From the President Melinda Cagle 2019 was a great year for First Settlers. We celebrated our 60th Anniversary throughout the year. We completed our Habitat for Humanity House and held the dedication. This achievement was key to our selection for the 2019 Public Service Award. We also won Best Website award. We worked with our two Porsche dealerships Checkered Flag and Euroclassics to hold tech sessions and other events for our members. We learned just how popular fun runs are with our members. Limiting participation to fit the restaurant is a wonderful problem to have. We tried our first vintage touring group and it was a hit! Members came simply to admire the wonderful collection of vintage Porsche. We held two successful DEs. We also made a couple changes to FSR President Melinda Cagle help make FSR feel smaller to our members. We expanded use of social media to allow our members to share their Porsche enthusiasm. We also expanded our use of email to keep members informed on Club activities and to allow easy registration to events. Also, PCA began their Sim Racing series and FSR had two members finish atop the podium. 2019 was a great year for membership growth. While many marque clubs are experiencing flat or decreasing membership, PCA continues to grow. First Settlers is contributing to that success. We closed out the year at 727 households and 5.1% growth. This exceeds both the PCA national average (4.3%) and Zone 2 average (3.3%). The 2020 activities calendar is shaping up to be even better. There is something for everyone! You can check out the FSR 2020 Activities Calendar in this publication or refer to our website fsrpca.org/calendar. The best way to receive the latest event information is to read the FSR E-News email. During busy periods of the year, I produce FSR ENews once per week to share news and pictures from events. Each member and co-member can receive these email updates. If you are not receiving FSR E-News, verify your email address on file with PCA and your “Region Email” subscription status. Looking further out to September, the Treffen Greenbrier is a must-do event. First Settlers is partnering with Shenandoah and Potomac regions to host this National event. The list of activities will be released mid-May with registration opening 17 June. Treffens generally sell out in minutes so mark your calendar. Your FSR Board of Directors is hard at work planning fun events throughout the Region. I encourage all of you to come out and join us or, even better, volunteer! Here’s to a great 2020!

The Fun is Not Just in the Run

OUT

Written by Erik Apotheker

AND A BOUT

On February 1st, ten FSR members sat down to absorb the sage wisdom of how to plan a fun run. Our Tourmeister Ed Merry walked us through the process, procedures and imparted a few stories and humorous lessons learned. The Fun Run Workshop was designed to achieve several goals: showcase how fun it can be to plan a tour. Share great ride routes with fellow FSR members while ensuring that safety remains a high priority, and to prove that while the planning can be some work, it’s also not onerous. Ed has been delivering FSR members with many miles of smiles, and this year will certainly not disappoint. Current plans include at least 4 fun runs and another 3 drives have great “bones” but need further development. Not so subtle hint: maybe some of the new members who attended the workshop may want to try their hand at planning a route? Rumor has it that our area Vice Presidents Mike Ball and Phil Grandfield may also be working on some additional tours, so please keep a look out for new announcements. (Insert shameless plug here ->) Hopefully we can convince Ed to conduct more of these workshops and to get more members involved. Meanwhile, if you wish to volunteer to help with a fun run, or just have an idea, please do not hesitate to reach out to any of the club officers. I for one am excited to plan a fun run and seeing some additional ideas become available for the enjoyment of our members (pilot and co-pilot). Special thanks to Ed Merry for sharing his talents and experiences while proving, it not just the run that’s fun. See you out on tour! Please look for more information on our upcoming Fun Runs: Cabin Fever Bustout, March 28th John Carroll Daffodil Tour, April 4th Plantation Fun Run, April 25th

