IMPLEMENTING OSPF • The Open Shortest Path First (OSPF) protocol is a link-state protocol that builds and maintains the routing tables that are needed for IPv4 and IPv6 traffic.

• Both versions of OSPF are open standards and will run on various devices that need to manage a routing table.

• The Shortest Path First (SPF) algorithm developed by Dijkstra in 1956.

• OSPF provides its fast convergence using triggered, incremental updates by exchanging Link State

Advertisements (LSAs) with neighboring OSPF routers. OSPF is a classless protocol, meaning it carries the subnet mask with all IP routes.

• OSPF supports a structured hierarchical design model using autonomous systems, a backbone, and other areas.

IMPLEMENTING OSPF • OSPF was developed based on an open standard and is supported by several router manufacturers. OSPF is widely used as an Interior Gateway Protocol (IGP), especially in large network environments.

• OSPF was developed to scale to much larger

networks. as a replacement for the distance vector routing protocol, Routing Information Protocol (RIP). The major advantages of OSPF over RIP are its fast convergence and its ability.

ROUTE REDISTRIBUTION • Route redistribution allows routes from one routing protocol to be advertised in another routing protocol.

•

While running a single routing protocol throughout your entire IP internetwork is desirable, multi-protocol routing is common for several reasons, such as company mergers, multiple departments managed by multiple network

administrators, and multi-vendor environments. Running different routing protocols is often part of a network design. In any case, having a multiple protocol environment makes redistribution a necessity.

CONFIGURING OSPFV3 FOR IPV6 • While OSPFv2 is feature-rich and widely deployed, it does have one major limitation in that it does not support the routing of IPv6 networks. Fortunately, OSPFv3 does support IPv6 routing, and it can be configured to also support IPv4 routing.

• The OSPF processes—traditional OSPFv2, traditional OSPFv3, and the new OSPFv3 that uses address families to support both IP stacks—differ in the transport protocols.
