Joe Elston enters his sixth season as head coach of Newberry’s softball program. In his 10 year coaching career, Elston has compiled over 200 victories and was recently honored for the accomplishment at the Easton Victory Club Awards Luncheon, which was held at the Marco Island Marriott Beach Resort. Elston was among 36 coaches to receive recognition for their career milestone. Last season, the softball team finished the season with a 30-16 (10-6 South Atlantic Conference) record which was much improved from the 19-25 (3-10 SAC) mark in the year before. The team ended the 2009 campaign ranked tenth in the Southeast Region and boasted several team and individual achievements including two first team allSAC representatives and an honorable mention All-American. Despite the losing record in 2008, Newberry finished ranked nationally in several statistical categories; 15th in double plays per game, 40th in stolen bases per game, 49th in triples per game, 71st in scoring and 78th in batting average. In addition to the team accomplishments, several players found themselves nationally ranked in individual categories. Kat Hammond ranked in RBIs per game (29th), slugging percentage (43rd), batting average (72nd), doubles per game (79th), home runs per game (80th) and on-base percentage (95th). Along with Hammond, Aissa Gatewood ranked 43rd in the nation in stolen bases per game. In 2007, Elston’s team tied the school record for wins in a season, racking up 34 victories. To go along with the 3725-1 record, Courtney Lindler broke the school’s single-season RBI record with 54 and earned All-South Atlantic Region honors from the NFCA and DAKTRONICS, while freshman Sara Powell was a first team All-South Atlantic Conference performer as well as All-South Atlantic Region. In the 2006 season, Newberry posted a 22-34-1 overall and 4-10 in the SAC. However at the 2006 Food Lion SAC Softball Tournament, Newberry compiled a 3-2 record and advanced to the final day of competition before falling to eventual champions, Wingate University. The scarlet and gray garnered several awards in the 2006 season as juniors Courtney Lindler and Christina Kirby were named to the SAC All-Tournament team, while fellow junior Jessica Jackson earned recognition with an All-SAC Second Team selection. Elston’s second season at Newberry produced a win increase of five games as the scarlet and gray went 22-34-1 and acquired several postseason awards as sophomore pitcher and first baseman Christina Kirby was named to the All-SAC First Team as a utility player and junior catcher Sarah Lynch was an All-SAC Second Team member. On the academic spectrum, senior pitcher Kayce McLeod was an ESPN The Magazine All-District III Academic All-Region First Team pick and Newberry led all conference teams in team GPA. “Newberry is a diamond in the rough right now and we’re just starting to get polished,” stated Elston. “This program [softball program] is on the way up. The leadership in this school is instilled in the players and the coaches have instilled that leadership as well. I’m here to turn this program around because I believe in what Newberry College has given us.” Elston came to Newberry via the University of Evansville, where he served as assistant softball coach. While at Evansville, he helped guide the Purple Aces to a 40-20 overall record in 2004. Besides coaching, Elston also coordinated scouting reports, recruiting student-athletes, and fundraising. Prior to his stint at Evansville, Elston was the head coach at Bellarmine University, a Division II institution in Louisville, Ky. From 1999-2003, Elston compiled five straight winning seasons en route to being named the Great Lakes Conference Coach of the Year in 2003. In addition to his accomplishments on the field, his Bellarmine teams also maintained a team GPA of over 3.0. In 1999, he was inducted into the Kentucky Softball Coaches Hall of Fame. Elston has also coached on the high school level, heading the program at DuPont Manual High School in Louisville. While at DuPont Manual, he led his team to a 1997 state championship. He has also been a successful business owner, owning a dry-cleaning service for nearly 20 years. Elston and his wife Suzanne currently reside in Chapin.

Assistant Coach

Newberry, 2002

Jadie Coates enters her first year as the assistant coach of the Newberry College softball team. Coates also serves as the assistant coach of the cross country team and teaches two classes in the Physical Education department. “Coach Coates is ideal for this position because she is young enough to relate with the players but old enough to hold authority over them,” head coach Joe Elston said. “The kids take well to her but she’s still tough. She’s hardnosed.” Coates was a 2002 graduate of Newberry College and was a four-year letter winner for the softball team. Coates played first base for the scarlet and gray from 1998-2002. In her senior year, Coates compiled a .951 fielding percentage while posting a batting average of .230. She also led the team in putouts. After graduation, Coates coached at the high school level as well as for a traveling team called the Palmetto Fusion. In 2008, she became the assistant coach at Southern Wesleyan. She spent one year with the Warriors before returning to Newberry and her alma mater.

2010 SCHEDULE AT A GLANCE

S C H E D U L E

The Newberry College softball team and head coach Joe Elston are pleased to announce the team’s 2010 playing schedule. “We’re playing games early in the year against very tough in-region conferences,” said Elston. “We’re going to have to work harder to prepare and ensure that we’re ready when we need to be. We want to be in mid-season form from day one.” The season starts on February 3, with a home doubleheader against Belmont Abbey. The following day, Newberry will go on the road for two games at Southern Wesleyan. Next, the scarlet and gray open a six-game home stand against Peach Belt Conference opponents, with doubleheaders against USC Aiken, who was ranked 12th nationally last year, Columbus State and Lander.

O U T L O O K

Newberry will then face off against the other in-region conference, the Conference Carolinas. Newberry will play two games at St. Andrews Presbyterian on February 21, before returning home to host Limestone for another doubleheader on February 23. The scarlet and gray will play their next series of games in tournament settings, as they will compete in the Tusculum Tournament on February 27-28 and the Mid South Tournament on March 5-6. “In these two tournaments we will have 15 teams that were either nationally or regionally ranked,” said Elston. “I know they are going to test our team but they are also going to teach us how far we’ve come and what we still need to work on as we prepare for our conference schedule.” Newberry will stay on the road and head to Cleveland, Ga., where the team will face Truett-McConnell on March 9. The scarlet and gray will then immediately depart for Raleigh, N.C., and a doubleheader at Shaw. Newberry returns home for a home doubleheader against Coker on March 14, before playing its first conference doubleheader at Mars Hill on March 20. The scarlet and gray then play at Belmont Abbey in a doubleheader to complete their series season against the Crusaders. Newberry then returns to conference competition with doubleheaders at home against Brevard and at Lincoln Memorial on March 24 and March 27, respectively. Next, Newberry will host Truett-McConnell for a doubleheader in its last non-conference play of the season. The scarlet and gray then alternate home and away SAC doubleheaders with one at Lenoir-Rhyne, at home against Carson-Newman, at Wingate and at home against Tusculum. “We see some of the toughest competitors in the region on our schedule,” said Elston. “Our conference schedule is also very demanding and there isn’t a break anywhere on the schedule.” The Food Lion South Atlantic Conference Tournament will be held from April 22-25 at Wingate. “Even though we play a tough schedule, I have confidence in this team to work hard and persevere through any rough patches that we may encounter and remain competitive deep into the season,” Elston said.
