Some of you may know 10 year old Milo and his family’s fundraising efforts with Our Milo. If you don’t then have a look at his facebook page or his website http:// www.missionmilo.co.uk

Milo has a disease so rare that fewer than 10 cases exist in the whole world. He spent Christmas and the new year in hospital at the RVI, where it was revealed that sadly the hospital can no longer

help Milo any further, so when he was finally allowed home at the beginning of the year, it was for the very last time, he will no longer be admitted to the hospital, which means his last days are now a reality - a trauma that no parent should ever face.

This news really is heart-breaking, but it has seen the North East come together to help and support this incredible family, as we want

them to be able to make lasting memories together as no one really knows how long Milo has left. It could be a day, a week, a year, no one knows, but one thing we do know, Milo is a real life superhero who continues to defy the odds and prove the medical experts wrong time and time again.

So local people and businesses all rallied round to donate prizes to our Mega Raffle, which goes to

6

show that yet again, the people of the North East really are an amazing lot. We had some incredible prizes donated from Comic Con North East, Rexys Reviews, SAFC, NUFC, Playhouse Whitley Bay, STK Fitness, Millennium

Martial Arts & Fitness, Kuei-Ling

Martial Arts Morpeth and South

Shields, Shots North East, Nerd Arcade Nerd Fest, Blue EyedDevils Comics, Bede’s Helping Hands

Food Bank, NAAFI Break South

Tyneside, Kate Hargrave - Artist,

Bookmarx Bookshop, Bleading Marvelous, Going Potty with Sam, The Beehive Inn, The Alt Flower and Cake Company and more, helping us to raise over £1500 in two weeks. If that wasn’t enough, Kerry from our friends at the Geek Asylum has convinced Monopoly events to donate another incredible prize, passes to Comic Con North East and photos with every single guest, not only is this prize worth several hundred pounds but it really is a once in

a life time opportunity, so please visit the Our Milo facebook page to get tickets and help us raise even more money for Milo and his family.

A big thank you goes to Bede’s Helping Hands who arranged the Santa visit and donated a further £250, NAAFI Break South Tyneside whose veterans donated £110, North East Legion UK and Mini Pony Hire who all gave their time to visit Milo for his special

7

Christmas Day.

All the money will go towards helping Stephen and Laura create memories with Milo and his brothers Felix and Fox and their daughter Mia as well as taking the pressure off them with bills and even funeral costs, something which no family should ever face. But it doesn’t stop there, as each week you will find Stephen at Tynemouth Market where he sells the unique origami characters and various handmade items that the family have all made in their spare time. All of that money goes to Mission Milo which is the families’ dream of creating a holiday place where families with disabled children can go to - where they have access and everything needed so they can enjoy a short break; something we all take for granted. So please pop along to Tynemouth Market on a Sunday or you can order via facebook or the website. This will be Milo’s legacy, some-

thing to help other families in a similar position, which shows you how selfless Stephen and Laura really are. If anyone can help or support them in any way, please please don’t hesitate, get in touch with them direct or through us here at NE.

SOUTH TYNESIDE

Acclaimed rock and soul artist, Andrew Roachford, is preparing himself for an upcoming tour which will see him take in 21 dates throughout February and March, including the Fire Station, Sunderland, in the middle of his ‘Evening With’ soiree.

Having begun in the late eighties, Roachford has been on the road, many times, ever since, and this year’s travels is no different, only being halted by the recent, global pandemic, to which, for its part, scuppered the promotion of his most album release, the 2020 ‘Twice in a Lifetime.’

That release adds to the numerous works Roachford has in the music-verse, dating back to his self-title debut, in the

late 1980s, and which, although the industry has, and continues to change, on a regular, for the Londoner, it’s helped more than hindered.

“It has changed (the music industry),” began Roachford, “But, for me, it’s worked in my favour as the gigging is what keeps the people going, but it’s also quite sad that people don’t really want to, or own, CDs anymore.

“There’s a profound effect though, and there’s been difference’s in production, it’s now all done on a decent laptop.

“People, they still want to, and appreciate, good songs and music, and the songs, they need the staying power because, after

a couple of years, listeners, they move on.

“It’s the exploring of the songs and the need to be something about it, which keeps things right.”

As one of the most compelling and consistent artists produced on British shores, Roachford is someone who channels James Brown’s energy on-stage, whilst, on records, summons the spirits of artists from Al Green to Joe Cocker.

Now, with numerous studio albums, and a handful greatest hits collections, Roachford’s stock is one that has attracted that of Michael Jackson, Joss Stone, and Chaka Khan, whilst consistently touring on his own

13

and with other, established, and up-and-coming, quality artists.

