.

PICK OF THE WEEK Beauty And The Beast

Monday, GO!, 9pm, MA15+ (2009) Gerard Butler (300) (pictured) squares off against Oscar winner Jamie Foxx in this explosive revenge thriller from F. Gary Gray. Butler plays Clyde Shelton, a family man whose life is torn apart when his wife and daughter are tortured and killed during a grisly break-in. When one of the murderers gets off with a light sentence thanks to district attorney Nick Rice (Foxx), the frustrated widower takes justice into his own hands. Shelton targets not only the killer, but the entire legal system he believes conspired to deny justice to his family.

Sunday, SBS, 8.35pm, M (2015) Oozing intrigue, bizarre tales and a herd of celebrity believers, the Scientology religion is a fascinatingly easy target. Based on the page-turner by Pulitzer Prize winner Lawrence Wright, Going Clear scooped multiple Emmy Awards, including Best Documentary, and was the second mostwatched HBO documentary in the past decade. Adding to the doco’s cache, the Church of Scientology took a full-page ad in The New York Times condemning it before it even premiered.

Saturday, NBN, 7pm, PG (2017) Belle is no ordinary Disney princess. She reads, she fights, she tells it like it is and follows her own rules and Emma Watson brings the right amount of grace and grit to this live-action retelling of the 1991 animation favourite. The set and costume details are exquisite and the writers have done a marvellous job filling in some plot holes from the original. Dan Stevens (Downton Abbey) is unrecognisable as the surly Beast who slowly starts to thaw.

The year ahead is going to be a successful one for David, for making important plans, moves and changes at a time when he is going to gain power and his talents are going to receive recognition. It’s a time for him to think big, when he can occupy the limelight and wield power. He will discover a true feeling of faith and destiny both in himself and in events that occur. His career, ambition, and finances all go forward. Whatever he does with these 12 months he must aim high and, above all, be positive.

ARIES 21 MAR – 20 APR

CANCER 22 JUNE – 22 JULY

LIBRA 24 SEPT – 23 OCT

CAPRICORN 22 DEC – 20 JAN

This is an excellent time to develop your creative abilities and to beautify your surroundings, either by acquiring new furnishings, restoring or updating existing pieces or by interior decorating. Education and gaining experience from life’s adventures will be of paramount importance in coming months.

You may find ways of recycling goods that you have used before, or you may pick up a real bargain at a jumble sale or second-hand shop, thrift shop or a $2 dazzler. Your outlook on life will continue to change for the better. Love and friendliness will surround you.

You may be called upon to direct the affairs of your family or to assume more responsibility than usual in coming weeks. Your intuition will guide you strongly and there may be some kind of inner voice that keeps you from saying or doing the wrong thing.

Your mental outlook will be on the

new skills.

TAURUS 21 APR – 21 MAY

LEO 23 JULY – 23 AUG

SCORPIO 24 OCT – 22 NOV

AQUARIUS 21 JAN – 19 FEB

This is an excellent time on the work front and for belonging to a team or group of people. You’ll achieve a great deal more working with others than going it alone. If you decide to consult a financial specialist, you will get some useful advice.

Teamwork is the key to success over the next few weeks. If passion has been sadly lacking from your life, then focus on being more open and friendly with everyone you meet as a sense of confidence always helps to attract attention. Follow the counsel of your inner voice.

This is a time for fresh starts and new beginnings, so assert yourself, exercise your initiative and your creative powers. You will enjoy playing with whatever presents you may receive, especially if any have an artistic or creative bent. Your domestic and family life will be pleasant and peaceful.

GEMINI 22 MAY – 21 JUNE

VIRGO 24 AUG – 23 SEPT

SAGITTARIUS 23 NOV – 21 DEC

PISCES 20 FEB – 20 MAR

It is time to make plans and to put them into action, especially with your career or business. You will notice an improvement in your relationships with others now. Flirtations could turn into serious affairs, while affairs could turn into committed relationships.

If you have jobs that need to be done, the next few weeks are a good time to achieve them. But do take the opportunity to listen to music, read a romantic story or enjoy something beautiful as you seem to be in need of this kind of inspiration.

Socially this can be a busy time; you will become more in demand as you allow your true self to shine through. You’re likely to make new friendships that grow into longlasting associations. This is the ideal time to update technology, buy a new computer, mobile phone or car.

ball; you’ll feel more in control of your emotions than you have in recent months. This is the right time to promote your ideas and make any changes you have been thinking about, perhaps by learning some

Circulating and networking with others will bring a flood of concepts and notions for you to think about. It is a good time for finding work, starting projects or writing of any kind, so get going on that novel you’ve been thinking of for so long!

Your domestic life, family and loved ones are becoming increasingly important to you and you may have to assist those with greater problems than yourself. You may need to tone down your social or work life, so you can enjoy your home life more.

Diet less - enjoy more!

You’ve tried just about every diet under the sun… but you find yourself stress eating again and again. MENTORSHIP Through our jobs as a youth worker and a primary teacher, we love making a difference in the lives of young people. We have been so lucky to have great mentors in our lives who have helped us become the people we are today. It’s such a privilege to work with the Hunter’s youth each day and we feel we have a responsibility to do our best to help them become the best versions of themselves.

My favourite things FOOD For us, food is an insight into different cultures around the globe. One thing that is universal though, is that it brings people together and we love nothing more than sitting down to a meal with our friends and family. Newcastle’s booming multicultural food scene makes it easy for us to reminisce on our travels around the world and the food, which added to these amazing experiences.

FAMILY Family is everything to us and it’s amazing how regularly our families are “dropping by” at about dinner time these days. We could not have made the most of our MKR experience without the support of our families. Luke found it extremely difficult being away from his wife and young daughter while filming the show. Matt has a twin sister (no, they are not identical), who he shares a very close bond with.

Matt and Luke

MY KITCHEN RULES CONTESTANTS

Cricket mates Matt Gawthrop and Luke Stewart are currently competing on Channel Seven’s hit television series, My Kitchen Rules. Matt and Luke have played first grade together in Newcastle and are self-professed cricket tragics. They entered MKR to prove that the everyday Aussie bloke can cook amazing food. “I’m the captain of the cricket team but, in the kitchen, Luke’s definitely the head chef,” Matt says. Off the field, married father-of-one Luke is a primary school teacher while Matt is a youth worker, helping disadvantaged kids in the community. The duo believes their competitiveness will benefit them in the popular cooking show. “Anything that we’ve ever done in our lives, we’ve been really competitive, whether it be on the cricket field or now in the kitchen,” Matt adds. The 10th anniversary series of MKR airs at 7.30pm, Monday to Wednesday, and 7pm on Sundays. 70

BALANCE We believe that balance is important in every aspect of life. While chasing our dreams as cricketers, it was not uncommon for us to be the first to training and the last to leave. While our work ethic is borderline addictive, we also understand the importance of having a life outside of cricket and how crucial that is to success on the field. Part of this balance includes celebrating our own success and the success of others.

SPORT It’s no secret that we are cricket tragics, but we absolutely love all sport. Cricket has taken us around the world and has been the glue to many friendships across Australia, the UK, Asia and South Africa. We met when we were selected in the Hunter Academy of Sport Cricket Squad in 2006 and it’s safe to say that without cricket, there’s a good chance we may have never crossed paths.
