Local salon endures hardship, returns to offer cutting-edge hairstyling

Salon Mimosa is a high-end salon in Maine that offers a comfortable and welcoming feel as well as the latest in hairstyling trends.

When Audrey DeCosta lost her husband, Dan, to COVID a little more than a year ago, her world came crashing down around her professionally as well as personally.

Audrey’s husband had been her rock. He started Salon Mimosa for her and handled the business side of the salon so she and her stylists could concentrate on being creative and demonstrate their individuality. The couple wanted their clients to feel at ease in a nonjudgmental atmosphere and know they were getting the best style for the money.

When Dan passed away in December 2021, Audrey wasn’t sure what the salon’s fate was going to be. She had never run a business by herself; she’d always had Dan as her business partner. With the strength and encouragement of her family and her salon family, she started to heal. She knew she could manage the salon successfully.

She returned to doing what she loved: making people feel great about themselves. Her stylist team (her family of four amazing women, Audrey calls them) rallied around her and so did the clients.

The stylists, Kaytlin DiBiase, Jessica Henriquez, Abbie Giannangeli, and Savannah Rice, continued their commitment to improving their skills and techniques through practice

and continuing education. Their dedication paid dividends as their commitment to the industry showed in every cut, color, blowout, or extension. Customers responded in droves and Audrey credits their efforts to the salon’s success.

“I thought to myself ‘Wow” I did this’ and ‘I can do this,’” she said. “But I could not have done this without the salon team family. It’s good to be on the right track.”

Salon Mimosa doesn’t believe hair has a gender. The staff takes care of everyone’s hair who walks through the salon’s doors, and its goal is to make all clients feel special, and as though they are part of family. They offer clients the latest in trends and stay on top of industry changes so that they can respond and use new and different techniques often.

“Continuing education is a must,” Audrey said. “Through forward-thinking and continuing education, our team is committed to … providing the comfort and confidence our clients need.”

While the salon has a dedicated following and many regulars, it strongly encourages clients to prebook their time with an appointment to guarantee customers get the time and day that best fits their schedule.

The salon is pleased to offer bridal hair styling and make-up application and can accommodate clients in the salon or offsite. Let Maine’s finest hair salon handle the hair and make-up details for the big day, says Audrey, who has been creating great looks for more than 30 years.

Audrey continues to travel in New England and beyond to beauty supply stores and other salons to teach color techniques, hair care, and to share her product knowledge with the Matrix brand. She also uses every opportunity to better herself behind the chair and behind the business desk. Her certification list is off the charts.

She believes she could not have achieved her success without the salon team, and she will always be grateful to all (her salon family and her natural family) for standing by her and offering words of encouragement.

She knows her high-end salon with a family feel would not be possible without the efforts of many. She remains grateful and committed to meeting clients’ continuing demand.

• Over 340,000 Mainers were invited through our radio stations and web sites to nominate and vote for their personal “Best of the 207.”

• Nominations and voting took place in October and November 2022 via secure web portal managed by NERUS Strategies.

• Ultimately, 3,432 businesses and attractions were nominated.

• To minimize ballot stuffing, voters were allowed only one vote per “Best of” category per day from October 31 through November 18. All ballots were tabulated using NERUS’ own proprietary software with numerous fraud metrics in place to ensure accurate, bot-free voting.

After being in business for 10 years he had an opportunity to expand into the big city of Portland. The expansion happened after the crash of 2008, when the economic impact on small businesses was heavy. The Paulin‘s team persevered and during that time opened up two more locations, one in Portland and one in South Portland. “The business growth was tremendous,” owner Mark Paulin said. “We brought our small town values of doing business into the larger city markets. People weren’t sure how to handle us at first, they thought we were too nice”. Paulin’s reliability and customer care made life-long customers.

The stores go the extra mile by offering quality, pre-owned vehicles at affordable prices. Paulin’s has its customers covered. Over the years

they grew the Paulin’s brand. In 2018, they purchased their fifth location in the city of Saco. Interestingly enough by the time this article is published they will have opened up their sixth location in Scarborough. Besides their vast knowledge of tires and auto repair, Paulin’s Tire and Auto has found much success in offering fluid film under coating as well as becoming a dealer for the intoxalock systems.

“We are a bit of a dinosaur in the industry,” Mark said. “There are businesses that just sell tires and there are businesses that just do auto repair. It’s a rare when you find businesses that can do both very well, and that has been the recipe for our success“. Mark Paulin has been married to his wife Meesha for 20 years. Throughout his life, Mark has enjoyed coaching football, basketball and baseball. He has three sons in college and one senior in high school. “ It’s been a great ride,” Mark recalls. “I truly enjoy the relationships we have with our customers and our employees. I wouldn’t want to do anything else in the world than what I’m doing.”
