WELCOME to EDITION II ——  In many ways we’ve come a long way since the humble surroundings of our first retail showroom on Ecclesall Road. There are a few more of us (and lots more of you). We now send furniture to happy customers all over the world. But in one vital way we haven't moved far at all. We’re still based in Sheffield – ‘the Steel City’ – and proud of it. To celebrate this heritage we did something different for our brochure shoot. Meetings were held, calls made, strings pulled and favours promised – and we eventually got the nod to shoot some of our favourite products on location at an iconic Sheffield landmark. Love it or hate it, the Brutalist-designed Park Hill estate has a few stories to tell. Originally opened in 1961, the ‘streets in the sky’ complex is the largest (Grade II) listed building in Europe and is currently being revived by award-winning property developers Urban Splash. Here, we give you a chance to peek behind the scenes at a fascinating work in progress.

Toni Anne Sanderson Marketing and Communications Manager “ My perfect night-in involves lounging on the sofa eating popcorn and watching a great movie!”

We’ve packed plenty into the following pages, from shopping inspiration for your home to the latest news from legendary British designer Tom Dixon. We take a closer look at the timeless designs of Charles & Ray Eames in 'The Eames Story' and explore all that SCP has to offer. We hope you enjoy it. Toni Anne Sanderson Editor P.S. We truly believe in the design of the products we sell, the craftsmanship that is employed and the materials used to make them – that is why we only sell licensed originals.

lounge GET IT RIGHT AND EVERYTHING FALLS INTO PLACE. ——  Modern living means the once-humble settee has become much more than a place to rest and put your feet up. We spend a massive amount of time lounging, surfing online, watching TV, eating, playing games and reading on the sofa, so it’s important to get it right. Consider how much living space you have, how you use it, the light within the room and ultimately the style that’s right for you. Do you have an open-plan living area which could accommodate a modular sofa, or is your space more restrictive, suggesting something more compact would work best?

DID YOU KNOW? You spend an average of ten years sitting on your sofa!

——  Think about who uses the space too. If it’s your main family room the colour and materials you choose are more important – and remember, leather can easily be wiped down with a damp cloth. On the other hand, if you entertain regularly then maybe a versatile sofa bed is what you need! It can easily slip your mind, but don’t forget to measure carefully before you buy, calculating the biggest sofa your room can take – and double-check the access into your home to make sure it will fit. Once you’ve considered what’s needed, you can think about style, because from classic design to ultramodern we’ve got it covered.

Christian Hawley Managing Director “ My ideal home would be a simple, spacious Modernist house on the coast filled with iconic pieces by renowned designers. And yes, 100% authentic please!”

SET THE SCENE TO MAKE MODERN RESTAURANT CHIC YOUR OWN. ——  Dining in style doesn’t need to take a back seat while the economic climate is volatile, you can still set the scene you want with some fantastic-quality, affordable pieces. Here’s our inspiration for the cost-conscious shopper. The look is part-classic, part Scandi chic, with some great finishes that keep the overall approach clean and fresh. Teaming indigo shades with pure white brings a smart, crisp feel to your scheme and, by adding a coloured rug, you can cleverly define and warm your space in an open-plan living environment. Don’t forget your lighting. A low-hung central pendant light works brilliantly to add drama and becomes a key focal point in your dining area to really tie the look together. You can spruce up your dining room easily and relatively cheaply by buying new chairs to go with your existing table. It’s a great way to create an individual look and really makes a statement if you mix & match the chair colours too. Remember, the new chairs will need to fit around your existing table, so measure carefully! As a rough guide allow about 60cm of table top for each person at a rectangular table and 75cm for a round table.

TOP TIP Team a rectangular table with bench seating for a more laid-back dining experience.

Antony Jackson Website Content Editor “ My dream piece for the home would be a Vitra RAR Eames Plastic Armchair – perfect to rock in the corner!”

The perfect Yorkshire pudding! — 1 x mug of plain flour — 1 x mug of semi-skimmed milk — 4 x eggs — Salt and pepper — Half-teaspoon of mustard powder Mix all the ingredients together with a whisk and for best results leave for an hour to stand. Heat the oven to 190°C. Drizzle a little sunflower oil into a 12-hole muffin tin and place in the oven to heat through. Once the oil is thoroughly hot, carefully take the tin out of the oven and half-fill each hole with the batter mixture. Place back into the oven for 15–20 minutes, or until done. Remember not to open the oven door whilst they’re cooking to ensure they rise! Once the Yorkshire puddings are ready, take them out of the oven and leave to cool. You can then fill them with some great savoury fillings such as beef & horseradish, chilli, bolognese or sausage & mushy peas to make delicious party-style canapés. NOTE: If you don’t add the salt, pepper

and mustard powder you can fill the Yorkshires with sweet fillings – yummy!

