Brad Edwards Athletic Director Newberry College

Newberry College announced on June 11, 2010, that Dr. V. Scott Koerwer, a senior business school administrator, entrepreneur and authority on leadership and strategy, will become the College’s 21st president, effective July 1. He follows Dr. Mitchell Zais, who has served as Newberry’s president since 2000. The move begins a new era for the College, which has a long tradition of providing educational opportunities for diverse populations of students from around the state and the nation. Newberry is known for the close, personal attention it offers to each of its more than 1,000 undergraduate students. In Dr. Koerwer, the board has selected an entrepreneurial leader who has closely studied the interconnections of professional, business and liberal arts education and has developed innovative academic programs and strategic alliances across university campuses and with universities around the world. Currently Deputy Dean and Clinical Professor of Management at the University of South Carolina’s Moore School of Business, Dr. Koerwer brings a broad range of educational perspectives to the Newberry presidency. He was educated at a leading liberal arts institution, Muhlenberg College and went on to receive his Master’s Degree from a leading science and engineering university, Lehigh University. He was awarded his doctorate in education from the internationally recognized University of

Brad Edwards was introduced as Athletic Director at Newberry College on May 18, 2009. Prior to coming to Newberry, he served as vice president of IMI Resort Holdings, Inc., after five years as associate athletic director at the University of South Carolina. He served as USC’s senior associate athletic director from July 2003 to March 2006. Edwards, who played free safety for the Gamecocks and played in the National Football League for nine seasons, is currently responsible for the recruiting, hiring and training of sales executives and sales directors for IMI’s resort properties across North America, Latin America and the Caribbean. He also assists with the IMI PGA Tour Player program and was responsible for the construction of IMI’s New York City office. In his time at South Carolina, he served as the athletic department’s chief financial officer and was responsible for the day-to-day oversight and management of all business functions. He oversaw the department’s budget, business operations for

Pennsylvania. Dr. Koerwer is also an alumnus of the Advanced Executive Program at the Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University. In addition to the Moore School, he has served as an executive at two leading schools of management: the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania and the Robert Smith School of Business at the University of Maryland. During the course of his 20-year career in business and higher education, Dr. Koerwer has established a notable track record of collaboration and accomplishment at each institution he has served. Most recently at the University of South Carolina’s Moore School of Business, he managed a budget in excess of $50M, and led numerous redesign and development initiatives including the school’s first inclusive, comprehensive strategic planning process. Continuing his record of establishing international partnerships, he forged an alliance with the University of Tikrit in Iraq, laying historic groundwork for building a new education system for the nation as it works to establish a new education and social infrastructure. Dr. Koerwer co-launched three companies including a software company focused on knowledge management and back office operations for higher education clients and a boutique consulting and training firm. Koerwer enjoys spending time with his wife, Christine, and their two daughters, Rachel and Julia.

Williams Brice Stadium, the Colonial Center and Sarge Frye Field, new facility design, development, and construction, all venue concessions and food service, department advertising and multimedia rights, coordination of bowl travel, and many other operational aspects of the department. He also assisted in securing major financial gifts and executive suite licenses. He joined the South Carolina athletic department as assistant athletic director for development in July 1999 and was named associate athletic director in October 2001. He transitioned to senior associate athletic director in July 2003. Edwards played free safety in the NFL for nine seasons after being drafted in the second round of the 1988 draft by the Minnesota Vikings. He also played with the Washington Redskins and Atlanta Falcons and was a starter with the Redskins’ Super Bowl XXVI championship team. Edwards married the former Marlena Brown in May of 2010

Sports Information Intern Newberry College

Charlie Hurley is in his first year as a sports information intern as Newberry College. He serves as the main contact for volleyball, wrestling and men’s and women’s tennis. A native of Duluth, Minn., Hurley graduated from Michigan Technological University in 2010 with a B.A. in Communication. While at Tech, Hurley was a student assistant in the sports information office. His duties included helping to produce game programs, game notes, feature stories, recaps and media guides for the school’s 13 Division I and II sports. He also assisted in various aspects of game management.