Greenbrier Treffen September 16 - 20, 2020 We need your help! The Potomac, First Settlers, Shenandoah Regions will be hosting the Fall 2020 “Treffen” at the historic Greenbrier Resort in West Virginia. As with every PCA event, Treffen requires volunteers to make it happen. What is Treffen? Treffen means ‘to meet” in German. That is the entire concept behind the PCA Treffen: an opportunity for PCA members to meet their fellow Porsche enthusiasts in some of the most spectacular locations in North America. Our three Regions were selected by PCA to host the Fall 2020 Treffen, now it’s our turn to show off the beautiful, scenic mountain roads of Virginia and West Virginia and the hospitality of the historic Greenbrier Resort. It is truly an honor to be selected host such a prestigious national event but we need your help to make it a success. Getting ready to host a Treffen requires many months of planning, dry runs for the tours, assembling of volunteers, meetings, and scheduling in order for us to execute a successful event. It is more complicated than a Region event and planners must consider other factors that they don’t normally consider. Keep in mind that Treffen is a short four days and we must make sure the participants get to make the most of their stay at the Greenbrier and talk about our the event for years to come. We are looking for more volunteers to help support this wonderful event. We are lucky enough to have recruited our tour teams already but we need your help in other areas. Registration and Information desk: Contact Pam Michaels -stuttgartpam@yahoo.com Registration - Wednesday evening from 3-7PM to check-in all the participants and give them their goodie bags. oil reaches the important parts of your engine. For this, we take a Magic School Bus trip. For those of you who don’t know what “The Magic School Bus” is, I’m sorry you missed out. It was a cartoon where Ms. Frizzle (the teacher) would load up her students into the Magic School Bus and go on impossible field trips. In some of the episodes, the Bus would shrink and they’d explore a microcosm. There was usually a problem or dangerous situation that would arise, but they always found a way out. I’m glad they always made it out. I’m not sure if I could have slept at night knowing Ms. Frizzle and the Bus were trapped somewhere. Anyhow, let’s explore our microcosm. You can use Figure 1 below to help imagine where we are going. For this example, our Magic School Bus is a particulate floating in the air in the left lane of the highway. A spirited driver comes blasting our way in a Porsche and we get sucked in. We make it past the engine air-filter and into the combustion chamber. Don’t worry; our Bus is equipped with an indestructible shield. The combustion cycle happens and we get pushed past the piston rings down into the crankcase. We bind with the oil in the crankcase and drain down into the oil pan. From there, the oil pump sucks us up and pushes us straight to the oil filter and this is where our field trip and particulate matter ends. You may be thinking, “But we’re trapped in the oil filter!” No worries, if you perform routine oil maintenance services, a Certified Porsche Technician will drain you out and we can resize and safely return to our families.

What a Dirty Mann By Joe Finkle Tech Chair Filter, that is. Mann + Hummel and Mahle are two of the main suppliers of air filters for Porsches, with BMC being the soul supplier for air filters in GT cars starting with the 9x1 chassis. In addition to air filters, Mann + Hummel and Mahle are also the main suppliers for oil filters.

Hopefully now you can see how a dirty air filter can potentially overload the oil filter. But wait, what’s stopping the particulates from getting past the filter? Much like the air filter, the oil filter achieves total mass filtration rates of up to 99.8% with the typical size of the particulates in the engine oil ranging from 0.5 to 500 μm. For reference, 0.01 μm is the size of one particle of smoke, 1 μm is the typical length of bacterium, 100 μm is the average diameter of a human hair, and 500 μm is the average length of a grain of sand. What is Porsches’ recommendation on air filter replacement? It goes back to the environment in which the vehicle is used. Porsche states, if there are a lot of pollutants in the air, it should be changed more often. They don’t define a time for that scenario, but I’d say every two years. Porsche does state that at the very most, the filter needs to be changed every four years. What is Porsches’ recommendation on oil filter replacement? Every time the oil gets changed, which I’d have to agree with after diving heavily into this topic. Thanks for reading along and I hope you enjoyed this article.

What else do air filters and oil filters have in common? If one doesn’t perform well it can affect the performance of the other. How so? I’m glad you asked! It starts with the function of the air filter. Engine air-intake filters reduce the particulates contained in the intake air that can be generated by abrasion and incomplete combustion or condensation processes. They can even be of natural origin in the form of organic and mineral dust. So how does that make it into my oil? We have to look at the amount of contaminants contained in the intake air for this answer. It depends heavily on the environment in which the vehicle is used. Typical air pollutants include oil mist, aerosols, diesel soot from jealous drivers “rolling coal” on your sports car (YouTube it), industrial waste gas, pollen, organic dust, exhaust gases from F-18 Super Hornets belting out the “sound of freedom”, and brake dust. That last one is especially true for any one who has a sports car, mainly the Boxster/Cayman crowd. Your intakes are directly in the path of the airflow down the side of the car behind the front brakes. Your engine is breathing that in and if you are tracking your car, it’s breathing a lot of that in. OK, but that doesn’t explain how it makes it into my oil. We’re getting there, but we also have to look at the size of the particulates. These particulates vary in size greatly. The particulates that are drawn in together with the intake air have a diameter of between 0.01 μm (mostly soot particles) and 2mm (sand grains). Approximately 75% of the particles are between 5 μm and 100 μm. Filter elements achieve total mass filtration rates of up to 99.8%. Over time the mass concentration accumulated in an air filter installed in a passenger car can range between a few grams to several kilograms. At some point the air filter becomes supersaturated with particulates. Like a sponge that can’t hold any more water, it works its way through. These particulates then make their way into the combustion chamber. In a perfect world the combustion chamber is perfectly sealed, but in reality there is some blow-by past the piston rings. That blow-by goes directly into the crankcase that contains your engine oil and that is the entry point for our pollutants. Oh no! My oil is contaminated now! No fear, the oil filter is here! Fortunately, the paths these pollutants take are filtered out before the HORIZONTALLY OPPOSED