The Eames story

A celebration of design. ——  With a background in architecture, Charles Eames was an innovative designer. In 1940 he won first prize (alongside fellow designer Eero Saarinen) for their joint entry into the ‘Organic Design in Home Furnishings’ competition at the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York. During this time he met artist and painter Ray Kaiser whilst working at Cranbrook Academy of Art, and in 1941 they married. The inseparable duo designed some of the most iconic furniture of the twentieth century. Charles and Ray were fascinated by the elegant and organic shapes of moulded plywood, so much so that they installed a workshop in the spare room of their rented home in LA. Their first order for 5,000 moulded plywood leg splints from the US Navy allowed them to expand.

They went on to design and produce sculpture, chairs, screens, tables and toys in plywood, including the legendary Eames Elephant now mass-produced by Vitra in a more cost-efficient and child-friendly moulded plastic. It wasn’t long before Herman Miller, the US furniture group, were persuaded to put many Eames plywood pieces into production by Head of Design, George Nelson. In the mid-1950s the pair moved onto experiments with plastic and aluminium and in 1956 the iconic Eames Lounge Chair was born, which quickly established itself as the only executive chair to have during the ’60s and ’70s. In 1957, they began to collaborate with their European partner, Vitra, who still produce many of their classic pieces including the elegant aluminium group office chairs.

DID YOU KNOW? On 15 June 2008 the US Postal Service issued a set of stamps paying tribute to Charles and Ray Eames and their designs.

——  The couple continued to work together in Southern California for forty years, resulting in exhibitions, films, photographs and numerous furniture designs. They also built their own innovative home in the Pacific Palisades, which continues to be a Mecca for architects and designers from all over the world. With their design principle to ‘make things better’, it’s easy to see why Charles and Ray Eames’s furniture designs continue to remain stylish, functional and coveted today.

the british way We focus

on SCP and their influence on current British design.

——  SCP has come a long way since it first opened its doors on Curtain Road, London in 1985. Founder Sheridan Coakley, fuelled by his passion for contemporary design, set out to establish a company that would sell classic designs as well as manufacture new products in the same spirit. This philosophy has left us with numerous modern classic designs such as Matthew Hilton’s curvaceous Oscar Sofa, Kay and Stemmer’s solid wood Agnes shelves and Donna Wilson’s colourful woven textiles. Quite a feat for a man who would describe himself as inherently ‘laid back’.

——  Keen to keep British manufacturing alive, Coakley uses UK-based craftsmen and suppliers wherever possible – something that we fully support. All of SCP’s ceramics are produced in Stoke-on-Trent, many of its textile items are woven in Wales on a hundred-year-old mill, and Coakley has even opened his own upholstery factory in Norfolk - Coakley & Cox Ltd. He prefers it this way, and so do we. 1986 was a breakthrough year for SCP. It was this year that they first exhibited at the Salone del Mobile in Milan with designs from Matthew Hilton and Jasper Morrison. After this show, the SCP brand became known worldwide, and they were seen as a pioneering force in British design.

FOCUS ON TOM DIXON ——  Here we take a closer look at Tom Dixon, the self-taught British designer & maker who’s previously headed up design at Habitat and Artek and now fronts his own eponymous design and manufacturing company. Born in Tunisia, Tom moved to England in 1963 and dropped out of the Chelsea School of Art to play bass in the band ‘Funkapolitan’. In the 1980s, following a motorcycle accident and bored while recuperating, Tom learnt how to weld – advancing quickly from repairing his motorbike to developing a line in welded salvage furniture. From here he went to work for the Italian giant Cappellini, where he designed the iconic ‘S’ chair. By the 1990s he had become a household name and was appointed Head of Design at Habitat in 1998. Since setting up his own design company in 2002, Tom’s designs – including the iconic Mirror Ball, Copper Shade, Wingback Chair and Beat Light – have become synonymous with great British design. His passions still lie very much in the invention and engineering of a product, with each design evolving from these processes to create something functional and new. Tom is anything but complacent and continues to move design forward, to rethink and revive the British furniture industry.

We asked the legendary British designer more about his designs and inspirations.

not often used within interiors, it is more commonly associated with electronics or sports equipment.

Q. How important is it to you to keep updating your collection?

By constantly innovating and taking inspiration from our nation’s heritage, Tom Dixon’s designs continue to remain fresh and contemporary.

A. Previously once a year, at Milan only, now twice a year – Milan and London in September. It’s important to make the process from design to production faster and faster to beat all the copies. Q. The Fin lights you launched during last year's Milan furniture fair show their inner workings on the outside – is the concept of turning things inside out one that you'll be pursuing?

DID YOU KNOW? Her Majesty the Queen awarded Tom an OBE in recognition of his design work in 2000.

A. I have previously been described as an invertebrate designer, in that I focus on the inside and the makings ahead of the final appearance of the product. With Fin, everything you see is purely functional. We have chosen to make the mechanics the hero rather than cover them up even to magnifying the inner LED workings with a giant acrylic lens. Q. Your choice of colour and finish is very unique and clearly continues to have industrial connotations – do you have any plans to introduce further key colours into the collection? A. Last year we introduced a new colour – blue – with the Fin Light which is interesting as blue is a colour
