“I was pretty nervous,” Noel said. “My heart started thumping.”

He tried not to let on that something was up.

The leader of the Royal Lancers isn’t impressed by New Westminster city council’s offer to sit down with his group to discuss their role at future May Day celebrations.

David MacGrotty, chair of the Royal Lancers, said with less than a month until the big day, time is running out for such a discussion. And the public outcry over council’s decision to cancel the Lancer dance shows it miscalculated community support for the longstanding tradition.

“The city has tried to make the issue go away,” said MacGrotty.

“But it’s turned into a common cause, a rallying point for many New Westminster residents.”

On Monday council formed a committee comprised of three councillors, Patrick Johnstone, Jaimie McEvoy and Lorrie Williams, who will meet with the Lancers and May Day organizers to “explore a common vision” for the group after council decided to shut them out of their traditional dance with the May Queen suite at the city’s May Day banquet.

That decision didn’t sit well with the Lancers and their supporters, who bent the ear of council for more than an hour of delegations at a recent meeting.

“I think it’s pretty clear there wasn’t enough dialogue,” said Coun. Bill Harper, who proposed the formation of the committee.

In the nine years they’ve been together, Crystal Johnstone figures Jody Noel has had plenty of opportunities to propose marriage. She never expected her proposal would come in lights, on a theatre marquee.

But that’s exactly what happened Sunday morning when Noel, 33, popped the question on the marquee of the Columbia Theatre.

It was a plan he’d set in motion

months ago.

The couple, who live with their two children in Victoria Hill, often go for walks along Columbia Street to the waterfront. They’d been to a number of shows at the Columbia, loved the old venue.

Once they even took a tour to scout it out as a possible wedding venue, but it was too large and too pricey for their needs.

But that tour, said Noel, planted a seed.

“I’d been thinking of a unique

way to ask her,” said Noel.

“Something that means a lot to both of us.”

He sent an email to the theatre managers, enquiring about the possibility of posting his proposal on the marquee. They were on board.

Then it was just a case of waiting for the weather and circumstances to be just right for Noel and Johnstone to go on their usual Sunday stroll.

Contest will challenge Fraser photogs The Fraser River Discovery Centre is challenging photographers to see red when they point their lenses at the Fraser River.

That’s because “red” is the theme for this year’s annual *click* Photos of the Fraser competition.

“Red is not often a colour associated with the Fraser, but this year we wanted to stretch people’s expectations of the river,” said exhibit coordinator Kathleen Bertrand.

The competition is open to amateur and professional photographers of all ages and submissions will be juried by a panel of judges. Prizes will be awarded to the best photos in three categories, the River Wild, the River at Work and the River’s People.

“We are always surprised by how photographers decide to interpret the theme selected,” said Bertrand. “We are really looking forward to seeing what people come up with.”

Twelve images will be selected for display at the Discovery Centre for one year.

by Aug. 15 and the exhibit of winning photos will open Sept. 23 during RiverFest, the Centre’s annual celebration of living and working on the Fraser River.

There’s only one Casablanca.

But changing times, tastes and technology mean the script for the beloved 1942 Humphrey Bogart film is just as likely to end up in the shredder as the classics vault at Warner Bros. Studios.

Navigating those changes is part of the screenwriter’s craft, says New Westminster author Don Hauka.

In his more than 20 years working in newspaper newsrooms, some of the stories he heard from colleagues and covered himself were so tantalizing, he thought they’d make good fiction fodder. So he turned his keyboard to crime novels. His first, Mr. Jinnah: Securities was adapted into a TV movie broadcast on CBC. He’s since worked on other screenplays, including a documentary about the little known war between First Nations and gold seeking miners in the Fraser Valley in 1858.

Hauka says his journalism background prepared him well for screenwriting.

“They’re very similar in many ways,” he says. “You have to write tight and convey lots of information in a minimal number of words.”

It also gave him a thick skin, perhaps the most important tool in the screenwriter’s survival kit.

“You have to be prepared to compromise,” says Hauka. “You have to choose the hill you’re going to die on.”

That’s because writing for TV and film is a collaborative process that can involve a producer, a director, a cinematographer and

even the actors. Each of them bring their own skills, talents and ideas to the table.

There’s a lot of give and take, says Hauka. Sometimes there are wars.

