2024 Gratitude Report
Neuchâtel Junior College

Message From Head of School
NJC continues to offer a world class educational experience for students who are preparing to enter university. With our Canadian identity at the forefront, I am proud of our students’ academic successes during their year in Neuchâtel and after they leave us to embark in a new area of academia. In addition, the experiential opportunities students take part in while at NJC are the stuff of memories. Many of those opportunities involve traveling to new destinations in Europe.
This is a special year for our students which could not be possible without the support and encouragement of our extended school community. The 2024 NJC Gratitude Report is a way to recognize you, our community, many of whom operate from behind the scenes, for the impact you have on the lives of students.
In this report, you will see stories about the transformational experience at NJC as well as new philanthropic gifts for

Thank you to all of you for your generosity and for your support of Neuchâtel Junior College, a school that welcomes students as they graduate from high school or complete a gap year while preparing for university studies. “To those who helped to make this year the best year of my life – a year that would not have been possible without the generous support of the donors. I cannot emphasize enough how magical my year was at NJC and I am confident in saying that NJC has changed my life in so many ways. It has changed my perspective on the world. One day, I hope to give back in the same way you have, providing others with the NJC experience. Thank you for making my year possible, I will forever be grateful for your investment in me.”

$231,822
Donated to ensure deserving students can access a year at NJC!

“Your generosity has provided me with a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to study at NJC, and I am incredibly grateful for your belief in my potential. Balancing my studies and athletic activities was very important to me. Without my parents beside me to enforce expectations, I had to mature and recognize the importance of balancing academics and social life. But unlike university, I always knew there was a safety net of teachers and staff within the NJC community to guide me if I made mistakes while I grew and developed into adulthood. I will always look back at my year at Neuchâtel with gratitude and a smile, as it helped me step out and learn more about the world and myself. ”
Piper ’24

“The opportunity to study and travel in such a unique setting has broadened my horizons and given me a new perspective on the world. It has also reinforced my passion for history, languages, and politics, inspiring me to continue pursuing these interests in my future studies and career. Looking back, I realize how your support has made these experiences possible. As a student who has benefited from your generosity, I cannot express enough gratitude for the opportunity to not only study and live but also thrive and grow at NJC. Thank you once again for your kindness and support. Your contributions have profoundly impacted my life, and I am deeply appreciative.”

Transformation Through Travel
Travel is an integral part of the Neuchâtel Junior College experience, offering students the opportunity to explore Europe, expand their horizons, and gain invaluable cultural insights. By supporting NJC travel bursaries, you’re empowering students to embark on transformative journeys, fostering a deeper understanding of the world and inspiring them to become global citizens. Thank you for ensuring financial barriers don’t hinder students from seizing these life-changing experiences.

“Thanks to you, I saw Europe – Switzerland, France, Greece, Italy, to name a few. To be able to visit such places and to live there, is an experience that is indescribably unique to most Canadian 17-year-olds. I am genuinely filled with gratitude and joy when I reflect on my time in Switzerland, and the travel experiences I embarked on. I thank the donors from the bottom of my heart.”
Kate ’24

“Through travel, I gained greater selfconfidence and a sense of independence. Navigating new cities on school trips and on independent travel weekends, while managing homework and studies on my own- taught me to rely on myself, be organized and plan, as well as adapt to unfamiliar situations with confidence.
Without your generosity, none of this would have been possible. Thank you so much for the privilege of receiving a travel bursary.”
Nate ’24
$16,486
Donated to travel bursaries ensuring that every NJC student can take classroom learning into the world.

“You helped me to step outside the classroom and take learning into the world. Whether that was honouring the Canadian soldiers at Vimy Ridge, trying authentic Catalan cuisine in Barcelona, or admiring the Alps on my morning commute, because of your generosity- I feel as if I’ve done it all. I genuinely believe that I would be a completely different person having not met the people that I did, the experience of travelling, and lived the life that I did.”
Maya ’24

“Geneva is a truly stunning city and without a travel bursary, I would not have been able to appreciate it. One day, I would like to be able to give back to the NJC community by providing student bursaries. I am very grateful for your support and the opportunities the travel bursary was able to provide me with.”

A YEAR IN REVIEW
2024 has been filled with many highlights, from alumni achievements to class successes, and community events to philanthropic endeavours. It’s truly inspiring to witness the dedication and passion of our community, and the continued support from NJC alumni, parents, and friends.

“My year at Neuchâtel Junior College was transformative. It was a chance to grow, mature, and embrace new opportunities. It broadened my understanding of the world and allowed me to become a citizen of the world. The benefits of this experience, no matter your background or aspirations, are lifelong. I am honoured to give back to NJC - to provide that same opportunity to others.”

