Lorraine Benuto began her career at the University in 2009 as a postdoctoral fellow working for the Victims of Crime Treatment Center providing free, evidence-based therapy in English and Spanish to women and children who had experienced severe trauma and abuse. Soon after joining the Department of Psychology’s faculty in 2016, Benuto founded La Cliníca, a specialty clinic offering free mental health services to Latinas who have experienced domestic violence, assault, or sexual abuse. La Cliníca helped to fill a void in Nevada by providing access to bilingual mental health services, economically accessible care, and by promoting mental health literacy within the Latinx community.

In addition to her outreach and service efforts at the University and in the local community, Benuto’s research on culturally tailored evidence-based psychotherapies for Latinx individuals has become some of the most cited in the field. As part of her research efforts, Benuto and her research team developed a video to help reduce stigma toward behavioral healthcare in the Latinx community.

Benuto has also used La Cliníca and her role at the University to recruit and train nearly two dozen graduate students, many of whom are Latinx, in culturally sensitive psychological services. More recently, Benuto developed and launched Psychology Research Opportunities for Underrepresented and Diverse students (PROUD), a program that provides professional development and research opportunities to help undergraduate students become competitive applicants for graduate school.
“The fluttering of quaking aspen leaves in the wind. The smell of a subalpine forest at dawn. The taste of a freshlypicked huckleberry. The skin-tingling sensation of jumping into a frigid alpine lake. The awe of viewing a glacier calve. These moments bring peace and connection and breathe life into me—experiences I never imagined could be mine during my childhood in Chicago, where exposure to the natural world was a beach day on the urban shores of Lake Michigan. At 19, a trip with friends to a handful of western national parks gave me my first glimpse into both the tranquility but also the curiosity that evolves from time spent exploring natural ecosystems. I am inherently inquisitive, independent, and, as an ambitious individual, thrive when exposed to slower, quieter, calming experiences. The natural world proved to be a perfect match for these traits and for my insatiable need to adventure, explore, and investigate. And, once introduced to the wild and rugged forests of the West, I was hooked. I have spent every possible day since exploring, learning, observing, and experimenting in forests from Alaska to California and into the Rocky Mountains. In these pursuits, I aspire to understand the processes driving the patterns we observe in forest composition and structure and to identify the fate of these patterns and processes in the face of a rapidly changing climate. I work at the intersection of theoretical and applied ecology, using well-established concepts to influence the management and conservation of forest ecosystems. We, as forest ecologists and managers, are using the knowledge gained over the last few decades of climate change and altered disturbance regimes to act, to build resilience into our forest ecosystems, and to sustain the goods and services we all so value in our forests. I may speak for the trees, but I do it for your children and mine.”

“The movie The Matrix shows a scary virtual world formed by digital data streams, but isn’t it cool to have a data stream reflecting all the details of our traffic world that we can use to save lives, time, and energy? That is what I do with my research on roadside LiDAR networks. I had heard about LiDAR sensors, a major component of autonomous vehicles for high-accuracy spatial point measurement data, but it had been too expensive —more like tools for rich companies or programs. A price of only $8,000 was the threshold price for my research program and an acceptable price for roadside traffic sensing systems. It was the moment that I have prepared myself for many years and it suddenly happened. Yes, the data is beautiful, unique, accurate, and full of details. I was happy — even a bit crazy with glee — when I opened the data file from the first roadside test. I guess it’s like when the protagonist of The Matrix saw the raw data flow of his virtual world for the first time. At that moment, I knew that the sensor data would change transportation engineering a lot! Moving LiDAR sensors from vehicles to roadside infrastructure is the silver bullet for traffic data and information. It generates the data stream of our real world with fantastic detail and accuracy. In 2017, we set up the world’s first LiDAR-equipped, smart-andconnected intersection in Reno, Nevada. In 2019, we implemented the world’s first LiDAR-controlled pedestrian crossing signal, the first real-time traffic signal system controlled by cloud point sensing data. In 2021, the University and Velodyne LiDAR published the first-in-class white paper that demonstrates the ability of LiDAR sensors to make transportation infrastructure more efficient, sustainable, and safe.”

Vazquez also took a course in epigenetics which piqued her interest with the idea that environment, behaviors and nutrition could change how a person’s genes work. She describes it as “coding on top of our genetics” that can be passed down from one generation to another.”
The more she learned about the importance of gut flora, the more she refined her nutrition, adopting a whole-foods plant-based diet that she still follows today.Inher final year as an undergraduate, Vazquez connected with Ranna Nash and the two launched an initiative which became the Culinary Medicine Curriculum Committee (CMCC).
I 22
Tasha Vazquez, graduate of the College of Science and third-year medical student at the University of Nevada, Reno School of Medicine, exudes the confidence and warmth characteristic of a seasoned physician. As an undergraduate biology major, she not only discovered her passion for culinary medicine and adopted a plant-based diet, but helped launch the Culinary Medicine Curriculum Committee currently implemented at the medical school. During her undergraduate studies, this firstgeneration student found support and community as a TRiO Scholar and enrolled in the medical school’s Post-Baccalaureate early assurance admission program to create a clear path to medical school.
“Most of the courses from the CMCC are cooking workshops,” Vazquez said. “They begin with a 15-20-minute presentation, and then proceed with cooking workshops in which the students prepare the food and taste it. That way, when they are having conversations with their patients in the future, it’s coming from a very real place, it’s coming from an understanding of what’s realistic for patients to be able to do at home, what tastes good and what’s realistic for them to adopt into their lifestyles and diets.”The CMCC hopes to expand the program, eventually offering similar courses designed for the generalOncepopulation.aphysician, Vazquez’s career will serve as a testament to the success of the program she helped to create.
Soon, Nash and Vazquez were joined by a pediatrician, a registered dietician and several other students. In her first year of medical school, Vazquez was helping to implement the now official curriculum at the medical school by leading hands-on workshops.
“That was one of the subjects that lead me toward rethinking my relationship with food and nutrition,” Vazquez said. She followed that curiosity with additional research and discovered the subject of gut microbiome. “These are, in the order of billions, bugs on the inside of your digestive tract. One of the number one things they eat is cellulose which is what makes up the majority of plants. Nuts, seeds, legumes, fruits, vegetables—when you eat those you, in turn, feed your gut microbiome which play an enzymatic role in just about every system in your body.”
