FIESTA

What a year 2024 has been! As we march towards its conclusion, it’s time to reflect on our journey and gear up for an exciting festive season. At Net Nine Nine, we’re celebrating a year of remarkable milestones, all thanks to our commitment to bringing affordable, reliable internet to communities across South Africa.

From expanding our cabling networks across eight provinces to becoming a household name in fibre internet, 2024 has been a testament to our dedication. We’ve proven that success truly is the sum of small, consistent efforts.

Notably, our work hasn’t gone unnoticed. The telecoms industry has taken note, with competitors stepping up their game to the benefit of South Africans everywhere. It’s a win-win – healthy competition driving better services for all.

One of our proudest achievements this year has been supporting education. From helping matriculants access revision materials online to conducting fibre internet workshops for Grade 11 learners at Mandisa Shiceka School of Specialisation, we’ve seen the transformative power of connectivity.

Our learners were taken through real-world fibre processes like trenching, splicing, and switching on connections, planting seeds for their future in a techdriven world. By empowering youth with digital skills, we’re investing in South Africa’s next generation of innovators.

Our partnerships with Small, Medium, and Micro Enterprises (SMMEs) have alleviated unemployment and facilitated critical skills transfer. These contractors, working alongside us, are proof that fibre connectivity doesn’t just bring faster internet – it builds stronger communities.

LOOKING AHEAD TO 2025

As we move into 2025, we’re doubling down on our mission to accelerate broadband rollouts, focusing on previously disadvantaged areas such as rural villages and townships. Our aim is to:

• Partner with local leaders and government stakeholders.

• Create employment opportunities.

• Expand access to digital infrastructure.

We’re dedicated to enabling a digitally savvy society that can thrive in the Fourth Industrial Revolution (4IR).

The festive season is upon us, and many will soon be taking a break from work. But don’t let a lack of internet leave you disconnected at home!

Our affordable packages start from just R379, offering unlimited access to online entertainment, education, and opportunities. Whether streaming movies, gaming with friends, or connecting with loved ones, Net Nine Nine ensures your holidays are anything but dull.

From December to the twelve months of 2025 and beyond, fibre internet will be the trend that keeps South Africa connected. It’s never too late to align yourself with Net Nine Nine’s reliable service. Together, we’re building a future where connectivity knows no bounds.

NEW PACKAGES FOR HAMMASKRAAL!

Net Nine Nine Ga-Rankuwa & Hammaskraal deliver 100% quality.

Net Nine Nine has shifted into high gear to improve service delivery for its customers in Ga-Rankuwa and Hammanskraal. Since opening its Ga-Rankuwa store in 2022 and launching in Hammanskraal a year later, the ISP has become a community favourite, offering reliable and affordable internet to areas previously underserved by other providers.

Net Nine Nine has focused on bringing fibre connectivity to densely populated townships, where many communities have been left behind by traditional service providers. The company’s commitment to Ga-Rankuwa and Hammanskraal has garnered widespread support from local organisations such as Zondi Patrol, Community Policing Forums (CPF), and the Ga-Rankuwa United Taxi Association (GUTA). Even local SAPS officers are connected to the network, reflecting the ISP’s growing community ownership and trust.

With over 90% cheaper rates compared to LTE/mobile data, GaRankuwa has seen hundreds of households connect to the service, enjoying fast and affordable fibre internet.

Like any ISP, Net Nine Nine faces occasional service disruptions, often due to:

• Municipal equipment damaging cables during maintenance.

• Other companies accidentally damaging infrastructure while trenching or working on aerial installations.

• Illegal connections (izinyokanyoka) tampering with upright poles for criminal purposes.

Despite these challenges, Net Nine Nine remains committed to restoring services within 72 hours, a promise it has consistently kept.

Hammanskraal, home to over 25,000 people across its suburbs, townships, and rural villages, enthusiastically welcomed Net Nine Nine with the launch of its first store on 20 June 2023.

The community has embraced the ISP’s prepaid, no-contract packages, which include:

• R379 for speeds up to 20/20Mbps, connecting up to 5 devices.

•50/50Mbps and 100/100Mbps packages, connecting up to 10 and 15 devices respectively.

These packages come with free installation, a free-to-use router,

and no binding contracts, making them ideal for families and local businesses alike.

