www.ncc.nsw.edu.au 4724 9000 reception@ncc.nsw.edu.au RTO 1223 FEE-FREE TRAINING for eligible students on selected courses (places subsidised by the NSW Govt.) Spring 2023 | October - December Your Story...

Please note, with COVID-19 still circulating in the community, as a Condition of Entry the College asks that all staff, students and visitors are symptom free and have tested negative if they have been exposed to the COVID-19 virus.

Your Story

“Your” and “Story” are two important words.

“Your” because your story is uniquely yours. Everyone has a journey that is in the end theirs and their own story to tell.

Whether it’s your journey to Australia as a migrant or refugee, or whether its your walk in the home town you never left, both stories are yours.

“Story” is the second word and, on reflection, always involves other people. While your story is yours alone it’s always also shared with someone sometime. Which brings me to community and Community College.

Community in the end is people together, connecting their stories and becoming a part of each others’ stories. When I try to put my finger on that part of Community College courses that lifts them beyond simply absorbing knowledge, acquiring new skills or demonstrating competence it is the people becoming part of each others’ stories in the classroom.

So between the pages here are many opportunities for you to participate and to add to your story.

This is the heart of the College and your invitation, in some cases as a fee for service program but also with support of the NSW Government fee free training if you experience any of a number of barriers to learning.

It is also that part of the College that is not so visible. So if you’re reading this and the College has been part of your story in the past let me invite you to share that story and help us to bring to light that important role the College has in community. Have a look at page 5 to see how you can do this.

A COMMUNITY PROGRAM THAT COMBINES SIMPLE CRAFTS WITH ENGLISH LANGUAGE SKILLS

As part of an effort to assimilate immigrant women into the broader community, Nepean Community College has collaborated with Catholic Care to provide workshops for women from Sudan aimed at teaching them the English language.

Funded by the NSW State Government, a number of women gather three times a week to learn sewing, and skills such as reading and writing. Integrating immigrant women into society is a crucial aspect of creating a diverse and inclusive community. It is important to recognize that immigrant women face unique challenges when it comes to integration. These challenges can include language barriers, cultural differences, and discrimination. One way to address these challenges is by providing

resources and support to help immigrant women adapt to their new environment.

Amany Ashaia, who is a tutor at Nepean Community College, runs the classes at Mamre Homestead Orchard Hills. “We teach them skills about organising time and discovering their strengths and weaknesses points. They learn English by learning these skills. The program helps refugees with many things including English lessons, citizenship lessons and now the

College also provides sewing lessons” she said. College Principal, Eric Wright said It is also important to create a welcoming and inclusive community that celebrates diversity and promotes equal opportunities for all.

“By working together to address the unique challenges that immigrant women face, we can create a stronger and more vibrant community for everyone”.

THE ICING ON THE CAKE

Meet Rosemary who has been an integral part of the College for the past 33 years spreading her cheer with her warm personality and creation of tasty treats.

Rosemary says the time has flown and is quick to point out that she doesn’t treat it as work because she enjoys it — “You love it or you wouldn’t do it”

Back in the day when her children were babies Rosemary looked at the College program for something she could possibly do at night. It was a choice between Chinese Cooking or Cake Decorating – so she chose to do cake decorating and was hooked from the get go.

Rosemary kept going back to lesson after lesson till it got to the stage when her teacher Dorothy said that she just couldn’t show her anything else. Then when Dorothy was actually thinking of retiring from teaching she asked Rosemary to take over her classes and she’s been teaching at the College ever since.

When Rosemary first commenced she soon realised she could start making money. People gave her orders which then snowballed and her hobby quickly became a little part-time job.

“A lot of the girls that have come to the course now have their own small business that they run. With facebook It’s so different from back in my day and it’s quite rewarding to actually see those who used to be students now running their own little business”.

She explains the Interest in nice little

What Rosemary likes about teaching at NCC

The companionship, friendliness, helping in the community and the people who generally are locals Rosemary likes teaching and believes in giving people what they want so they come back as repeat students and continue on for years just like she used to do as a student. “Everyone is so lovely – we’re community based, local and are all helping each other”

hobbies whether its cake decorating, pottery, or whatever — they’re all pretty similar – just different mediums. “It’s something that anyone can do and yes, blokes also come and give cake decorating a go — the men are wonderful — they often do better work than the women do.”

And her advice to those who may be considering teaching a class at NCC “You have to have your basic knowledge. I treat it as a one on one and I teach the way it’s easy for me to learn — it’s really breaking big pieces down into little pieces – it’s a bit like life”.

Come along, enhance your skills and discover the joys of cake decorating…After all, we all know the icing is the best part. Check out Creative Crafts in the brochure for details about the various cake decorating courses available this term.

MEET SUBA

Suba commenced with the College earlier this year teaching a number of computer courses as well as various Tech Savvy programs for Seniors.

Having initially migrated from Sri Lanka in 2016, Suba has mostly worked in the education sector prior to commencing at Nepean Community College.

Suba enjoys being in Australia a lot. “It was mostly for our kids that we migrated but now, I also feel a lot of difference because I’m getting to know more and more. It is nice what’s happening around the College – I am becoming more knowledgeable and I understand now that it is more about lifelong learning”.

Suba also finds the tech-savvy class to be so much more interesting. “I didn’t know too much about the senior citizens and I didn’t know much about the senior classes or what

you get out of it. So I was running through the Seniors Savers Card class and even those who had the card did not know that the cards could be so useful for them. We are also doing online shopping so teaching

Suba’s advice to others thinking of teaching at NCC

When you come as a new tutor you need to be more confident and more aware of learners needs. Whatever you do, just give 100 percent and do your best.

is a lot more fun – I am really enjoying working here”.

Suba is appreciative of the friendly and supportive staff and on top of that the learners – “all of them are very unique and for me to interact with adults, especially older adults, is something that is really new for me and I like it. I enjoy working with them – and I think that I am more kind of now socialising with them and I really enjoy the class. Every term I am getting to meet new ones and it’s good to get to know them and their learning needs. I try to make the session more lively and enjoyable and they often come up with a few jokes — they all have a great sense of humour” she said.

Introduction to Classical Nahuatl, language of the Aztecs

Nahuatl was the language of the Ancient Aztecs and dialects of it are still spoken in Mexico today. The Aztecs had their own hieroglyphic writing system which was mostly used to write dates, place and personal names. When the Spanish conquered Mexico in 1521 and introduced the alphabet, the indigenous peoples seized upon the opportunity it presented to record their legends, songs and histories, before much of their culture was destroyed by colonialism.

Today we can read this Aztec literature, which throws light on the preconquest and early colonial societies of Mexico.
