The Consolidated Virginia Mine in Virginia City, site of the Big Bonanza of the 1870s.
In 1867, the Consolidated Virginia Mining Company began operations in Virginia City, but did not immediately achieve success. In 1871, James Flood—in partnership with John Mackay, James Fair, and William O’Brien—bought stock in Consolidated Virginia, forming the Bonanza Firm. Eventually, the men bought the land owned by Consolidated Virginia. They hit the “Big Bonanza” in 1873, extracting more than $100 million in silver ore over the next nine years. 10

cclaimed magician and illusionist Criss Angel is debuting his newest act, CRISS ANGEL MAGICjam, on stage at The Luxor through March. As headliner of one of the best-selling magic shows in Las Vegas, CRISS ANGEL BeLIEve, Angel is bringing a variety of acts and some of the world’s most celebrated musicians together for a limited time. Created and hosted by Angel, the new show features an anthology of his greatest acts and illusions. ACM PARTY FOR A CAUSE FESTIVAL
SECOND ANNUAL COUNTRY MUSIC FESTIVAL ROCKS THE LINQ. On April 4-5, the Academy of Country Music is hosting the second annual ACM Party for a Cause Festival, headlined by country stars Rascal Flatts and Keith Urban. The event takes place at The LINQ, Caesars Entertainment’s new open-air retail, dining, and entertainment district in the heart of the famous Las Vegas Strip. The full line-up includes Joe Nichols, Jerrod Niemann, Thomas Rhett, Chris Young, The Cadillac Three, three ACM New Artist of the Year nominees, and more. The two-day outdoor music festival is the first special event held at The LINQ since opening. The LINQ transforms into a country music fan’s paradise during the ACM Party for a Cause Festival. The festival stage will be placed next to the Las Vegas High Roller, the focal point of The LINQ and the world’s tallest observation wheel. “We are thrilled to kick off the first of many large-scale concerts and events at The LINQ with the Academy of Country Music,” says Jon Gray, vice president and general manager of The LINQ. “Caesars Entertainment has always been an industry leader in presenting top-of-the-line entertainment experiences in Las Vegas, and our space at The LINQ offers many new opportunities for us to continue to raise the bar of the city’s entertainment landscape.” The festival includes multiple stages for live country music performances, interactive games, a country marketplace, and more. The event is part of The Week Vegas Goes Country, leading up to the 49th Academy of Country Music Awards on Sunday, April 6.

BOUTIQUE HOTEL AND CASINO OFFERS UNIQUE DINING AND NIGHTLIFE OPTIONS. The Cromwell—Las Vegas’ newest boutique hotel and casino— is set to debut on the Strip this spring. The venue is the result of a $185 million renovation by Caesars Entertainment, and provides Strip visitors with several new dining and nightlife options. Dining options include Italian cuisine by chef Giada De Laurentiis in the resort’s restaurant—GIADA. GIADA features an antipasto bar and signature dishes by De Laurentiis. The annual parade of haulers down the world-famous Las Vegas Strip and a free day of NASCAR Sprint Cup testing are set to kick off the annual NASCAR Weekend at Las Vegas Motor Speedway (LVMS) beginning Wednesday, March 5. The hauler parade begins at 6 p.m. on the south end of the Strip, and proceeds north to Sahara Avenue before heading north on Interstate 15 en route to the speedway. On Thursday, March 6, the NASCAR Sprint Cup teams are testing the new rules package from noon to 4 p.m. The grandstands and Neon Garage are open and free to all race fans. “These are two great fan events to start the race weekend,” said LVMS President Chris Powell. “The hauler parade has brought thousands of fans to the Strip to watch the team transporters make their way to the speedway. The test session will be very vital for the teams as they prepare for both the Kobalt 400 and the remaining superspeedway races.” The speedway also is planning a Q&A session on Thursday following the test session with several of the Sprint Cup drivers. The gates open for Stratosphere Pole Day at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, March 7, with the Boyd Gaming NASCAR Nationwide race set for 1:15 p.m. on Saturday, March 8, and the Kobalt 400 beginning at noon on Sunday, March 9. There are also two nights of World of Outlaws action on the dirt track on March 6 and 7. 14

