RESPECT | INTEGRITY | UBUNTU | POTENTIAL DEVELOPMENT
Nerina’s name comes from the indigenous South African flower, Nerine Filifolia. This delicate, yet enduring flower brings colour to the open grasslands and humid locations in the Eastern Cape, Transkei, Swaziland, Mpumalanga and the Free State. It takes three years for this bulbous to bloom for the first time during autumn – and likewise most Nerinas are rooted here in our precious home in Stellenbosch for about three years before they need to exit into the world and start to bloom in their respective careers.
Nerina hosted our first residents in 1968. The residence was only completed in 1972 and for the first four years the residents had to use the back entrance next to the bicycle stands, as the front door was not yet complete. Mrs Rabie was Nerina’s first residence head. Her dog, Brutus, was a beloved resident of the house and unfortunately passed a tragic death. He is laid to rest in Nerina’s soil where he still finds peace in the purple shade of our beautiful Jacaranda.
Mrs. Kritzinger joined Nerina as residential head in 1995 and had to bid us farewell in 1999. Tannie Annette du Plessis has been deeply planted in our hearts as residential head and house mother since July 1999.
Although greeting Aunty A after twenty years was a heartfelt and difficult goodbye, we are overjoyed to have Joy Petersen as our current resident head. Her name is true to her joyful spirit and with her honest and practical servant leadership she captured our hearts. Oh, the stories our walls could tell... Stories filled with love, tears, joy and growth. Since 1968 Nerina has been home to many. With every new face that she greets, her face changes as well. While striving to grow and adapt as time goes by, we also know that our firm foundation was laid long before our time and will stand long after we leave. We often say, “Nerina is such a big part of our lives” but in fact, for a little while, we have the privilege of being part of hers.
Today Nerina’s heart blooms with pride for our residence – a progressive and innovative home-away-from-home in the beautiful town of Stellenbosch. We stand for respect, integrity, Ubuntu and potential development. In this house, true to the roots of our name, Nerinas prosper and flourish.

Dear Nerina,
Coming back to campus after 3 months, I was suddenly reminded of just how much studentswalkeveryday Althoughittookmeawhiletogetusedtotheeverydaytrekof going to class, I realised that this was the thing I missed the most: strolling down Victoriastreet,observingthesun-speckedworldaroundme.

So the seasons of our lives flow
Sunlight. Smiling. Summer. Coffee-brown pillars support a luscious green roof of leaves that sway to the sound of upbeat chatter from students passing by The aroma of new beginnings fills the warm Stellenbosch air with a refreshing, hopeful scent. It is the start of a beautiful journey.
IGreen and sunlight greet our cobbled streets farewell and say hello to scarves and beanies, coffee and rust leaves Slowly, Autumn weaves its way into our busy lives It colours our trees and streets with notes of auburn and whispers of gold, beckoning us to pause. Always rushed and always late, Victoria Street compels us to catch our breath as we appreciate its breath-taking beauty It compels us to just take one moment
As the moment fades, so do the leaves. And our mighty trees are left exposed and vulnerable to the piercing cold Nights are long, days are short Students bundle up in oversized jackets and are comforted by the familiar path leading home.
Flowers. Bees. Mornings as sweet as honey. Sunrays dancing with the trees. Freedom and family calling. Friends eating scones and drinking tea. September sings its way into Stellenbosch and hums its vibrant tune to every street, plant, and student. It’s welcoming a new melody of change.
And so, we grow, with the ebb and flow of change that creates the rhythm of our lives. Day to day. Season to season.
Victoria Street Our friend that walks alongside us, every day, every season Victoria Street. A small, beautiful detail to the painting that is our university days

Walking through the Stellies town, exploring all the go-to places Learning all the tips and tricks, while meeting friendly faces Our journey ended at the Nerina door, with a surprised shout When we entered the building, and all the lights were out We walked in our mentor groups and came across four stalls Which were promoting our house values through the halls Integrity, respect, potential development

