NBSPI offers Blended Learning for SHS, College As part of its response plans to the challenges of delivering quality Education in the new normal, the New Brighton School of the Philippines, Inc. (NBSPI) recalibrated its instructional methodologies to accommodate Blended Learning Modalities during the opening of classes for the First Semester of Academic Year 202021. After conducting a series of surveys to assess learner needs and capabilities, the administrators and teaching personnel prepared viable strategies and instructional materials to ensure that as much as possible, all enrollees are accorded educational opportunities—meaning, no Brightonian is “left behind.”

Across Senior High School strands and College courses offered by the school, orientation and consultation activities were conducted to disseminate information and introduce learners, parents, guardians, and various stakeholders to the new policies and approaches that are designed to ensure safety without compromising quality of learning. Some of the features of the Blended modality offered by NBSPI include online classes conducted via Google Meet, teacher consultations via chat tools, tests and related assessments conducted in a secure Learning Management System (LMS) called Moodle, and special modular learning through printed course packs for students with limited resources and for those who are

Araw ng Tanglaw gives back to community NBSPI Students, Parents raise funds for children In the spirit of the holidays and in accordance with its role as a development agent in the community, New Brighton School of the Philippines, Inc. held its annual reach-out activity, this time with a new name that represents its goals: Araw ng Tanglaw.

Weeks leading to the culminating activity on December 17, 2020, the members of the NBSPI community mobilized themselves to raise funds for their chosen recipient: the children of Obed’s House Ministries at Lanton, Apopong.

Students of NBSPI, together with their parents, worked together to prepare donations. Through their initiative and efforts of ticket sales, enough funds were raised to buy ten sacks of rice; nine of which were donated to the Home for underprivileged children, and one served as the major prize for a special raffle. A Facebook Live virtual program, organized by the NBSPI personnel and the Supreme Student Council (SSC), served as the culmination of the altruistic initiative. Student groups rendered songs, dances, and various musical performances as their entertainment and inspirational offerings to family, friends, frontliners, and

everyone who are struggling because of the pandemic. Christmas carols interspersed with messages of encouragement were presented by various strands of the Senior High School department, College student groups such as student-employees of KCC Gensan and KCC Marbel, scholars, and PE class-groups.

Araw ng Tanglaw was conceived to be a program for NBSPI to give back to the community. In the previous year, there was also a concerted effort to extend help to the marginalized and it became apparent that this benevolent gesture should be a regular endeavor that complements the institution’s consistent mission of empowering the often overlooked members of society. “Tanglaw” captures the Brightonian charge of bringing light to gloomy spaces. With its launching, “Araw ng Tanglaw” becomes the official outreach program of NBSPI and will be held annually with the main goal of reaching out to those in need.

This year, Obed’s House Ministries was the “adopted family.” Students chose to help the children in the foster home. In a video explaining the ministry’s mission, Meredith Docena, founder and executive director,

reveals that their goal is to fulfill the great commission by providing a loving family atmosphere for neglected children. Obed’s House is a 24/7 residential care facility for children coming from neglect, abuse, and orphan situations. She says, “The past of the children does not define their future” and so, they are to be given purposeful help for their future and their success. It is hoped that the NBSPI students’ initiative will inspire others to go beyond individualistic tendencies and work for worthy causes that alleviate unfortunate conditions of their kababayans.

Alinsunod sa itinakda ng Pampanguluhang Proklamasyon Bilang 1041 s. 1997 na nagpapahayag ng taunang Buwan ng Wikang Pambansa tuwing Agosto sa pangunguna ng Komisyon sa Wikang Filipino (KWF), nakiisa ang New Brighton School of the Philippines, Inc., sa selebrasyon na idinaos sa pagdiriwang virtual. Gamit ang mga makabagong teknolohiya sa kasalukuyan ay matagumpay na naidaos ang programa. Sinimulan ito ng isang webinar tampok ang panauhing inanyayahan upang magbahagi ng kanyang kaalaman.

O.K. sa Brighton goes live The first month of the semester was abuzz with online activities that kept everyone busy: registrations, surveys, orientations, and many other academic concerns that vied for students’ attention. Enter the two-part online series that served as an interlude to the frenzy of the opening of classes: NBSPI’s “Online Kwentuhan,” aka “OK sa Brighton!”