first grade students in the Virginia Beach and Hampton Roads public schools. Last year, volunteers including those from our club, donated over 448 hours of time to this teacher supervised cause. If you have children or grandchildren looking for community service credit hours, this is a perfect opportunity.

2020 seems to already be sailing by and the New Year Party seems but a few shorts days ago. As we cast off the bowlines, or perhaps more appropriately the car covers and plan our spring excursions, the options are overwhelming. Over the past few months, we have been hard at work planning a selection of activities and events for your enjoyment. Whether a new member or an FSR veteran, I am confident we will present some old favorites and some new twists, while offering a great diversity of activities from east to west and back again.

Also be sure to keep an eye out for more information on a number of other events that are in the planning process and include • A Road Rallye to the Outer Banks • An informal meetup at the Breakthrough Car Show in Petersburg • Veterans Hospital community service outreach and Car Show • Caravan to Luftgekuhlt East • Tour and Tech Session at Dorn’s Body Shop in Mechanicsville • Annual Picnic (currently looking for a location – any ideas?)

So, grab your calendars and release your inner explorer. For those of you who enjoy the fun runs, Ed Merry and a team of volunteers are putting the finishing touches on a Cabin Fever Bust Out Tour which is sure to deliver a great drive for you and your prized stead. Mark your calendars for March 28th. On April 4th, if flowers are your thing or you just want a great photo-op, the 10,000 Daffodil Tour may be just what you were looking for. More information will be available in HO and in Melinda’s eblasts. If the Daffodil Tour is not for you, Josie Grandfield would love to have you join one of the annual community service events. First Settlers Region is 60 Years Old! by Phil Grandfield party and nearly 100 members agreed! Great music was provided by “Hot House” and the dance floor was busy most of the night. The buffet was excellent again this year but seemed to taste just a bit better at this gala!

Can you name the most significant events of 1959? In case you don’t remember, here is a short list: Dwight Eisenhower was the President, Alaska and Hawaii became the 49th and 50th States, the Boeing 707 came into service with Quantas in the first trans-Pacific jet service, Barbie Dolls were ‘born’, “Gigi” won the Oscar for Best Picture, Fidel Castro came to power in Cuba, NASA announced the names of the Mercury Seven astronauts, Buddy Holly was killed in a plane crash, and the aluminum beer can was introduced by Coors. The British Motor Corporation introduced the Mini, and the American Motors Corporation (AMC) was formed in a merger of Nash and Hudson. The first Daytona 500 was run. The average cost of a new car was $2,200 and a new house was $12,400. A gallon of gas cost a quarter. But the most important event to occur in 1959 was the establishment of the First Settlers Region of the Porsche Club of America!

John & Jane Carroll

Rather than our usual White Elephant auction, we added a twist this year with a focus on “Time & Talent” items offered by our members. A huge fan-favorite was the home-cooked Greek Feast offered by Pam and George Michaels and served at their house which we know from the photos on Facebook that is was a great success. It looked delicious! Eric and Jill Cruz donated a weekend at their trackside villa at VIR and the bidding was fierce. After they realized there was so much interest, The Cruz’s donated a second weekend! Mary Cook donated a personal chef experience in your home. In another example of charity, Mary decide donate two personal chef experiences! B y Diane Gifford & Diane Levendakes the end of the night when totals were tallied $7,160 was donated to our four charities. Thank you very much to everyone! First Settlers Region – YOU ROCK!

The Porsche Club of America was still in its infancy having been established only four years earlier. Thirteen car enthusiasts showed up for the first business meeting on September 13th, 1955 but one who owned a VW was asked to leave. The meeting was announced in a press release in the Porsche magazine, Christophorus, and the word spread. At the time of the second “Porsche Parade” in 1957 PCA had grown to 550 members in Joyce Worrall & Val Dru 21 Regions. The petition to form the our region was filed on March 31, 1959 by Allen Fine, who became the president when the charter for the “Richmond Region” was granted on April 22, 1959. The name was changed to The “First Settlers Region” in 1964 as the region grew to include counties in West Virginia. As membership grew, the Blue Ridge Region was split off in 1980, and the Shenandoah Region was formed in 1995.