SPRING LAS VEGAS RESTAURANT WEEK CULINARY EVENT RAISES FUNDING FOR SOUTHERN NEVADA FOOD BANK. Locals and tourists will once again have the opportunity to help out by dining at some of Las Vegas’ best restaurants while supporting Three Square Food Bank during Spring Las Vegas Restaurant Week, March 7-14. Since its inception in 2007, Las Vegas Restaurant Week has raised more than $786,000 for Three Square, helping to provide more than 2.3 million meals to those in need in Southern Nevada. A variety of restaurants at all Station Casinos’ properties will join restaurants on the Strip and throughout the Las Vegas Valley in participating. “We have been long time supporters of Three Square since its inception and we’re very excited to participate in Restaurant Week,” said Station Casinos spokesperson, Lori Nelson. “Our Culinary team is already busy planning special menus to help make this Restaurant Week the best one yet.” Diners can visit any participating restaurant during the specified dates and enjoy a multi-course, prix fixe menu specially created for Las Vegas Restaurant Week. Each restaurant will create
their own delicious menu offering at price points ranging from $20.14 to $50.14, with a fixed portion of the proceeds benefiting Three Square and the fight against hunger in Southern Nevada. MINDBENDER MANSION INTERACTIVE EXHIBIT STRAINS BRAINS AT LAS VEGAS MUSEUM. Visitors to the DISCOVERY Children’s Museum in Las Vegas have a chance to enter the wonderfully puzzling world of Mindbender Mansion—an eclectic traveling exhibit full of puzzles, brainteasers, and interactive challenges guaranteed to test the brain power and problem solving skills of even the most experienced puzzlers. Through April 27, adults and children alike can exercise their minds as they try to master each of the 40 individual brainteasers and the five group activities. Visitors to Mindbender Mansion are greeted by the wacky Mr. E., master brainteaser and puzzler extraordinaire, and current curator of the Mindbender Society. Mr. E explains the mysteries of Mindbender Mansion and how to become a member of the eccentric Mindbender Society by gathering hidden clues and secret passwords. The clues can only be found by solving key puzzles found in select areas. Throughout the exhibit, visitors find a combination of tabletop brainteasers they can solve on their own and larger group challenges that require assistance from their fellow mansion guests. Upon completing each of the select brainteasers and group challenges, visitors will have gathered the necessary clues and secret passwords to become a member of the Mindbender Society and add their portrait to the wall of fame.
GROUP CHALLENGES INCLUDE: FEEDING FRENZY Kitchen mayhem is guaranteed in a race to beat the clock by filling T.V. dinner trays on a fast moving conveyer belt. FLYING MACHINE Solid teamwork is a must in order to maneuver a mechanical “flying machine” around a large game board hitting six targets in sequence before the time is up. SPELLING FEVER Hopscotch meets Scrabble in this race to spell correct words within a limited amount of time by hopping on letter squares that light up.

CHARMING RIVERSIDE DESTINATION OFFERS UNPARALLELED EXPERIENCE.

When my husband and I had the opportunity recently to stay at the Siena Hotel Spa Casino in Reno, I was very intrigued. Even though we live a short 60 miles away, I looked forward to a relaxing weekend in a boutique resort. At first, I wasn’t sure what to expect, as the concept of a boutique resort was new to me, but our visit was a very pleasant surprise. The location of the Siena is unique, as it sits right next to the Truckee River and all of the north-facing rooms have a beautiful view of the river and the downtown Reno skyline. Our room was replete with premium soaps and linens, and upon request, even feather pillows. The hotel only has 214 rooms, so there were really no crowds anywhere, which meant great reservation times for the Whitewater Restaurant and Sushi Saga, and easy scheduling for the spa. The real highlight of our visit, however, was the service. Everywhere we went, the staff went above and beyond to make us comfortable. We had dinner in the Rotunda Bar one night, with both the bartender and cocktail waitress making us feel like we 26
were visiting the home of a friend. During the second day of our visit, I was coming back from shopping and pulled into valet. I had used this service several times in the last couple days so was surprised there was no one to take my car. After waiting for about five minutes, a young man came running out and apologized for not meeting me immediately. I thought I’d finally found a chink in their armor, however, before I could get inside the front door, the hotel manager, Kimberley Roberson, came running up to me, shook my hand, and apologized for the inconvenience. I can say I’ve stayed at hundreds of hotels all over the country and have never had that kind of attention. If all boutique resorts are like the Siena, I plan on searching them out whenever I’m traveling. ROCKY MOUNTAIN OYSTER FRY HISTORIC DISTRICT DISHES UP CURIOUS CULINARY CREATIONS. Virginia City celebrates its nuttiest festival— the 23rd annual Rocky Mountain Oyster Fry— on March 15. This zany tradition summons more than 20 cooks dishing up an abundance of livestock testicles during one of Northern Nevada’s most popular tasting contests. The Nevada 150 official event coincides with the Virginia City St. Patrick’s Day Parade, ensuring a celebration not lacking in fun or fervor. Though most commonly deep-fried, participant chefs are always fixing up fresh and innovative twists on traditional festival dishes. Testicles are ground up to make chili and meatballs; they are even wrapped in bacon before they are served to patrons with a hankering for the pseudo mollusks. This year’s testicle festival features live Irish music, a beer garden, and individual and team Rocky Mountain Oyster-eating contests. The St. Patrick’s Day Parade begins at noon and ensures an abundance of Irish dancers and floats. The evening is topped off in Virginia City’s pubs during the Leprechaun Bar Crawl.

