“Somewhere over the rainbow, way up high, There’s a land that I heard of once in a lullaby..” There are no words of Latin or Greek root meaning that best express my personal feelings of gratitude and appreciation for the many connections made during my mother’s illness and eventual passing at the end of February of this year. To those who dropped by and checked in with a visit, who sent cards, notes, and text messages, who kept abreast of my mother’s life’s happenings as they happened, thank you for your generosity and for taking the time before, during, and after her passing. Your support lifted her and myself during an incredibly difficult time. She was as touched as I was by your sweet messages of love and encouragement; words that served as a powerful reminder that we are never alone in our pain and grief.

On a more personal note, I myself want to acknowledge the following for their many kindnesses and gifts:

Dr. Fox, Dr. Dodd, Dr. DeHoyos, the nurses, aides, other healthcare professionals, and staff at NRMC; Karen Clark and the staff at the Joe Clark Senior Assistive Care Facility; The nurses, aides, and staff at Medicalodge of NeMO; Dr Parkhurst, Dr Mustafa, and the many other healthcare professionals from multiple disciplines and departments at KU Medical Center; Twila’s NHS graduating Class of 1960, all of whom she held in high regard and with whom she shared lifetime friendships that meant the world to her; My mother’s sorority sisters/friends of Beta Sigma Phi, where her 50+ year chapter membership was as much a testament to her devotion to the group’s mission as it was her love and appreciation for women who were instrumental in her growth and development as a woman and mother; The members of Sheldon Christian Church and Pastor Colton Cockburn for the many gifts of service and ministry given to me, my mother, and my brothers, be it food, meals, time, attention, visits, and prayers; The Vernon County Democrat Party where my mother’s personal ideology and values aligned with so many members with whom she shared common interests, hopes, and goals; The staff at Stutesman Action Reality who provided food served at my mother’s family visitation meal, as well as personal comfort to my extended family with whom they work and know as colleagues and friends; My mother’s many loved ones that include her Aunt Karen Brooks, her sister Renee Hampton, her sister-in-law Rebecca Arthur and family, her brother-in-law Joseph Earll and family, her many cousins and their families throughout Missouri and Oklahoma including Phyllis, Delila, Delores, Donna, Phillip, Debbie, Alan, Randy, Jan, Jill, and Ross, my brothers and their families, her many nieces and nephews, her wonderful neighbors of Brookridge Estates, and longtime family friends that include Michele Lawrence, Zanetta Campbell, Norma Griggs Cory, members of my late father’s graduating Class of 1954, Teresa Palmer Brewer, Colleen Doherty and her 6 brothers and sisters, Susan Hartman Lanphier, Cynthia Wood Warner and her children Paul, Nina, and Mary, Pauletta Lechmann, Jan Parrish, Barbara Fortney, Gene and Eileen Leininger, Tracy Jones Ellifrits, Mike Jones, Jim and Vickie Erwin, Rick and Geri McInroy, Tina Stafford, Fred and Katie Pettibon, Joyce, King, Judy Baker, and Gilbert and Eleanor Willson among many many others; and lastly, David Ferry and staff at Ferry Funeral Home for everything they selflessly do for families like my own who must navigate our loved one’s final wishes and see that it’s done with compassion and empathy.

I was so deeply and incredibly moved by the outpouring of support as I navigated my mother’s illness with resolve. This support brought me tremendous comfort in this time of heartache and loss. I’m comforted knowing that my mother touched so many people’s lives and hearts and that she will be remembered for her joyful spirit, generosity, love and kindness, and being a source of strength for all of her loved ones.

Again, my thanks.

Melissa “Missy Joy” Earll “Somewhere over the rainbow, bluebirds fly, Birds fly over the rainbow, why then oh why can’t I?”