Speaking of touring, his upcoming one, which begins in Nottingham on 15 February, and finishes in Lincoln on 30 March, is one that has been attributed to supporting the independent music venues, he adding of recent outings, and the upcoming tour: “I’ve done a few gigs, and a European tour, but it’s still pretty fresh for me and I’m looking forward to going ahead with this one, especially as I’ll be promoting my last album. “I never got the chance to tour that (due to covid) and it was a weird time, doing ‘live’ shows from your home, because it’s just a one-way thing, you don’t get the crowd response that you do in venues.

“The European tour itself, that was a decent-sized one, whereas with this one, it’s more intimate, and in support of the independent venues.

“We all took a huge blow during covid and, although it’s recovering, there’s still venues closing, which is sad because they are what’s needed for the young, local, upcoming talent.

“Not everyone can play at the large venues, or in places like London, so we need to somewhere to play, to start out.”

For the past 10 years, he has been part of Mike + the Mechanics, recording with Mike Rutherford’s post-Genesis band, playing live with them across the world, including the upcoming, UK and Germany tours. Meanwhile, his latest album, ‘Twice in a Lifetime,’ registered

an impressive, five weeks of Radio 2s A List airplay for the hit single, ‘High on Love,’ as well as the support for singles ‘Love Remedy,’ and ‘Gonna Be The One,’ as the release was crowned, Album of the Week. The album itself is done by someone who knows his craft inside-out and was produced by Jimmy Hogarth (Paolo Nutini, Duffy and Amy Winehouse) whilst featuring members of

14

Winehouse’s band, as well as a duet with UK Queen of Soul, Beverley Knight.

“(Beverley Knight) we’d always spoke about it and she jumped at the chance,” continued Roachford.

“Doing this, it’s brought us closer together, both as individuals, and as artists and I’ve huge respect for her, both as a person, and an artist herself.

There’s a resilience, and being thick-skinned, which is needed in this industry, and she has all of that.

“As for this tour, it’s going to

be fun, and I’m looking forward to visiting some of the smaller towns, the intimate venues; they surprise you, which makes it all special, worthwhile, and, because of the closeness (of the gigs) there’s an instant connection with the crowds.”

The tour has been put together in support of the independent venues trust, and Roachford will have support from Acantha Lang, a native of New Orleans, and a rising star in the world of soul music.

‘An Evening with Roachford’ takes place at the Fires Station,

on Saturday 4 March, tickets for which are available from https://sunderlandculture.org. uk/events/an-evening-withroachford/

As a founder member of 10cc, where he is the co-lead vocalist, and bassist, Lancashire lad, Graham Gouldman, has certainly seen, and pretty much done, it all.

Even now, in what should be the twilight of a career spanning into its fifth decade, he’s showing no signs of stopping, the last, near ten of those years has seen the iconic musician bring forth his ‘Heart Full of Songs’ masterpiece. That in itself was put together purely for his own enjoyment, and for him to perform his music in their simplest, acoustic form –that’s not done too badly either. Alternating with ease between his two, musical loves, Gouldman, who tours with Iain Hornal, Keith Hayman, and Dave Cobby, is much a sight to behold.

“I’m very much looking forward to taking ‘Heart Full of Songs’ on the road again where I get to play and talk about some of my old songs, and explain their origins, but also play some new material that I’m very proud of,” began Gouldman.

“I’m also looking forward to working with multiinstrumentalists/vocalists, Iain Hornal and Keith Hayman, both of whom are my 10cc bandmates.

“On percussion we have Dave Cobby, who also happens to be 10cc’s production manager.”

Gouldman’s upcoming tour will the see them take in some

sixteen dates within just three, March weeks, beginning with Bury St Edmunds (6) and Sunderland (7), before wrapping up in Shrewsbury (22) and the 1occ co-founder’s home-town of Salford (23).

“We’re used to it and do try to have a day off every four,” explained Gouldman.

19

“But, at times, we’re also at the mercy of venues, hence those days of seemingly, long traveling.

“That’s when we’ll often do a few hour worth of traveling on the night, straight after gigs.

“You accept it though as its part of the job which we do.”

It’s true what they say though, you do take the rough with the smooth, and, even as a musician, there’s the ‘perks to the job. With Gouldman, he recently had the opportunity to work on his new single, with rock royalty, cofounder of Queen, Sir Dr Brian May CBE, or ‘Bri’ as he is to those in the know.

This was regarding a recent offering of Gouldman’s, ‘Floating in Heaven,’ which caught the attention of May, who has both a PhD in astrophysics, and a longstanding passion for astronomy as a whole.

The single itself would be used to mark the unveiling, to the world, of the first images released via NASAs James Webb Space Telescope.

“I enjoyed working with Bri (Brian May) and I think it was an

exciting project, for both of us,” added Gouldman.

“I was, literally, enchanted, by the Space Telescope, and what it was doing, and I wrote the track, ‘Floating in Heaven’ because of if, which everyone loved.

“It’s certainly been a real pleasure to do, and, collab’ing with others, that’s something I very much enjoy doing, and something I did a bit of, online, during the pandemic.”