House Fund Disco!
Mia Ham
Walking into Nerina on the afternoon of Thursday 2 March, one would be blinded by sparkly skirts, glittery dresses, and shiny jewellery Dozens of bedazzled girls darting in and out of their rooms, preparing for the night ahead. Who doesn’t love a good disco?
For two weeks before the highly anticipated House Fund Dance, this event was a frequent topic among residents The questions of who to take and what to wear were ever in the back of Nerinas’ minds. Excitement grew as blind dates were organised, clothes borrowed, and glitter bought, with only a few days to spare before the fateful Thursday.
That evening, Nerinas and their companions arrived group-by-group at Centraal, the disco dance destination. After checking in and receiving food and drinks tokens, they had their pictures taken against a backdrop of bright coloured balloons. And so, the night officially began.
As more and more Nerinas arrived, cries of “Look at you!”, “I love your outfit!” and “Where did you get that skirt?” rang out repeatedly in the crowd. Dining-hall acquaintances greeted each other excitedly, welcoming buddies chatted again for the first time since February and classmates bonded over the work they should be doing.
Pictures taken and pleasantries exchanged, the next step was to redeem one’s drink token and join the dancing crowd. Soon enough, “Where are you from?” changed into “Where did you learn those moves?”, as the Nerinas and their companions lit up the dance floor Song after song was belted out and accompanied by some impressive movements. The Nerinas gave it their all. A ‘sokkie’ area even appeared during the Afrikaans songs.
BRUTUS Victoria Street Edition
Having danced themselves to near exhaustion, many were relieved to hear that the food was ready. It certainly did not disappoint. Delicious burgers were distributed to eager disco-goers, their food tokens ready The burgers were well received, surpassing the expectations of those who were wondering what Centraal’s food would be like. Having regained their strength, the Nerinas and their companions partied on. ABBA songs were shouted at full volume and Taylor Swift songs were performed to the best of our Swifties’ abilities.
As the night wore on and borrowed shoes became a little less bearable, the crowd slowly dispersed. Some headed to bed, some went in search of more food and some continued the party elsewhere. Whether they went home early or stayed out late, one thing was certain: this was a night not soon to be forgotten. The memories, like the glitter in their hair, would stay with the Nerinas for months to come.

IBN Summarised
Mia Ham
IBN (In-Bly-Naweek), or “Stay-In Weekend” happened on the weekend of 3-5 March. Residents were encouraged to stay in res for the weekend and fun activities were planned to keep them entertained This was an ideal opportunity for Nerinas to take a break from academics and spend some time with their fellow residents.
Friday
IBN started off with Nerina’s first-ever Sumo wrestling tournament. The brave fighters suited up (stuffed pillows down their shirts) and got ready for battle The objective was to push your opponent out of the ring. Various tactics were employed by the fighters Some dodged and let momentum work against their opponents, while others took more of a ‘bulldozer’ approach. Ultimately, the best fighter (Alexi Hugo) claimed victory as Nerina’s first-ever sumo-wrestling champion
Saturday
After sleeping in on Saturday morning, Nerinas could enjoy some relaxing Quality Time with each other in the rec hall. There were snack platters with a lovely assortment of fruits. Paired with the snacks, each Nerina could mix their own refreshing drink as well and listen to some music while getting to know their fellow residents.
Later in the afternoon, it was time for the highly anticipated Amiga picnic. Amigas wore matching colours to help them identify each other. After a week of writing notes and exchanging gifts, the seniors were excited to finally see if they guessed their Amiga correctly. During the picnic, amigas could answer some ice-breaker questions and just get to know one another better. The past week’s notes left on doors made for some interesting conversation.
BRUTUS Victoria Street Edition
Who doesn’t love a movie night? Although the Open-Air Cinema couldn’t quite take place out in the open due to the weather, it was still an event to remember. The Nerinas watched How To Lose a Guy in 10 Days, a classically hilarious romantic comedy. While enjoying the fantastic movie, Nerinas could grab some popcorn and MyBrew coffee – for free It was a lovely, cozy girls night, perfectly matching the stormy weather outside.
Sunday
Nerinas could sleep in once again on this rainy morning. Early afternoon, Nerinas gathered to walk to Wilgenhof for Paint the Prims. The prims of Dagbreek, Huis Marais and Helderberg all posed atop a table, while they were painted. The painting was of course accompanied by some wine, adding to the atmosphere Whether they could paint well or barely manage some stick figures, it was certain that the Nerinas enjoyed themselves.
The last event of IBN was The real sections of Nerina. Each section had 20 minutes to rehearse a 2-3 minute play, to be performed in front of the house. The theme was each section’s name. While many sections opted for a talk show style and creating caricatures of each section, some sections were beyond creative. The winning section, Hyde, performed something akin to an apocalypse movie, complete with some interesting dance moves

