>> VISION

We are dedicated to moving Nevada and Vernon County toward a higher quality of life for all residents. Through active business and community involvement, we are ensuring the current and future success of our members, their families, and our community.

September 20, 1899 marked the start of the Commercial Club, the forerunner of today’s Chamber of Commerce. It was organized to “promote Nevada’s material welfare, encourage investors, manufacturers and all legitimate enterprises, and push Nevada to the front.”

In organizing, the President, Charles Strohm, indicated, “We want capital to flow into our city. We want labor employed. We want Nevada to become a great city.”

They voted to charge $100 for the entrance fee and $1.75 per month dues, payable quarterly. They pursued the “charge of securing splendid quarters and furnishing rooms in fine shape”, renting a suite of rooms in the Duck Building at $20 per

month. Original committees included Executive, Railroads, City, Health, Factories, Roads and Highways, Arbitration, Furnishings, Wholesale Establishments, Retail, Agriculture Products, Legislation, Insurance, Finance, Advertising, Receptions and Soliciting. Although changes in the organization have occurred, essentially the goals remain the same.

Today, the Nevada/Vernon County Chamber of Commerce’s top priority is still that of promoting Vernon County and all of the components that make the community a success. The Chamber has a 13-member Board of Directors and an Executive Director. Membership is open to any business, individual, or organization doing business in Vernon County. The Chamber office is located at 225 W. Austin, Suite 200 in Nevada.

HISTORY of Nevada & Vernon County

Progress was a popular word in the United States a century ago, and no less so in Nevada, MO. Nicknamed the “Gem City” of Southwest Missouri, the future was bright for the seat of Vernon County in the early 20th century. With a population of over 10,000 and a bustling courthouse square, the town looked forward to a prosperous days ahead.

>> Homeland of the Osage

The first European explorers to travel through what became Vernon County encountered the Osage, a tribe of proud warriors noted for their exceptional height and fighting prowess. Although feared by their neighbors, the Osage managed to coexist peacefully by the time an expedition led by Zebulon Pike traveled through the area in 1806. Eventually, the Osage signed a treaty ceding their lands in Missouri to the United States and moved west in 1826. Remnants of their last settlement can be seen at the Osage Village State Historic Site in the northeast part of the county.

>> Civil War Comes

Vernon County was founded in 1855 and named for Col. Miles Vernon, a Missouri State Senator and veteran of the War of 1812. When the Civil War began in 1860, Nevada City, the county seat, became known as the “Bushwhacker Capital” as many local men who did not join the Confederate Army chose to become guerrilla fighters, forming small bands which raided Union supply trains, ambushed Federal troops, and harassed Unionist civilians. Women, known as “Lady Bushwhackers” participated in the fight as well, sometimes acting as scouts, guides and suppliers for their men.

>> Out of the Ashes

Nearly every town in Vernon County, including Nevada City, was burned to the ground by 1865. Once the war ended, ex-Union and Confederate soldiers came together to rebuild their towns and farms. The Missouri Kansas & Texas (MKT) Railroad arrived in Nevada in 1870 and later the Lexington & Southern, bringing with them rapid economic and population growth. Virginia Alice Cottey founded Cottey College in 1884, which continues to this day as a prominent educational institution for women. State Hospital #3 for the mentally ill was built in 1887, becoming the largest building west of the Mississippi River. The cornerstone of the now iconic Vernon County courthouse was laid in 1906 and still stands as proudly today as it did over a century ago. A beautiful spring-fed lake surrounded by a park was created in the 1880s and later became known as Radio Springs. The lake was touted as a health and recreational resort for those wishing to swim, play, and drink the “healthful” waters.

As Nevada and Vernon County look forward to another exciting century of progress and change, the county boasts a rich and fascinating heritage and Nevada is still a “gem” of a city.

Bushwhacker Museum

212 W. Walnut St •Nevada, MO 64772

Open May 1- October 31 l Wed - Sat 10-4

The Bushwhacker Museum opened in 1965 in the former Vernon County Jail and Sheriff’s home on North Main Street, a building once described as a “dungeon of medieval malevolence”. The jail had such a bad reputation prior to its closing in 1960, that some prisoners supposedly preferred to spend time at the Missouri State Penitentiary in Jefferson City. The name of the museum hearkens back to the Civil War days when the town of Nevada City was nick-named the “Bushwhacker Capital”. The museum was named after the much feared and often colorful pro-Southern guerrilla fighters known as “Bushwhackers”. In 1997, the Bushwhacker Museum moved to the renovated Moss Building where it quickly grew to include exhibits on Osage Indians, Cottey College, railroads, State Mental Hospital #3, county schools, agriculture, and local medicine.