For sure, it’s all about keeping busy, however, and that’s something which Gouldman and his 10cc bandmates, are more than acquainted with and which, since emerging from that of recent years, has certainly kept him going, including behind the scenes.

“Gigs, they were pushed forward, so last, and this year, has been very busy, for a lot of artists,” admitted Gouldman.

“I definitely did a lot of work during the pandemic, converting materials to instrumental.

“I can’t sit around, idle, so, I just filled in my time; it’s also important for you mental health,

to just, keep going.

“Even this year, we’ve got a lot on, touring in the UK, and in Australia and New Zealand, whilst also finding the time to put together a new album later in the year as well.”

The comedy scene, on Tyneside, and across the north-east as a whole, is a vibrant one which continues to delight, and bring forth the constant need for fun and laughter, to the masses.

Amongst those, stand-up artists, with lofty, yet credible ideals of being ‘the next big thing,’ is Hebburn native, 29 year-old, Simon ‘Si’ Beckwith, a man of many talents who’s been a name, of several talents, around the region for a few years now.

Now, having released his debut, stand-up show, ‘Get Lush,’ pre-

pandemic, Beckwith used the enforced, time away, to continue writing material, and would pen that of his current offering, Bricks.’ In a continuation from one, to another, ‘Bricks’ is the comedic tale of Beckwith taking to life of becoming a step-parent, whilst the previous, ‘Get Lush,’ is based upon his becoming a better person. Both shows have been wellreceived, with Beckwith having performed at numerous venues across the region, and beyond, and is able to count on the like of The Stand Comedy Club (High Bridge,

Newcastle), Alphabetti Theatre (St. James’ Boulevard, Newcastle), and Laurels (Whitley Road, Whitley Bay), to name but a few.

As Beckwith proudly say however: “I’m keeping busy, so I can’t really complain.

“I’ve always harboured a desire to do comedy, and it really has been a great job for me.

“There’s been numerous, side-hustles, work which has come my way because of it, and it’s mad because this is my life, and I’m very grateful.

“Especially as I’m just a lad from

24

Hebburn, but, I really enjoy what I do.”

Among those side-hustles has been some media work, for a number of entertainment outlets across the region, and, in recent times, has produced podcasts like, ‘The Greatest Film You’ve Never Seen,’ with Ken McGuiness, and the most recent, current conversationalist, ‘Mosh Pet,’ alongside Ellie Kumar.

Beckwith and Kumar use this masterpiece, to discuss a joint love of alternative music and cultures, the gothic lifestyle, and heavy metal music.

After all, Beckwith did say that he was keeping busy and, for him:

“Mosh Pet, that’s the main focus (away from Bricks, and stand-up), right now.

“It comes from my love of heavy metal music, and Ellie (Kumar), she really is a kindred spirit when it comes to things like that.

“But, I’ve done, with others, podcasts over the past few years.

“As for the written side, that’s pushed more towards the creative side things, script and stand-up mainly.

“There’s a similar discipline between them; techniques, rules, and materials, and yes, there’s a lot of crossover, but it’s down to your understanding of the mediums

that matter.”

As for his two, personal, standup comedy shows, and with a promise of more to come in the not-to-distant future, ‘Get Lush,’ and ‘Bricks,’ were brought to the fore, either side of the recent, pandemic.

“The first one, it’s about being a better person, whilst the second is about being parent,” continued Beckwith.

“There’s a natural progression between them, and that’s been ideal, with the second, a much better show than the first.

“With ‘Bricks,’ there’s points in the show where I talk about my daughters’ life.

“We’re all quite open, and I’m very

conscious of that.

“She even wrote a joke for the show, which is great.”

Beckwith’s daughters’ interest in her father’s work is strong enough so that she even has the lego-version of his poster, on her bedroom wall.

“Yes, it’s amongst all of the k-pop posters; with the joke though, when I told it, people laughed and clapped.

“I managed to get the moment recorded and, when I showed it to her, she cried at the response it received.

“With ‘Get Lush’ though, although I’m happy with it, we never did much, due to the pandemic, but we got some really great feedback, but yes, there was plans to do more with it, including the (Edinburgh) Fringe.

“I don’t find myself struggling with ideas though, it’s just making sure that I see them through.

“With ‘Bricks,’ I performed as Laurels (May) and The Stand (October) last year, and now we’re heading to the Alphabetti, in March.

“I may look at taking it the Fringe, so it’s down to recording, and minor tweaks, whilst at The Alphabetti, I just want to perform it at a venue which I really love.

“Overall though, I do try and work on at least one, new show

25

a year, and yes, there’s a few, new concepts in the pipeline.

“Concepts with which I always try to draw on personal experience, my life, and from a certain point of view.”

