In the depths of winter, Vladimir Kanevsky offers a reminder of summer’s bounty with a collection of alpine flowers made of handmade porcelain and copper, sold exclusively at New York’s Neue Galerie. “I see them as memento mori,” museum director Renée Price says of the pieces, which start as sketches based on botanical charts and grow into delicate- and long lasting- blooms. Readers will be forgiven for not immediately seeing the connection between Vasily Kandinsky’s paintings and Madeline Weinrib’s new napkins for the Neue Galerie, where an exhibit of the Russian artist’s work is on view. “The idea was to collaborate, not copy Kandinsky,” Ms. Weinrib said via email from India. “I decided to reimagine one of my favorite patterns, using colors from Kandinsky’s ‘Fugue’ painting. I thought the combination of colors would complement a variety of dishes, with a modern unexpected punch.” That pattern, called Daphne, is usually hand-woven in silk Ikat. Ms. Weinrib used hand-printed cotton instead, which made possible the intricate design, as well as machine washing. SOMETHING FOR PANDORA: A CERAMIC BOX WITH A LID By RIMA SUQI
FRANCES PALMER’S NEW CHARM BOXES were inspired by a 2002 show of the work of the Austrian decorative artist Dagobert Peche at the Neue Galerie New York, the Manhattan museum specializing in early-20th-century Austrian and German art. She kept the catalog in the Connecticut ceramics studio where she throws earthenware pieces, and was encouraged to create the collection when Renée Price, the Neue Galerie’s director, heard of her interest. It was the first time she tackled the tricky job of making a vessel with a lid. She described the pieces as a riff on Peche’s designs. “Some of the things that inspired these boxes were originally done in silver that I just translated into ceramic,” she said. Step and Repeat: Toile de Jouy Renaissance by Mieke ten Have Toile de Jouy, the eighteenth-century classic French fabric, is having a style revival—much to design enthusiasts’ delight. The “cloth from Jouy,” as it is simply translated, has been a conduit of decorative storytelling for centuries, often in the form of idyllic, pastoral landscapes of people in nature. Now the narrative pattern has been spotted on the runway, and contemporary designers and artists are reinventing the beloved fabric in modern and irreverent ways. Here, a round-up of some of our favorite new iterations.
Neue Galerie collaborated with artist Sara Nesbitt on Toile de Vienne fabric, an homage to the nineteenth-century Viennese beau monde, replete with iconic landmarks of the city—from the Secession Hall to Belvedere Palace. InThe Frame Shades of Freud
Sometimes a cigar is just a cigar, but sunglasses can be so much more. New York’s Neue Galerie is selling Sigmund Freud-style sunshades for $385. The Viennese father of psychoanalysis would be shocked to discover that his early 20th-century “signature” reading spectacles have been turned into a fashion statement, with darkened lenses for the wearer to hide behind. A Neue Galerie statement explains that “his circular eyeglasses remain a distinctive part of Freud’s visual identity and memory, and the Sigmund Freud Sunshades are a contemporary tribute to this legacy”. For those wanting to protect their “hand-crafted celluloid frames styled faithfully after Freud’s everyday eyewear”, there is a leather case—for just an extra $95. The gallery director, Renée Price, tells us that for several years they have sold the limited-edition case, authorised by the Freud Museum in Vienna, and “we then decided to fill it!”—hence the launch of the Freudian shades. BARBARA BARRY, the Los Angeles-based interior designer, has created a range of products, including furniture, tableware, bedding and even luggage. But one of her favorite projects had nothing to do with design. Six years ago, Ms. Barry collaborated with the Canadian company T to create a custom tea blend called Orange Grove, and earlier this year her second blend, Citrine, was introduced. “I truly fell in love with tea on my first trip to Kyoto in 2000,” she said. “And loving all things Japanese, I learned more about the culture through learning about ‘the way of tea.’ ” She added: “Tea is like design: what you leave out is as important as what you put in.” On her way to London, another tea-friendly city, Ms. Barry passed through New York, taking time out to shop for accessories to enhance the experience of drinking tea. As for porcelain tea sets, she noted, Augarten, an Austrian company, makes her favorites. And the Rottenberg service, crowned with a series of whimsical heads, is “magical,” she said. “Each head is put on by hand and smoothed to perfection.
