Differences Between BS4 and BS6 Engine: Explained Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) is an Indian institution that’s responsible for setting up regulations for emissions by vehicles. In India, the standard of emission is known as the Bharat Stage Emission Standards. Every vehicle has to meet the standards set in this standard to keep the pollution under control.

Every few years, the situation is assessed and changes are accordingly made in the BS standards. Two of these standards are BS4 and BS6.

Let’s take a look at them:

BS4 Bharat Stage 4, or BS4, was the emission norms introduced by the CPCB in 2017. The engines in all vehicles launched after the introduction of these norms were BS4-compliant. This meant that sulphur content released by an engine could not be more than 50 parts per million. If the sulphur content was more, it was to be considered a pollution engine and discontinued. Every vehicle in India had to comply with the BS4 standards.

BS6 On April 1, 2020, the CPCB introduced the sixth iteration of the Bharat Stage Emission Standards known as BS6. This is an upgrade over BS4.

All cars manufactured later than April 1, 2020, have to meet the BS6 standards. BS6 standards were introduced keeping in mind the increasing pollution. BS4 standards are now old and not as effective.

A BS6-compliant engine requires fuel whose sulphur traces is the fifth of what was required in a BS4-compliant engine. Further, the Nitrogen Oxide (NOx) levels by the new engine are 70% lower in diesel engines and 25% lower in petrol engines.

The benefits of BS6 engines are that their pollution emission is considerably less and they are more environment-friendly.