Si Beckwith brings his latest, stand-up show, ‘Bricks,’ to Newcastle’s Alphabetti Theatre, on Saturday 4 March 2023, tickets for which are available via https://www.alphabettitheatre.co.uk/copy-of-neilharris?fbclid=IwAR2u6tgx3vDbGla4F6QML_cgmUOs2KcJCg1Yxmh3yqohUESjkI1Ch4wgwY

We have teamed up with Nerd Fest for this issue’s main feature ahead of their next event held at the Boiler Shop in Newcastle on Easter Monday, 10th April 2023. Following on from the success of last year’s Fright Fest Michael has went the whole hog to make this event even bigger…literally, as this time he has 7”1 actor Ian Whyte, best known for his roles in Star Wars, Game Of Thrones,

AVP and Prometheus, as a special guest, happy to chat with fans, pose for photos and of course sign autographs. The other thing that Michael has went big on is the promo, this time enrolling the help of all of the fantastic costumers and cosplayers who attend the events to feature on his giant promo banner, the best of which have been chosen to appear in this very feature. Every show seems to get bigger and better, what is new for 2023? Well we are broadening our horizons and bringing our popular Nerd Fright Fest Halloween event to North Tyneside and into the Parks Sport Centre! We feel north

Kelly - Willow Cosplays

Name? Kelly / Willow Cosplays

Age? 30

Where are you from? Newcastle

Main Costume ? Hawkeye (Kate Bishop) and Spider Gwen

Other costumes you have/do?

Recently I’ve done Sylvie/ other Loki variants, Arwen (Lord of the Rings), Raven (Teen Titans), Wolverine (Hellfire Gala) and Yelena (Black Widow). But I have

a wardrobe full of other costumes, with a lot of half-finished ones in the works!

Are you part of any costuming groups?

I attend conventions with “Castle Coven Gaming” and charity events with “North East Avengers”.

How did you get into costuming/ cosplay?

It’s something I’ve always been interested in, and once I started attending more conventions with

Castle Coven, it was the perfect excuse to get more costumes.

What was your first ever costume/ cosplay?

I think it was Rukia from Bleach back when I was in High School.

How often do you go to events or cons in costume/cosplay?

As often as I can! I try to attend all the local cons. And go to MCM London at least once a year.

What has been your favourite

34

costuming moment so far?

Performing on the MCM fringe stage with my dance partner Widow The Witch!

Do you make your own costumes or is it bought?

A mix of both. A lot of my existing costumes are bought, but I’m working on making more for myself in order to enter convention competitions.

What advice would you give to anyone wanting to get into costuming/cosplay?

Don’t worry about looking 100% like the characters! It’s more fun to put your own twist on things.

Tell us 3 random facts about yourself?

1. I have a black belt.

2. I’m learning archery. (But always use fake bows and arrows for my Hawkeye cosplay!)

3. I studied criminology/ sign language at uni.

What is your favourite fandom? Marvel (with Lord of the Rings as a close second).

Do you have a prized position/collectable?

A signed copy of Hawkeye by David Aja, complete with a doodle of Kate Bishop.

What is your favourite computer/ arcade game?

Shadow of Mordor

35

Brian Cox - two Face

Name? Brian Cox

Age? 40

Where are you from? Newcastle

Main Costume? Harvey Two Face version 1

Other costumes you have/do?

I have Two versions of The Joker with a third in the making for a fan film. This is a darker version inspired by the deleted Joker scene from The Batman. I also have another Two Face. This time with a more detailed approach to the head as I wanted to show a bald side other than my own receding hair line lol. I also have a Marvel Sandman from Spider-man in the making and also Doctor Octopus.

Are you part of any costuming

groups? I’m not actually. Other than a few Facebook groups. It would be nice to have a group to go around to conventions with.

Maybe DC Villains group. That would be so cool.

How did you get into costuming/ cosplay?

After attending a Comic con at The Metro arena. I was so blown away by the ingenuity and imagination of those there. So I gave it a go and found a love for it.

What was your first ever costume/ cosplay? My first ever really would have been when I was a kid. I had an Ewok costume with spear.

How often do you go to events or cons in costume/cosplay?

Two a year but at the moment, hopefully will be attending more this year and much bigger ones too. As I have many fellow cosplayers that I hope to meet as we live very far apart.

36

What has been your favourite costuming moment so far? For me it was working on my Doctor Octopus cosplay which will be out later this year. It isn’t quite finished yet but seeing all the issues that iv had with the arms finally overcome has been a real joy as I was doubtful it would end up finished.

Do you make your own costumes or is it bought? I make my own. I’d buy an outfit maybe. For example the Joker was all bought as its normal clothing as with the suit for Two Face. Yet they will be altered. Doctor Octopus was all made as would any costume that is a bit out there. The Two Face suit was all burnt up and painted and the mask and face made up from a silicon face, bald caps and paint work with a wig. Or rather half.

What advice would you give to anyone wanting to get into costuming/cosplay?

Great question. Pick a character you are passionate about and literally go for it. It doesn’t matter if its poor to start with or isn’t what you’d hoped for. Live and enjoy the experience of planning it, creating it and taking it out there for everyone and yourself to enjoy. Learn from any mistakes and develop you skill set and your

love for cosplay further. Create your own character and personality through it all.