The First Settlers Region has won some significant awards over the years and the hardware was on display at the 60th Anniversary. Our first national level recognition was being selected as Runner-Up for Region of the Year and the Best Website in 2011. We stepped to Richard Lance the top of the podium as Region of the Year in 2012 and have won the website award a couple more times with a podium nearly every year. We won third place the National Public Service Award in 2012 and 2017, and first place in 2013 and again in 2019! We’ve grown from 300 members in 1986, to 500 members in 2009 to over 700 members in 2019! Staying a viable club for 60 years doesn’t happen without the dedication of lots of people who have “made it happen” for six decades. And it’s not a party if no one shows up! Let’s keep it up and see you at the next gala!

The annual party in January 2020 was a great opportunity to celebrate the accomplishment of achieving a milestone as significant of a 60th Anniversary. We wanted to have a HORIZONTALLY OPPOSED

The Taycan Turbo has two permanent magnet synchronous motors, one in the front and one in the rear. Both motors have inverters to convert DC power from the battery pack to AC current for the motors.

There are two charging ports on the Taycan. Only one can be used at a time. The passenger side charging port can handle both AC and the high powered DC chargers. The driver side charger can only handle AC charging. The DC charger can handle up to 270 kWatt at 800 Volt chargers or up to 150 kWatt at 400 V DC chargers. The AC chargers are limited to 11 KWatt if you have a 240 V AC mode 3 line. Definition: A frunk is a front-loading trunk, or trunk in the front. A front trunk. Under the car, we see the protective covering for the front and rear axles had been removed. We could see the limited slip differential attached to the (unique to the Taycan) two speed rear transmission. The two speed transmission allows optimum low speed acceleration and top end speed. The front motor is always connected to the wheels. In some cases, the rear motor can be de-coupled, and the car run completely in front-wheel drive. The second gear ratio of the rear transmission has the same gear ratio as the motor driving the front wheels. The drive mode selected for the Taycan controls the gearshift strategy. In Range Mode, the Taycan rear transmission will run exclusively in second gear except for reversing. In Normal Mode, second gear is prioritized unless almost maximum torque is demanded. In Sport Mode, drive off is in first gear and the upshift point varies with

driving 996’s and 997’s for nearly a decade. Moreover, I still remember the first sweeping turn causing me to contemplate whether or not the car would slide across the road and into the adjacent ditch. It drew my immediate respect, and before I got home, I realized this was a car in which I’d have to invest time to learn. Unlike my 997S, this car had no power steering or brakes, PASM or PSM. The Honeymoon was in full swing with both love and respect in equal doses... Sound familiar, Guys? Haha.

A Porsche Restoration Story Part 2 - “The Honeymoon” by Kevin Pirkle [This article is the second in a series written regarding a complete rotisserie restoration of my 1973 911T.]

As if it were yesterday, I recall driving her home for the first time in December, 2013. I was convinced that the wheels were out of balance, though the shaking steering wheel could not erase I also dug in hard, attempting to learn the smile on my face as I rowed the as much about the history of this pargearbox along North Landing Road in ticular car. I called every owner listed Virginia Beach on my way home to on the accompanying service doc1973 911T next to the 2005 997S Great Bridge. I called John Kopp at uments and made a spreadsheet with RaceWerks with a heads up that I’d be contact info, dates of ownership, phone numbers and any parin for a good once over and to replace oil, check wheel bearings, ticular highlights I could uncover. Of particular note was the 2nd hoses, etc. We scheduled an appointment for a couple days later, owner, a wonderful lady by the name of Janna Stern, who I am and I finished the trip. This was a gentle drive, as this car had grateful to for taking the time to answer questions and share her been sitting for quite some time. While in Sam Gassel’s care for love of this car. She had wondered what had become of the car the previous three weeks, the car received an oil change, some and was thrilled to hear from me when I called. Janna owned the fuel injection adjustments, a new starter, and new engine mounts. car for nearly 30 years (1976-2005). Being Sepia brown, she Still, this car must certainly require some TLC before it could called it the Bear. When a friend surprised her by painting the really be driven. car Light Ivory for her in 2005, she then called it Polar Bear. Of

