The Flow of Air Spirits

There are five major elements, which consist of Water, Earth, Fire, Air, and Spirit. These elements are how all life is maintained, as they are essential for our life. These elements also carry their own Spirits, just as any living thing does, and they share it with us freely.

As I was hiking recently, I began to really pay attention to the air. I could feel the wind picking up around me, so I paused and closed my eyes. I could hear the leaves shuffling on the trees, I could feel my hair dancing around my face; it was so cooling on my skin. I took a deep breath and opened my eyes. As soon as I did, I saw a hawk flying right over me. I said, “Thank you!” as I exhaled and continued my nature journey.

I feel that at times we don’t pay much attention to the Air simply because it is a constant part of our day. Our breath is naturally repeating it’s cycle, constantly pumping in and out like a continuous drum. It is when we pause in stillness to truly feel its power that we connect to this element and the Spirits that spiral in a vortex of transformation and love.

The Spirit of Air is essential to our existence. It fills our lungs and replenishes our bodies, allowing us to flow through our path. We do not need to see it to trust that it is there. We feel it around us and through us; We Know. It is the wind that circulates through our atmosphere, traveling in all directions.

Close your eyes and take a deep breath. Focus and connect on your breathing. Feel the breath move throughout your energy. Inhaling the fresh power of air and exhaling the release, promoting renewal and recharging. This is the Spirit of Air.

There are so many energies that make up Air; communication is a key source for the Spirit of Air as it travels. It can not only move through the grass, tickling the blades as it shifts, but it can also fly through the skies. Air assists bird medicine to fly in needed directions, twirling the fallen leaves from their branches to go through a rebirthing cycle. It moves throughout the Earth, carrying its wisdom and sharing its Spirit to all. It is the connection between the Earth and the Universe, carrying messages from all dimensions and realms.

Air also represents what comes and goes. The cycles that we go through such as rebirth, presence, and death into a rebirth once more. It is the element of transformation. That things continue to flow and move even if they feel as though they are in a stand still. Air is always surrounding and moving through the past, the present, and the future. Knowing our truth and destiny path, Air will show us the direction and cycle, when we choose to listen.

Direction: EAST East is the direction of the rising sun. It is a time of birthing into a new beginning, the start of the new. East is ascension and creative, moving us through a new cycle as we soar bravely with our Air medicine familiars.

Substance: Clouds, Wind, Fog, Breeze

Properties: Whimsy, Travel, Communication, Activation, Purification, Release, Healing, Movement

Animals: Birds, Bats, Dragonflies, Butterflies, Bees, Pegasus, Dragons

Herbs: Birch, Mimosa, Fennel, Dandelion, Lavender, Palo Santo, Pine, Lemongrass

We can place an offering to the Air Spirits by working with them using incenses and smudges. It is the smoke that flows through the space that represents the Air element while sending an herbal offering to the Air Spirits in use, invoking the energies into the space while connecting to the Spirits of Air. How powerful is that?!
