2022
THE YEAR OF GROWTH

The year 2022 has been both a challenging and rewarding one. For most of us, it has been the first time (back) on campus and being immersed in student life! From new friends and classes, to incredible adventures both on and off campus 2022 has definitely been a year to remember!
The vision for the Senorina committee for 2022 is to display and celebrate the planned events and achievements, as well as the everyday candid happenings with a design and theme that aligns with the Nerina house values. The Senorina committee has the responsibility of producing a yearbook that is a representation of Nerina in its entirety as well as showcasing each individual Nerina and their achievements to the best of the committees’ ability.
The theme I choose for this is year is one of GROWTH and AUTHENTICITY, meaning the quality of being real or true. We wanted to celebrate the achievements of each Nerina, and the sense of community and belonging living in this house creates. This yearbook is a reflection of the jam-packed year, and a chance to see how every Nerina has grown and flourished, despite the challenges we have faced. May these pages bring you joy and remind you of the memories and experiences of living in and being a Nerina. May you remain ewig trou
You have given me so much during this year of serving you as prim! You have given me lifelong friends. You have taught me what it means to truly learn from challenges and tribulations. You have shown me what support from teammates looks like. Although my list of unread messages, storage space on my laptop and meeting schedule will be excitingly empty when this term ends, my heart is so, so full.
My favourite Nerina memory would definitely be the welcoming period of 2022. The innocent mischief of running around in Eendrag searching for our bike and ‘borrowing’ Helderberg’s bike during a social will always be some of my fondest memories!
WHAT I'LL MISS MOST ABOUT NERINA: I’ll most definitely miss all the little things! Someone greeting me in the hallway, schnitzel Wednesday, ‘quick’ coffee breaks and tooth brush chats!
Having spent four years in Nerina, it gets harder and harder to answer this question as time passes. However, I'm throwing it back all the way to my second year, pre-Covid. We had a social with Helshoogte just after Welcoming and it was 80s disco themed. The next morning, all of my friends (five of us) woke up in two beds, pushed together, still wearing our disco outfits from the night before!
WHAT I'LL MISS MOST ABOUT NERINA: Community. Knowing that, even during recess, you're never alone!
EDNA ROSSOUW VICE-EXECUTIVE LEADERI have many many favourite Nerina memories. One of these favourite memories was definitely the dance tutorial we had before house dance. I can’t dance to save my life but I had so much fun dancing and watching everyone have a good time.
WHAT I'LL MISS MOST ABOUT NERINA: The people, without a doubt. What a privilege to share a house with so many amazing people.
LEHANI SKEIN VICE-EXECUTIVE LEADERA memory buried deep in my heart is the dance session we had before house dance this year, where we swapped songs between kaptein, high school musical, gqoz gqoz and all the single ladies, but every person there was totally engrossed in the experience of dancing TOGETHER that we could all laugh at ourselves and lose ourselves in the moment. To me, it was an incredible picture of what togetherness looks like and it was a moment I will never forget!
WHAT I'LL MISS MOST ABOUT NERINA:
JESS HOLING NCC MEMBERWow – just thinking about all the things I’m going to miss makes a little emotional! Is it the way I’ve learnt that I will never be able to get work done in my room? Or maybe the way I know if I sit in the quad long enough, I’ll end up having a really good conversation. Maybe it’s the days when the chicken schnitzel is extra brown and crispy, or the 10 seconds before I reach the front door when I stare up at the painted Nerina on the wall and wonder how on earth I got here. Sunset balconies, 5pm light on my walls, hysterical laughter down the passages, feet in the fountain... more than the things I will miss, I don’t think there are many things that I won’t.