The first act went live on the NBSPI Facebook page on August 7, 2020 and was followed by another broadcast on August 10, 2020. Open for public viewing and interaction, the funfilled events were viewed and participated in

Virtual Acquaintance Party connects students

The KPop-themed NBSPI Acquaintance Party held on October 27, 2020 was a resounding success, thanks to the overwhelming participation of students and personnel from the Senior High School and College levels. This is the first virtual acquaintance party held under “new normal” circumstances. A pun of the Korean greeting and a popular Filipino, expression, “Annyeong Konek,” the name of the event, was a hit among Brightonians.

Participants were divided into groups and were given names inspired by Korean entertainment agencies: Big Hit, SM, JYP and YG. NBSPI personnel and student leaders facilitated virtual games that brought out everybody’s competitive spirit. Popular KPop songs kept the energy up and Fun games like Flip the Water Bottle, Face the Cookie, KPop

Random Dance Play, Multiplication Battle, Kai Bai Bo (Rock-Paper-Scissors) and Aegyo Battle brought hilarious moments and paved the way for Brightonians to get acquainted with their schoolmates. Contests like Face shield Design, Spoken Word, Poster-Slogan Making, Tiktok Challenge, and VLog at Home were also sources of information and amusement for the viewers. There were also amusing instances when viewers thought actual KPop Stars made cameos in the program.

Given logistical limitations because of the pandemic, technology played a big role in the planning and execution of the event.

Broadcasted via Facebook Live and made possible with Google Meet rooms, Facebook Messenger chat groups and pages, the

virtual spaces made up for what was usually a physical activity aimed at fostering camaraderie among students.

By the end of the program, a lot of finger hearts were given and contact information were exchanged. There were definitely many new social media profiles visited by students who ventured to interact with other Brightonians outside their immediate social circles, particularly with New Brighton students from Koronadal City (those in the KMM group).

NBSPI personnel also took part in the events and facilitated the raffles. Bonus prizes were also given in Trivia games. The organizers are thankful to everyone involved for making the event a huge success.

DevCom student wins Mindanao-wide Essay Contest A vision of the widespread utilization of renewable energy propelled the winning essay of Loigie Sewo Onda, a 20 year-old Development Communication (DevCom) student of NBSPI in a competition sponsored

by Greenergy Solar. Onda’s essay, “Kneng,” shared the competition grand prize title with “Meet Her at the End of the Road,” a submission

by Elaija Sebarios, an Accounting student from Ozamis City. Each received a cash prize of P5,000 and a solar-powered lamp. The contest, open to Mindanao-based students aged 15-23 years old, invited participants to write compositions with the expressed topic of “Our Clean Energy Future: What does it look like in Mindanao?” The announcement of winners was held on November 16, 2020 and was one of the highlights of Greenergy Solar’s celebration of Solar Week 2020.

Besting entries from various schools and universities in Mindanao, Onda’s essay draws upon his experiences growing up: having to struggle with limited energy sources while in pursuit of education. As a second year DevCom major, the framework of sustainable development is also evident in his winning composition. The title of his work “Kneng,” is the Blaan word for “light.” Onda, an active student leader whose advocacies include cultural empowerment and seeking educational opportunities for members of his community in Sinawal, uses the word as a metaphor for his goals in life and his vision of lighting up Mindanao. Sharing this vision, NBSPI has continued to provide educational assistance and special learning arrangements with SHS and College students in Sinawal. EGN

Brighton Voices join Banggianay 2020

NBSPI’s debate team earns SocMed support NBSPI’s Brighton Voices, a debate team composed of Grade 11 Senior High School students, participated in Banggianay 2020, a provincial-wide Asian Parliamentary Debate Cup organized by the Young Educators’ Convergence of SOCCSKSARGEN, Inc. (YECS) in partnership with Radyo Milenyo 100.9 MHz. In a match held on December 5, 2020 against debaters of Holy Trinity College, the Brighton Voices spoke as the government side for the motion “This House Postpones National and Local Elections in 2022.” Allysa Mae Virgo, the prime minister, Zoren Gabutan, the deputy prime minister, and Joshua Rañeses, the government whip presented their cases aided by thorough research made in coordination with King Alner Cortez, the team alternate and researcher.

With the full support of the NBSPI community and encouragement of their supporters, the team led the tally of social media votes despite not advancing to the next debate round.

Thankful for the virtual

support that roused confidence in their match, the team hopes to inspire fellow NBSPI students to be informed and strive to support advocacies that empower the marginalized. This manifests in their team’s slogan and battle cry: “Voicing out the voices of the voiceless.”

