Where the Truckee’s snowfed waters, Drop from mountain’s crest, And the meadows meet the sagebrush, By the sun caressed.
Cradled by the silver mountains, ‘Neath the western blue, Stands our noble Alma Mater, Our Nevada U.
As the miner on the desert, Prospects ev’ry place, So Nevada seeks the future With an upturned face.
Ev’rywhere she gathers knowledge, All that’s good and true, Gives she to her sons and daughters, Of Nevada U.
We will ever live to serve her, Live to give our best, Live to make our Alma Mater Pride of all the West. Let her praises wake the echoes, While we pledge anew, Hearts and minds and hands and voices To Nevada U.
Several songs have served as the Nevada alma mater over the years, including “Beside the Waters of the Truckee,” “U of N So Gay” and “Nevada, My Nevada.” The current alma mater, “Mackay Song,” with words by Jack H. Morse, came into use circa 1955, although its official adoption date is unknown. The earliest version of “Mackay Song” in print was included in the 1924 University Songbook.

THE PROMISE OF HISTORY 1925
Commencement Ceremony
100 years ago featured a major announcement, and several University firsts
1925 was an important year for the University of Nevada. Over the course of the previous year, the University celebrated the 50th anniversary of its founding in 1874. Longtime University benefactor Clarence Mackay in spring 1924 announced that he and his family would be donating approximately $700,000 to build the University’s endowment, provide further investment in the Mackay School of Mines Building and for the construction of a new science building for the teaching of physics, chemistry and mathematics. One year later, in 1925, University President Walter Clark was determined to capitalize on the momentum created by the record-setting gift from the Mackay family.
Clark, an Ohioan who had taught economics and business at City College of New York for 15 years, was appointed as the University’s fifth president in 1918. His goal throughout the 20 years he served as president was to prove whenever possible the University’s value to the state. 1925 was a great example of how the white-haired, well-spoken Clark went about doing this. England, with colonial-based monopolies on many natural resources, had a particularly advantageous
position leading the world’s rubber industry in 1925. Clark mobilized the Nevada Experiment Station to look into the rubber content in a state plant, rabbit brush. It was one of the first examples of the University working to solve a global problem. When the senior members of the Class of 1925 were looking for a prominent place for their gift to the University – a circular stone bench – Clark ensured it was given prominence, and gave the OK to locate it near the entrance to the University’s grounds overlooking the University lake. If people literally needed to see the product of what the University was producing – an educated workforce – this 1925 bench would be one of the first things to greet them as they visited the University.
By May 1925, Clark had a major announcement planned, and made it during the May 13 Commencement ceremony — a $2,000 scholarship that would be awarded to a Nevada high school graduate. The scholarship would be based on high school record and the promise the individual demonstrated “as a useful citizen of the state and community,” the Reno Evening Gazette reported.

The scholarship, the first of its kind in that it specifically targeted rising Nevada high school students, could in some ways be considered the forerunner of the Millennium Scholarship, introduced by Nevada Gov. Kenny Guinn in 1999 to a much wider swath of backgrounds of deserving Nevada students which revolutionized the state’s higher education system in the early 2000s. Although Clark’s scholarship – funded by an anonymous donor – was a single
scholarship, the effort to bring more attention to what the University had to offer the students of Nevada seemingly began to work. The following fall, the University reached a record enrollment of 837 students, 590 of whom were from Nevada. In a September 1925 interview with the Nevada State Journal, Clark said: “Approximately 590 youth from the Nevada population of about 77,500 is a high ratio, possibly the highest in the Union to be shown in publicly supported colleges or universities.” He added proudly that the increase was “nothing short of remarkable.”
Commencement 1925 was remarkable in other ways, too. It marked the largest graduating class in University history – 87 students. And in a rarity for the time, a University student graduated in three years. Leota Maestretti, 17, who was born in Austin but raised in Reno, earned that distinction

