Nearly seven months ago, I began this exciting journey as editor of Newburgh Magazine. I came on board so inspired by the people and businesses we covered. My goal is to continue the hyper-local focus of our content while revealing new themes and with the help of my creative director, Maegan Saalwaechter, give the publication a brand new vogue and identity.

‘PASSPORT TO HEALTH’ NEWBURGH FARMERS MARKET OFFERS FARM
FRESH PRODUCE AND FAMILY ACTIVITIES WRITER: CAROL SCHAEFER Farmers Markets are a popular trend across the United States, though the Newburgh Farmers Market continues to flourish nine years later. The “Farm to Table” movement reinvents how customers buy groceries taking market visitors back in time. In the mid-1800s, grocery stores were small and quaint focusing on “dr y grocer y” items, canned goods and other non-perishable staples. Butchers and greengrocers (produce stores) were separate businesses. Many people just bought their food from a local farmer. In 1916, the Memphis, Tennessee based store Piggly Wiggly began to flourish, and is credited with introducing the concept of self-service shopping.

Today, big box stores continue to do considerable amounts of business. However, many consumers are taking notice in the ingredients in their products and where food is grown. The Newburgh Farmers Market is growing and really is more of a happening than just a market. Families and friends make a morning out of tr ying new produce — eightball squash, yellowish ground cherries, tomatillos and leeks are amongst the brightly colored items to see. There are always seasonal offerings like corn, tomatoes, cucumbers and lettuce. The Newburgh Farmers Market also supplies pasture-raised meats, baked goods, fresh pressed juices, jewelr y, handwoven rugs, herbs and
breakfast foods. After 9 a.m., live music fills the air complementing the mighty Ohio River. Ever y week there are different events rolled into the market event, including cooking demonstrations by Chef Adam Edwards. He highlights produce and meat from the market, shares his recipes and offers samples of the completed dish. The POP Club tent of fers “Passpor t to Health” sign ups, to get started with weekly activities. Kids can become part of the “two bite club” and other value creating activities based on food, nutrition and food growing — some of the activities include seed planting and making salads, jams, smoothies, worm bins and a food scavenger hunt. The 2019 Market is located at the Old Lock and Dam Park every Saturday morning from 8 a.m. to noon until mid-September. CHEF ADAM EDWARDS CONTINUES CUISINE TRADITIONS While there may be secret recipes up his sleeve, Chef Adam Edwards is not shy about loving his cooking craft, his spirit is an obvious trait upon meeting him for the first time. Edwards comes from a family of chefs — both his father and his grandfather were recognizable names in Evansville. Following his formal training (he grew up cooking), he returned to the area taking a sous chef position at the Petroleum Club. Previously in his career he worked in sales for Sysco Foods and has also led to positions like executive chef at Owensboro Health Regional Hospital and at St. Mary’s Medical Center. Though, his world blended when kids came into the picture. Today, the private chef has a wife, two kids, and a schedule filled with soccer and gymnastic events. His family-focused life is courtesy of building his own business. His personal venture began when he started showing friends how to cook healthier and more delicious foods. Edwards says his teaching is more about technique than recipes, which he freely offers. His goal is for his clients to understand the food science behind the recipes so they can learn to substitute and even successfully interchange ingredients. He found that many people enjoyed the lessons, but felt that they did not have time or the inclination to cook meals. The business took an unexpected pivot toward the event business and meal prep services for both individuals and families. “I talk to people about their food goals,” Chef Edwards said. “Are they needing a low carbohydrate menu or are they concentrating on lean proteins and adding more vegetables to their diet.” Once he learns more about a client’s needs, he builds menus reflecting those preferences. Edwards visits the grocery store for supplies and then cooks in clients’ homes. Customers are able to eat the prepared meals immediately or place items in the refrigerator to heat up at a later time. While the profession “private chef” often comes with the mental noise of “cha-ching,” the service is more affordable than one might expect to pay. A frozen dinner, for instance, may cost $5 or more consisting of loaded ingredients. Edwards says that while a typical meal-out costs between $8-20 per person, his meals cost an average of $12 per person, and are created with fresh, wholesome ingredients. WRITER: MARISA PATWA From the dazzling Fourth of July fireworks show on the Ohio riverfront to spooky Ghost Walks throughout the town on Halloween, and the lighting of the town tree with the annual choir concert from the Castle High School Knight Sensations around Christmas, there is plenty to do in Newburgh. Though, the holidays are not the only time that people come out to celebrate. Newburgh folks enjoy various