The regional manager for Ga-Rankuwa and Hammanskraal, Ronald “Ronny” Mofokeng, emphasised the importance of community relationships:

“Net Nine Nine doesn’t just do business; we’ve built a family relationship with these communities. We employ locals, partner with local SMMEs, and invest in community development. We also encourage residents to report any suspicious activities involving our infrastructure to the authorities to help protect what we’ve built together.”

GIVING BACK TO THE COMMUNITY Tackling challenges with resilience

Net Nine Nine’s corporate social investment (CSI) projects include:

• Donations to NGOs and sporting organisations.

• Supporting foundations and initiatives aimed at uplifting the community.

Mofokeng added:

“In Hammanskraal, we introduced additional packages based on community feedback. It’s our way of aligning with the needs of all

our regions across the country. We’re proud of the support we’ve received from local leaders and are eager to strengthen ties with other organisations to further transform lives.”

Through reliable service, affordable packages, and communitydriven initiatives, Net Nine Nine continues to deliver on its promise to connect and uplift the communities of Ga-Rankuwa and Hammanskraal.

HEROIC ZONDI CRIME BUSTERS

GA-RANKUWA COMMUNITY’S FAVOURITE PATROLLERS!

In a time when safety feels uncertain, Zondi Patrol has emerged as a beacon of hope for the residents of GaRankuwa, north of Tshwane. This community-driven initiative, led by the determined Sibusiso Zondi, offers much-needed peace of mind by tackling crime head-on.

Motivated by rising crime rates reported by the former Minister of Police, Zondi took the bold step of forming Crime Busters-Zondi Patrol. Starting with a group of local youth, the team initially focused on curbing house break-ins and cable theft, issues that had overwhelmed the underresourced SA Police Service (SAPS). Through their efforts, they not only brought crime under control but also earned the trust and partnership of local organisations, including taxi associations, traffic control departments, and even the government’s Community Safety initiatives.

GOING BEYOND THE CALL OF DUTY

Zondi Patrol specialises in:

• Community patrols (day and night).

• Property and office armed guarding.

• Armed response in emergencies.

Despite their vital work, the group operates as a non-profit organisation, relying on donations such as bicycles and other essential items from generous community members.

Zondi explains:

“We’ve seen how unemployment drives crime in our township. Around this time of year, we notice an increase in white-collar crimes, particularly targeting stokvels. We often step in to escort community members during cash withdrawals and ensure their safety. Kidnappings are another rising concern, and we remain vigilant in responding to these threats.”

Zondi Patrol’s success lies in their deep connection with the community. With a team of 120 guards

stationed across Ga-Rankuwa and neighbouring areas like Ramogodi, Mmakau, Hebron, and Erasmus, they ensure a rapid response time of 15 minutes or less.

Their strategy includes:

• CCTV surveillance, monitored 24/7.

• Foot patrols, enabling them to track criminals even in difficult terrain.

• Online reporting, facilitated by active WhatsApp and Facebook groups with over 310,000 members.

This ground-level presence has made Zondi Patrol a trusted ally in the fight against crime.

PARTNERSHIP WITH NET NINE NINE

Net Nine Nine has joined forces with Zondi Patrol, providing critical support as part of its community investment initiatives. Zondi Patrol relies on Net Nine Nine’s reliable fibre network for its CCTV cameras, enhancing their ability to monitor and respond to crime.

“Our partnership with Net Nine Nine has been a gamechanger. Their internet keeps our surveillance systems running, and in turn, we protect their offices and infrastructure. Fibre cable theft is a growing issue, but we’ve successfully apprehended culprits, particularly in Zone 7, where we stopped tampering with underground

Despite the dangers of confronting armed criminals, Zondi Patrol remains steadfast in its mission. Zondi

“This work is risky, but we do it because we care about our community. With the continued support of Net Nine Nine and other partners, we’re confident we can reduce crime and make Ga-Rankuwa a safer place for everyone.”

Zondi Patrol stands as a testament to the power of community-driven action, proving that even in the face of challenges, unity and determination can make a difference.

LYBON: NET99 GROWING INTO DIFFERENT DIRECTION

Good things come to those who wait, and while the wait can sometimes be long, it is always worth it when dreams are realised.

This is the story of Lybon Mashimbyi, who has been promoted to Net Nine Nine’s Regional Business Development Manager. Previously, he served as Sales Manager and Westonaria Regional Manager in the West Rand, overseeing areas such as Simunye, Bekkersdal, Glenhavie, and Westonaria.