It can be a slow, arduous process rife with rejection. Hauka says he’s been working on the screenplay for a TV series for six years, making pitches, rewriting, then starting all over again.

“You have to be prepared for the long haul,” says Hauka. “You have to have the desire to tell a story.”

Often, that story starts as a single sentence.

“If you can’t state the story in a single sentence then you won’t

be able to write a screenplay,” says Hauka.

The sentence is then fleshed out to single-page treatment with more detail.

Hauka compares the process to squeezing a novel into an hourglass with a big idea at the top that is then pushed down into a narrow opening to create little components before opening up again to a grand final act.

Computer software and writing guides have made the technical components of screenwriting, like formatting and structure, more accessible. But actually getting a screenplay produced still comes down to an alchemy of hard work and good fortune.

“Writing is only the first step,” says Hauka. “You have to have that harmonic convergence of finding that right fit for the right production. You have to have determination and you’ll find the right people who will help you tell your story.”

Hauka will be giving a screenwriting workshop, How to write your own Casablanca, on Saturday at Douglas College at part of the 5th annual LitFest New West that begins on Friday. Separate dog poop bins to stay in Metro parks Jeff nagel

Metro Vancouver will keep paying a New Westminster business to cut open bags of doggie doo that are deposited in bins in Metro regional parks so the excrement can be treated as sewage instead of going in the garbage to be landfilled or incinerated.

It started as a pilot project more than three years ago but officials now say it will continue on a permanent basis, either as a specific contracted service or as part of a broader future contract for hauling garbage and recyclables.

Metro paid New Westminster-based Scooby’s Dog Waste Removal Service $60,000 last year to retrieve 97,000 kilograms from regional parks, cut open every bag, and dump the waste in with the sewage at the Iona sewage treatment plant.

The dog waste that piles up is a “very big” environmental issue for regional parks, says Metro parks operations manager Gudrun Jensen.

It harms vegetation and exposes people and other animals to bacteria and parasites, she said.

Nor does the region want it going in trash bins.

“It’s not strictly kosher to put into the solid waste stream because it is a biohazardous material.”

Metro is amending its violation enforcement bylaw to require dog walkers to dispose of bagged feces in the designated dog waste receptacles where available instead of in the garbage or elsewhere. Violators will face a $125 fine.

Metro has estimated the 2.5 million dogs that visit its regional parks generate 500 tonnes of dog waste a year, so the recovery rate so far may be less than 20 per cent.

Jensen acknowledged much of it still ends up in the garbage.

“I wish more people would just flush it down the toilet,” Jensen added. “It would make life much simpler.”

Scooby’s owner Bill Droeske argues cities should also provide separate bins because the disposal of dog excrement is banned from the landfill.

“That poop is going into the landfill,” he said. “Even though it’s against the law, the cities do it.”

Droeske has one staff worker who cuts open dog waste bags and puts them in a tanker truck that goes to the treatment plant.

Cities also turn a blind eye to other sources of excrement in the garbage, he said.

“There’s probably a lot more baby poop going in the landfills in diapers, taking up a lot more space, but nobody seems to care about that.”

One of New Westminster’s first barber shops consisted of a barrel plopped in the middle of a 6’ X 6’ storefront on Columbia Street. Its proprietor, George Mead, fashioned a barber pole from a tree branch to let prospectors and pioneers heading up the Fraser River know that he was open for business.

At one of the city’s newest hair salons, B-Bombshell, stylists and clients chat easily about Star Trek and the next instalment of the Star Wars movie series while getting their hair coloured shades of purple and turquoise.

It’s the story of those shops, and the hundreds of others that have groomed the heads of city’s residents over the years, that is told in the New Westminster Museum’s new exhibition, Hair Apparent: A Hairy History of New Westminster.

The exhibit opens Thursday at the Anvil Centre as part of its VIBE event that will include pop-up barbers offering everything from straight razor shaves to hair weaving, as well as bluegrass music and interactive photo art.

Oana Capota, the museum’s curator, said the exhibit is a unique way to tell the history of New West.

That’s because the people who cut hair are, by nature, community minded.

“They’re so involved in making the city better,” said Capota.

And they’ve been a part of the city’s history from its very beginning.