My favourite Nerina memories are Welcoming 2020 and midnight swims in the fountain. Welcoming was such a special time where strangers became family. I enjoyed every moment of becoming part of the House. Midnight swims in the fountain broke the heat of summer evenings, whilst building lifelong friendships.
I will miss the meaningful conversations with my roommate that stretched into the early hours of the morning and I will miss sitting shoulder to shoulder with my friends at the one picnic table that happens to be in the sun during lunch.
My favourite Nerina memory is when we avenged the stealing of our bike. Eendrag locked our bike in their tree and a few of us broke in, with a ladder borrowed from Dagbreek, to try and steal the bike back. This went horribly wrong as some Eendrag residents caught us and then proceeded to steal Dagbreek's ladder. All defeated we got ready to head back to Nerina, when we saw Eendrag's ladder in their dining hall. At the end of the night we stole their ladder and all their newcomers ties. We gave their ladder to Dagbreek and felt very victorious at the end of it all. We traded their ties for our bike the very next day!
WHAT I'LL MISS MOST ABOUT NERINA: I'll miss the people. Popping in to chat or have a coffee. Having multiple shoulders to cry on when things get rough and just being with friends that makes life worth living!
KARIEN DE JAGERFAVOURITE NERINA MEMORY:
My favourite Nerina Memory was Women's Breakfast 2022. It was such a lovely event. Watching people interact and be so happy with their families and their friends was so beautiful. It reminds us that we all come from somewhere and Women's Breakfast does the most in helping us stop for 2 seconds to appreciate the women who have made us who we are. Women without with, we would not get out of bed sometimes. Plus I was super cute lol.
WHAT I'LL MISS MOST ABOUT NERINA:
I am going to miss smiling at people in the bathrooms and in the kitchenettes. I am going to miss always having 'company' even when you're alone because you are constantly surrounded by people. I am going to miss Joy. I am going to miss being able to just sit on the balconies for a bit to take in the fresh air or the view of the mountain or someone and their significant other kissing by the backdoor.
TAVONGA CHIRIKURE NCC MEMBERFAVOURITE NERINA MEMORY:
Wow, I have so many Nerina memories that can be classified as favourites. But I think Welcoming in general would be my favorite memory. From being a newcomer in 2020, a mentor in 2021 and NCC in 2022. Each year was special in its own way.
WHAT I'LL MISS MOST ABOUT NERINA:
I will miss all the little things. Coffee in a friend's room. Greeting everyone in my section. Getting ready for dances together and just the laughter that can be heard in the corridors.
FAVOURITE NERINA MEMORY:
2019 Morning of hope where I met most of my friends.
WHAT I'LL MISS MOST ABOUT NERINA: The community and the family I've made in Nerina.
FINA MACUACUA NCC MEMBER LEANDRIE DU TOIT NCC MEMBERMy fondest memories in Nerina seem too infinite to single out only one favorite, but something I’ll always treasure will definitely be taking a midnight dip in the fountain whenever one of our friends turned 21 during the summer (and winter) months!
What I’ll miss most about Nerina is the beautiful people who are drawn to walk her hallways that have each, in their own way, helped to shape the woman I’ve become over the past three years. From the joyous laughter when taking a midnight swim in the fountain to the tears shed on the moutainview balcony. This house is so special. Make sure to make use of everything she has to offer.
