We get two opposing views on buying a ‘fixer upper’ or period home and, if you’ve been guilty of holding on to the past with your belongings, we talk to TV presenter Jasmine Harman about de-cluttering and how to let go of nostalgia. Something new to us though was discovering the Cotswolds’ very own lake district (Water Park), and you can get some great ideas of how to spend a family holiday in the area. We talk to Tom and Henry Herbert, from the same area about baking and the butcher’s block.

A new build blank canvas or a ‘fixer upper’ - whatever your preference, get your finances straight before you get carried away A recent study by Skipton Building Society found that out of 2,000 people interviewed, four in 10 people would only consider moving into an older house if money was no object. Of those interviewed, 44 per cent would worry about damp and 38% would have trepidations about structural issues. The reasons not to buy an older property go on but what if buying an older house offers the opportunity to climb the property ladder and make a long-term investment?

I live in North Norfolk; reed thatch and knapped flint are my two favourites.

Another plus point for me is the fact that I’m not bound to endless rules and regulations with an old property (mind you, I haven’t ever bought a listed house).

Of course I have smoke alarms and good security measures, but there seems to be less red tape involved when it comes to buying an old place. I like to look at it as though I own a little piece of history – a proud custodian, preserving all its unique characteristics for years to come, until it’s passed onto the next proud homeowner. The bottom line is that I just love all the character and ‘faults’ that an old house has... those creaky floorboards and draughty windows... even when I’m making a late night cup of tea....

As we all start to get the de-cluttering fever at this time of year, tackling home improvement projects, Jasmine Harman, TV Presenter for A Place in the Sun: Home or Away and BBC’s Britain’s Biggest Hoarders, shares her tips on de-cluttering “I have first-hand experience of helping people to de-clutter - not only those people I have met through Britain’s Biggest Hoarders but also from having helped my own mum sort out her stuff – as a serious hoarder. It’s perfectly normal to find it difficult to get rid of unused items, but if you are motivated to do some spring cleaning and want to create more space in your home, help is at hand – here are a few handy tips! It’s the perfect time of year to don your Marigolds and rummage around under the stairs or beneath the bed - who knows what you’ll find. There may be a few bits and bobs that you’ll want to sling straight in the bin but you’re guaranteed to find a veritable selection of unused items

that could be another person’s ‘gold’, so do consider setting aside a pile of items to sell through a website such as Gumtree, Ebay or even to post on Freecycle if you’re not interested in making cash.

From my experience, one of the main reasons that people find it hard to let go of unused items are the emotional attachments. It could be a dress or coat that we wore in our younger years, programmes from concerts, tickets or an old casette compilation tape that a friend once gave you back in the 90s – one thing is sure, everyone loves a bit of nostalgia. But be as brutal as you can when it comes to binning or selling possessions. Once you’ve got rid of the first few, it will get easier.”

JASMINE’S 5 TOP DE-CLUTTERING TIPS: 1. Don’t worry about being ungrateful if you want to throw unwanted gifts away.

2. Don’t hold on to technology – it moves quickly and loses value.

3. Make time to de-clutter – a good chunk of time is best.

4. B e realistic about what people will buy, what charity shops will be interested in, and what should head straight for the bin.

5. A void simply moving piles of clutter around - commit to ensuring it does actually leave the house. Make regular trips out of the house to the bin, tip, charity shop.

10 MEAN ECCLES CAKES INGREDIENTS:

The Fabulous Baker Brothers With five generations of baking tradition behind them, Tom and Henry Herbert took to Channel 4’s screens with a plan to roll up their sleeves and unlock the trade secrets of baking. Tom has a bakery and Henry, a chef, runs the adjoining butcher’s shop in the Gloucestershire village of Chipping Sodbury. Their book ‘The Fabulous Baker Brothers’ launched in 2012 and remains a popular choice.

Henry broke with family tradition by opening a butchers. He says, “I was Head Chef in an award-winning pub in Clerkenwell, The Coach and Horses, where I went for six years. Coming from the point of view of a chef, I feel I have something different to offer the customer - a fresh take on the butcher’s block.

I bake as well though, and my inspiration for anything we create together or that I develop by myself comes from talking to people and visiting new places.”

Tom, the ‘official’ baker out of the two, says: “Henry makes great bread, and helped me to develop the Hobbs House Bakery ultimate burger baps. Any more than six loaves to bake, though, and he’s amateur. What we do on telly is what we

Tom, who was Young Baker of the Year, set out with an ambition to do for bread what Rick Stein did for fish. “It’s not only the baking though; I’m passionate about eating and sharing bread. With my wood fired oven at our bakery/cafe by the stream in Nailsworth, I regularly give talks, demonstrations and run courses.”

When pressed for some tips on baking, the brothers agree, “We eat first with our eyes. Presentation is everything but if it’s cooked well, simple is good. Taste is vital to see your guests return for more. What else? Rapeseed oil is great for baking bread - it’s England’s answer for olive oil and has a great nutty flavour - use it for dressing and dips, too.”

• 30g melted butter • 150g light soft brown sugar • 175g currants • Pinch of cinnamon • Zest of an orange • Puff pastry disks 6” in diameter • 1 egg • Caster sugar for sprinkling • 1⁄2 chicken stock cube, plus 300ml boiling water • 150ml Eisberg Chardonnay • 1 lemon • 100g mixed olives

METHOD: 1 Pre heat your oven to 180 and line a baking tray with parchment. Sprinkle with caster sugar to caramelise the bottom of the cakes in the oven.

3 Start with the filling, put the sugar, currants, cinnamon and orange zest into a bowl and mix together, then melt the butter until bubbling and stir into the filling until well combined.

4 Cut your pastry disks – ready rolled or make your own!

5 Use a small 6”plate or saucer as a template. Smaller ones will do for afternoon tea.

6 Whisk the egg, then brush round the edge of the disks, and put a spoonful of filling into the centre.

Gather up the pastry into a purse shape, squeezing together to seal.

Turn the cake upside down and put onto your baking tray, then flatten into a disk shape with the palm of your hand.

7 Brush with more of the egg and liberally sprinkle with more caster sugar, then with a sharp knife, put 2 small cuts into the top, this stops them puffing up like footballs during cooking. Repeat, then bake for 15 - 30 minutes or until golden brown, and leave to cool slightly as the middle will be molten hot.