Josh Manck enters his fifth year as the sports information director at Newberry College. Manck oversees the publicity and game management for all of Newberry’s 15 Division II sports. Among Manck’s duties are coordination of media coverage, production of media guides, statistical coverage, game management, and maintenance of the official athletics web site. Manck is the Super Region 2 Chair for the DAKTRONICS Division II Football All-America committee and his 2008 football gameday program placed fourth nationalls in the CoSIDA publications competition. Originally from Gilmer, Texas, Manck graduated from Austin College in 2005 with a B.A. in communication arts with an emphasis in media studies. Upon the completion of his degree, Manck was a sports reporter for the Cleburne Times-Review in Cleburne, Texas until June of 2006. Manck is a member of the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) and resides in Newberry.

Brandon Scardigli Sports Information Intern Newberry College

Brandon Scardigli begins his first year as a sports information intern as Newberry College. He serves as the main contact for men’s and women’s soccer, women’s basketball and softball. Originally from New Orleans, La., Scardigli graduated from McNeese State in 2010 with a B.S. in mass communication with a focus in journalism. While at McNeese, Scardigli was a student intern in the sports information office and helped manage the media needs of the Cowboys’ 14 Division I sports.

Brice Zimmerman Creative Services Specialist Newberry College

Brice Zimmerman starts his fourth year as part of the Newberry College athletic department. He serves as a creative serivices specialist, overseeing and creating graphic design work for the Athletic Department. Hailing from Atlanta, Ga., Zimmerman graduated from Valdosta State in 2005 with a degree in mass media with an emphasis on television. Zimmerman has myriad accolades and experience including his work on crews for ESPN Sunday Night Football. Zimmerman resides in Newberry with his wife Diane.

David Nicholson Head Coach

The 2010 season will mark the third year of the David Nicholson era at Newberry. The Olympia, Wash., native came to the Palmetto State to take over as coach of a team that was struggling just to win games. During his first season in 2008, he steered the squad to an 18-13 record and an 8-8 mark in South Atlantic Conference play. The season was highlighted by a win in the first round of the Food Lion SAC Tournament – something that has only happened twice in the past eight seasons. He built upon the success of his inaugural season in 2009 when the team finished with an 18-16 record and a 7-9 tally in SAC play – good for a sixth place finish. While at Newberry, he has had the opportunity to coach four All-Conference team members, three Preseason All-Conference team selections, and a Daktronics All-Southeast Region Team member (Priscila Sales ’08). Before he came to Newberry, Nicholson was the head coach at the University of Texas at Brownsville and Texas Southmost College in the spring of 2008.

Prior to his brief stint in the Lone Star State, Nicholson spent three years at the helm of a Union College team in Barbourville, Ky. Under Nicholson’s tutelage, the Lady Bulldogs experienced one of the most prolific winning periods in the history of their program. In 2007, Union finished up with a 34-15 record, resetting the record for the most wins in school history in the process. Nicholson garnered Coach of the Year accolades both in the Appalachian Athletic Conference and NAIA Region XII. The historic team boasted the AAC Player of the Year, Freshman of the Year, Setter of the Year and Region XII Player of the Year. The 2006 season was successful as well, with a player earning an NAIA All-American Honorable Mention, two NAIA Setters of the Week, three All-Conference First Team members, three All-Region First Team selections and two conference All-Freshman Team choices. Nicholson spent two years before his time at Union as an assistant coach at Western Carolina (N.C.) University. The Division I Catamounts racked up a 28-33 record with the help of Nicholson. Before taking his talents to the college level, Nicholson was an experienced and highly successful high school coach in Washington, Oregon and North Carolina for over a decade. A premier official, Nicholson has officiated many high school volleyball and basketball contests in North Carolina, including the 2002 3A State Championship volleyball match. Nicholson graduated from Western Carolina in 2005 and received his master’s degree in Education from Union in December 2006. He is married to the former Jennifer Rogers of Murphy, N.C. They have a one-year-old son, Jacob, and currently reside in Irmo.