Tell us 3 random facts about yourself?

1. I hate reality TV

2. I love metal as my favourite type of music

3. I studied as an Actor and Director and produce Fan based projects Here in Newcastle.

What is your favourite fandom? Doctor Who. Without any doubt. Love it so much. Perhaps a little too much lol Allons-y

Do you have a prized position/collectable?

I have a framed autographed photograph from Tom Baker. The

Fourth Doctor written in 1974

Or a holy grail item that you would love to own?

A life sized Dalek. The Red one from the first Dalek movie is my favourite. I’d love one of those.

What is your favourite computer/ arcade game?

For me I’d say Super Mario Bros. Growing up with that as a kid was great. Still is today. It’s so amazing!

How can people follow you?

self?

1. I keep tarantulas

2. I occasionally breed Praying Mantis

3. I’ve worked for almost 10 years at various game studios all over England, but being at a studio back in the North East has been the best

What is your favourite fandom? Probably Star Trek (TNG - Enterprise era). It’s definitely been the most chill in my experience.

Do you have a prized position/ collectable? I have a lot of Final Fantasy VII memorabilia. From limited edition books and figures, perfumes, jewellery, games consoles, soundtracks, to a Panasonic mobile phone that has no use over here, but is the same model Cloud and crew use in the games/movies.

Or a holy grail item that you would love to own? I’d love to own a Playstation Net Yaroze, it’s a consumer level Playstation 1 dev kit that sold in the Japanese market. It’s a neat piece of gaming history. That or one of the PS2 TOOL dev kits, just because they look cool.

What is your favourite computer/ arcade game? There’s a few. Crash Bandicoot 2 is probably the reason I’m in the career I am, but I’m a huge Final fantasy VII and Kingdom Hearts fan, so as you can imagine, I’m having a GREAT time with the current FFVII Remake project.

I felt special to be alongside Youtubers such as the Yogscast and a bunch of gaming journalists, some of which were flown in from America

Do you make your own costumes or is it bought? Master Chief is about 40% my work, mainly the paint and detailing the rest is commision work from some friends

T45 Power Armour was an Ebay snag, the original owner had it as a Darth Vader crossover so it was all black with a different helmet, I restored it to its former glory

40

Crucible knight was all my work, this was my first entirely self-made cosplay and it took me about a month to make at around 4hrs a day work, I wanted to get it finished to enter it into an upcoming competition but I didn’t win Subject Delta is about 85% my work, the under suit is a boiler suit that I attached fake leather with a sewing machine (was a struggle), the drill operates with a mini power drill inside (I had some help with that)

What advice would you give to

anyone wanting to get into costuming/cosplay?

Just do it, don’t let anyone bring you down or make you feel inadequate, as long as you feel you have put the effort into it, it will be amazing and the cosplay community is very welcoming and supportive with WHATEVER help you need

Tell us 3 random facts about yourself?

1. I have a cupboard with like 40 prop weapons in it

2. I’m left handed

3. I keep some cosplays on mannequins (terrifies the letting agents)

The initial thought process with this was to set up a new website, and conduct interviews with authors, maybe review books I’ve read, and so on, maybe even get a guest blogger on-board with it. Now, don’t get me wrong, there was interest, but not enough to produce a launch in all honesty; that’s fine, no big deal, I’ll think of something else, I always do, and here we are, a new series for NE Online Magazine, where I interview local authors, talk about their lives and works, but I’ll also provide something akin to this each issue as well.

This will be an opinion piece, of sorts, of what’s going on in my own literary mind. Not necessarily a self-promotion piece, although I will mention, on occasion, what I’ve done or will be doing, but more about the books I’ve read in recent months, books I’ve bought, and a brief about the author you’ll find interviewed over the next few pages.

My bookshelves, they are stacked, but they aren’t anywhere near as full as they have been down the years, I recall one place I lived (when I was at university), there was three, full bookcases, downstairs alone; now I’ve just got one bookcase, and a small wicker stand which has my pride-and-joy John Grisham/JRRR Tolkien, and

Tove Jansson books.

The rest, I’ve everything from football/boxing/cycling, through art (fantasy/manga), music, journalism, sport psychology, comic, biography, thrillers, and fantasy and on and on....

Yes, the list is endless, it really is, and I’ve read so many more besides.

Favourites, before the past few months say, I’d have gone with Robert Harris’ ‘The Ghost,’ (a

political thriller based around the writing of the memoirs of a prime minister, published 2007), Stan Nicholls’ ‘Orcs’ trilogy, Trudi Canavan’s ‘Black Magician’ trilogy are all up there, but, to be honest, when I took a chance and went outside my usual box, and yes, it was a football book, a new favourite emerged.