While his previous role came with its challenges, Mashimbyi says his new position will require him to roll up his sleeves and tackle national-level responsibilities. Known for his resilience and readiness to embrace challenges, he’s excited to take on this opportunity.

In a previous interview with Be The Hero, Mashimbyi shared his passion for his work, but now he’s ready to shift into a higher gear.

“My staff get briefed on the latest updates from the company, and we map out the day’s priorities. I’m always happy to give them a breakdown of our targets, and we push each other to meet them. One of the biggest challenges has been fibre breaks and explaining the situation to clients,” he explained during that interview in June, unaware of the significant national role that awaited him.

Speaking to Be The Hero from Mpumalanga— where he was temporarily overseeing KwaGuqa and Mhluzi regions in the absence of a local manager—Mashimbyi described his new role as being more expansive, with a national scope.

Net Nine Nine is rapidly growing, with coverage now spanning eight provinces. The company’s growth requires dedicated leaders like Mashimbyi to keep an eye on operations across all regions.

“I am carrying out the same responsibilities as I did in Westonaria, but now on a national scale. You can imagine leading all regions instead of just one. My biggest focus will be on the day-to-day activities of Field Sales Agents, ensuring performance consistency. I’ll also resolve challenges in different regions and frequently interact with Regional Managers to provide guidance when they are unavailable,” he explained.

As Net Nine Nine continues to expand into new areas, Mashimbyi’s role will be critical in ensuring smooth operations and consistent management across the board. “There shouldn’t be any region left unmanaged in the absence of

a designated manager. My role is essentially to assist and hold the fort where needed,” he added.

Although he is embracing his new responsibilities, Mashimbyi admits he already misses Westonaria, which had become a home for him, both professionally and personally.

“Westonaria was a challenging region, but I enjoyed working there because of the bonds I formed with colleagues and clients. We were a small region with 11,000 homes, but we always hit our targets. I had the best staff ever,” he said.

Now, Mashimbyi looks forward to the challenges of his new role. “I believe my managers trust and believe in me, which is why I was appointed. I promise to make this role work. I will push myself hard, and I know I’m capable of succeeding,” he

Reflecting on his initial work in Mpumalanga, he noted: “The experience was great. I’ve always connected well with staff, and many knew me from our weekly Power Wednesday Meetings. It’s exciting to do this across all regions now. While the scope is bigger, the duties remain the same—I just have to apply them nationwide. So far, the transition has been smooth, and I am optimistic about more positive results ahead.”

With Mashimbyi at the helm, Net Nine Nine is wellpositioned to navigate its rapid growth and continue delivering exceptional service nationwide.

EMPOWERING & UPSKILLING LEARNERS IN KAGISO!

Net Nine Nine is proud to lead a transformative fibre upskilling programme for Grade 11 learners at the Mandisa Shiceka School of Specialisation. This initiative provides 210 learners in Kagiso with an opportunity to acquire sought-after technical skills in telecommunications.

Running from August through the end of the school calendar, the programme combines theoretical knowledge with hands-on practical training to prepare students for potential careers in the fibre industry.

BUILDING FOUNDATIONS IN TELECOMMUNICATIONS

In collaboration with Cable Feeder Systems (CFS), students begin by exploring the fundamentals of fibre technology.

They learn about:

• Fibre composition and manufacturing

• Fibre network construction

• The role of fibre optics in modern networks

A knowledge quiz conducted during the theory phase revealed a promising 50% pass rate, showcasing the students’ growing understanding.

Practical training, facilitated by KC Pinnacle, allows students to apply their theoretical knowledge. Under expert supervision, they master skills such as:

• Splicing joints

• Stripping and rejoining cables

• Fibre installations

These sessions also include real-world applications like home fibre installations. Students’ progress and enthusiasm can be seen on Net Nine Nine’s social media pages.

Upon completing the programme, learners will receive a certificate and qualify for potential internship placements with Net Nine Nine or KC Pinnacle. For many, this represents the first step toward a promising career in telecommunications.

Net Nine Nine is dedicated to empowering Kagiso’s youth, bridging the gap between education and industry. By

equipping students with in-demand skills, the company invests not only in individual futures but also in the broader development of Kagiso’s community.