Banggianay’s debate matches were aired simultaneously in Facebook and Radyo Milenyo, reaching the participating municipalities of South Cotabato, Koronadal City, and General Santos City as part of the organization’s campaign to increase students’ socio-civic awareness in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic.

With the goal of educating students and personnel regarding the increasing incidences of online crimes in the country, NBSPI conducted an Anti-Cybercrime Webinar on October 22, 2020. Police Major Leo S. Dofiles of the Anti-Cybercrime Unit of General Santos City was invited as resource speaker. Major Dofiles shared his expertise on various online crimes, their equivalent penalty, and how to avoid becoming victims of prevalent online scams. He also identified proper channels and venues to solve such crimes. Seminar attendees were provided with emergency hotline of the local AntiCybercrime headquarters.

With the pandemic changing our social and educational landscape, digital forms of

deception are often overlooked. It is of great importance that educators and learners be informed of the appropriate and safe use of social media. The webinar provided an avenue to raise awareness on the crimes committed on online platforms: identity theft, invasion of privacy, fraud (e.g. those involving “phishing” or stealing user data and credentials such as ATM/bank details), piracy, counterfeiting, and various types of hacking, to name some. The NBSPI Discipline Officer, Ms. Marianie S. Lara, one of the organizers of the Webinar continues to advocate for increased vigilance. “Awareness is key. Students should be conscious of the information they provide on the Internet and avoid deceitful activities,” continued on Page 6

Literacy Month fosters love for reading

The NBSPI Library offers “Ask a Librarian” services to students.

One with the nation in celebrating Literacy month, NBSPI recognizes the need to promote and support efforts that foster literacy. A time to honor the role of libraries, librarians, and library workers in transforming lives of library patrons and nourishing the love for reading, November 2020 was an opportunity for NBSPI Library to give tribute to authors, editors, publishers, and stakeholders in the publishing industry and other independent individuals and organizations who are sources of books we read.

Ms. Crescent Jayne De Guzman, NBSPI Librarian, continues to provide library services to NBSPI library patrons via virtual means. “While many libraries have temporarily closed due to the continuing public health crisis, a librarian still makes a way to provide information resources by exploring alternative means,” De Guzman says during a library orientation for the students and

personnel. Currently, there are thousands of books in the library collection to complement course offerings. Steps to procure thousands more from local and international sources have also been undertaken. While the health crisis limits physical engagement with the institution’s collection, the NBSPI Library has subscriptions to various digital platforms that provide digital reading resources. These include Magzter, the world’s largest digital newsstand that is accessible on many platforms, most conveniently on mobile devices. Through this, NBSPI students can access 12,000+ magazines from over 3,000 publishers worldwide in the comfort of their homes.

Recommending increased browsing and access to databases like Magzter motivated the launch of the NBSPI Library Month. A series of virtual events and contests provided the means to disseminate information and kindle excitement among the student population. Contests such as Design-yourown-book-cover and Essay writing were organized and became avenues for bridging love of books, reading, writing, and art.

Students who won in the contests received prizes in the form of books and school supplies. Some are determined to join again in future library contests and declared that they will continue to read for research, leisure, and intellectual nourishment even when the pandemic has kept them from their favorite campus study-tambayan: the library. NBSPI SHS student leader is recipient of International Scholarship

Cristian Louis Romeo, a Grade 12 student of NBSPI under the Humanities and Social Sciences (HUMSS) strand, received a scholarship from Adhipati Education Group, one of the largest Non-Governmental Organizations in Myanmar.

Romeo, an active student leader who works with various youth organizations and advocacy groups, received the news in December 2020. The organization recognizes the recipient’s potential and leadership skills as these align with their goals of fostering 21st century skills and lifestyle competency in communications, critical thinking and career empowerment in order for the youth and educators across Myanmar and some ASEAN countries to be prepared for professional and scholarly ventures. The organization keenly takes part in education reform by means of sharing “contextualized teaching practices developed by youth conforming with the desires of the community” in local and international conferences of education or through delivering teaching workshops in collaboration with other educational enterprises. (from their FB page and Youthop.com) Romeo’s participation in local, national, and international organizations leads to various recognition and also opens doors of opportunities like this international scholarship. Aside from being a part of the International Youth Exchange program of the Philippines and Myanmar, he also shares his time, resources, and skills to Global Peace Chain (as director and Philippine representative), the General Santos City Youth Development Council (as Global Mobility chairperson), One Mindanao Youth Parliament (as GenSan representative), Southeast Asia Young Peacebuilders Organization (as Executive Board member), and Bantay Bayan (as Region 12 director).