forms of enter tainment, from the Free Family Movie nights at Lou Dennis Park, to bowling and laser tag at the Showplace Cinemas Newburgh Family Entertainment Center to participating in sidewalk chalk and pie-making contests or doing yoga on the river at the Newburgh Farmers Market. There are also races held in Newburgh throughout the year to celebrate causes such as Relay for Life of Warrick County in March to the Warrick County Young Life Sunshine in Motion 5K Fun Run in May. The two libraries in Newburgh also host special events for children like puppet shows and magicians. While the Newburgh Community Theater and The Foundr y Center for the Ar ts also hold several plays throughout the year, providing theatrical talent to the town. Leading into summer, the Wine, Art and Jazz Fest takes place in May, the Chocolate Walk is in June and with the Fiddler Fest is in August, there is no need to go on a vacation when so many events are happening right here in Newburgh. Newburgh Inc. Event Coordinator Amber Kelly says a main goal as an official Main Street organization is to get people in the community into the downtown area. “[…] the next time they want to go out to eat they might go into that restaurant or shop they saw when they were downtown for an HNI event,” Kelly said. A new downtown event includes public viewings, most recently of the men and women’s world cup games. “Last June, I was on vacation sitting on a park bench in Toronto watching a soccer game and I said to my husband, ‘Why don’t we do this in Newburgh?’ […] And it came together in two weeks.” Although Kelly’s position is technically part-time, she has big dreams for HNI and the town of Newburgh in the future. “We talk all the time about things we want to do and I even have an entire book of ideas,” she said. “I have little dreams like, ‘Oh, let’s get some big Connect Four out to play.’ And then I have big dreams. My biggest dream is an urban beach. I would love to do an urban beach on the riverfront. We have room for a lot of growth in Newburgh.”
NEWBURGH WINE FEST This event is held annually on the third weekend of May. You will find nonstop Jazz music, wine by the glass or you can buy the bottle to take home, food served all day and evening, art for sale, wine education classes and a view of the Ohio River that just can’t be beat. HISTORIC NEWBURGH INC., WINERY TOUR For the wine tour of your dreams, check out this annual event on Aug. 17. There will be stops to four wineries, with opportunities for shopping and wine tasting. FIREWORKS & EVENING IN THE PARK This event was rescheduled from July 5, which was canceled due to inclement weather. The event takes place from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 31 at the Old Lock and Dam Park on the riverfront. NEWBURGH FIDDLER FEST This annual festival takes place from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 24 and noon to 8 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 25 at the Old Lock and Dam Park. Fiddler Fest features deep fried catfish, a beer garden and live bands. PARTY IN PARADISE This second annual Warrick Trails fundraiser will take place from 5 to 10 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 28 at Friedman Park, located at 2700 Park Blvd, Newburgh. NEWBURGH CIVITAN ZOMBIE FARM The 46th annual Newburgh Civitan Zombie Farm is opening the weekend of Sept. 27 and will be open every Thursday through Sunday in October and will run until the second weekend in November. WRITER: MARISA PATWA Newburgh is uniquely located with two major hospitals in the area, including Deaconess and St. Vincent providing a plethora of care to those living and or working in “The Burgh.” The Warrick County School Corporation system even severed their contract with their former health care provider Quadmedical a few years ago to forge a strong partnership with Deaconess, which takes care of the health care needs of all of the school corporations employees and staff, including the public schools in Newburgh. This July, the highly anticipated $95 million St. Vincent Or thopaedic Hospital opened up Newburgh right next door to the St. Vincent Epworth Crossing Breast Center, across the street from Oncology Hematology Associates and just a swift hop over the Lloyd to the Deaconess Gateway Hospital campus. “So we have great ser vices all right here,” St. Vincent President of Operations John Greaney said. “We are always looking to partner with great physicians and the radiation oncologists and medical oncologists at HOA are just phenomenal,” he said. “And they fit well with our mission, our vision and our values and they are just excellent clinicians.” The $37 million Encompass Health Deaconess Rehabilitation Hospital, which will be located at 9355 Warrick Wellness Trail in Newburgh, is set to open on Oct. 10. The in-patient hospital has plans to feature a large therapy gym, courtyard, in-house pharmacy, dining room, 80-private patient rooms and advanced technologies. “[The hospital] will be a place of healing and hope for many many people in our community,” CEO of Encompass Health Deaconess Rehabilitation Hospital Blake Bunner said. “There is a lot of expectation of growth as the population ages,” Greaney said. “We are excited to be at this location in Epworth. It’s a great location for services in Warrick County.”