TALYAH GREYLING NCC MEMBERThis is probably the most difficult question to answer - how can one pick a favourite memory from a three year experience in the best residence on campus! If I had to highlight one memory that had truly stick with me - it would be our amazing Vensters performance in first year! I really enjoyed dancing on stage in front of a massive crowd and even though we were exhausted after had performing for several times, the night was energyfilled and majestic! To top it off, our friend group slept on the mountain view balcony that night and shared our stories and highlights of welcoming! It was a wholesome experience
Nerina isn’t Nerina without its people! I will miss each and every person who has entered the door and has left a legacy behind. I’ll miss the greetings of friendly faces in the corridor, the small chats in the bathroom, the quick “hallo, tannie” to the cleaners and the “thank you” to kitchen staff! I’ll miss the beautiful view of Coetzenburg mountain from my room and I’ll miss having my friends as my neighbours! Even though it wasn’t always joy and laughter, the tears cried also made it worth the journey! My heart will forever beat for the house with the most beautiful quad, lovely fountain, best view of Coetzenburg mountain and the most amazing residents! I’ll miss shouting the last line of the house song to its loudest: “Nerina, ewig trou”. Nerina, I salute you.
ANATHI NTILASHE NCC MEMBER MARIFAVOURITE NERINA MEMORY:
Housewarming in 2021 after Covid19 - all the seniors present to welcome the newcomers- I remember walking away from the event with a sense of fullness.
WHAT I'LL MISS MOST ABOUT NERINA:
I will miss the old NCC team tremendously - their reliability and open heads and hearts has been a delight to work with and get to know intimately.
JOY PETERSON HOUSE MOTHEROn our 2nd NCC camp we had a massive bonding session where everyone just talked and shared personal experiences and it honestly made Nerina home.
WHAT I'LL MISS MOST ABOUT NERINA:
I will miss the people the most. Just being around the most beautiful souls with beautiful stories- what a privilege it’s been
NYAMA STRATEGIC ADVISORVision & Hope: For the Newcomers group to thrive together while being rooted in community, consistency and kindness "May we grow and rise together, being anchored in our respect for both ourselves and others, celebrating every victory big or small, of those around us and never ceasing to support and encourage each other throough every season."
We gave good luck sweets before exams to all the seniors. The mentors also periodically gave motivational notes to their sections.
The vision for this portfolio for 2022 is that the Senior Mentors play an equally important role as the Wellness Mentors but for the Seniors. The Senior Mentors should make themselves present and known in their respective sections and build interpersonal relationships with the Seniors and Newcomers of their sections. The Senior Mentors also closely assist the new Seniors that may enter Nerina, so that the new Nerinas can feel comfortable and find their feet in Nerina. The role of Senior Mentors is to lend an ear and shoulder to any Senior, or Newcomer, that may need it through the year. They are there to make the Seniors feel heard and an important part of Nerina. The Senior Mentors will not always be able to solve everyone’s concerns but they should be able to refer them to someone or a place that can help them. This ties in with the Nerina value; Ubuntu, because by making everyone feel heard and seen, Nerina will be a safe and cohesive place for all those living here.
The academic mentors assist, support, and challenge the first years. They give the newcomers reassurance and some stability in the time of transition from high school to university. As a newcomer, you know almost nothing of what to expect and the mentors can provide clarity, guidance and advice on university life and work. It also provides the mentors with an opportunity to exercise and learn leadership skills, relationship building skills and organization and planning skills. The goal for this project is to grow and provide opportunities to grow for the mentees and mentors, as both are so important in this symbiotic relationship.

