NEWARK SENIOR CENTER

Website:

Dear Friends,

I decided to look up synonyms for “the golden years”. Imagine my surprise when I saw: twilight years, sunset years, debility, - one of my favorites – decrepitude! Previously, I thought of the golden years as something to be treasured! As I look around the Center, I think my definition is more clearly reflected in the experiences of our members.

I know many of you value the many opportunities provided by the Center. We are thrilled to have welcomed 932 new members last fiscal year. We also saw a 30% increase in participation in our fitness programming. This is a true reflection of the quality of the offerings – our amazing instructors - as well as the value of the fitness access pass.

As we age, the number one fear is the loss of independence. This can be due to physical or cognitive decline. We have shared for many years that what is good for the heart is also good for the brain. Dr. Sanjay Gupta recently did a special report called “The Last Alzheimer’s Patient”. The focus was on preventing problems down the road - health care – instead of sick care. He very clearly discussed the importance of the decisions we make every day – to eat healthily, to move more, to learn new skills and to remain connected to others. These small steps can lead to better overall health, including brain health. Small steps – easy to say but we still must make the effort.

The first step may be looking a little deeper into the newsletter. The staff does an excellent job maintaining existing programming but also providing new options each month. The enrichment opportunities and travel program have expanded. We have excellent instructors, amazing volunteers and many willing participants that help to enrich the offerings, experience and interactions here at the NSC.

Enjoy the gift that is your golden years.

REMINDER

Everyone who participates in activites at the Newark Senior Center is expected to have a current membership (Annual: $35, Lifetime: $300). If you choose to participate in the Pool, Fitness Center or Group Exercise Classes, you must have a current Fitness Access Pass ($30/month charged to a card on file) or pay $8/visit or class. Please see a staff person if you have questions. To set up your Fitness Access Pass, please visit the NSC Reception Desk.

Reminder – Please scan in or sign in every time you enter the Center. This is in addition to signing into each activity. We need this information for grant reporting purposes. If you need a new key fob, please visit the front desk. Thank you.

The Newark Senior Center is the first and only senior center in Delaware accredited by the National Institute of Senior Centers, a division of the National Council on Aging.

Jada's Journal

As the manager of the fitness center, I often receive many questions about physical health. However, I want to emphasize the importance of mental health as well. While maintaining physical health is often highlighted, mental health is equally crucial, especially for seniors. One excellent way to enhance mental health is through socializing, and what better place to do this than at the Newark Senior Center.

Regular social interactions can improve mood, increase feelings of happiness, and even reduce feelings of loneliness. The senior center offers a variety of activities that cater to different interests and abilities. Participating in these activities keeps the body active while stimulating the mind, promoting cognitive health and delaying the onset of mental decline.

In conclusion, maintaining mental health by socializing at the senior center is just as vital as maintaining physical health. This August, take the opportunity to visit the senior center, try a new class, and experience the positive impact on your mental well-being. After all, a healthy mind is the key to a happy and fulfilling life.

Congratulations to Jada on receiving her Masters Degree in Clinical Exercise Physiology from Lebanon Valley College!

Winnie Strauss was honored at the Volunteer Appreciation Reception of her many years of volunteer work in the NSC Gift Shoppe. Winnie passed away in February so her family was present to receive the award on her behalf. The following is a poem written by her family to commemorate the occassion.

Thank you for inviting us all here today. At a loss for words not sure what to say. Mom got a poem on each special day so it’s only fitting to share one today.

she’d be touched to be honored in the second home loved. Embarrassed, yet humbled. Looking down from above!

Mom was the title she cherished the most.

But shoppe manager was her favorite boast …Loved making treasures to sell in the store but chatting with customers delighted her more!

An award in her name to be given each year although we’d all rather that she was still here She was the best mom,Neighbor, and Friend. Her NSC Legacy never will end!

We are always looking for new Crafters, so please join us for an upcoming"Juried"