TESTIMONIALS

Phenyo More, a Net Nine Nine planner and programme tutor, praised the initiative:

“It’s an honour to expose young students to this highdemand skill. The learners were curious, enthusiastic, and eager to understand fibre optics. I hope to continue spreading this knowledge, especially to schools new to the digital platform.”

Sombasa Masilakhe, a teacher at Mandisa Shiceka, highlighted the programme’s positive impact:

“At first, some learners were unsure about what was expected, but their excitement grew as they realised the opportunities available. They are enthusiastic and enjoying this unique learning experience. I hope we can collaborate with Net Nine Nine again next year.”

EMPOWERING & UPSKILLING LEARNERS IN KAGISO!

Net Nine Nine looks forward to continuing initiatives that empower youth and transform communities, ensuring learners like those in Kagiso are prepared to thrive in the growing telecommunications industry.

AFRICA MUST COLLABORATE ON DIGITAL GROWTH THAN COMPETE!

African countries need to collaborate to ensure that the continent’s young population is connected and able to participate in the digital economy.

This is the word from John Omo, secretary-general of the African Telecommunications Union (ATU), addressing the Ministerial Forum ahead of the 27th edition of the AfricaCom 2024 which was held in Cape Town.

Africa is experiencing a significant communications shift, he says, with the number of Internet users now surpassing 600-million, for an internet penetration of about 42% of the population.

“Yes, there has been growth, but it is still way below the international average of 66%,” says Omo.

“This tells us all that there is still a lot more to do in terms of the initiatives we need to put together.”

The opportunities in the digital world are numerous, he adds.

“As we face the significant challenges, we must identify the opportunities and the challenges, and how we can surpass them together.”

The lack of electricity access in several areas restricts the use of digital technologies, so disparities still persist.

The International Telecommunications Union (ITU) notes that just 23% of people in rural areas – including in South Africa – have access to the Internet compared to the urban average of 57%.

Regulatory hurdles compound these issues, inhibiting investment in connectivity.

This is especially true in rural areas where they inhibit people from participating in the digital economy, Omo adds.

“Fortunately, there are minds with a solution,” he says.

“I think collaboration in terms of learning from one another is key. Oftentimes we have competed rather than collaborated – and this kills initiatives that would allow us to forge ahead together.

“My call is for more dialogue, and sharing of resources, working with governments and telecommunications operators.”

The ATU works with the ITU on several issues, including reclaiming of radio resources. For instance, more than 18 000 FM channels are now available.

“So we do believe there is a role to play at the African and global level to work with the membership and facilitate access.”

John Omo, secretary-general of the African Telecommunications Union

Africa has the world’s youngest population.

“This is a huge potential,” Omo says.

“But we must give them opportunities – and digital technology can provide this.

“We need to retain focus. A lot has been accomplished, but a lot still needs to be done to bridge the various divides we still have.”

Digitalisation, intelligence and decarbonisation are the three imperatives currently sweeping the world, according to Hover Gao, president of Huawei subSaharan Africa.

He says there are vibrant opportunities in subSaharan Africa.

“We believe that prosperity, inclusivity and sustainability are the most important values to pursue.”

To do so, Huawei recommends collaboration in three key areas.

The first area is around data, a crucial resource in the intelligent age. Indeed, artificial intelligence (AI) could add trillions to Africa’s economy by 2030, raising 11-million out of poverty every year.

A national cloud can help to realise the opportunities, Gao says.

“It could lower the cost of access while improving access to government services.”

To achieve sustainability, renewable energy has a big role to play, he adds.

And solar energy is an ideal solution for Africa, being the cheapest source to plug the significant energy gap especially in rural areas.

Africa already leads the world in solar installations, and there are many opportunities for micro-grids to

supply affordable energy, Gao adds.

China has long advocated buildings roads in order to promote economic growth, and this philosophy stays true in the digital era.

“Cloud, Internet of Things (IoT) and electricity are the roads in the AI era,” Gao says, “they can connect us to greater opportunities for every individual and country.”

He adds that China has pulled itself up as an industrialisation latecomer, to the point where it is a digital leader, and is keen to work with Africa to share its experiences.

“As we look to the future, we stand ready to work closely with all parties and leverage our expertise so we can sustainably contribute to a digital economy

Hover Gao, president of Huawei sub-Saharan Africa.