I have to give credit to author, Steven Bell, who’s first book was entitled ‘From Triumph to Tragedy

56

The Chapecoense Story (2019),’ for the research and brilliance within the pages of it. I do have a few books of football clubs/players from outside of our shores but, as I’ve said to a friend, just recently, they’re more for research purposes at times (I should read them), but this one, it hit everything for me. Chapecoense are a Brazilian football side whose rise from the lower echelons, to the top of the Brazilian game was to be marred by tragedy, on the eve of their biggest game; the book itself is intertwined with tales of travel, world cups, and so much more –it’s brilliant, and very much a new favourite of mine. Anyway, I’ve digressed a little just there, so, back to this, new series, and, first up in the local authors is that of Margaret Hedley, who you’ll read about over the coming pages.

Margaret has two books to her name, and is someone I came about, by accident really. However, because of shared interests, I was immediately drawn in.

‘Women of the Durham Coalfield in the 19th Century: Hannah’s Story,’ and Women of the Durham Coalfield in the 20th Century: Hannah’s Daughter,’ are both well-

researched, excellent reads. Either standalone, or, to be honest, best read in succession, it is the tale of a family history, Margaret’s family history, in the pit mining villages of County Durham, during the 19th and 20th centuries. Therefore, for me, it was the County Durham pit villages (I was born in one), and the family history/research element (I do my own and would love to turn a book or two from it); for yourselves though, have a read about her, and be sure to check out her material – there’s even a promise of more to come.....

I’m also delighted that Elaine Palmer has added contemporary literature talks to her amazing repertoire, and, with the first of those later this month, we introduce her, and them, over the following pages – it promises to be a special evening indeed.

57 –

Over the past decade or so, County Durham author, and genealogist, Margaret Hedley has seen her life take on the guise of, well, other people’s lives.

The former teacher, of more than three decades, whose last employment was as a Head of Year at the Biddick School, in Washington, made the transition from education to genealogy, when following her passion for family history.

That passion, of what was her initially her own family, and dating back to the mideighties, has led to her helping others find out more about their own, family lines, in what is a timeconsuming, yet interesting, and rewarding, line of work to be in.

This would eventually lead to Mrs Hedley, who’ll be the tender age of 70 this coming summer, publishing, via The History Press, two books, based on her family story – Women of the Durham Coalfield in the 19th Century: Hannah’s Story (2019), and Women of the Durham Coalfield in

with Margaret Hedley

the 20th Century: Hannah’s Daughter (2021), exciting many.

“It was back in 1984 when I began tracing my own family

story,” began Margaret, when discussing how it all began for her.

“There was excitement in learning to use census

58

records to discover where my ancestors were living.

“There was also satisfaction in locating them in baptisms, marriages and burials in the parish.

“I soon realised however that there must be more to family history than an endless lists of names, dates and places, but that’s all family history is - unless you dig a little deeper.

“I was interested in finding out what my Victorian, female ancestors, were doing during the 1800’s.

“Most were married to coal miners in the Durham Coalfield, but I wanted to know more about their lives.”

And that’s exactly what Margaret did, she learnt more about now only her family history, although that is the main crux, but also the pit mining villages of County Durham in which

they were connected, and the everyday people in which they resided.

With the two books covering the families, and lives of some five generations of her family, going back to that of William Hall and Ann Milburn, in the 1780s, Margaret’s great, great, great grandparents, the first of the two books covers exactly what it says, the Durham Coalfield in the 19th Century.

The first, with a foreword penned by writer and

broadcaster, John Grundy, takes the reader on a journey, the journey of Hannah Porter (nee Hall; 1820-1901), Margaret’s great, great grandmother, focussing on the role in which women took within the communities of those pit mining villages.

It was to be a story that both led to, and helped her with the dissertation of an MSc History degree, at Teesside University, back in 2000.

“I was delighted when I found it (MSc History) had a focus on family and local history,” explained an enthusiastic Margaret.

“This was my opportunity to write my female ancestors into local and national history.

“These women hadn’t been written out of history, they had simply never been written into it.

“When I was considering

59

a topic for my final dissertation, I decided to focus on the female relative whose history I knew best.

“The story of Hannah Porter, my paternal great, great grandmother had been kept alive by my grandmother.

“She would tell me of her own childhood, and spoke of her parents and grandmother, Hannah.

“She also showed me belongings, handed down from Hannah.

“From this I was able to build Hannah’s story and, by extension, paint a picture of how women in her situation would have lived.”

Hannah’s family, like many people’s ancestors of that time, lived through a grim, yet significant period of labour, and of women’s history, however, because of illiteracy, written

documentation of the time is hard to come by.

This meant that, for people like Margaret, and other genealogists, any information gathered was done so through the written record of men, and of government records, which have been collected throughout the past couple of centuries.

Fortunately for Margaret, she was able to put a good chunk of her family history together when, in the mid-nineties, she took the opportunity to conduct a video interview most genealogists, and the everyday person in general, would be both proud, and jealous of.