As a comprehensive regional history museum and genealogical research center, the Bushwhacker Museum serves the local community as a gathering place and a prominent attraction for tourists eager to learn more about the history of the Civil War in Missouri.

THE CAMPUS

COTTEY COLLEGE

The story of Virginia Alice Cottey and the founding of Cottey College is a familiar one to area residents. Guided by the belief that women deserved the same quality of education as men, she and her sisters pooled their money, $3,000, and built a school in Nevada, Missouri. Vernon Seminary, as it was known initially, opened its doors on September 8, 1884, in a two-story red brick building with 28 students from kindergarten through a two-year collegiate course.

The most obvious change over time has been to the face of campus. The central part of Main Hall, on Chestnut and Austin, was the campus for the first few years. As needed, the College added three residence halls, an academic building, a gymnasium (which now houses dance studios), another gymnasium, a chapel, and a library. Nevada residents may also remember the dedication of the Haidee and Allen Wild Center for the Arts in 1989, the Rubie Burton Academic Center in 1998, and most recently the Judy and Glenn Rogers Fine Arts Building in 2015. The Norman House was added as the Helen and George Washburn Center for Women’s Leadership in 1998. Today, the campus has 17 buildings on 11 city blocks with a lodge on 33-wooded acres.

>> THE INSTRUCTIONAL PROGRAM

Although originally a school with classes from kindergarten through college, in 1932 Cottey dropped the lower grades and focused on the two-year collegiate program to concentrate resources and achieve accreditation. Today, Cottey offers fouryear degree programs in Biology; BusinessAdministration; Criminology; Elementary Education; English; Environmental

Studies; Health and Biomedical Sciences; International Business; International Relations; Liberal Arts; Organizational Leadership; Psychology; Secondary Education; and Women, Gender, and Sexuality Studies. The College anticipates adding additional baccalaureate programs in the next few years.

Cottey is accredited by The Higher Learning Commission and is an accredited institutional member of the National Association of Schools of Music.

>>INTERNATIONAL FOCUS

In 1949, the College initiated a program to recruit international students. Cottey became known as the “College of World Friendship” in the decade that followed. Approximately 13 percent of today’s student population is international, 20 percent of the faculty are from other countries, and this academic year 24 different countries are represented on campus. What’s more amazing, however, is Cottey’s commitment to send each student on a trip abroad. Cottey initiated its International Experience trips in 1999. Every sophomorelevel student is eligible to go on the oneweek trip to a European city over the first week of spring break. Those trip offerings have grown over the years as well. In 2018,

Cottey students may travel to England, Sri Lanka and India, or Japan. In past years students could choose from trips to Italy, Thailand, Tanzania, and New Zealand.

>>GROWTH

Cottey opened with 28 students in 1884. Today, full residential enrollment is 350 students, but the College is looking to grow. Most recently, the College raised over $3 million to create a centrally located common area in the lower level of the Chapel. The new Susan Bulkeley Butler Center for Campus Life contains the Chellie Club, the campus snack bar/coffee shop, as well as the Bookstore/Spirit Shop and new outdoor and indoor meeting spaces. Dedicated in April 2020, the new campus center put a studentfocused space in the heart of campus. It is a place to build community, pay homage to the past, and generate excitement for the future.

Regardless of changes that may occur in the future, Cottey will hold fast to its mission to educate women to become learners, leaders and citizens in a global society.

For more information on Cottey College, please visit the website at www.cottey.edu.

The current location offered classes to 170 students the first semester in the new space. Since that time, the campus has seen over 1,500 area residents complete Associate degrees from 18 neighboring communities. Both the Moss Trust and 3M Corporation have made significant contributions to Crowder Nevada since 1999.

Science: Biology, Chemistry, Microbiology & Physical Science, Nursing, English, College Algebra, Psychology, Art & Music History/Appreciation, Economics, Spanish, U.S. History, Literature, and many more.

The program has grown and now graduates approximately 25 nurses each May. Current capacity for nursing students is 55. Licensed Practical Nurses can complete the program in one year if their core requisites are completed. Students may complete all their core subjects, plus apply and complete their nursing degree at the Nevada Campus. Classes are typically two days a week and clinicals are one day a week. Applications for the Nevada Nursing program are available by October 15th each year and must be completed and submitted by February 15 to be considered for the August-starting nursing program.

