RAISE MUSLIN CURTAIN - ACTION BEGINS

The small mountain village of Lià, just before the outbreak of the Greek Civil War, on Saint Dimitri's day, at the end of Summer in 1946. Most of the villagers are outside the church with the priest, but a growing number of them are going to the village square listening to the leader of the rebel army. In the churchyard in the background, Eleni and her family stand around an open grave. A Sexton (grave-digger) stands in the grave.

Nicholas rises from his desk and enters the stage scene. He is invisible to the rest of the cast. He walks around the others pointing out what he is describing as he sings. It is clear that the cast in unaware of his presence. The sexton hands Eleni a skull. This is the story of a sacrifice.

...mother was left to bring up five children with only the help of her beloved mother-in-law, Fotini.

But when Fotinì passed away, life suddenly became much harder. Then war came. This is also a tale of courage and defiance - the courage of one woman to take a decision she knew might very well cost her her life - a courage driven by a deep love for her children. This is an account of that courage and defiance.
