interim executive director
I am honored to introduce myself as the Interim Executive Director at New Avenues for Youth. I have been with the agency since our founding in 1997, serving in many capacities during my tenure, most recently as the Associate Executive Director. This is a transformative time for the agency and I welcome the opportunity to provide leadership as we work to fulfill our mission and increase positive outcomes for the youth we serve. The need in our community has never been greater. An OPB report released in December 2011 shared that “families experiencing homelessness in Portland increased 29% over the previous year.” At New Avenues, this impact is felt daily. We have seen a 48% increase in youth accessing basic services, and this has translated to record numbers of youth on waiting lists for case management and transitional housing. New Avenues is also serving approximately 50 homeless youth with children – a growing trend amongst this population. On an individual level, youth are experiencing greater barriers to self-sufficiency, due to more acute mental health and substance abuse issues, and continue to struggle to obtain living wage employment and affordable housing. Despite the growing needs of our most vulnerable youth, New Avenues has been able to adapt, innovate, and transform thanks to the support of our staff, board, donors and community. The agency is facilitating this work by implementing an aggressive and thoughtfully developed five-year strategic plan that has, and will continue to, guide us through these challenging times. Our first year of implementing the six goals of this plan has moved us closer to actualizing our mission and vision. In order to move upstream to prevent youth homelessness, we have partnered with child welfare organizations and youth service providers to examine the experience of transition-age youth in foster care. This has resulted in a new collective impact strategy that aligns stakeholder’s efforts and mobilizes greater resources toward improving transition outcomes for foster youth. To increase opportunities for youth to achieve self-sufficiency, we have launched our Social Purpose Enterprise Initiative by opening a second Ben & Jerry’s PartnerShop on the Portland State University campus, creating jobs and further exposure to work skills and education for youth. New programs around arts and music engagement, and enhanced programs for youth in college and those pregnant and/or parenting, are deepening our impact and increasing positive outcomes for youth struggling to escape life on the streets. As an agency, we are working to return to our roots of advocacy by engaging staff in trainings and facilitating education and awareness of the broader issues impacting our work and our youth. All of this is possible because of further investment in our staff and leadership. To ensure we have the capacity needed to fulfill our mission, we have created new strategic staff positions and increased the membership and talents on our Board of Directors and Ambassador Board. We will continue to leverage our resources to differentiate ourselves as a highly effective homeless youth service provider. Each year, as we achieve our annual strategic goals, we move closer to realizing our agency’s vision for all young people to have a safe place to call home and the support needed to thrive. Meet charlyn It was the summer of 2008, and Charlyn had just finished high school. Surviving in the woods in the shelter she had built with her own hands didn’t seem so bad to her at the time, until she found out that she was pregnant.
“I knew I had to change,” recounts the young mother. With no money, no home, and no job, Charlyn began staying at a local shelter. “They asked ‘where are you getting your meals?’ and I was like, ‘I don’t know–
where am I supposed to go?’ That’s when Charlyn learned about New Avenues for Youth...

case management New Avenues’ Case Management Program provides each youth with a Masters Level clinical social worker. They work with youth to identify and connect them to needed services and to create a comprehensive plan to work towards a healthy, independent life.

By providing a safe place where basic needs can be met, staff can build trusting relationships with youth and are able to connect them to services that will help them on their path to leaving the streets.

transitional housing our Transitional Housing Program provides a safe home for youth transitioning off the streets and moving toward independence. The 24-bed facility is designed so youth can build independent living skills while working or pursuing education. Upon exiting, youth are self-sufficient & move into stable living situations.

in 2011, TMT Development President and NEW AVENUES board member Vanessa Sturgeon came to new avenues with an idea. construction was halted on one of her company’s downtown projects until 2013, but the space needed refining. A conference room in New Avenues’ downtown facility was transformed into an art space, internationally famed and local artists were brought in, and thirty homeless & at-risk youth signed up to paint a gigantic mural that would soon surround the construction site. Through New Avenues’ PAVE job training program and A.M.P. Artist Mentorship Program, youth were paid wages for their work. And some of them stepped up to take on management roles in the project. See the final installation for yourself! It’s in the downtown core at SW Park and Yamhill until 2013.
