Our cover stars, this week are up-andcoming Newcastle-based thespians Tom Rodgers and Charlie O'Connell, who will be starring in Hunter Drama's mammoth production of Dreamworks' Shrek The Musical Jr at the Civic Theatre, as Shrek and Donkey respectively. While this is sure to be THE must-see show, this October school holidays, it also highlights what a coup it is for the theatre scene here in the Hunter to be able to secure such a high-profile production. Further, Hunter Drama will be taking the cast to the Junior Theatre Festival in the US, later in the year, giving our local performers the chance to strut their stuff in front of some of the industry’s heaviest hitters. When Hunter Drama last visited the festival in 2014, with their production of Disney's Little Mermaid Jr, they took home a most outstanding production award and performed in front of the likes of Thomas Schumacher, head of Disney Theatrical. While much is said about Newcastle being a breeding ground for sporting talent, Hunter Drama's successes also prove that our region can mix it with the world's best outside of the sporting arena as well. Here's to a bravura run for Shrek The Musical Jr. Have a great week. - Stephen Bisset

If you’ve been affected by institutional child abuse, there are a number of things you can do. When you are ready, talk it out with someone with whom you feel safe. You can call Lifeline on 13 11 14. Another option is to make an appointment for face to face counselling at one of our nine locations for just $10/hour.

news Domestic violence referral system only part-way bridges the gap new, streamlined referral system for victims of domestic violence has opened a Pandora’s Box of funding issues. Shadow Minister for the Prevention of Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault, Jenny Aitchison, says the state government’s Safer Pathway program will place increased pressure on services that are already underfunded by the government, such as women’s refuges and accommodation services. The program, which has already been trialed at six sites across NSW, will roll out in the Newcastle and Port Stephens Local Area Commands from November. It is designed to streamline and integrate the domestic violence reporting process, with police as the first port of call. Police will then determine if a victim’s health and safety is at immediate risk. If the case warrants it, the police will refer it to the Hunter Women’s Domestic Violence

Court Advocacy Service (WDVCAS). The WDVCAS is not a new service; it has a long history of helping domestic violence victims through Newcastle, Toronto, Belmont and Raymond Terrace courts in the Hunter (and others across the state). But under the Safer Pathway program, the service will sit in on fortnightly Safety Action Meetings between representatives from NSW Police, NSW Health, Family and Community Services, corrections and education sectors to decide on the best course of action for each case. The victim will then be referred down the line to relevant services, depending on what they need, from accommodation to counselling to medical services. Minister for the Prevention of Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault, Pru Goward, said the program would provide a “consistent and effective response” to domestic violence. (continued page 6)

Morpeth Business Association advertising moment

Morpeth’s shopping precinct is unlike anything else in the Hunter.

Tiny town packs a punch The village of Morpeth, settled in 1821, is nestled on the Hunter River and is well known for its heritage as being one of the largest river ports in NSW.

B

ut what prospective visitors might not know is that Morpeth is home to a vibrant, diverse shopping and dining precinct. The main attractions can be found in Swan Street and the surrounding laneways and carriageways where many of the shops and eateries are housed in Victorian terraces and National Trust listed buildings. Wandering the Village you will find Morpeth's shopping precinct is unlike anything else in the Hunter. Here you will see boutiques, manufacturing jewellers, antiques and all sorts of gift and homeware stores that strive to stock unique pieces you won’t find everywhere else. You can lose yourself in Campbell’s Store, find your favourite sweets at Miss Lily's Lollies and take home a furry friend from Teddy Bears Downstairs. Find the perfect outfit from the beautiful selection of boutiques on offer or search

for the meaning of life at our fantastic new age/spiritual gift and bookstores. Morpeth Gallery also hosts regular exhibitions and meet-the-artists events so be sure to call in and be amazed at the talent on show. In another coup for Morpeth, Christmas Lane will be re-opening for another merry season midAugust so pop on in to their store and be in awe. If you feel you need more than a day and want to soak up the country town atmosphere a little longer, there are some great bed and breakfast options available in the village, too. Of an evening you'll find The Morpeth Woodfire Pizza is open as well as The Commercial Hotel, which has a bistro and verandah bar for great views of the surrounding countryside. Maybe dare to peel back the surface of Morpeth's haunted past and do a Ghost Walk with Murray from Hunter Valley Ghost tours at Apparitions.

