The Vanguard Hotel, Autograph Collection offers today’s sophisticated and discerning travelers to Ann Arbor the opportunity to come together to converse, connect, and exchange ideas.
In a nod to James Burrill Angell, credited with evolving The University of Michigan into one of the world’s most renowned public institutions and perhaps best-known for his artfully turned phrase: “an uncommon education for the common man.”
The Vanguard Hotel is an uncommon hotel experience that is distinctive in its approach and offerings. Here, you will discover an entirely new kind of Ann Arbor welcome: worthy of its venerable university neighbor, yet separate and distinctive in its atmosphere and personality.

Conveniently situated between the Residences Water Square high-rise apartments and the Huntington Place Convention Center, this new JW Marriott hotel will serve as a high-end option for those visiting the City of Detroit for everything from conferences to concerts.
The hotel’s prominent riverfront location on the former Joe Louis Arena site offers unmatched views. Inside the hotel, guests can utilize a ground floor restaurant, lobby bar, two ballrooms, market, 50,000 sq ft of meeting rooms, swimming pool, spa and fitness area.
A pedestrian bridge will eventually connect the hotel to Huntington Place Convention Center. By improving the convention-goer and exhibitor experience, JW Marriott Water Square will serve as a catalyst for the City, attracting events that were previously unattainable.
Our design for the hotel entry was influenced by the newly constructed, pedestrian-friendly 2nd Avenue walkway, which creates a vital connection between downtown and the Detroit Riverfront.

The original Kingsley Inn was built in 1958, with a west building added in 1983. In an effort to transform the space into a highly desired meeting destination for millenials, the hotel’s new owners were specifically looking for a modern and fresh design that would have all the technology that this group expects.
Neumann/Smith’s renovation included a complete overhaul of the hotel’s exterior along with extensive interior renovations of its 151 guest rooms, 15,000 square feet of banquet space, swimming pool and lobby.
The hotel’s exterior renovation offers an elegant and contemporary design that blends seamlessly with the surroundings of Bloomfield Hills.
The interior’s overall color palette features a neutral base of gray tones accented with custom artwork representing the region, while specialty lighting elements create a welcoming atmosphere. Elevated guest rooms feature stylish, sophisticated furnishings, upgraded amenities, and updated technology.