Practical Nursing was added to Crowder College in 2019. The program is offered in a two-semester format over 9 months. The program has capacity for 16 students each August. Applications for admission to the program open in December, with a closing application date in April.

Crowder Nevada partners with Missouri State University to offer a Bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education and a Bachelor’s degree in Business through the Nevada campus. For more information about Crowder College, call 417-6670518 or stop by the campus at 600 West Edwards Place, Nevada MO 64772.

Annually, the Y engages more than 3000 members and program participants throughout Vernon County and surrounding communities. As the area’s leading nonprofit committed to helping people and communities to learn, grow, and thrive, our contributions are both farreaching and intimate—from our commitment to teach every child how to be safe in and around the water to the individual support we provide to an older adult seeking to maintain their mobility.

More than 20 years ago, the Osage Prairie YMCA was founded by a group of volunteers who wanted to improve this great community. Today, Y volunteers and our supporters remain at

the heart of our organization. It is only through the support of our hundreds of volunteers and public and private donors that we are able to serve more people and deliver on our cause to strengthen community. We are always seeking new volunteers who want to take an active role in bringing about meaningful, enduring change right here in our own community.

When you are involved with the Y, you help bring about lasting personal and social change. Whether it is nurturing the potential of every child and teen, improving

our community’s health and well-being, or supporting and serving our neighbors, the Y ensures that everyone has the opportunity to become healthier, more confident, connected and secure.

As Vernon County’s leading nonprofit for youth development, healthy living and social responsibility, the Y works side-by-side with our neighbors every day to make sure that everyone, regardless of age, income or background, has the opportunity to learn, grow and thrive.

THINGS TO DO Nevada Public Library

In 1898, a group of seventeen Nevada women met at the Hotel Mitchell to organize the town’s first library. A house‐to‐house canvass initially provided books to fill a small space, then additions to the collection were donated or financed through teas, socials, bazaars, and local entertainment. For the first few years, the library was housed in rooms provided by the Commercial Club in the Duck Block, at the Northeast corner of Washington and Cherry Street. When the Vernon County Courthouse completed construction in 1908, the County Court offered space to the library. The library remained there until 1917 when the town built its own library building, located on the corner of Austin and Ash, with $17,500 donated by the Andrew Carnegie Foundation. The Carnegie building was determined to be “distinctive and lofty, perfectly arranged and beautifully and artistically finished.” It was a handsome structure that served as Nevada’s public library for 80 years. Eventually, the library outgrew the stately structure that housed it.

The new library location was opened at 218 W. Walnut Street on May 12, 1997. This building had been erected in 1920 by the Moss and Urner families as a Ford Agency, and was donated to the library by the Finis M. Moss Charitable Trust. The extensive renovation was paid for by private donations from individuals, local businesses and a matching grant from the Moss Trust. The basement of the Finis M. Moss Building is leased to the Vernon County Historical Society and houses the Bushwhacker Museum. In June 2013, The Healthy Nevada Innovation Center opened in the upper level and is the hub for health & wellness programs for Nevada’s community.

For 125 years, the Library never changed its mission. The library is dedicated to preserving a link between the present and the past, and to providing the tools with which the future may be built.

Nevada Public Library joined Missouri Evergreen in September of 2023! Joining the statewide consortium of over 60 public libraries means that cardholders at NPL have access to nearly 5 million items! Visitors and members have access to many services including 11 public computers, free Wi‐Fi, fax/scanning/copy equipment, and Interlibrary loan. Cardholders may also borrow materials from NPL’s ‘digital branch’ that includes a vast collection of e‐books, digital magazines, and audiobooks for mobile devices. The Genealogy Research Center is located in the library with an impressive collection of local history documents and family research resources.

Programs such as Preschool Storytime, S.T.E.A.M. & Lego Builders Club for elementaryaged children, Teen gaming and crafting clubs, Winter & Summer Reading challenges for all ages, Family literacy & learning events, and Adult computer and hobby programs are offered throughout the year. Events for all ages are posted on the library’s website calendar and promoted through the library’s social media pages and local media outlets. The library also has spaces for quiet study, a community meeting room, and a MakerSpace learning lab/classroom.