In the introduction of her second book, for which the foreword was penned by non-other that esteemed Northern Echo features writer, Chris Lloyd,

Margaret said; “I carried out a video interview with my grandmother, Hannah’s daughter (Isabella Carr, 1902-97), in 1995, two years before she died.

“The facts she gave me have provided me with the raw material and have been a great source of inspiration.”

But what was life back then, during the 1800s, and in the pit mining villages, of which there was many around the country; we all know the first half of the 1900s, for which the second book takes on, was blighted by years of depression, and both the First, and Second World War.

Before that however, and with Hannah being born into the industry herself before going on to have some seven children, bringing them up whilst her husband was in Australia for six years, and with the trials and tribulations life brought them in the 19th Century, Margaret says that: “The life of a coal miner’s wife was far from easy and it made sense for miners to marry the daughters of the industry.

“Such families often lived in poor conditions, with a

60

husband who worked long hours and who would often come home to sleep when the rest of the household was still working.

“The logistics of organising this complex home-life fell to the woman and she was required to provide the men of the house with a hot meal before they left for the pit, and another hot meal and hot bath when they returned.

“Due to the pattern of shifts this could be at any time of day or night, and often there was more than one miner to provide for.

“This was all made more difficult by the lack of running water to their colliery cottages.

“All of the above was carried out alongside the usual routine of household chores, collecting water, baking bread and making meals, resulting in a relentless system of drudgery often lasting far longer than a miner’s 12-hour shift.”

It was more than that at times as well, miners often looking for new work, more pay, in which to provide for their families, and, should they have to move homes, as was often the case, then

this would also fall upon the wife, and any able children/ other family members, to do.

“Mining families are noted in the records for moving house regularly,” continued Margaret.

“The women were frequently required to pack up their homes and leave behind a support network of friends, family and neighbours and start again in a new location.

“Their new lives could be in a nearby town or village, or they could be forced to move miles away to another county.

“There are many instances of families with numerous children, each child being born in a different place.

“(With her husband in Australia for six years, looking for work) Hannah’s determination and hard work made sure that her family thrived, it also gave

her an opportunity to develop into a strong woman able to make decisions for herself in a man’s world.

“These changes were obvious in how Hannah lived the rest of her life.

“Her spirit and determination is something I believe is shared by a great number of women of the 19th century mining communities.

“And, by examining her life, and placing it in the historical context of Durham coal mining communities of the time, I believe I have been able to paint an accurate portrait of the everyday lives of these women.”

Now, for Margaret, genealogy is her life, be it hers, or that of someone else, Margaret Hedley and her ‘Past Uncovered’ business, continues to go from strength-to-strength.

Continuing to do what she seemingly does best, whilst also giving talks on the topic,

61

of her own family history primarily, there is actually, more than rumoured talk, that a third book is close to fruition, bringing that part of her family’s story full circle, and will cover the period between, approximately, 1940-1970.

Overall therefore, they’ll cover both her family, and that of the Durham Coalfield, up to the closure of the pits in the late sixties.

“I have carried out research for people from all over the world,” states Hannah, about the here and now.

“(People) who are anxious to connect with their County Durham roots, many of whom have used Hannah’s Story to place their own ancestors into the narrative.

“I certainly found a gap in the market when I carried out the research about

Hannah but then readers became interested in my family story which led to Hannah’s Daughter.

“Hopefully a third book, which will complete the trilogy and end in 1968, takes us to when the pit closed in Wheatley Hill.”

Having mentioned the talks in which Margaret Hedley provides on her family (see website for more), then the immediate, upcoming events, will see her visit Newton Hall WI (3 May), Cockerton Library (26 May), Sunderland U3A (15 June)

and her native, Wheatley Hill (History Club, 26 July).

with Elaine Palmer

Talented singer-songwriter, curator, and host, Elaine Palmer, brings forth a new addition to her repertoire later this month with the first in her contemporary literature events, to be held in rural, North Yorkshire, hosting that of Bob Beagrie and Bob Fischer.

Residing there herself, Ms. Palmer already hosts musical events at the same venue, the Velveteen Rabbit Club (Great Ayton), and are highly sought after events, whilst she

herself, is a musician of the highest calibre having toured both the UK and the USA during a distinguished career.

Beagrie and Fischer are themselves, talented artists, of the literary kind, with the former being that of a poet, playwright and performer, and the latter a presenter, performer and author.

“I am thrilled to be hosting the first ever literature event,” began host, Elaine Palmer.

“This will have live performances from author Bob Fischer, and poet Bob Beagrie, as well as a special guest appearance from Mel McEvoy, at the beautiful, Velveteen Rabbit Luncheon Club, in Great Ayton.

“I host singer-songwriter events down in the candle-lit, bohemian basement there, and I have always wanted to expand these nights to include contemporary literature events too.

64

“It’s such a special atmospheric space with lush velvet sofas, and Moroccan lamps, which all add to the experience of the performances.”