particular interest, Janna has worked in TV and Movies her entire career. She worked in Continuity, meaning she paid attention to all the details so that the scenes would be cut together event though they are shot out of order (sometimes weeks or months apart). If you’ve ever seen a guy walk into a room with a knife in his left hand, then snap to seeing him arrive from inside the room with the knife in his right hand, that’s a break in continuity. It’s a fascinating job, and Janna has led Script Supervision and Continuity for many movies…Batman Returns (1992), Apollo 13 (1995), Hostage (2005) and W. (2008) just to name a few! Of particular interest to me, however, growing up in the 1970’s, Janna was responsible for Continuity on the Dukes of Hazzard, starting in 1979. She drove this 911 to Georgia for the opening season, and the car was chased off the set of the Boar’s Nest many times…Janna was told there “weren’t any Porsches in Hazzard County!” Haha. Janna was a friend of Catherine Bach, and she even ended up driving the General Lee once when they were short one woman for stunts!

Within a couple of weeks, the car had received new plugs, air and fuel filters, cap and rotor, wiper blades, tires and a number of hoses & seals. The wheel bearings had been tightened, and the oil changed a second time for good measure. It was time to see what she would do, and I was amped to check it out. Leaving RaceWerks, I took North Landing again until I reached Fentress Airfield Road, one of my favorite beginnings to wonderful back roads through Chesapeake. I remember feeling like the car was fast. The windows were down, and the early 911’s mechanical fuel injection (MFI) engine sounded spectacular. And while the 0-60 mph time for this car from the factory was a mere 6.9 seconds (on par with a modern Honda Civic), the visceral pleasure of this car was so very different than that of my 997 Carrera S. The early 911 was light, and pushing it to 120 mph induced chassis lightness that was somewhat unnerving for a guy who’d been

During the Spring of 2014, I became comfortable with the car’s reliability, and I learned how to drive the car faster…what it liked and what it didn’t…when to keep my foot in the throttle and how to set the car up for a turn and keep things smooth. It was finally time to take the family on my long afternoon drives. As anyone who has owned an air-cooled 911 knows, most of them leak some oil, even if only a little. Mine was no exception, and the oil seemed to make its way to the heat exchangers, evoking memories of countless times I’d smelled oil burning off my father’s exhaust as a kid. I’m not sure my wife has the same memories, because when we stopped at the first light on Mount Pleasant Road and Centerville Turnpike, she asked what “that smell” was,

to admire, take pictures and peer inside. No gas station was safe either…and on hot days, my kids could be heard saying, “Daaaaaad!” when I was taking too long talking to the person who walked up to find out more about the car. After long drives alone in the car, I’d walk into the house with a smile, and the girls would come running to say hi and give me a hug followed by a big inhale and another smile while saying, “Mmmm…Bixby. Did you go get donuts without us, Daddy?” Haha… It was fantastic. It even won 1st Place, Import Vintage at Air & Auto 5 in October, 2014. The car was everything I’d hoped it would be. My spirited driver for the days I needed “medicine” to our family cruiser on the days we’d take the Causeway to the Currituck Ferry for the afternoon. It was just wonderful.

Family drive toward the Currituck Ferry

thinking something might be burning. My response? “Honey, that’s 1973.” I later replaced the seal on the camshaft that drives the MFI pump, but these older engines still leak just a little bit, and I honestly kind of like it… No other car I’ve owned since arriving at driving age has made me feel like I’m six years old again. This one…it just does.

Still, not surprisingly for those of you who know me well, I was taking notes and starting to think the car needed Shannon and her proud 911 pose! more TLC than just maintenance and family enjoyment. As mentioned above, the car had been repainted in Light Ivory. It wasn’t perfect, and the original Sepia brown paint was present (along with light ivory runs) in the trunk compartment and engine bay. Moreover, the ivory paint had a light tint of green in it such that would have been noticeable if ever parked next to a true Light Ivory car. It just wouldn’t do… Lastly, the market for early 911’s kept getting hotter, and I figured a restoration, though costly, would not be money lost. After more than 3 years of driving the wheels off of this car, I decided it was time. Next time I write, I’ll share what all went into the planning of the restoration and the influences that drove my Ashley loves drives in the country decisions.

As a family, we really loved this car over the next few years. We’d all still fit, since the girls were 11 and 8 (just the right size to still ride in the back), and no donut or ice cream shop was safe from a visit in the 911. We ended up naming the car Bixby after making the connection between the Tony Blake’s character (an illusionist) in the 1973 TV show, The Magician, and the fact that this car wasn’t really a Light Ivory car (the original paint Krispy Kreme with my girls! was Sepia brown). Dinners were always fun too, since I’d have to find an end spot, park on the line farthest from the next parking space, and find a table inside that allowed us to watch people get out of their cars