home a place where I found
WRITER: JULIE ROSENBAUM-ENGELHARDT Newburgh means different things to me. I lived in New York all my life except for two years in Connecticut, only an hour away. When my husband was offered a job in Evansville, the deal was great deal so we figured we would try this new place. I was frightened at first because it seemed like there was nothing in the area. People got excited when they built Eastland Mall. To me, a mall did not bring euphoria. We settled in Newburgh and with my youngest only seven months old. Being so far from my mom and everything I knew concerned me. I needed to find a doctor, dentist and the right pharmacy. I had to get Michael, now in first grade, registered in school. I was too busy and anxious to care about things to do and see. When I settled in and all was taken care of, I just cried. However, when I read a book by Dr. Wayne Dyer I realized this was my new life and I had to make it work. I made many new friends, found a really great doctor and dentist and found things to do. I remember calling the late Larry Aiken and asking him how to get tickets for a Harry Chapin concert that he was promoting. It all began there. Instead of feeling culturally deprived, I found a new and exciting life. I became involved in theater with the late Jim Jackson at Repertory People, of Evansville, and was given a big part in the play, “Tribute.” The theater people were so eclectic and unique and I still have friends with whom I did plays. I got a writing job for the Warrick paper and still write for Newburgh Magazine every month. I became very at home here and my kids were flourishing. I started inviting friends and family to come visit. The reactions I got were surprising because people from the New York, Boston and Pennsylvania areas and so many other places fell in love with my little town. My mom came and the first day she saw my play and felt that this place was just like Oceanside, New York. However, the next day when she saw people baptized in their back yard swimming pool, she freaked out. When we came in and she saw the late Marcia Yockey doing the weather she asked me if I was ready to come home. You see, there was nobody quite like wacky Marcia on television back home. This was the late 1970s and Newburgh was different. We had no cable, so watching our Mets or Giants or Rangers or Knicks was impossible. I was happy, though. As visitors started coming, our area was growing and I felt like a part of it. My brother-in-law who lived in Boston and taught at University of Massachusetts thought the riverfront was breathtaking and loved our meal at

Edgewater Grille, where we almost felt as if we were on a yacht. He loved all the antiques along Jennings Street and the neighborhoods downtown. My friend Melody, who works with the Cardinals and lives in St. Louis, was so impressed by how quaint our town was. She loved stopping in the shops and she came to USI where I graduated from and loved the campus and the lake. My friends came from upstate New York — Poland, a small town near Utica. They enjoyed the contrast of new subdivisions and the older stately homes downtown. When my parents came when I first moved here, there were hardly any restaurants, but my father loved the Homestead. It hasn’t existed for several years, but I think often of how my Brooklyn-born dad loved the feel of the country cooking and homestyle service. Through the years, several more restaurants became available and if my mom could see it now, it might really seem like Oceanside, New York. I had many friends over for my graduation party and the guests from all over and the people from Newburgh all enjoyed one another. We had professors from USI and my theater friends and people with who we worked. It was wonderful and I was so at home here. Moving here was a big step for me, and living in the same area for 30 years has made me not want to leave. I took a leap of faith and it turned out so right. After attending Castle High School, my kids went on to college and then to successful careers. My son Michael loves the town so much that he came here to make a movie, “Back in the Day.” It was showcased at Newburgh Cinema and boy, did our town look beautiful onscreen. The people who came here from LA to film really liked the ambience and many locals got a chance to see themselves in the movie. “Back In The Day,” made right here with Hollywood stars including Morena Baccarin (of HBO’s “Homeland”) was the best way to show that this will always be his home, no matter where he lives. He even wishes he could have Pizza King strombolis somehow shipped to him in LA. Now, we have Deaconess Gateway Hospital, a huge state of the art facility affiliated with MD Anderson Cancer Network. We have a movie theater with a restaurant and bowling alley. We have stores and shops opening up constantly. Newburgh has it all and I am so thankful that I decided to come and stay. Many people who had moved here in the 70s chose to move back. However, I owed it to my family to make it work — and it worked.
