Andy Carter

Vice President for Intercollegiate Athletics

Andy Carter is entering his seventh year as the Newberry College Director of Athletics, having joined the Newberry family in September of 2002.Since taking the helm, Carter has spearheaded several projects in order to turn Newberry Athletics into one of the premier programs in Division II. Carter came to Newberry after 17-year tenure at Missouri Baptist University. Upon receiving his undergraduate degree from the NAIA institution, he began his career as an admissions recruiter and assistant baseball coach while working on his master’s of business administration at Lindenwood University. His degree completion led him to a faculty position as an Instructor of Business Administration and Economics at Missouri Baptist, while at the same time serving the school as head baseball coach. Carter took over as baseball coach in 1991 and during his nine seasons at the helm won seven consecutive conference championships. Seven years into a successful coaching career, he also took over as Missouri Baptist’s athletic director. He served in both roles for two years before leaving coaching in order to devote all his attention to administrative duties. Almost immediately upon his arrival at Newberry, Carter presented the Board of Trustees with the “Newberry College Athletic Initiative”, a long-term plan to secure future athletic success, while maintaining Newberry’s excellent academic record for its athletics teams. Newberry has undergone an overhaul of its athletic program, instituting a stringent evaluation process for all varsity sports. The results were almost immediate, as the athletic program nearly doubled South Atlantic Conference victories in consecutive years under Carter’s reign. Also, for the first time since 1999, Newberry enhanced its offering of varsity sports, adding wrestling and competitive cheerleading. Academic achievement and student development are the cornerstones of the department. A growing student-athlete population (222 in 2002-03 up to 500 in 2007-08) have set the standard in the South Atlantic Conference (SAC) by winning four of the past five GPA titles and have achieved a cumulative GPA as high as 3.01 (2007-2008). The College’s commitment, as evidenced by the implementation of our Mentoring Skills program, is to maintain this success for the future. The student-athlete experience directly correlates to the relationship they have with their head coach. Annual evaluations and emphasis on desired results produced by the head coaches in the department aided in staff hiring and the development process. The success in hiring and developing all departmental staff (Coaches, administration, and staff) is directly correlated to the commitment shown by the College. The tenure of our head coaches, each program’s win-loss records, and the quality of each incoming recruiting class provide a window of the varied levels of success that will continue blessing the College for years to come. Facility enhancement has also been a major focal point for this administration. In the summer of 2006 a new Astro Turf football field was installed. This provided a state of the art field for practice and competition. The team responded by winning all 9 games played at Setzler Field, including our first ever NCAA DII post-season victory. Through the fall 2007 season, Newberry football has produced a 15-0 home record on the new turf. The 2007-2008 academic year brought the Phase I completion of the first of three new facilities at the Smith Road Athletic Complex with the completion of the Baseball facility. This facility will be the proud home for Newberry baseball for years to come and will provide a great opportunity to engage our community. The other facilities slated for the Smith Road Complex are new Softball and Soccer facilities. Also, the Newberry basketball and volleyball teams began playing last season on a new finished gym floor, powered by a brand new, state-of-the art lighting system. Future plans include new facilities for the men’s and women’s tennis teams, a practice facility for the Wrestling program, and determining the best course of action to give the football facilities at Seltzer Field its first facelift in almost 20 years. Success on the fields, courts, and fairways has come as the result of great processes. Our coaches have taught their student-athletes that we must win every day; in the classroom and on the fields, courts, and fairways. During the 2002-03 year we won 19% of SAC competitions. The progress has been steady and reached 53% in 2006-2007. This marked the first time the department ever eclipsed the 50% winning percentage since becoming a DII SAC member. Other competitive successes have come in the All-Sports competition. In 2002-03, we scored 21 points across the 14 representative sport programs. This placed Newbery last in the SAC standings, a place they have finished each year. Once again, the rise has been steady as we scored successively more points each year leading up to the 2006-07 year when we scored 76 points and finished third in the standings, only 6 points out of first place. What a wonderful testament to the support of the College Administration and the hard work of the staff and student-athletes. As the Vice President for Intercollegiate Athletics, he serves on the Newberry President’s Cabinet, under Dr. Mitchell Zais. He also is member of the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics and serves as a Board Member for the D2 Athletics Director’s Association. Carter is married to his wife of 23 years, Rena. They have seven children: Aaron (20), a senior cadet at USMA-West Point, Becca (19), Beth (16), Jake (14), Rachel (12), Caleb (10), and Micah (8).