All the tea in Morpeth! Morpeth's uniqueness will be on display this month when the annual Teapot Festival comes to town. An exhibition of weird and wonderful teapots and tea cosies will be on display at Morpeth Gallery as well as over both levels of Campbell’s store from Thursday 18 August to Sunday 28 August.

news (from page 4) “Courageous victims who have been left traumatised and terrified will no longer have to shop around to get the services they need, nor will they have to re-tell their story to a multitude of government agencies,” Ms Goward said. But her shadow minister, Ms Aitchison, says while the program is a step in the right direction, it leaves questions surrounding funding unanswered. “The viability and success of the program will rely on appropriately funding service providers that women are referred to,” she said. “Many of these services across the state have consistently expressed their concerns that funding has not been increased to keep up with demand, and in some cases funding has been cut altogether. “The refuges are full; housing vacancy is next to zilch.” Furthermore, the government has indicated it will not provide any additional funds to cover the attendance of agencies at Safety Action Meetings. “Somebody’s got to fund it, otherwise it’s more work with less resources,” Ms Aitchison said. Ms Aitchison added that she was disappointed Maitland was not yet on the Safer Pathway roll-out schedule, given the Bureau of Crime Statistics and Research’s last quarterly report identified a 12.4% increase in reported domestic violence incidents in Maitland over the past five years to December 2015.

Strength in numbers residents’ action group has been formed to highlight and address community issues in the Mount Hutton-Windale area. The Mount Hutton Windale Residents Action Group is in its infant stages but is already gaining traction. Currently, the group meets on a needs basis at Lake Macquarie Tavern, with the next public meeting slated for Monday 22 July at 10.30am. Mount Hutton residents Susan Foster and Ray Hinton have been the main movers and shakers behind establishing the group. Ray has lived in the area a long time and saw a need for a residents’ action group. Susan said while the group was open to taking on board other issues, its first priority was to draw attention to the state of Scrubby Creek in the hopes that Lake Macquarie council would address flooding and pollution issues. Newcastle Weekly reported in June that the creek, which runs from Mount Hutton, behind Lake Macquarie Fair Shopping Centre, to Windale, was in a dire state, plagued by rubbish blockages which, over time, had caused the natural waterway to divert and flood in

times of heavy rain, drawing raw sewage out into the open. Susan said a handful of residents had come together under the umbrella of the residents’ action group to give weight to their concerns. The group has since been in contact with the council’s sustainability department, which was preparing a number of reports, Susan said. These included a riparian vegetation assessment report (to make recommendations on weed management) and a stream stability assessment (to make recommendations concerning stream erosion and sedimentation). The council has also undertaken some recent works to remove shopping trolleys and debris from the creek. But Susan says it’s not good enough. “We still feel that how [the council] is going to address these issues will not resolve the flooding,” she said. “[The residents’ action group] see it as a waste of money. It’s not going to solve anything.” For more information, email mwrag16@gmail.com - Georgia Osland

Scrubby Creek clean-up Lake Macquarie council workers have pulled 28 abandoned shopping trolleys, six car tyres and three bikes from Scrubby Creek. The creek, which runs from Mount Hutton, behind Lake Macquarie Fair Shopping Centre, to Windale, has caused much upset over past months, with residents raising concerns about health and safety hazards. Newcastle Weekly reported in June that the creek had been diverted in several sports by rubbish blockages, causing flooding and sewage overflow. Many residents have been less than impressed with the council’s management of the waterway, but mayor Jodie Harrison has assured the public the council is actively working to rehabilitate the site.

Getting messy in the name of science eird and wacky science experiments took centre stage at Wallsend Public School last week. Students from kindergarten to year 6 got their hands dirty and experimented with green slime and mini lava lamps. Principal Sandra Colman

said the activities modelled the school’s philosophy on alternative teaching methods. “We use alternative methods of learning and engaging activities to make learning exciting,” she said. While the activities were part of Education Week, they were a fun prelude to National Science Week,

which runs from 13 to 21 August. The annual government initiative celebrates science and technology and aims to engage the community in the fields of innovation and engineering. Events are happening all over the Hunter, including the Hunter Valley Electric Vehicle Festival. Held at Newcastle Kart Racing Club in Cameron Park on Saturday 13 and Sunday 14 August from 10am to 4pm, the festival showcases the latest and greatest in electric vehicles, clean energy and alternative transport. It is led by the University of Newcastle’s Tom Farrell Institute for the Environment. Some of the events include the EV Prize event, which sees high school students and privateers build and race their electric bikes,

Students from schools across the Hunter battle it out in a bid to make their robots do everything from dance to play soccer. Services for the Hunter Region’s 24,000 blind or visionimpaired have been given a boost with the recent opening of the Royal Society of the Blind (RSB) Hunter Region’s new Low Vision Centre. The centre was opened by the minister for the Minister for Ageing and Disability Services John Ajaka and will now make it possible for ophthalmologists, and optometrists, throughout the region to refer patients to the RSB in order to maximise the eyesight they still have as well as enhance their independence and quality of life. Funded by a $30,500 grant from the Newcastle Permanent Charitable Foundation, the centre will fill a critical need in the region according to foundation chairman Michael Slater.