Generous Gift From Dr. Daniel Andreae ’72 Establishes New NJC Scholarship
The Dr. Daniel Andreae Scholarship for Community Engagement was made possible through a generous $150,000 donation from Dr. Daniel Andreae, Class of 1972.
This scholarship will award $30,000 towards tuition to a deserving fullyear student each academic year, starting in 2025-2026, for the next five years. The scholarship recognizes students who are actively engaged in volunteering and community service.
This scholarship is in recognition of the wonderful mentorship of Dr. Eva Phillip who grew up in Neuchâtel. She was Dr. Andreae’s supervisor in graduate school and is a cherished lifelong friend.
“By supporting NJC students who embody the spirit of community service, we can continue to inspire positive change in the world,” says Dr. Andreae.
Dr. Andreae, a renowned academic and philanthropist, has a long-standing commitment to NJC. His donation will directly impact the lives of students by providing a significant scholarship to attend NJC and enabling them to fully immerse themselves in the college’s unique academic and cultural experiences.
“We are incredibly grateful to Dr. Andreae for his extraordinary generosity,” said Andrew Keleher, Head of School at Neuchâtel Junior College. “This scholarship will make a profound difference for our students, allowing them to pursue their passions and achieve their full potential. We cannot wait to see the remarkable accomplishments of the students who benefit from this scholarship.”

As the Class of 2024 steps confidently into their futures, they leave behind a legacy that inspires and uplifts the entire NJC community.
$64,745

Thank you to the parent volunteers, Whitney Kelsey, Catherine Turner, and Baska Ujejski for their support of our grad class gift. Along with all who contributed to the efforts, they have all played a crucial role in enriching the experiences of our students and our community.
An Inspiring Legacy: Dare to Dream, Dare to Lead With the Class of 1975
In 1975, a group of young minds embarked on a transformative journey at Neuchâtel Junior College. Little did they know that their year abroad would ignite a lifelong passion for learning and leadership.
Inspired by their own experiences, and to celebrate their 50th anniversary, the Class of 1975 sought to make a lasting impact on future generations of NJC students. Their vision materialized in the Dare to Dream, Dare to Lead (D2D D2L) grant, a bold initiative designed to empower students to become innovative leaders and active community members.
“We wanted to create a legacy that would inspire students to reach their full potential,” says Laurey Gillies, co-chair of the Class of 1975 committee. “By providing funding and mentorship, we hope to encourage students to think critically, embrace challenges, and make a positive difference in the world.”
The inaugural recipients of the Dare to Dream, Dare to Lead grant are the Class of 2025. This year, five student groups submitted proposals for projects that would hone their leadership skills while making a community impact. Each year, $10,000 in funding is available to award to deserving proposals, allowing students to gain hands-on experience and develop essential leadership skills.

A critical aspect of this initative has been fundraising. To ensure the longevity of the Dare to Dream, Dare to Lead grant, the committee set an ambitious goal of raising $200,000. These funds will finance these student initiatives for the next 20 years. So far, they have raised an
impressive $148,000, thanks to the generosity of donors. Every dollar brings them closer to empowering the next generation of leaders, and invite all alumni to contribute to this grant.
As the Class of 1975 gathered for their 50th reunion, they reflected on the impact of their NJC experience. Their legacy serves as a reminder that the power of education can shape lives, inspire dreams, and create a brighter future for all.
A Timeless Bond: The Class of 1975 Committee
Neuchâtel Junior College is more than just a school; it’s a family that extends far beyond graduation day. The bonds forged within its hallowed halls continue to thrive, as alumni from across the decades remain connected, supporting each other and giving back to the generations that follow.
The Class of 1975 Committee is a testament to the power of community. By staying connected, they not only strengthen their own bonds but also contribute to the ongoing success of their school.