WE ARE ONE HEAD COACH JEREMY LUTHER

Jeremy Luther was named head men’s basketball coach on April 10, 2007 as announced by Vice President for Intercollegiate Athletics Andrew Carter. In his first season at the helm of the scarlet and gray, Luther led the team to a 12-16 record and tied for sixth in the South Atlantic Conference. Clemente Martin was named to the all-South Atlantic Conference first team, while Grant Domsic was named to the SAC’s all-freshman team. Luther comes from Mercer University in Macon, Ga. where he spent the last six seasons as an assistant coach. While at the Division I institution, Luther was a key component in the recruiting of players from South Carolina, Florida, and Tennessee. Furthermore, he was in charge of the team strength and conditioning program, individual workouts, and the academic development of each student-athlete. Luther was a part of the staff that won the first ever regular season championship in school history and also set the NCAA record with the biggest turn around going from 6-23 to 23-6 and was one win short of an Atlantic Sun Conference Tournament Championship in 2003 and an appearance in the NCAA Tournament. Before coming to Mercer, Luther had stints as a head coach on the high school level at Windsor Academy in Macon, Ga. While there, he led the team to their most victories in seven years. Luther also has previous coaching experience in the state of South Carolina when he was an assistant at North Greenville from 1998-2000. While at North Greenville, Luther was in charge of the development of perimeter players and assisted in the recruitment of players and the scouting of opponents. Luther began his playing career at Robert Morris College where he played from 1992-93. After the season, he transferred to Liberty University where he played for two seasons. He would later transfer to Covenant College where he would score 1,300 points in two seasons with the Scots. Following his senior year, he was named an NAIA Division II All-American after finishing fourth in the country in scoring, averaging 26.0 ppg. “This is a great hire for Newberry College and our Men’s Basketball program,” said Carter. “Jeremy will do a great job in moving this program to the level we desire. We want to compete for the SAC Championship each and every year and I believe that he will lead us to that level. Jeremy is definitely a rising star in this business and we are fortunate to have him leading our team.” “I am extremely excited to be here and am looking forward to working closely with the players and having the opportunity to run my own program,” said Luther. “I am committed to winning and I feel that this is a special situation to be apart of at Newberry College and I just look forward to the challenge.” Luther and his wife Ginny, are the proud parents of a son, Bryson who is 1.

ASSISTANT COACH TRAVIS DOTTERER Travis Dotterer begins his second season as assistant men’s basketball coach at Newberry College. “I am very excited about the opportunity to work at Newberry College for Coach Luther and to have my family be a part of this wonderful community,” Dotterer said. “Travis is a great hire for Newberry College and the Newberry Basketball program,” Luther said. “He brings a ton of head coaching experience and he is one of the best X’s and O’s coaches in the business. He is a rising star and for my first hire as a head coach I could not have gotten a more qualified person anywhere at any level.” Most recently, Dotterer was head boys basketball coach at Mount de Sales Academy in Macon, Ga., from 2000 to 2007. His teams made the GISA AAA Elite Eight four times, and he was named the Region 2AAA Coach of the Year in 2005-06. Mount de Sales was a GISA AAA Final Four team under Dotterer’s direction in 2000-01. In seven years as head coach at Mount de Sales, Dotterer compiled a record of 104-88. Dotterer went to Mount de Sales after serving Clarksville-Northwest High School in Clarksville, Tenn., as assistant boys and girls basketball coach from 1998-2000. He was head boys basketball coach at Mount Vernon Christian/Whitefield Academy in Atlanta, Ga., from 1995-98, and head boys basketball coach at Killian Hill Christian School in Lilburn, Ga., from 1993-95. All told, Dotterer has been a head coach at the high school level for 12 of his 14 years in coaching. Before entering the coaching field, Dotterer was a four-year letter winner in basketball at Bryan College in Dayton, Tenn., graduating with a bachelor of science degree in Secondary Math Education in 1993. He was a three-year team captain and was named a TVAC Academic All-Conference pick and an NCCAA Academic All-American honoree. A native of Indiana, Dotterer is married to his wife Kimberly and the couple has two children, Tyler (10) and Jackson (7).

“He can score from behind the arc, and is also skilled in the post. He’s a solid all-around player,” Luther added.

Also expected to make an impact is redshirt freshman guard Charles Ndoloum. “Charles could play any position on the florr if we needed him to, because he just says ‘Yes, sir, I’ll do it.’ If I have to go small, we can put him out there and he can do anything we need him to.” Junir forward Brett Goodwell and freshman point guard Will Dawkins are also expected to see time on the floor. “Our big thing this year has been ‘WE ARE ONE’. We need to be together as a team. We’ve talked about the big picture being some sort of championship this year. I think on paper we’ve got the ability to, but we’ve got to get mentally tougher to make that happen.” “I think at four of the five positions, we are as deep as we need to be,” Luther said. “At the two and the three you’ve got Matt and Clemente, and behind them you’ve got Grant Domsic. We’ve got Charles Ndoloum, who is as athletic as anyone on the team. We’ve got Coleman Young, who is can shoot it as good as anyone on the team, so you’ve got five kids right there who can play the two or the three. “At the four and five, you’ve got Stephane, Kendrick and Jesse who are three really good four-fives, and you’ve got Ty Overmyer, who is the perfect role player. You’ve got Brett Goodwell, who’s extremely athletic. We’ve got Sami Badawi and Phillip Udom, who could come in when we need them to.” All in all, it looks like the Newberry College men’s basketball team has the pieces in place to challenge for its first SAC title. From here, it’s all about how the scarlet and gray can put those pieces together.