‘Trailblazers’ Webinar Series promotes mental health

Trailblazers Talk Episode 2. Miss Tatel shares narratives of inspiration and leads the Coffee Buzz Student-Guests in raising their mugs as an act of solidarity to overcome struggles during this pandemic.

There is a general consensus that the pandemic has a great impact on people’s mental health. Concerned for the well-being of the students, the NBSPI’s Guidance and Testing Office has constantly reached out and helped them cope up with their life and academic struggles.

While the new normal presents difficulties in counselling, various initiatives can address the goals of providing support. On November 5, 2020, Trailblazers’ Talk: Overcoming Adversity to Reach Your Personal Best was held and became the launching program for a webinar series. The guest speaker was Ms. Erlina Michelle “Mimi” Tatel, who discussed frameworks for taking care of one’s mental health. She talked about her personal experiences in overcoming problems in order to achieve the best version of herself at present. She also shared different tips on how to handle stressful situations. NBSPI students who participated in the webinar were given tips on how to organize tasks, take well-

deserved naps, and other viable ways to adjust and achieve stability.

Taking off from Ms. Tatel’s experiences, part two of Trailblazers’ Talk, Coffee Buzz: Coffee, Conversation and Connect streamed on December 10, 2020. This time, students from various schools in General Santos City were invited as guests.

Facilitated by Ms. Tatel, the discussion revolved around stories of struggles and triumphs. The invited speakers narrated how they overcome negative experiences during the pandemic. Relatable and inspiring, the content of their narratives could be a source of inspiration for the participants of the webinar series who, like them, are in the process of adjusting to the new normal of learning.

The NBSPI Guidance Office, through the webinar series, aims to inspire hope among the learners from all walks of life – that we could rise above difficulties and the huge step of progress that we can make is to give attention, not only to our physical health but also to our mental health. The school provides students with their own GSuite account. Using a personalized e-mail (e.g. Juandelacruz@newbrighton. edu.ph), they are connected to an internal network that allows them to readily contact their teachers via e-mail, watch recorded videos that are shared via a Google Drive with unlimited storage, and keep their files on that cloud storage. They are also provided unique usernames and passwords to access their Learning Management System (LMS).

Despite the tight security of these digital platforms, students are still advised to exercise caution in their use of log in details.

An Update on Scholarship offerings

Scholarships offer aid to students Filipino parents value education as one of the most important legacies they can impart to their children. They believe that having a degree opens opportunities that would ensure a good future and eventually lift them out of poverty. However, with a poor family’s severely limited resources, education tends to be less prioritized over more basic needs such as food and shelter.

In order to help and to encourage those students to pursue their dreams, New Brighton School of the Philippines, Inc. offers scholarship grants for those who wish to enroll, but are struggling financially. These include academic scholarships; student assistance for working students; and various government and privately-funded scholarship grants. NBSPI helps students by providing necessary assistance and information.

A privately-funded scholarship program that fills the gaps in educational access is initiated by KCC Foundation Inc. (KCCFI).

This scholarship is open to incoming college students who are interested to study at NBSPI and take up courses approved by the Scholarship Committee. Applicants must be a senior high school graduate or college level with a Weighted General Average of not lower than 2.5 or its equivalent to 80% as evidenced

by a certified true copy of the report of grades from the Principal’s or Registrar's Office of their last year of schooling and with no failing grade or a grade below 80% in subjects related to their chosen course. Recipients of the scholarship receive full tuition assistance with a monthly allowance.

The Student-Employee Program is another initiative that opens opportunities for those who desire to study while working. This is currently available for campus working students, KCC Employees who are based in General Santos and Koronadal. Work and study arrangements are made in order to find a sustainable balance between academic pursuits and earning an income.

Government-funded scholarship programs include the Commission on Higher Education’s (CHED) Tulong Dunong. The program operates as part of the Student Financial Assistance Programs (StuFAPS) that provides deserving Filipinos with access to quality higher education. Incoming and current students of NBSPI may apply. Student grantees of this assistance are entitled to a maximum of twelve thousand pesos (Php 12,000.00) grant per academic year or six thousand pesos (Php 6,000.00) grant per

NBSPI also hosts the EduKAR scholarship by the Local Government of General Santos

City. EduKAR is a scholarship program of “Alay sa Kabataang Generals Lahat ng Alaga at Talino” or AKLAT, a division under the Office of the City Mayor. The beneficiaries of this scholarship program receive twenty thousand pesos (Php 20,000.00) to cover tuition fees per semester plus a monthly two thousand pesos (Php 2,000.00) allowance.