“I support Dare to Dream, Dare to Lead (D2D D2L) because it is both a gift to NJC and to new generations of students. I wanted to make a meaningful contribution to NJC in recognition of what was a transformational year for me.”
Laurey Gillies

“The idea of giving back to Neuchâtel and NJC, and encouraging more interaction between the students and the community made sense to me. I hope the Dare to Dream, Dare to Lead project will bring together students and residents, and will inspire some creative collaboration to benefit both sides.”
Jennifer MacAulay

“Investing in the leaders of tomorrow is the best legacy I can think of. (Mr. Brown would have been disappointed that I finished a sentence with a preposition, but so be it.) ”
Mike Robins

“Reflecting on my 40+ year career as an arts management leader in Canada, I realize that it all began with a studentled initiative at NJC. We created this special leadership grant to give an opportunity for today’s students to have an opportunity that helps to launch their futures.”
Victoria Steele

“I support the D2D D2L grant as it fosters creative thinking, teamwork, reallife considerations such as budgets, timelines, and defined goals. All this will promote much-needed resourcefulness in life!”
Paula Mascioli

“Dare to Dream, then work hard to turn those dreams into reality. Who knows where it might lead!”
Richard Mills

“Continuity is a big part of why D2D D2L is important to me. That a group of strangers could come together as teenagers and stay passionate, respectful, and connected enough after 50 years to generate a project that positively impacts others well into the future, is noteworthy. D2D D2L is being part of a bigger picture, it’s leading by example and it’s love.”
Judy Thompson

“My year in Neuchâtel was one of the best years of my life and I was lucky to make many lasting friendships. The project we worked on that year (a theatre production) created close bonds that continue to this day. I hope our grant will facilitate meaningful student-led projects that result in bonds and memories, lasting for years to come.”

Franca & Arthur Moss Distinguished Service Award
“Art and I are thrilled yet humbled to have been selected as recipients. We have so enjoyed our volunteer commitment and engagement with NJC over the last 35 years. We say NJC has become part of our DNA.”
Franca and Arthur’s journey with NJC started long before 1997 when they sent their daughter Angelique to attend NJC for one semester. Both educators in the Niagara Falls community, they had promoted the school to their students, seeing the impact it could have on those who could afford to attend.
It was during this time that Franca and Art discussed an opportunity with their former student, John MacBain, to start a scholarship to NJC through his philanthropic giving. Mr. MacBain decided to dedicate a scholarship in Franca and Art’s honour, due to the impact they had on him, as his principal and teacher when he attended A.N. Myer Secondary School in Niagara Falls. The scholarship is now in its second term, having supported five students to attend.

Transforming the Hub of the NJC Community
Neuchâtel Junior College is more than just a school; it’s a place where students find belonging, grow, and form lifelong friendships. At the heart of this vibrant community lies the Study Centre, a space that has been transformed thanks to the generous support of the Nussbaum DeFehr family.
Once a traditional study hall, the Study Centre has been reimagined as a dynamic hub for learning, collaboration, and social interaction. It’s a place where students can gather to discuss ideas, work on projects, or simply relax with friends. The warm, inviting atmosphere fosters a sense of community and belonging, making NJC feel like a true home away from home.
We extend our thanks to Dan, Shanti, Leo ’19, Sachin ’22, and Collette ’23 for their commitment to NJC. Their generous gift will have a lasting impact on students to come. By dedicating the Study Centre in their name, we honour their invaluable contributions and celebrate the spirit of philanthropy that defines our community.

Building a Brighter Future for NJC: The Power of Planned Giving
Neuchâtel Junior College has a rich history of fostering transformative educational experiences for young minds. We’re committed not only to the present but also to the future of our programs and the vibrant community we’ve built. That’s why we’re excited to introduce NJC Planned Giving, a new opportunity to leave a lasting impact on generations to come. Planned giving, also known as legacy giving, allows you to make a significant contribution to NJC while strategically managing your assets and maximizing your tax benefits.
Jim Carr, a proud member of the Class of 1962, exemplifies the power of planned giving. Jim established the Leonard Wilde Bursary in memory of our founder, ensuring deserving students can access the same life-changing experience that shaped him. Jim’s commitment goes beyond annual giving. He has chosen to include NJC in his will, securing the school’s legacy for future generations.
“I believe in the transformative power of education,” says Jim. “By making a planned gift, I hope to ensure students continue to have access to the incredible opportunities that shaped my life. Together, we can empower them to reach their full potential and make positive contributions to the world.”

Jim is part of the 1956 Society, which honours all donors who choose to make a lasting impact on NJC through planned giving. Whether you’re considering a gift through your will, a life insurance policy, or another strategy, NJC Planned Giving offers a variety of options to fit your circumstances.
To learn more about the NJC Planned Giving Program and how you can make a difference, please email advancement@neuchatel.org. Together, we can ensure that the legacy of transformative education continues to thrive at Neuchâtel Junior College.

A transformational year at NJC happens because of our donor community.
NJC is honoured to acknowledge our generous donors whose gifts in 2024 make a transformational difference to our students and school. We are grateful for your continued support. We also thank those who choose to remain anonymous. Donors are listed as of December 31, 2024.