PEDAL CARS: KIDS CLASSIC RIDES IMAGINATIVE EXHIBIT ROLLS THROUGH RENO MUSEUM. Through May 22, visitors to the National Automobile Museum in Reno are treated to an exhibit that is miniature in size, but substantial in impact. During its 24th-anniversary celebration, the museum is paying tribute to iconic toys and prize collectables during its newest exhibit, “Pedal Cars: Kids Classic Rides.” The exhibit features an array of pedal cars, most notably Nellybelle—a miniature version of the Jeep from television’s “The Roy Rogers Show”—along with the Casey Jones Cannonball Express locomotive. All pieces of the exhibit are from the private collection of Sandy and Ralph Theiss of Sparks. Originating as toys for wealthy families, pedal cars reached heightened popularity in the 1920s and early 1930s. Production lost momentum during The Great Depression before stopping during WWII, when manufacturing focused on the war effort. Popularity ramped up in the 1950s and ’60s, when pedal cars began to mimic their full-sized counterparts. In addition to the new exhibit, the museum features more than 200 classic automobiles.

A SUMMER DAY IN TUSCARORA

Tuscarora’s great event takes place every other year, usually over Memorial Day weekend: Open Studios, during which visitors may tour the ateliers and meet the “sensitives” (as my friend Buckeye Blake calls them) who make the art. This year the event was delayed to coincide with the dedication of the community’s lovingly restored Tuscarora Society Hall, the happy ending to a grueling ten-year effort by the small community. Tuscarora is about 50 miles north of Elko via the Mountain City Highway (State Route 225) and State Route 226. There is no store, no cafe, no saloon, and no commerce in the usual sense. There are only homes, studios, workshops, the post office, and now the Society Hall, which will be staffed by volunteers on August weekends. Tuscarora began as a campfire in the sagebrush with a small group of Union Civil War veterans sitting around it. This was July 1867, and they were so elated with their placer mining prospects on the Owyhee River that they were already dreaming up a town site with a plaza at its center, a bank here, a hotel there, an opera house, saloons sprinkled all around, and the whorehouses back here—and then puzzled over a name for it. One of them proposed Tuscarora, after the Union gunboat he had served aboard during the war, and it stuck. After its second winter, Tuscarora was still a tent camp of fewer than a dozen placer miners, making a hard living. But on May 10, the transcontinental railroad was completed and all the Chinese workers were cut loose. The 1870 census counted 105 Chinese and 15 whites in the district. Most, if not all of them were working long toms and riffle boxes in the Owyhee and its tributaries. In 1871, William O. Weed made a gold and silver strike on the flank of Mt. Blitzen a couple of miles to the northeast, and Tuscarora moved, miners, tents, name, and all. The original site is 36
almost forgotten now, difficult to find and even more difficult to get to. In 1900, 669 inhabitants remained. The two stores had closed by then, and the building housed the local masonic lodge until 1938. The population hasn’t been above 50 since the 1920s, when the structure was put to a variety of uses but was principally a saloon. Just now the population is back down to about a dozen who winter through, plus maybe 20 more who return every spring and depart every autumn. Dennis Parks helped put Tuscarora on the art map. He came in 1972 with his young family, to work in solitude as a potter, and eventually to establish his now famous pottery school. His memoir, “Living in the Country Growing Weird,” is a Nevada classic. In the early 1990s, John Fahnstock finally succeeded in buying the building after years of trying, and he rebuilt the western wall, which had failed; it’s thanks to him the building is still standing. A group of local citizens formed a private non-profit organization, The Friends of Tuscarora and Independence Valley, and began the project by raising $20,000 in private funds to purchase the building from John. The group then gave the property to Elko County, and applied for grant funding to complete the transformation from a crumbling ruin to a remarkable living artifact, celebrating the long and colorful history of Tuscarora and the Independence Valley. nevadatravel.net