The semestral evaluation conducted in December 2020 also revealed largely positive feedback from NBSPI students who appreciated the flexibility of the learning modalities offered. For student-employees (working students) who benefited from the combination of LMS-Moodle course packs and the recorded classes on Google Meet, the arrangement gave opportunities for them to strike a balance between their work, home, and school-life.

The previous semester welcomed the first batch of KCC Koronadal-based College student-employees who also found NBSPI’s learning modalities a desired answer to their educational needs. Likewise, scholars and regular students have similar sentiments.

Despite the setbacks brought by the global pandemic, learning continues, provided there are these things in place: careful planning, sustainable methods, and an institutional drive that is geared towards the success and empowerment of its community members. EGN and JL

Student Testimonials regarding NBSPI’s Learning Modalities Isang pagsubok ang pag-aaral noong nakaraang sem dahil hindi face-to-face ang pagdaraos ng mga klase kundi sa virtual na enviroment. Isa sa mga hadlang para sa akin ay ang weak Internet connection.

Sa kabila ng lahat ay patuloy pa rin akong nagpursige na matuto upang makapasa sa bawat subject. Bilang scholar ng paaralan, na-appreciate ko rin ang mga learning modalities. Downloadable ang modules namin sa Moodle at pwede ko rin sagutan ang mga assignments kahit offline. May personalized account kaming mga students kaya may mga features na nakakatulong sa aming pag-aaral, tulad ng pag-view ng recorded classes kung sakaling may disruptions sa connection. Kaya napanatili ko ang scholarship at kasalukuyang lumalaban sa ikalawang taon ng aking pag-aaral sa NBSPI. I encountered different hindrances such as lack of resources and connectivity problems. However, temporary lang pala ‘yun. I got inspiration from my family, classmates, and friends. I am aware of the struggles of my fellow learners, especially when trying to exhaust means to study when there is no stable Wi-Fi available.

I discovered NBSPI’s LMS to be friendly: the minimum requirement is for a smartphone.

Modules are downloadable and can be answered offline. Tumutulong din ang school maghanap ng paraan for students na wala talagang phone. I know some classmates who had their modules printed instead.

As for me, an IS student, virtual learning makes me eager to learn more and to strive harder for me to pass all my subjects. I am also one of the AKLAT/EDUKAR Scholarship recipients. The school administrators and personnel were also instrumental in securing my scholarship. Tinulungan nila ako to process my requirements seeing that I am qualified. Isa rin ito sa nagustuhan ko sa NBSPI. The faculty and personnel are very approachable and helpful. There is a genuine concern for students’ welfare while encouraging us to excel academically.

As an SHS student, I find NBSPI’s learning modalities effective for me to be able to learn despite the situation we are currently experiencing. My school’s new normal type of learning doesn’t deprive us of opportunities for receiving quality instruction. I am still able to actively participate in virtual classes—we still hold a weekly, virtual flag ceremony! My class adviser and subject teachers are constant in monitoring our progress. I appreciate the rules that they have implemented for us students to build our self-discipline and resolve. Also, reliable learning materials and resources are provided online and offline.

Quality education is not sacrificed and this, I think, opens doors for us to reach our desired goals in the near future.

SHAIRA KAYE UTLANG Grade 12 Senior High School - HUMSS At first, I found it tough to balance being a mother, employee and a student. I have to constantly adjust my time to fulfill all tasks required of those roles. Sang umpisa gab-i na gid ako makatulog doing my assignments and these were times when I thought about giving up. But each time I see my children and hear encouraging words from my husband, I become motivated. Totoo nga na you become stronger when you get through hardship. My family motivates me to continue my battle for my dreams – for our dreams.

Now, I have already adjusted. I am lucky I am a regular KCC employee based in Koronadal and this served as a bridge of opportunity to pursue my studies at NBSPI. I appreciate my school because it opened the possibility for me to continue my studies while working. My teachers are also understanding and considerate and I am really learning a lot in my subjects. Bisan budlay ang sitwasyon subong sa kalibutan, waay ako nadulaan sang paglaom.