Randy Key Assistant Coach

Randy Key returns for his second year as the assistant coach of the womenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s volleyball team. Prior to his time at Newberry, Key spent three years as the assistant volleyball coach at St. Andrews Presbyterian College in Laurinburg, N.C. Key also played club volleyball from 1995-96 at his alma mater, the University of Arkansas. Key is the chair of the math, physics, and computer science department at Newberry, and has been a professor in the math department for the past four years. Key resides in Newberry with his wife, Kristi, who is is a professor in the english and foreign language departments at Newberry. The two have a daughter, Alison (1).

2010 Volleyball Media Guide After a 2009 season which featured an 18-16 record, and a 7-9 conference mark, the Newberry College volleyball team will have its share of challenges to face early on in 2010. Gone are five seniors that accounted for over 65 percent of the team’s offense. However, with a lineup that returns seven letterwinners and an incoming class with great talent, there are no shortage of high expectations for the Wolves’ 2010 campaign. “The team dynamic is definitely going to change,” says third-year head coach David Nicholson. “When you’ve graduated so many players of a high caliber, it’s always a challenge to see how people will respond and where players will end up fitting in. While we’re a young team, I feel that we’re pretty talented as well. We have four key returnees that are very, very good and when you combine that with the talent that we have coming in, we have the potential to have a great year.” An additional asset that the Wolves haven’t had in previous years is the sheer number of talented players. “We have a very deep team this year, and that’s always good,” said Nicholson. “I feel that we can have better practices with the number of personnel that we have at our disposal, and with improved practice comes improved gameplay come September.” Filling the openings left by All-SAC second team member Lorana Maia, Fernanda Frey, Dani and Niki Hroblak and Kember Lichtie will no doubt be one of the first things that the team addresses. “We’re fortunate to have a number of talented kids that are all going to compete for all of the positions,” said Nicholson. “That being said, once we get every position filled in I expect us to win.” Winning is something that the four seniors on the team have done consistantly. Outside hitter Kara Harris will be called upon to lead the Wolves in her final season in a Newberry uniform. The Grandview, Texas, native was arguably the team’s best all-around player last season as evident by her 218 kills, 314 digs and 50 service aces. Leah Nye will be an imposing presence at the middle blocker position. The 6-0 Hoover, Ala., native had 78 blocks a season ago in addition to 151 kills. Nadia Andrade will look to bounce back after a tough 2009 season at the libero position. Her 393 digs over the couse of the 2008 season have her sitting at sixth

in the record book for that category. Senior Brianna Blakely and sophomore Blair Browning will both see the court from the setter position. Browning had a sensational freshman campaign as she racked up a team high 721 assists in addition to 170 digs. Blakely accumulated 436 assists and paced the team with 450 digs, which was also good for 10th most in the SAC. Junior Lindsey Hollingsworth will look to help out at setter as well. Her 279 digs a season ago were good for fourth most on the team. A bevy of new faces will look to make things happen for the Wolves as well. Anne Staudinger will bring a tall frame to the right side of the court. The 6-0 freshman hails from Fort Wayne, Ind. where she was highly successful both at the high school and club levels. Freshman Samantha Parrish comes to Newberry from Angola, Ind., where the three time all-conference and all-state selection reset the kills per game and kills per season records at Angola High. Cara Hutto comes to Newberry from Holly Hill, S.C. where the prep standout helped her team win a pair of 2A state championships. The 5-10 middle blocker was also lauded as the region 2A MVP in 2009 while also gaining HSSR 2A Player of the Year accolades. The Wolves will begin their schedule with four matches over two days in Anderson. They will wrap up the tournament with a early test against region powerhouse Augusta State in a match that may have significant region ranking implications down the road. Newberry will then return to Eleazer Arena for their first conference matchup of the season against South Atlantic Conference newcomer Anderson. Another tournament then awaits in Mount Olive, N.C. where they will face four teams from four different states in the span of 48 hours. A non-conference tilt against Columbia College will occur before the SAC matchups continue. The Wolves host three games at their home den before hitting the road for eight of their next ten. “It’s a demanding schedule,” said Nicholson, “but we’re a tough team that will rise to the challenges. We’re excited to display how hard we’ve worked.”