following a whirlwind three years that saw her earn a bachelor of arts degree as well as a special diploma to teach high school. A member of Pi Beta Phi sorority, Maestretti was well known throughout Reno as a violinist. Maestretti, who at 17 was too young to legally teach in Nevada, would pursue graduate studies in music at the University of California in Berkeley and later at the University. As she grew of age, she did teach, music at Sparks High School and Northside Junior High School in Reno before becoming a court reporter. Leota’s love of music never left her — she was a member of Reno Musicians Union 368 and was one of the first people to ever perform live on one of Reno’s first radio stations, KOH. She was married to Embree Raiford (Class of ’36) for nearly 30 years when she died at age 64 in 1971.
1925’s Herz Gold Medal recipient was Alice Norcross of Reno It marked the second straight year a female student earned the distinction of having the highest scholastic standing among that year’s graduating class (Nevada Semenza of Reno was the 1924 recipient).
Norcross’ uncle was Frank Norcross, a member of the University’s three-person first graduating class of 1891 and later a federal judge. She was a staff member of all three of the campus’ student publications — yearbook, arts publication and newspaper — was a member of the women’s field hockey, rifle, basketball and tennis teams, and belonged to the English honor society as well as Pi Beta Phi sorority.
Alice won the award after overcoming being hit by an automobile and striking her head on a sidewalk on the University campus the previous September. She married Lt. William Organ, a graduate of the Naval Academy, in New York City in August 1929 and
returned to live in Reno during World War II while her husband, who would eventually become a rear admiral, served in the Pacific Theater. She chaired Pi Beta Phi’s 75th anniversary celebration on campus during this time. Alice passed along a love of lifetime learning to her three children. Wrote her daughter Perry, a longtime English teacher in the Wellesley University alumni magazine, “Art has been a grounding force for me – painting, music, literature, the lot.”
For all the history that was made that day, the day itself was drab and dreary. The morning ceremony was held in driving rainfall “that soaked the grounds,” the Reno Evening Gazette reported. The rain was so hard the annual processional, where the graduates would gather on the University Quadrangle at the steps of Morrill Hall and then march along with faculty and administration to the University’s Gymnasium, was cancelled. Those in attendance — which reportedly was much greater than the year before — were enthusiastic as Clark made his announcement and degrees were conferred.
Wrote the editorial board of the Nevada State Journal about the 1925 ceremony: “Yesterday some 87 boys and girls at the University of Nevada were graduated from that institution with pomp and circumstance befitting that epoch in their careers. Slowly and by degrees they have been advanced in wisdom and learning and now for the first time they really commence to live.”

RALPH BURNS
Numu Elder Ralph Burns has played a pivotal role in ensuring that the language, culture and traditions of the Numu (Northern Paiute) people is passed on through future generations to both Native American and nonNative American individuals. After serving in the Vietnam War, Burns returned to Pyramid Lake where he perfected the powwow dances of his people and has been leading them throughout the State of Nevada since. Burns serves as the Cultural Resource Specialist for the Pyramid Lake Paiute Museum and Cultural Center.
Burns has given many Indigenous blessings at major events at the University, such as Commencement, the New Student Opening Ceremony, and the State of the University. He has become a cornerstone of the University experience, enriching the time of each student, staff, faculty, alumni and community members who attend University events.
Burns has also been an influential figure on campus as a highly respected Paiute Language teacher, serving as an instructor in the Department of World Languages and Literatures. He began teaching the Northern Paiute I course at the University in 2019 and has expanded his curriculum and coursework significantly since. Additionally, he teaches Paiute Language courses at the Reno-Sparks Indian Colony. In 2011, Burns received the Nevada Heritage Award for his work advancing the culture of the Northern Paiute people.

MARILYN NEWTON
Marilyn Newton’s award-winning and groundbreaking career as a Nevada photojournalist spanned 52 years, officially starting in 1963 but actually beginning a few years before that. Hired at age 12 by the Carson City Nevada Appeal as a papergirl, Newton had her first story (a two-paragraph sports story) published at the age of 12 and her first photo published just a year later. After graduating from Carson High School in 1962, Newton attended the University of Nevada and was hired by the Reno Evening Gazette after just one semester. Within two weeks she wrote her first front page story and within six months she was a photojournalist for the paper. Over her career she has won close to 400 national, regional and state awards and earned one Pulitzer nomination. In 1992 she was named Nevada Photographer of the year by Shooting the West. In 2002 she was inducted into the Nevada Newspaper Hall of Fame and also won the national media award by the National Leukemia Society for her photos of a childhood cancer cluster.
Newton was named an honorary colonel in the Nevada National Guard in 2005. In 2022 she was inducted into the Women of Achievement Hall of Fame. Countless photos of Newton’s have been donated to the University of Nevada and are stored in Special Collections.

The Board of Regents established the Regents’ Academic Advising Award in 1998. This award honors outstanding academic student advising with one award granted to a community college advisor and two awards granted to advisors at the state college or universities.