Capota said many of New Westminster’s earliest barber shops also offered baths, a last indulgence before prospectors headed into the bush and a way for them to clean up on their return to city life.

Capota mined the city’s archives and searched genealogy records to trace some of the city’s barbers and stylists. But it wasn’t easy.

Since barber shops and hairdressers are such a common part of the urban landscape, their presence is often taken for granted so they haven’t been well documented.

“It’s real grassroots history,” said Capota, who also interviewed a number of New West’s current hair cutters to include their stories and memories in the exhibit.

One of those was Paul Sanders, whose father-in-law John Van Leese started The Hub barbershop in Uptown in 1955.

He joined the family trade because, he said, “it’s a great job where you meet nice people and you’ll never be broke.”

Sanders, who donated his own collection of old barbering implements such as razors, clippers and sharpening straps to the exhibit, said it’s the people he meets every day that has kept him behind the chair and through moves to five locations around Uptown over the years.

“It’s a very personal business,” he said. “People confide in you. They’re not

customers, they’re customer-friends.”

They also span generations.

Sanders said he’s cut the hair of sons of sons of sons.

“I’ve helped raise a lot of kids,” he joked.

“Sometimes they listen to the barber better than their parents.”

Capota said that personal connection is a common thread through the city’s barbering history.

“Everybody loves their job,” she said.

“They love to talk. They care about the people they work with.”

MLA Judy Darcy hosted the New Westminster Youth Ambassador Team in Victoria on April 14. The students attended Question Period and were introduced in the house by the MLA, followed by pictures in the Rotunda, a tour of her office, lunch in the MLA dining room, a private tour of the library and tour of the Parliament Buildings. The team was extremely impressed with seeing how our provincial government operates, in person. The history of “banging on the desk” and having the desks two sword lengths apart were fascinating bits of trivia from the past. As a business owner, enhancing our educational offerings and the diversity of programming is good for the vibrancy of any city. Bravo to students Living in New Westminster I have taken serious interest in the movement of thermal coal through our area and am adamantly against it.

I read with great interest the articulate column written by Sadie DeCoste. In a day and age when our young people are not given a lot of credit, I would like to commend her and the group that took the time and great effort for their petition in opposition of the expansion of the Fraser and Surrey coal port.

It is because of the youth of today and the future that this project worries me. We do not know the long-term effect it will have on this generation. We have lived too long locking the barn after the horse is dead.

Our youth need to be heard. They have much to give to our community, they are the future leaders. I hope they will continue to work hard for what they believe in!

Tjernagel gives Brazilian Olympian a run for her money

Sprinter Raquel Tjernagel has beaten her high school rivals and older competitors at university. Now she’s taking on the world.

The New Westminster secondary school student recently raised eyebrows on the international track circuit when she finished second in the 400m at the Bryan Clay Invitational in Azusa, California. Her time of 52.26 was behind only Brazil’s Geisa Coutinho, a two-time Olympian and South American champion who was the winner in 51.57.

Her time was also more than two seconds faster than her previous personal best, and it was the fastest time in the world for a U20 athlete and the best time for a high school athlete in North America so far this season.

Tjernagel also won the 400m race at the recent Emilie Mondor Invitational track meet at Simon Fraser University, where she faced college competitors.

Last year Tjernagel led her Hyacks high school team to their first title in the B.C. High School Track and Field

Fourteen-year-old Hannah Ginogino is earning her independence one step at a time.

Four months ago the Glenbrook Middle School student began delivering the NewsLeader to homes in her neighbourhood. She sets out after school two days a week with 117 papers, taking about an hour and 20 minutes to finish her route.

“I like earning my own money so I learn independence,” she says. “Instead of asking my parents for money, I have a job.

And by having money of my own I learn that it’s not endless.”

More carriers are needed for the four community newspapers in Burnaby and New Westminster: the Burnaby and New Westminster NewsLeaders, Burnaby Now and the New Westminster Record.

All of the papers are now owned by Glacier Media, which amalgamated the

distribution centres and changed some of the publishing days.

In New Westminster, carriers now deliver the Record on Wednesdays and the NewsLeader on Thursdays.

In Burnaby, carriers now deliver the Now on Wednesdays, the NewsLeader on Thursdays and the Now on Fridays.