Teamwork is very important. It is also important to be well informed about what’s happening on campus and to engage with students in order to better leadership structures and the relationship they have with students. Bonds breed strong leaders.
You cannot pour from an empty cup and that it is always better to give than receive.
What an amazing privilege to think back to welcoming of 2022 and have a heart filled with joy and a smile on my face, wow what a time it has been! I am so thankful for the opportunity of being part of this incredible journey and for each person who formed part of the team that made it possible.
Welcoming has taught me so many lessons, but the one thing that stood out is the importance of people and the relationships that we build with one another. I believe that life is a team effort and we cannot take on this journey on our own, we need each other. We might not remember all the things of welcoming, the memories might fade as the year proceeds and life sometimes gets the best of us. What we will however never forget is the people, the friendships and the love we have for one another.
I am so thankful for every single person that was involved in welcoming. I am so thankful for all the people I met, the ones I got to know better and the friendships that were formed.
To every newcomers, thank you for bringing your light to Nerina. My wish for you in 2022 is that you will know that you bear light and that light shines upon you - “eu carrego a luz e a luz brilha sombre mim”

At Light Night 2022 we wanted the Newcomers to recognise, experience and celebrate the light in themselves, in those around them and in this wonderful place we have the priviledge of calling home. It was indeed an evening of light, love and laughter.
Morning of Hope is the last official welcoming event for the newcomers and therefore also, in my opinion, the most special welcoming event. It is a perfect opportunity to end the busy welcoming programme with a relaxing and special morning where the newcomers can reflect on the past week and their journey at Nerina and Stellenbosch University ahead. Therefore, the goal is to create an environment where the newcomers feel hopeful for what is to come and be welcomed into their new home away from home.
Cara Jordaan Anje Strobos Sibbie Smith Simoné van EedenWe believe a house becomes a home when the people who live there learn to love and live together despite their differences. Our vision was to create a space where sharing, learning and loving could be facilitated. A space where we could respect and appreciate our differences and grow by have fun together as a house.

The plan for Vensters, and Drama specifically, was to create unity amongst the first years through creativity and arts. We wanted to establish excitement about Vensters and just work to create something we as the committee and the first years could be proud of
My vision for IBN 2022 was to create a weekend filled with events and fun ideas that will make each Nerina feel welcome and proud to be in our residence. I hoped that with IBN we can recreate the feeling of Welcoming and get all Nerinas to build new relationships with people whom they have not met before.
I hoped that we can make IBN an event that will excite Nerinas and give them new motivation for the rest of the term.
TO HOST AN INCLUSIVE DANCE WHERE THE EXCLUSIVE NERINA SENIORS CAN DANCE THE NIGHT AWAY JUST BEFORE JUNE EXAMS START.
Nerina Week 2022's vision was to create experiences that promoted the values of our house, built our ethos as a community and allowed every Nerina - current and alumni - to celebrate our house and the traditions that are apart of our legacy. Encouraging Nerinas to be a part of new experiences.

Our vision was to create a welcoming and inclusive breakfast to celebrate each individual in Nerina as well as the women that play special roles in their lives. This breakfast was to truly make each Nerina and their loved ones feel special, respected and valued by not only the house but the individuals who reside in Nerina. We also wanted the Nerina’s loved ones to be welcomed into our home and treat them for the day and to return their care by showing how much they mean to each Nerina.
To celebrate each individuals growth and achievements throughout the year.
To celebrate their journeys and their development and to make each Nerina feel special and appreciated.

To create an event that will create a space for entrepreneurs to promote their businesses. I wanted the whole house to form part of the market by asking each section to have a stall. Everyone likes to make a little extra money!
Goal: Initiate potential development within the committee and house and give each member a voice to spread their ideas and opinions in an open environment.
Toneelfees is a wonderful opportunity for the Nerina's to display their love and passion for the art of drama , as well as grow in their potential since it is a event that puts most people outside their comfort zones. Our main aim was to create a space where the actors could enjoy working together on a fun activity and at the same time represent the house in a drama competition against other PSO's and Residences.
Molassesêr is an event where newcomers can come together and bond as a group through music, dances and drama. The vision for molassesêr 2022 is to be a joyful event where newcomers can get to know each other and Nerina’s house values through the music, dialogue and the method of learning the routine. Molassesêr must be a relaxing event since classes have already started and the newcomers might feel overwhelmed in the new environment. The newcomers can let go of their stress and just enjoy the music and laughter.
My vision was to create a safe space for Nerina’s where they can socialize with friends, without having to leave res. Also to create a space that our ladies can use as an “escape “ when things get too much. Lastly, I wanted to create a space that feels like home.
My goal for Brutus this year was to focus specifically on Nerina and everything that makes our house, a home. Every edition was therefore centered around a specific Nerina symbol. Moreover, I wanted to make sure that Brutus had a different variety of articles to fit everyone’s tastes. I also wanted to make sure that the articles published were centered around Nerinasandtheirstories.
Critical Engagement offers a platform for Nerina to engage with and learn from one another in a manner that endeavours to go beyond the surface level. It aims to create a neutral and safe space for these engagements, where those present feel free to share their views, beliefs, and experiences free from judgement and respected while also remain respectful and sensitive to those around them. The vision of this portfolio is to extend our reach in Nerina and the Rubix cluster by utilising the platforms already at our disposal to engage in a productive way which is also conducive to growth. Furthermore, it is also envisions cultivating a culture of sympathy and sensitivity and aligns with the Nerina values of ubuntu and potential development.

