Happy Independence Day! Independence and freedom are closely aligned. A good definition of freedom is being able to do what you want without restraint. For much of our lives we are constrained by obligations to jobs, to family, to others. For many members of our community, this is the time of life when we can experience a sense of freedom. It is a time when we can choose how we spend our day, with whom and where.
One of our long-time members said to me the other day, “I am choosing to spend time doing things that I truly enjoy.” As we enter our later years we can choose how we really live. Many people still have obligations to others but can hopefully carve out more time for themselves. Fortunately our community provides so many options, experiences and destinations. Some are fortunate to remain close to family members who may provide many opportunities for social experiences. Others can choose their social circle, what and how involved we want to be and with whom we spend our time.
No matter what stage of life we are in, our lives are enriched by our interaction with others. Social connections are a critical component of healthy aging. Many of you have chosen to participate in a wide array of programming at the Center. It is heartwarming to see the care and concern our members have for others who have become a part of their daily interactions.
The NSC is truly a unique place as many interact as participants, some contribute as volunteers and many are the recipients of programs and services offered by the Center. We are very grateful for all who have become a part of our community. Our volunteers help us carry out our mission, enhance the experience of other members and are rewarded with a sense of purpose. A special recognition reception was held in June to thank our wonderful volunteers. For those of you who were not able to attend, we are very grateful for the efforts of so many in our community.
I wish you a happy Independence Day and encourage you to explore all that the NSC has to offer.
Reminder – Please scan in or sign in every time you enter the Center. This is in addition to signing into each activity. We need this information for grant reporting purposes. If you need a new key fob, please visit the front desk. Thank you.
The Newark Senior Center is the first and only senior center in Delaware accredited by the National Institute of Senior Centers, a division of the National Council on Aging.

TH: 9:00am
Enjoy the benefits of Mat Pilates sans exercises on the floor! Unlike Mat Pilates, movements will be performed standing or utilizing a chair (modifications provided to suit fitness levels). This full-body session is focused on core strength and stabilization (which helps to reduce fall risk), while training your arms and legs, as well. Utilizing precise moves and breathing techniques for a mind-body connection, this class is designed to boost flexibility and joint mobility, tone your tummy, strengthen the pelvic floor, improve strength and posture. Join us to develop long lean muscles in a strong but gentle way. Expect to reduce back pain, diminish arthritis symptoms, experience better balance, and much more!