One of the very first traditions our beloved Nerina embraced, was a ‘marriage’ with a very special Men’s Residence. It started with courting: the love bird residences watched each other’s sport matches, enjoyed socials, and went on a memorable camp While the courting took place, Nerina’s best and brightest law students began the intricate process of setting up a wedding contract. Yes, a CONTRACT. Then, after weeks of preparation and brief moments of cold feet, the wedding ceremony took place. Twelve cars escorted sidence to Nerina Residence, her madly in-love tening to become puddles on the floor. The tfelt vows, and a joyful celebration. A night to a wife

And that, my dear friends, is how we became known as the “Trouvrou Koshuis”.

Hit the snooze button.
It might sound redundant, but sleep really is as important as everyone says. I know that as university students the word “sleep” is outside the realm of our vocabularies, but it ought to be one of our main priorities. A well-rested mind is sharper, quicker, and less anxious. Moreover, studies have shown that sleep boosts students’ ability to retain and recall information. So don’t feel guilty for going to sleep instead of doing last-minute cramming. Often, sleeping is the most productive thing you can do!
The best study method.
Of all the study methods I have tried, and trust me, I’ve tried a lot, this one is by far the most effective. Active recall involves forcing yourself to recall all the information you can remember without looking at your notes. By putting yourself in a similar situation to when you will be when writing your test, you are able to prepare holistically for your upcoming exams.
Emotional.
Reach out to someone
Often we can forget that we are not alone in dealing with academic stress Reach out to others who have done the modules you’re stressing about. In my experience, people are more than eager to share their wisdom If that is not an option, try reaching out to a friend or mentor for guidance. It is never productive to suffer in silence.