Parliamentary Secretary for the Hunter Scot MacDonald, Newcastle Permanent Charitable Foundation Chairman Michael Slater, RSB Executive Director Glen Rappensbery, RSB Regional Manager Rebecca Horn, Minister John Ajaka and Royal Blind Society Chairman Barry Clarke at the opening of Newcastle’s new Low Vision Centre.

“The Hunter region is in critical need of services for people whose vision loss cannot be improved by glasses or contact lenses and this new RSB Low Vision Centre will

provide people in the Hunter with local access to essential support services.” The RSB Low Vision Centre is located at Suite 2, 47 Bolton Street, Newcastle.

Forum to debunk drug myths The epidemic of the drug ice and the legalising of marijuana for medical use are constant hot topics of conversation and controversy. South Leagues Club, Merewether will open its doors to a public forum, hosted by the Newcastle Institute, which aims to pull back the curtain of hype surrounding these to drugs and delve deeper into the facts. Professor Jennifer Martin, the leading doctor in a team of researchers from Newcastle University, who have been studying the medical use of marijuana, will talk in-depth about the research her team is currently undertaking. Dr Tarun Yadav, a psychiatrist who works with Hunter New England Health, will shed further light on the ice epidemic, pulling apart the myths and looking at just how bad this epidemic is compared to those of the past. The forum will be on Wednesday 17 August from 6pm. No booking is required and admission is by a $5 donation on the night.

Joining hands to help women

hey’re women helping women, and they mean business. Beaumont Street, Hamilton business owners Kylie and Suzanne Young (Cozzies Swimwear) and Kellie Mann (Lotus Fashion) have joined forces to help women in need. The trio are collecting preloved bras year-round to deliver to the Uplift Project, a Newcastle-based charity founded by Rachel Prest, which distributes donated bras to disadvantaged women in places like the Philippines, Bali, Sri Lanka and Cambodia. Mother-daughter duo Suzanne and Kylie have been collecting bras on behalf of Uplift for more than a year, but it wasn’t until recently that Kellie decided to jump on board, too. Both shopfronts are calling for donations of bras in small and large cup sizes, nursing bras, mastectomy bras and breast forms. Swimwear and new underwear are also accepted. Bumper year for Auxillary

Speers Point Public School students Harley Thomas, Lara Fernance and Jemma Webb relish in the school’s new books. Photo: Georgia Osland

The priceless gift of literacy As Dr. Seuss once wrote: the more that you read, the more things you will know; the more that you learn, the more places you’ll go. Thanks to a $19,000 boost for their school library, students at Speers Point Public School will be able to realise the popular children’s author’s wisdom. The school recently raised $8,500 through an online crowdfunding campaign to replenish its library, which was badly damaged in the April 2015 storms and left book stocks depleted. That figure was matched, dollar for dollar, by Dymocks

Children’s Charities. It was the first time the charity, which aims to tackle Australia’s declining literacy rates by providing new books for ‘priority’ schools (those that are disadvantaged in some way), had crowdfunded collaboratively with a school through its Library Regeneration Program. The school bought 1115 new books with the money raised. They were unveiled during the school’s Education Week activities last week. - Georgia Osland

ewcastle is set to turn a delightful shade of green when Hunter Drama’s production of Dreamworks’ Shrek The Musical Jr hits the Civic Theatre stage in the October school holidays. Producer and director Daniel Stoddart told Newcastle Weekly rehearsals were well underway and all signs pointed to an amazing production. “We actually had our first full choreography rehearsal last week and it’s looking fantastic,” he said. The Hunter Drama production is based on the Broadway version and