THINGS TO DO Nevada Griffons

>> NEVADA GRIFFONS – THEN AND NOW

In 1984 a group of Nevada businessmen came together to discuss how to create and maintain a collegiate baseball program in Vernon Country. Planning and fundraising began, and the Nevada Baseball Club was born. A contest was held to find a name, and the Sportswriter for the local newspaper came up with the name Griffons. In his winning entry, he wrote….”Griffons is a natural nickname for a Nevada baseball team when you realize that it’s a combination of Griffith and Lyons, Nevada’s two well-known big league baseball players. Clark C. Griffith began his life here and saw it end somewhere else. George Lyons began his life somewhere else and closed it here. Somewhere between, both realized the ultimate dream of pitching in the major leagues. Lyons pitched for the St. Louis Browns and St. Louis Cardinals, and spent some time on the rosters of other big league teams. He, along with Ban Johnson, founded the American League. With his pitching career on the wane, Griffith joined with Johnson and Charles Comiskey to co-found the American League. As manager of the Chicago White Sox he won the first pennant in American League history in 1901. After retiring from professional baseball, Lyons spent a great deal of time working with the game on a local level, as evidenced by the fact that George Lyons Stadium bears his name.”

The Nevada Griffons played their first game at Lyons Stadium in the summer of 1985 as a member of the Jayhawk League. They enjoyed great success and most seasons culminated with a trip to the NBC (National Baseball Congress) World Series event in Wichita, KS. Nevada has been to the NBC 22 times with top 10 finishes 18 of those times. Mounting travel costs forced the Griffons to leave the Jayhawk League in 2009, joining with several other teams from that league as well as some newcomers to form the MINK League.

Today, the MINK League consists of nine teams. Besides the Griffons, the South Division is made up of the Joplin Outlaws, Sedalia Bombers and the Jefferson City Renegades. The North Division consists of the Des Moines Peak Prospects, Carroll (IA) Merchants, St. Joseph Mustangs, Chillicothe Mudcats and the Clarinda (IA) A’s. Each team is operated in a similar manner to a professional minor league team, providing players an opportunity to play under the same conditions using wooden bats and minor league specification baseballs, experiencing overnight road trips and playing nightly before fans in a stadium. Each summer, the Nevada community welcomes another group of collegiate players to their town. Players come from all over the United States to live with local families for a few months, hone their skills and play the game they love. Lyons Stadium is located on Highland Ave just west of North Ash street. We hope to see you at the ball park this summer!

THINGS TO DO Osage Valley STATE HISTORIC SITE

Osage Indians were first recorded in 1673 by explorers Louis Joliet and Jacques Marquette. The overall territory that the Osage Indian tribe would come to claim was vast. It included what is now southern Missouri, Arkansas, eastern Kansas and Oklahoma, with principal villages located in western Missouri where the streams known today as the Marmaton, Little Osage and Marais des Cynges come together to form the Osage River in Vernon and Bates counties. One particular village of Osage Indians lived on a high, open hilltop near the Osage River that is now preserved as the Osage Village State Historic Site.

At its height, the village contained 2,000 to 3,000 people and about 200 lodges. The everyday hustle and bustle of life in the village included the planting of gardens of corn, squash, and beans, and hunting for bison, bear, elk and deer. They

gathered fruit and fished in the nearby rivers and oxbow lakes. Pottery, weapons, and tools excavated from the site have provided information about the daily lives of the villagers. From the late 18th to the early 19th century, the Osage accounted for over half of the total trade in furs on the Missouri River.

After the United States government took control of the Louisiana Purchase territory in 1804, American settlers demanded protection from the Osage. In 1808 and 1825, the Osage signed treaties, giving up all of present-day Missouri and parts of Arkansas, Kansas, and Oklahoma. In 1872, they traded their remaining Kansas lands for the present reservation in Oklahoma. Despite a long history of losing homelands and cultural traditions, the Osage tribe in Oklahoma is today a thriving and prosperous nation.

1) THE LAST BIG OSAGE VILLAGE

Between 1775 and 1823, the Big Osage occupied another village to the west. This second and last Big Osage village in Missouri lay about five miles ahead between the two hills you see.

2)

ARCHAEOLOGICAL EXCAVATIONS

Excavations conducted in 1962 and 1963 revealed two large houses in the area before you. Archaeologists believe one of these was a ceremonial lodge and the other was a typical dwelling.

3) MANUEL LISA’S POST

At the northern end of Timber Hill, which is visible in the distance, stood Manuel Lisa’s post. The post was built in 1802 at the confluence of the Little Osage and Marmaton rivers between the Big Osage and Little Osage villages.

