NEWARK SENIOR CENTER
E-mail:
Website:
Dear Friends,
During this season of Thanksgiving, gratitude often is a focus. As I walk through the Center, I know many of you include the Newark Senior Center in the parts of your life for which you are grateful. I have always been drawn to the motto, think globally, act locally. The way we treat others may be the easiest and most important way we can act locally. We all appreciate an environment in which we feel welcomed, included, a sense of belonging.
The staff and members try to provide a welcoming atmosphere. Each year we greet hundreds of new members. This past year 900 new members joined the Center. The NSC is very grateful to provide resources and opportunities to serve the diverse needs and wants of our community. Many of our members come to the Center to participate in fitness opportunities. Although that is the main focus, it is the socialization, the interaction with others that becomes equally important.
As we get to know other members, whether through an exercise class, a discussion group, or a card game, we come to realize that we share common values and concerns. We all hope to age well, we are all concerned about our families, neighbors and others. The NSC provides the chance to interact with people from different backgrounds. I love to see the friendships that form among people from such a variety of experiences.
The sense of community that we all feel when we enter the Center is truly special. There are few other places where we can so freely interact with others. Please consider how you might take this sense of community and mutual respect out into the broader community.
This November is not only the season of Thanksgiving, it is the time when we can exercise one of our basic rights, the right to vote. Please see voting information on page 9.
Thank you for being a part of the NSC community and for the role you play in making the NSC such a treasure.
Happy Thanksgiving,
Reminder – Please scan in or sign in every time you enter the Center. This is in addition to signing into each activity. We need this information for grant reporting purposes. If you need a new key fob, please visit the front desk. Thank you.
The Newark Senior Center is the first and only senior center in Delaware accredited by the National Institute of Senior Centers, a division of the National Council on Aging.
Newark Senior Center Board of Directors is composed of up to 18 members of our community. Meetings are held on the 4th Tuesday of every month (except July & August) at 5:30pm. Anyone is welcome to attend as a guest.

November is a beautiful time to gather around the table with loved ones and enjoy festive meals, especially during Thanksgiving. But amidst all the delicious food and celebration, it's also important to remember to eat healthy. While indulging in all your favorite dishes is tempting, you can still enjoy the holiday feast while making intelligent choices that keep your health in mind. Here are a few tips to help you eat healthier this Thanksgiving without sacrificing flavor or tradition.

With the holiday season on the rise, challenge yourself by adopting healthy habits before Thanksgiving. Start by filling your plate with colorful, nutrient-rich options. Load up on veggies like roasted Brussels sprouts, green beans, or sweet potatoes (without too muchadded sugar or butter). These dishes provide vitamins, fiber, and flavor without being too heavy. Aim to make half your plate full of vegetables, then add smaller portions of turkey, stuffing, and other more decadent dishes. Another tip is to be mindful of portion sizes. Packing your plate high is tempting, but you’ll enjoy your meal more if you eat slowly and savor each bite. Start with smaller portions of the heavier items like mashed potatoes or stuffing. You can always go back for seconds if you’re still hungry.
Consider healthier versions of traditional dishes if you're in charge of cooking. For example, use low-sodium broth for stuffing, swap out butter for olive oil, or try making a dessert with less sugar. These small changes can make a big difference.
Enjoying Thanksgiving doesn’t have to mean giving up healthy eating habits. You can enjoy a satisfying and balanced holiday meal by making mindful choices, controlling portion sizes, and adding plenty of vegetables. Remember, it's all about balance!
