Fascinating "Pupillometry" and the ability to Measure Pupil Size during the Examination

Patients with TBIs are often evaluated using a neurological pupil index. The NPI evaluates how much a patient's pupils dilate in reaction to light. Researchers have shown that the NPI may help doctors diagnose brain injuries. The Neurological Pupil Index (NPI) is a helpful tool for the pupil evaluation of patients with traumatic brain injuries, and this article will explain why and how clinicians might use it.

The Importance of the Pupil Examination The size and light response of the patient's pupils are evaluated using the neurological pupil index. Patients with traumatic brain injuries (and others) should have a pupil diameter measurement regularly since the same processes that cause brain damage may also harm the pupil. Due to this, the way the pupils react to light may occasionally provide information about the extent of brain injury. In individuals with traumatic brain injuries, the reaction of the pupils might vary widely. Their responses might range from dilating to constricting to slowing to complete inactivity.
