This week... From the editor What an incredibly creative region we have in the Hunter! I’m in awe of the talents of young Merewether artists Nicola de Jong and Mia Stamenkovski, whose HSC works will be part of this year’s travelling ARTEXPRESS exhibition, to visit Maitland in spring (See them on page 4). While Nicola’s work might be described as cosmic, Mia’s is truly haunting, as she depicts the loss of her grandfather to Alzheimer’s disease in The Long Goodbye. What a struggle hers and so many families face with this dreaded disease. Our family, too, is watching a loved one retreat, and as painful as it is for us, we can’t even imagine how frightening it is for her. Mind you, there does seem to be some jollity in the senior years, if the activities of Tinonee Gardens multicultural village, Waratah, are a guide. Read how they’ve become calendar girls (and boys) to raise funds and have a bit of a laugh on page 8. Good on CEO Sue Fardy and photographer Von Mullane for bringing Tinonee Stars 2016 to life. I’m hoping I have half the style and sass of the Hepburn-esque Maria Monferini when I get to that stage of life. Have a great week. And in memory of David Bowie: let’s dance. - Alysson Watson

This photo shoot may have been in Jamala Wildlife Lodge, National Zoo and Aquarium, Canberra, but the girl is a regular in Newcastle. Tayah Mott, 19, and her 14-year-old brother Jaiden, 14, visit their father, RAAF Squadron Leader Gary Mott, in Adamstown, every school holidays. The aspiring model and hospitality worker, who studies remedial massage and plans to enrol in a bachelor of sports management, says she loves how close her father’s home in Adamstown is to shops and beaches. “Newcastle’s a great getaway from Canberra,” Tayah said. “Five minutes to the beach. We love it!” Tayah wears: Heaven crop zip fashvest $129, Solar Bare, bottoms available for preorder enquiries@ solarbare.com.au