HISTORY OF THE SOUTH ATLANTIC CONFERENCE

The South Atlantic Conference has experienced and enjoyed over 30 years of athletic tradition and excellence. The conference has been tremendously successful due to dedicated people building a premier athletic conference throughout its history. The distant forerunner of the South Atlantic Conference was the North State Atlantic Conference (NSIAC). The NSIAC was formed when the “Little Six”, as it was called, broke from the North Carolina Intercollegiate Athletic Conference in 1930. These charter members included Lenoir-Rhyne College, Atlantic Christian, Catawba College, Guilford College, Elon College, and High Point University. The North State continued to grow over the next 30 years, adding Western Carolina (1933), East Carolina (1947) and Pfeiffer (1960). A name change became necessary when the league accepted Newberry as its first South Carolina member in 1961. The league took on the name Carolinas Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (CIAC) on May 20th of that year. The CIAC saw several changes in the following years as East Carolina withdrew from the league in 1962. Appalachian State and Western Carolina followed in 1971 and 1976. All three landed in the Southern Conference. The South Atlantic Conference was founded in 1975 solely as a football conference. The league received its name from a contest in which Kurt Brenneman of Greensboro, NC became the first to submit the SAC-8 moniker. The SAC-8 consisted of Carson-Newman College, Catawba College, Elon College, Gardner-Webb University, Lenoir-Rhyne College, Mars Hill College, Newberry College, and Presbyterian College. Dr. Fred Bentley, of Mars Hill College, was named league president for its

inaugural year, by a vote of the member institutions. After the first season of play in the SAC-8, the Bears of Lenoir-Rhyne College captured the first football title. In 1989, the league’s 15th year of operation, the South Atlantic Conference became a comprehensive, all-sports conference. That year the South Atlantic Conference sponsored 10 sports - football, men’s and women’s basketball, baseball, softball, men’s soccer, volleyball, men’s golf, men’s and women’s tennis. Later the conference grew to 14 championship sports by adding women ‘s soccer (1990), men’s and women’s cross country (1993) and women’s golf (1999). The South Atlantic Conference was composed of the same eight member institutions from 1975 until 1988, when Wingate University replaced Newberry College as the eighth member institution. Newberry later rejoined the conference in 1996. Since becoming eligible for NCAA Division II postseason play in 1993, the league has sent representatives from all of its sponsored sports to NCAA postseason play. In July of 1998, Tusculum College was admitted as a member of the league, and Lincoln Memorial University began play in the conference in the 2006-07 academic year. The league membership now includes Carson-Newman in Jefferson City, Tenn.; Catawba College in Salisbury, N.C.; Lenoir-Rhyne College in Hickory, N.C.; Lincoln Memorial University in Harrogate, Tenn.; Mars Hill College in Mars Hill, N.C.; Newberry College in Newberry, S.C.; Tusculum College in Greeneville, Tenn.; and Wingate University in Wingate, N.C..

Newberry College...

And The Newberry Community Newberry College has an annual budget of over $16,500,000. The College employs about 225 people—165 salaried and 60 hourly. The monthly payroll exceeds $600,000 and monthly purchases and contracts average $700,000. Over 900 students and 225 employees make purchases in the community every day. The College sponsors around 60 cultural events each year—concerts, plays, art exhibits, lectures. The College hosts around 175 sporting events per year with their 15 NCAA Division II teams—8 men, 7 women. A number of off-campus groups use college facilities for special events. For example, the SC Lutheran Synod Assembly and the SC Lutheran Youth Convention each bring over 400 people into the community. We also host the South Carolina Women of the ELCA, a state-wide ROTC camp, the South Carolina Middle and Senior High Jazz Band Competition, the South Carolina Middle and High School Science Olympiads, the South Carolina Guidance Counselor Conference, several athletic camps, and many more. Special events such as Homecoming, graduations in May and December, Convocations, and accreditation visits in multiple programs bring thousands of visitors to Newberry. A study conducted by the Newberry Chamber of Commerce in 1998 concluded the College has the following economic impact on the city. With major growth in enrollment and accounting for inflation, these numbers would be significantly higher today.

“The economic impact of the Newberry College payroll is $28,000,000.” “The economic impact of total Newberry College spending is $84,000,000.” “The economic impact of student spending is $10,000,000.” “The total economic impact of Newberry College is over $100,000,000 per year.”