The Dos and Don’ts of a Blind Date
Rachel Kleyn
Something that was quite a foreign concept to me before arriving at Nerina, is a blind date Setting yourself up with a stranger seems like a fun idea, but it’s also incredibly brave (and, in some cases, possibly a mistake). Before House Fund Dance, I watched my roommate fret over who her blind date would be, as she switched from one guy to the next. Although I was not engaged in the process, I definitely got an outsider’s view on what you should and shouldn’t do when arranging a blind date. Since this year has still got a few dances up and coming, I thought I’d share with you a few of the lessons I’ve learnt.
So, what should you do?
NUMBERONE:LOOKSDOCOUNT
Yes, yes, I am aware that this is somewhat of an unpopular opinion But, before you call the editor and complain about how shallow I am, give me a chance to explain. Although a person with a pleasing aesthetic and a cute smile is handy, it’s not a must. A must, when it comes to looks, is that you really do have to know what they look like. It’s going to be rather awkward if you’re searching for them in a crowd of Eendrag caps, and you can’t tell orange from orange.
NUMBERTWO:TAKEOFFTHEBLINDFOLDBEFORETHEHOUSEFUNDDANCE
This point has been a topic of debate among many of my friends when discussing a blind date: should you meet them beforehand? My answer is yes. For starters, it gives you a chance to get all the awkward small talk out of the way, so that on the night of the dance all that’s left is to have a good time. And, more importantly (in my opinion), it gives you a chance to see if you really do connect with the person. If not, then you still have a chance to get off that train and on the next one.
NUMBERTHREE:CALLYOURFAIRYGODMOTHER
Bibbity bobbity boo! Whether your fairy godmother is your roommate, mom or best friend, get them to help you choose your best fit It’s important that you feel beautiful in whatever you’re wearing. In that way, you’re going to shine at the House Fund Dance! (And if your blind date really sucks, you can blame your early escape on your fairy godmother’s magic wearing off.)
BRUTUS Victoria Street Edition
NUMBER
FOUR:
WALK DOWN THE AISLE AND MAKE IT TO THE ALTAR
Slow down there, tiger! Even if your date is super cute, I don’t mean that we want to hear wedding bells on Day One. However, it is important not to get cold feet. SHOW UP. We’re all a little shy sometimes – and a little late sometimes (for me, all the time) – but it is so important that you do end up going and doing your best to have a good night. That’s just good character, and good character is what one finds at Nerina.
The Definitely Don’ts
NUMBER ONE: DON’T MAKE POOR DECISIONS
I know it’s a bit of a shot in the dark to ask this of university students, but I thought I’d try anyway. Although the matter of who your blind date might be is important, what is even more crucial is the person selecting your blind date. Make sure that it is someone who knows you well – what you like and dislike, your pet peeves, and your least favourite “manskoshuis” (I know you thought of yours), because that would just be a big no-no.
NUMBER TWO: DON’T BE THE STALKER
I know that burning urge to click on that request button on Instagram is just awful, but please be patient. Let them be the one to make the first move. It’s always more fun when you’re the one playing hard-to-get. Also, it can be somewhat of a dead giveaway when they don’t know who their blind date is and poof! – follow request from a random person who’s in Nerina.
NUMBER THREE: DON’T WAIT FOR PRINCE CHARMING
I’m sure you’ve heard of “W-rizz.” Interesting fact: “rizz” is actually derived from the word “charisma” – so essentially “W-rizz” means to have winning charisma. Some people have it, some people don’t. Please do not expect your date to be perfect. They might not bring you flowers (mine didn’t) or open your car door or tell funny jokes, but hey! Thank goodness everyone has more depth than that. Remember to not set the bar too high for Date One. If they’re not the one, you can put the bar down, but if they are, you can raise it the next time.
NUMBER FOUR: DON’T GO DIGGING IN THE ARCHIVES
Although some of us are blessed to have never been in a failed relationship, others of us are not so blessed Try not to spend your whole night recounting tales of your ex(es), as I can imagine that being quite off-putting, if not tedious. Try not to do too much of the “long list of ex-lovers”, and more of the “I’ve got a blank space”. Thanks Taylor.
Although each of you will have varying opinions on how correct I am, everyone will have to agree: a Blind Date is an adventure I hope that when you embark on yours, it is everything you dreamt of – and even a story to tell the kids one day.

Meet the New Newcomers’ Committee
Jule Booysen
The baton of leadership has recently been passed on to the newly elected Newcomers’ Committee that was elected on 7 March 2023. The Newcomer’s Committee is an elected body of 5 newcomers who represent the interests and concerns of the newcomers. Throughout the year, they work on various projects such as social and wellness projects, but their main project is the planning and execution of the Newcomers’ Dance.
Creating a feeling of home and inclusivity for all, is her goal. She applied for Newcomers’ Committee as it reduces her shyness and allows her to feel more comfortable when speaking to people While chasing a degree in BCom Mathematical Sciences, the newly elected secretary from Durbanville, aims to execute diversity through the fulfilment of her duties.
Her name means “Bringer of Light” which closely ties to her goal. She aims to illuminate the environments she moves in, but also lighten the burden of those around her. The BCom International Business student, believes that the Newcomers’ Committee should be the glue holding the group together through means of representation and trust.

