Welcome to our second edition of Best of the 207 Magazine sponsored by Fidium Fiber. When we launched this ambitious project in 2022, we honestly weren’t certain just what the response would be. In 2023, the ballot count more than doubled, and nearly 4,000 businesses and attractions rallied their customers and fans to vote them best across 250 categories. It’s inevitable that when we release our annual compendium of Maine’s very best people, places and pursuits, there will be disagreements, some heated. Prideful local business operators will question why their firm didn’t earn gold, silver or bronze, especially if theirs is a legacy enterprise considered a leader in its field. We’ve come to learn there are multiple reasons the winners place as they do, including these:

• Our winners tend to have very clear positions in the minds of their patrons but, equally important, are well known as being category leaders even among those Mainers who aren’t their customers.

• Likewise, “Best of the 207” winners aren’t necessarily the biggest in their field, but they do have a passionately loyal customer base. They actively promote to their raving fans via social media and champion their support by encouraging them to vote daily.

• Lastly, “Best of the 207” winners truly believe they’re among the best at what they do, and that fervor spills over into their customer relationships which, in turn, generate higher-than-average voter participation.

We invited more than 340,000 Mainers to vote between October 30th and November 17th, 2023, and just over 145,000 ballots were ultimately cast. To prevent ballot stuffing, voters were allowed only one vote per “Best of” category per day via secure web portal independently managed by NERUS Strategies. Portland Radio Group played no role in ballot tabulation, and our sponsors were not afforded any special benefits. In fact, more than 90% of “Best of the 207” winners are not our customers, and there is absolutely no fee to participate.