Not all of the Burnaby carriers, however, were able to make the switch from two to three days a week so there is a particular need to find new carriers for the Burnaby papers.

The circulation staff has been putting in extra hours to fill any gaps in the routes.

“Our distribution team is phenomenal,” says manager Christy Foubert. “We care about our carriers and need them to know that we appreciate them — they’re doing a lot.

“We also appreciate the patience of our readers. We’re sorry for your frustration.

Untreated hearing loss tied to lower earning potential Maximizing one’s ability to hear well should be part of any smart career strategy. Individual performance in an organization is found to be directly related to listening ability or perceived listening effectiveness. People who both hear and listen well are also more likely to establish positive working relationships with bosses, clients, and colleagues.

An alarming new study by the Better Hearing Institute (BHI) reveals a direct correlation between unaddressed hearing loss and earnings. The national survey, entitled “The efficacy of hearing aids in achieving compensation equity in the workplace,” clearly demonstrates that hearing loss has a significant impact on people’s ability to earn a livelihood. The study underscores how critically important it is for workers to treat hearing loss early in order to maximize their job performance and earning potential.

According to Sergei Kochkin, PhD, author of the study: “The real tragedy in delaying hearing loss treatment is that when left unaddressed, hearing loss negatively affects individuals and their families for the rest of their lives in the form of lost wages, lost promotions, lost opportunities, lost retirement income, and unrealized dreams. But when people with even mild hearing loss use hearing aids, they improve their job performance, increase their earning potential, enhance their communication skills, improve their professional land interpersonal relationships, stave off depression, and improve their quality of life.”

Coun. Chuck Puchmayr said modernizing May Day has been an ongoing process, but cancelling the Lancer dance became necessary when the city was informed by the school district, which organizes the event’s daytime activities, that the evening banquet “is a city function, it’s not a school district function.”

That means “there needs to be protocols that need to be engaged,” said Puchmayr. “Best practices should be in place. Nobody in the city that works with young people should be above that.”

Coun. Patrick Johnstone admitted the city may have underestimated the attachment some members of the community have to the Lancer dance tradition.

“I’m comfortable in the direction we’re moving, but I’m not happy with the discussion we’re having,” said Johnstone. “A lot of it is not constructive. It’s not working to bring people together.”

Johnstone suggested the Lancers themselves could help that process by better explaining their role and the importance of maintaining their traditional dance.

But MacGrotty said the tradition stands on its own merit.

“Traditions like the century-old dances are part of the very fabric that keeps our community together,” said MacGrotty. “They connect new generations with our historic past, and I think city council has underestimated the value our residents place on that.”

Coun. Jaimie McEvoy said the passion of debate over the Lancer dance makes him wonder if the community is ready to embrace wholesale change to some of its traditions.

“Some changes are desirable in a modern context,” said McEvoy. “Is it an either/or situation? I’m not sure we’ve reached that point yet.”

But Harper said talking about changes openly with all the parties involved could go a long way to soothing hard feelings.

“The real question is… whether it’s possible to have a common vision for the role of the Lancers,” said Harper.

“At least we have to have a stab at it.”

The weather was perfect. The couple headed out for their walk at 9:30, following their usual route along the north side of Columbia towards Westminster Quay.

Noel had arranged for his proposal to be posted on the west side of the marquee, so Johnstone couldn’t see it coming.

As they passed in front of the New West police station, Noel looked across the street and said, “Oh, look who’s coming to the Columbia.”

He didn’t mean comedian Tony Rock.

It took Johnstone a few moments to process the words she was reading. At first, she said, she couldn’t understand why Noel was excited the Columbia was advertising

“I was in shock,” Johnstone said. “I couldn’t talk. I didn’t know it was real.”

But when Noel dropped to one knee and took her hand, she knew her proposal had finally come.

“There was always these moments I thought he would propose,” said Johnstone. “He wanted to surprise me.”

The couple called their parents and told them there was a surprise for them on Columbia Street. As they awaited their arrival, a police officer came out of the station to congratulate them.

The public proposal caught the eye of passersby. Photos of the marquee were posted on Twitter.

“I never expected him to do such a public thing,” said Johnstone. “I’m the extrovert. He’s more conservative, calm and relaxed.”

And now they’re engaged, with the wedding set for Sept. 2016.