The aim of the culture committee was to celebrate Nerinas in various ways, from Arts, Music and General Knowledge to the celebration of the various cultures we hold within Nerina.
The vision was to create an environment where people became aware of their actions and their carbon footprints that they leave behind. We wanted to remind people to think about their actions that impact the earth and easy and simple ways to become more green.
Vision: To create a community where our Nerinas can be creative in the garden and enjoy the outdoors.
Not only does it showcase unity as a house, it gives residents the opportunity to showcase their pride for the house and it creates a sense of belonging and makes one feel part of something bigger.
When returning from a long day of classes it refreshes the soul to enter Nerina with its beautiful quad and pretty hallways. It was our mission to decorate the hallways to make each Nerina feel like they are entering their home. We wanted each Nerina to be proud of the neat and beautifully adorned walls when they take the walk to their rooms. Our sections are named after famous streets in the world, for example Broadway, 21 Jump, Rodeo Drive etc and are decorated accordingly. Not only are the sections' décor representative of the streets, but also of each Nerina by displaying pretty flowers, birds flying and beautiful sunrises.

ow- what an incredible year! I have had the privilege of working with Elani and Alexi over the past year, and I don't even want to think about where I would be without these absolute champions!
Thank you for hearing me out, sifting through my random ideas, always being willing to help and doing everything with excellence and creativity. Managing Nerina's social media this year has been so much FUN because of you two!
Empowerment is about becoming stronger and more confident, especially in controlling one’s life and claiming one’s rights. The vision of the Empowerment Committee was that we wanted to empower everyone in Nerina to develop their natural abilities to their fullest potential. We wanted to ensure that everyone was confident enough in themselves to live fearless lives where they wouldn’t have to doubt their capabilities. We also wanted to encourage them to live their best lives authentically and intentionally. The aim of this portfolio was to take the residents of Nerina on a journey of self discovery where they could find parts of themselves that they can work on so that instead of dwelling on what they might not be that good in. They could use it as motivation to learn more about it and be the best versions of themselves.

My vision for Nerina Hockey was to create a fun environment where we could all enjoy the sport we love so much. I also wanted to create a space where our sisterhood can grow and grow closer together. This year our hockey did very well, we participated in the 5’s tournament with 2 teams, Nerina definitely showed up, we ended in 9th and 10th place with these two teams. We had a lot of first year in the group this year and they truly brought the “gees”. The Res league is going well this year, we’ve been winning a lot and it as been

My goal was to get as many Nerina students as possible to participate and to make it fun and enjoyable for them. Netball gives our ladies the opportunity to create new friendships and to unwind while having fun. It also creates a platform where people from various residences and age groups get to know each other and form valuable connections.
My vision for Nerina’s chess for 2022 was to get more people involved in chess. I wanted people to step outside of their comfort zone and be part of our chess team, even if you are still a beginner. We increased our number of teams in the res league from 1 team in 2021 to 3 teams in 2022. This is a perfect example of potential development and I am so proud of each Nerina that participated!
Table tennis is a project which takes place throughout the year. It is a fun sport to take part in and a good way to get to know fellow Nerinas and even people from other residences. It builds relationships and forms bonds which otherwise would possibly not have been formed. It was important that we allowed everyone in res to partake in their sport of choice. Many people enjoy table tennis and offering it in res, gave them the opportunity to play this amazing sport along with fellow Nerinas. There were 3 teams, namely a recreational, semi-competitive and a competitive team which ensured that everyone could take part in this sport and that nobody felt left out or not good enough.