Through excavations at the site over the years, archaeologists have learned that the houses and ceremonial lodges were rectangular – 30 to 50 feet long and about 15 to 20 feet wide, with doorways that faced east. They were constructed of wood frames covered with rush mats, bark or buffalo skins. In 1971, the site was listed in the National Register of Historic Places.

Today, the Osage Village State Historic Site features a walking trail and outdoor exhibits that help visitors to imagine the daily activities at this once-thriving Indian village. Various interpretive stops along the trail allow visitors to visualize the relationship of this site to other nearby Osage and early European sites that once existed on distant hillsides.

Osage Village State Historic Site Farm Road 2300 l Walker, MO 64790

Walking Tour

Visualize the once-thriving Indian village and the surrounding area as it was on your walk to interpretive stops along the site’s trail. The information listed to the left corresponds with numbers on the historic site map.

LITTLE OSAGE VILLAGE

About two miles past the Little Osage River stood the Little Osage village, occupied from the 1780s until 1823.

4) BLUE MOUND

The large hill before you is Blue Mound. Osage lore says that a number of prominent chiefs, including Pawhuska (White Hairs), were buried there.

Harmony Mission and Fort Osage Factory

Between 1821 and 1827, a Christian mission occupied a site about three miles from the confluence of the Marais des Cygnes and Osage rivers. Just down river was the site of a factory, or trading post, which operated from 1821 until about 1826 under the supervision of Fort Osage.

5) UTILIZED BEDROCK OUTCROP

Notice the two pecked depressions, which probably resulted from Osage woman cracking nuts, and two grooves for making bone tools.

6) AMERICAN SETTLEMENT

Americans were slow to settle this area even after the Osage left the state. E.T. Smith, the first settler here, came shortly after the Civil War. His house stood here until well into the 20th century.

7) BEDROCK FEATURES

Notice the bedrock outcrops in this area of the site. Signs of use by the Osage include bedrock mortars, small depressions from cracking nuts, grooves from sharpening bone tools and broad grooves from sharpening axes.

8)

FORT CARONDOLET

About five miles away, the Chouteau family of St. Louis built Fort Carondolet on the Osage River in 1795. It is probable that the fort burned after Manuel Lisa took over the Chouteau’s trade monopoly in 1802.

9) THE OSAGE VILLAGE

Imagine this site in 1774, when 2,000 to 3,000 people lived in about 200 lodges. The hilltop would have been worn bare by horses grazing, men and women working, and children playing. Skins drying on the ground or on frames, and meat and food drying on racks would have been everywhere. The hustle and bustle common during the Osage’s residence here was quite different from the peaceful setting you see today.

10) WATER

A stream from one of the springs that supplied water for the village ran through this ravine. Shortage of water may have been part of the reason for the tribe’s move to the Late Big Osage village about 1775.

Most churches are also active in the community, helping to create a caring and compassionate environment in which to live and support our neighbors.

The Ministerial Alliance is a fellowship of clergy from various Churches in Vernon County who have diverse theological views but who have found it beneficial for the Churches and the community to gather for fellowship and to share information. The Ministerial Alliance meets monthly. This spirit of collaboration is conducive to creating a strong community.

PLACES Vernon County Courthouse

Vernon County, Missouri was organized on February 27, 1855 and is named for Miles Vernon, a three-time Missouri Senator from Laclede County. In the same year commissioners bought 50 acres for $250 as the site of the county seat. The county seat was first called Fairview; later the name became Nevada City. Now known as just Nevada, it is geographically located in the center of the county.

The first courthouse was completed in 1857. The upper story was used for county offices and the lower floor held the courtroom and was also available for religious services of all denominations. This building was located one block west of the public square. Appropriations of $900 were made for construction of the building which measured 28 feet by 18 feet with the first story nine feet high, the second story seven feet. This building was burned with the rest of the town by Federal troops on May 26, 1863. For lack of a suitable building in Nevada, the first post-war sessions of the County Court were held at Little Osage.

The second courthouse was built in the center of the Nevada City square in 1868. The final costs totaled approximately $25,000. The 50-by-60-foot brick building had a 15-foot tower that rose from a 10-foot base. The building faced south. In time it deteriorated and was sold and razed in 1906.

The present Vernon County Courthouse was completed in 1908. The threestory, Carthage limestone, Romanesque Revival style building measures 80 by 100 feet and rises to 126 feet at the top of the dome. It was the first courthouse built in Missouri after the Civil War and for a time, viewed as the finest in this part of the state.