Stoddart said it offered a few new insights into Shrek, Princess Fiona, Donkey and Lord Farquaad.” “We get to learn a little bit more about Shrek and Fiona as we see them as kids as well as singing and dancing characters,” he said. “There are some songs in the show, like I’m a Believer, but the majority of the score features all new music and there will be all of the big, bright colourful costumes and there’s also a 15-metre long fire-breathing dragon, so we’ve definitely pulled out all of the stops for this one.”

cover story Stoddart added that the production was quite a coup for the region’s theatrical talent. “It gives our up-and-coming talent a great platform to showcase their skills and gives audiences the chance to see our next generation of theatrical talent.” Further, Hunter Drama will return to the US for the Junior Theatre Festival in Atlanta where it took out top honours for its 2014 production of Disney’s The Little Mermaid Jr. “It really is a fantastic foot in the door – last time we got to perform in front of Thomas Schumacher

who is president of Disney Theatrical and also for Kristen Anderson-Lopez and Robert Lopez who wrote the song Let it Go from Frozen,” Stoddart said. “Things like this really do show the kids that a career on the stage is very much obtainable and it also puts the Hunter on the map, which is just fantastic.” Dreamworks’ Shrek The Musical Jr will be on at The Civic Theatre, Newcastle from Thursday 29 September to Saturday 1 October. ewcastle will be be-bopping and swinging all over the place when the 29th annual Newcastle Jazz Festival kicks off at its new home of Wests Lambton later this month. More than 100 local and national musicians, performing across 30 bands, will take part in the annual, two-day celebration of jazz in all its forms. Festival publicist Sylvia Shearer told Newcastle Weekly there would be a formidable array of talent on offer and that festival goers will have the choice of two simultaneous performances in the Wests’ Starlight Room and marble bar as well as three jazz piano sessions in the Piano Lounge. “The diversity of the music available for patrons includes trad and mainstream jazz big bands, swing, some blues, jazz pianists and two jazz orchestras,” she said. “Two dance floors will cater to those who like to move to the music.”

Chris also intends to create an outdoor space and external entry, while also obtaining a liquor licence so the café can be open for dinner almost every night of the week. “There’s bigger plans for the future,” Chris said, “In the future customers will be able to come in and have that glass of wine or beer with their meals”. Café Deore is located at Shop 23, Lake Macquarie Fair – 46 Wilsons Road, Mount Hutton. Phone 4948 4743.

Last week didn’t encourage lawn lovers to begin fertilising their much cared-for grass. Pre-spring days often spur lawn lovers into premature action - but wait, don’t fertilise yet. A warm day or two doesn’t mean an actively growing lawn, and fertilising until the lawn is being mowed is only wasting money and effort. The pre-spring job which should be done now is the elimination of weeds before top dressing or fertilising. An excellent product to use to eliminate broad leaf weeds is Kleen Lawn, but note this product cannot be sprayed onto Buffalo. Bindie is safe for all grasses, including Buffalo and it will kill bindiis and many other weeds as well. Carefully read the instructions on any product as you may find the choices are many. Once the lawn is growing, being mown and weeds eliminated, it’s time to apply lawn top dressing which should never be too thick - the grass should be visible.

• Feed citrus with poultry manure, out under the drip line away from the trunk - then three weeks later apply citrus food. • Potted citrus should only be fertilised with a slow release such as Bounceback or Martins Organic Advance Plus. Never use citrus food as the plant may defoliate. • Sasanqua camellias that have finished flowering, can be trimmed, fertilised and peat moss applied over the root’s surface.

Auctions a win-win

D

eciding to sell your home by auction is often a win-win for sellers and buyers alike. Sellers often enjoy the streamlined marketing process, with fixed open home times and an end sell date in mind. Selling at auction also gives agents three opportunities to sell your home – prior to auction, on auction day or straight after the auction. Buyers can warm to the fact that they are in a completely open and transparent marketplace; to buy the home on the day all they have to do is outbid whoever is there in the moment with them. A good example of a recent successful auction campaign was McGrath Newcastle’s listing at 82 Rembrandt Drive, Merewether Heights. The listing agent Simon Wall took the three-bedroom, three-bathroom home to market with a price range of $630,000 to $690,000, with open homes running every Saturday up until the auction date. On auction day we had eight registered bidders turn up, with three parties going head-to-head. After a few bids back and

PICK OF THE WEEK The Glimmer Man Friday, NBN, 10.10pm, MA15+ (1996) Playing a ponytailed ex-CIA assassin-turnedBuddhist detective on the case of a serial killer, it’s obvious action man Steven Seagal had well and truly lost it. He even went out of his way to up the laugh quotient by adding music contributions to the soundtrack. Good to see he takes it all in his stride, but the stiff-bodied man of action was well out of Under Siege territory here. For diehards only.