Tayla Esau (Secretary) - One Way
Megan Jones (Treasurer) - 21 Jump Street
Residing in Stellenbosch, the BAccLLB student is happy to help people in any way to make their lives easier and Newcomers’ Committee fits that objective. Her goal is to turn Nerina into a joyful home for all
Her vision is to give back to the people she now calls friends and create community and sisterhood amongst them. The BCom Mathematical Sciences student from Durbanville really aims to ensure that everyone is seen and heard.
The BCom International Business student from Pretoria believes it’s important to “just be lekker and to keep it simple”. Her goal is to create opportunities for the newcomers to see each other often. When asked about her reasons for applying for Newcomer’s Committee, she spoke fondly of her vision to create a basis of support, community, and unity for the newcomers.

The Nerina staff are a part of everything we do within our walls. They do not only accept us with our flaws and imperfections, but they embrace us, even when they know our literal and figurative dirty laundry. They are a constant presence over years in the lives of Nerinas circulating through different rooms and different floors. Nerina is a short time in our lives, but for them, we are a short time in their part of Nerina’s legacy.
If the walls of Nerina could speak, the stories they would tell are those circulating in our dining hall during the last few hours of a weekday afternoon. Do yourself a favour - look past your weariness and pay a visit to the lively dining hall together with our staff Their singing, chattering and excitement will remind you of the true team spirit we have here, and the importance of everyone’s role in it.
And if you close your eyes in the afternoon sun shining in from the windows, you will hear the echo of a faint song: “Neri i h f l h f i d hip shows. We welcome one and all because together w

Beating Load Shedding Blues
Nina Germishuysen
Thanks to the despised phenomenon we call load shedding and the inability of those in power to keep the grid alive, we are all familiar with that sinking feeling each time the lights go out and we are left in the dark. No one knows how this will finally play out, but we can certainly choose how we react to the inevitable.
To start off with, load shedding, with all its negative connotations, needs a new name with a positive spin. How about load sharing? We’re all in this together. In our neck of the global woods, Eskom is feeding the rush to return to our ancestral roots - remembering where we’re from and who we are. The rest comes naturally.
Most people spend the entire period of darkness during load shedding frantically interacting with their phones, consulting load shedding schedules and trying to find solace in Instagram posts in a desperate attempt to connect with the outside world. In the end you only end up with a struggling internet connection, a massive data bill and a flat battery, adding to your frustration and draining your positive energy.
Load shedding, in fact, can be seen as an enforced digital detox. We’re all aware of the many health benefits to unplugging and shutting down devices for a few hours every day: better sleep patterns, less risk of tech-neck (stiff neck and shoulders due to screen time), giving your eyes a muchneeded break, and much less stress caused by devices constantly vying for your attention and expecting instant results.

So how can we use this time to battle the load shedding blues? We can start by spending quality, physical time with friends and family, having face-to-face conversations using real communication skills. Nothing tops candlelight or sitting around a fire to create atmosphere. Playing a card game and listening to live guitar music will round off a perfect evening. In need of precious me-time? Use this opportunity to go for a walk, read a good book or simply pray or meditate.
Focusing on the bigger picture of the effects of load shedding also helps us see things in a more positive light. Mother Earth certainly breathes a sigh of relief. South Africans have become much more conscious of energy consumption, accelerating research towards alternative power sources. Planning around schedules has taught us, among other things, to fill washing machines and dishwashers up to the brim before use and taking shorter showers
Furthermore, it has taught us both gratitude and empathy: to be thankful for the fact that we do have electricity (albeit sporadic) and more aware of what people with no electricity permanently go through.
If nothing else, having no power means that we have another kind of power in our hands: the power to use our intellect, resources, and common sense to toughen up – learning to find benefit in adverse situations and giving us a better overall approach to life