The original call for bids stated: “…that the said building be of a size to meet the wants and needs of Vernon County for fifty years. The size must not be so large as to sacrifice quality to size, that it should be proportionate to the perspective of the square, that said building complete shall not exceed the cost of $75,000.” During construction, rapidly rising costs caused alterations to be made to the original plans.

An example of materials substitution was the change made to the main staircase from marble and iron to quarter-sawed oak. In actuality the final costs for the courthouse amounted to almost $80,000.

Our Courthouse was placed on the National Registry of Historic Places on June 27, 1997. A life-size bronze statue, erected by the State of Missouri, was dedicated on the Courthouse lawn in Nevada in 1935 to the memory of William Joel Stone, a Vernon Countian who served Missouri as a Congressman, Governor, and United States Senator. From 1872 to 1874 he also served as Prosecuting Attorney for Vernon County.

LEADERSHIP of Vernon County

Joe Wilson - Presiding Commissioner

What is your favorite aspect of Vernon County and Why?

There are two things I most appreciate about Vernon County. First is the diversity of our countryside. In the north portion of the county, we have a conflux of rivers, flood plains and marshes. The west portion of the county was mostly prairie, now rich farmland, some very flat and other areas are rolling hills. And the southeast portion of the county is rocky with lots of oak and walnut trees. I don’t know where anyone would find another county with so much variety of topography.

Secondly, I have always been fascinated with the history of Vernon County. Vernon County was home to the Osage Tribe of Native American Indians. Zebulon Pike’s expedition followed the Marmaton River across Vernon County in route to Colorado and his discovery of Pike’s Peak. Of course, our county is rich in Civil War history; pre-war border struggles with Kansas, bushwackers, Order Eleven and ultimately the burning of Nevada. The history of Vernon County is truly inspiring.

Cindy Thompson - Northern Commissioner

What is your favorite aspect of Vernon County and Why?

“Vernon County is a proud agricultural community: Livestock, crops, pecans, produce and conservation land. Agriculture plays a crucial role in the life of our economy. Agriculture not only provides food and raw material but also employment opportunities to a very large proportion of our population.”

John Shorten - Southern Commissioner

What is your favorite aspect of Vernon County and Why?

My favorite aspect of our county is that it sits on 2 major crossroads I49 and Highway 54. This makes it easy access to north, south, east and west travels that helps with community development, however, we are also small enough that people are friendly.

LEADERSHIP of Vernon County

George Knox - Mayor of the City of Nevada

George has a doctorate in Higher Education Administration, Masters in Criminal Justice Administration and a Bachelors in Criminal Justice. George spent 15 years in Law Enforcement in Hollywood, FL and then 30 years in Higher Education. He and his wife, Carol, retired to Nevada, MO in July 2017. George is currently on the Nevada City Council and serving as Mayor and serving as pastor at Rich Hill United Methodist Church.

What is your favorite aspect of Vernon County and Why?

Our people are the very best! Their willingness to engage and provide solutions for our future.

Miranda Selby - City of Nevada Councilwoman

Miranda Clark-Selby was born in Wichita, KS, and raised in Russell, KS. She attended McPherson College on a cross country/track scholarship, where she earned her Bachelor’s degree in Sociology (2016). After undergrad, Clark-Selby attended law school at the University of Kansas, graduating in 2019. ClarkSelby started a photography business in 2012. She met her husband David, a photographer/videographer, and they now own and operate Selby Films and Photos. Clark-Selby works for Curtis & Sons Inc. as a real estate agent. She and her husband moved to Nevada in May of 2021. They have two children and are expecting a third in July of 2025.

Carol Branham - City of Nevada Councilwoman

I have lived in Nevada with my husband and we have raised our three children here. I have a combined 47 years of public and volunteer service working at different levels at the county (Newton), city (Nevada) and housing authority (Nevada). I am committed to our community and love to volunteer. I am one to always part of a solution to any issue or concern. I believe in creating a great vision and moving our community forward.

What is your favorite aspect of Vernon County?

Our community is resilient. The ability shown by this community to cooperate and collaborate for what’s best for our community is to be applauded. A small rural community has its challenges. We have the ability to turn those challenges into opportunities. We must provide leadership development and embrace healthy change and move forward in a positive direction. I love “Why not?” vs. “We can’t.”

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE ASPECT OF VERNON COUNTY AND

WHY?

That is why I enjoy being a part of Vernon County. I want to be involved in the community to help Vernon county to grow and prosper.