Gone Girl

Apocalypto Sunday, SBS, 8.30pm, MA15+ (2006) Set in the dying days of the Mayan civilisation in the 16th-century, warrior Jaguar Paw (Rudy Youngblood) jumps ship seconds before being slain in a mass human sacrifice, slingshotting himself on a frantic jungle chase. Brutal and blood-thirsty, bizarre and beautiful, but above all brilliant, director Mel Gibson sustains a relentlessly riveting film through sheer power of will and conviction.

Wednesday, TEN, 9pm, MA15+ (2014) This dark, intelligent and stylish creation from director David Fincher plays on his strengths while bringing the best out of big-name stars Ben Affleck (right) and Rosamund Pike. Based on the global bestseller by Gillian Flynn, it unearths the secrets at the heart of a modern marriage when, on his fifth wedding anniversary, Nick Dunne (Affleck) reports that his beautiful wife, Amy (Pike), has gone missing. Under pressure from the police and a growing media frenzy, Nick’s portrait of a blissful union begins to crumble and he soon becomes the prime suspect.

CAPRICORN: DEC 22 - JAN 20

The Full Moon on the 18th indicates you’re going to being feeling somewhat vulnerable and may be happier keeping a low profile attending to work behind the scenes while you fine-tune plans for the future. Don't be too aggressive with your responses if you are on shaky ground.

The 18 August Full Moon indicates your reserves of energy are rather low and you might be feeling a little worn out. Take some time to relax before you make yourself ill, even if it’s only possible to get a couple of hours rest and an early night.

The 18 August Full Moon indicates that you need to get yourself into better shape to face the challenges that await you. A few early nights, a better diet and a readiness to give up bad habits will work wonders. Be more sensible and set yourself a practical schedule.

The Full Moon on the 18th indicates

SCORPIO: OCT 24 - NOV 22

AQUARIUS: JAN 21 - FEB 19

The Full Moon on the 18th indicates that if you have to deal with awkward, demanding children or even adults who insist on acting like children, you will be able to resolve the most troubling of situations through empathy and by not over-reacting.

The Full Moon on 18 August

SAGITTARIUS: NOV 23 - DEC 21

PISCES: FEB 20 - MAR 20

The Full Moon on 18 August is a fairly mixed up time emotionally and you could be feeling somewhat vulnerable. There may also be suspicions of a friend’s motives but don't do anything about it until you have proof. Defining what matters most will guide you.

The Full Moon on the 18th warns you

TAURUS: APR 21 - MAY 21 The 18 August Full Moon indicates you’re going to be grappling with a rather crowded diary and overly full schedule, so be careful of making mistakes when handling paperwork or other important projects. There is only one of you, so do your best to avoid rushing about.

GEMINI: MAY 22 - JUNE 21 The Full Moon on 18 August indicates that too much interference from others at work will only result in you losing your temper. Put up a ‘Do Not Disturb’ sign – you’ll feel better for a little solitude. There may be a sudden and unexpected trip this month.

LEO: JUL 23 - AUG 23 The Full Moon on the 18th indicates that unexpected expenses are likely. You would like nothing better than a riotous night out, but if your bank balance won’t stand it, you’ll have to be more economical. Soothing inner tensions will help you harness your personal power.

VIRGO: AUG 24 - SEPT 23 The Full Moon on 18 August indicates that relations with a child, teenager or friend may be strained. The more you try to organise them, the worse the situation will become. They are looking for encouragement and solutions, rather than criticism, however constructive it is.

HINTERLAND SEASON 2 DVD GIVEAWAY

Newcastle Weekly has eight copies of Hinterland Season 2 on DVD to give away.

TREE SERVICES

• Small, medium & large jobs • Prompt service

ABN 14 057 337 309 • Electrical Contractors Licence 136105C

Aberystwyth’s panoramic vistas hide a multitude of sins and it is DCI Tom Mathias’ (Richard Harrington) job to investigate and hunt down the perpetrators of crimes that jeopardise the safety and security of the local community. Throughout the second season of Hinterland, Mathias is drawn into a world of killers and their victims. Atmospheric and disturbing, this is a detective drama of poetry and scale, a story of blood, soil and belonging. The first series of Hinterland reached its bloody climax with DCI Tom Mathias’ future hanging in the balance.