Looking at the two guests on the evening of 24 February, Bob Beagrie’s latest offering, entitled ‘The Last Almanac,’ is a collection of his poetry spanning the past two decades, and which cover a vast array of what is best described as being ‘shamanic sensibility.’

‘The Last Almanac’ follows recent publications of Beagrie’s which includes ‘Civil Insolencies (2019),’ ‘And Then We Saw The Daughter of the Minotaur (2020),’ and ‘When We Wake We Think We’re Whalers from Eden (2021),’ works that have been translated into numerous languages, across the globe.

Fellow author, poet, and biographer, Kathleen Jones, said of Beagrie’s recent publication that: “The Last Almanac is a dazzling exhibition of the mastery of line, with words that shape-shift through layers of history and language, of place and memory, mythology and spell-craft.

“There’s nothing quite like Bob Beagrie’s poetry.

“The poems in this collection combine the political with the lyrical, to show us the maelstrom we live through, bombarded by images and memes, and the struggle to maintain an inner life that is meaningful and creative.”

As for Bob Fischer, he is perhaps best known for his work, until Spring 2020, of his work with BBC Radio Tees, and his thrice-weekly show covering music, literature, and the arts, along with his fronting the stations iconic, BBC Introducing, and being a guest presenter on BBC Radio 6. In 2018, Fischer (along with Andrew T. Smith) co-wrote and performed the show, ‘Summer Winos,’ at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, before touring it the following year – if you didn’t guess, the show is based on the iconic, television programme, ‘The Last of the Summer Wine.’

Among other things in which Fischer has done, BBC Radio 6 also aired the 2014 documentary, ‘Worms, Witches, and Boggarts,’ about local folklore, whilst his book, ‘Wiffle Lever to Full,’ was published in 2009 and is a crossover of sorts between travelogue, and memoir.

In addition to that of Bob, and well, Bob, Elaine Palmer has also added a special guest to the

evenings’ proceedings in Nurse Consultant and Poet, Mel McEvoy. He, late last year, saw his second collection of original poetry, ‘Wading into the Light,’ published, and was something in which was dedicated to those who work in health care.

Tagged as being “A spoken word event with performances from writers,” Elaine Palmer’s first contemporary literature event takes place at The Velveteen Rabbit Luncheon Club, Great Ayton, on Friday 24 February (19:00). Tickets for the event are limited, on sale now, and available only from the venue on 01642 725383

THE K’S LIVE at

Warrington indie-rock risersTHE K’S - have revealed a wistful new video for recent single “Hoping Maybe”, ahead of an extensive UK tour this March which sees them play at NX Newcastle on 10th March.

A cinematic and sentimental new video that captures an electrifying love story unfold alongside a series of compelling performance shots, the video was directed by Geoff Owens and arrives as an ideal accompaniment to the heartfelt track.

For a band that still believes getting right up in front of people is the best way to let them know what you’re all about, The K’s have finally managed to stay still long enough to record some new music — with “Hoping Maybe” leading the charge.

If 2022 was all about laying the live foundations, 2023 is all about

raising the roof with new music for the band.

After a ceaseless year of headline shows, major support slots, main stage festival appearances at Reading and Leeds, Isle of Wight and Kendal Calling and a run of European dates with Mancunian stalwarts James and Liam Gallagher, the Warrington four-piece bunkered down in a studio close to their Earlestown base to record the first in a raft of new releases.

Live show favourite “Hoping May-

be” is the first in a bold five-single release schedule, set to culminate in a digital and physical album release in November.

Of the new single, vocalist Jamie Boyle says:

“Out of all of the tracks I’ve written, I think “Hoping Maybe” means the most to me. It adds another level of intimacy to our live show, and there is something special in the way we connect with the crowd every single time we play it.”

Alongside the new release, The K’s are also gearing up to head out on a 12-date UK headline tour this March. A band who just can’t help themselves where live shows are concerned — it’s what they were built on after all — the live run will kick off in Glasgow on 9 March. With tickets flying and the Liverpool date already sold out, be quick or youll miss out!

How did it all come about?

All started several years ago, I took the plunge of starting my own business, always been a comic fan so thought why not? Originally named Blue Eyed Devils Retro & Comic Shop; mid 2016 I think it was? Traded for a year or so, a friend of mine joined to be a business partner, roughly autumn 2017, we removed the “Retro &” and voila, our little business. We did quite well, attended conventions and whatnot religiously across Northeast, even ventured down to York! Learned a hell of a lot in a short space of time.

Everything was Ok, until Christmas 2019 and decided after a shocking festive period, where the market was flooded with Pop

87

sellers, that we were to knock it on the head, January 2020 – turns out it was probably a good time, as we know what followed early spring of 2020.

Fast forward 3 years, life seems to be going back to normal and a comic friend of mine was running an event at Barley Mow Village Community Centre, spoke to Andi and we figured was worth it to try, at first it was simply to get rid of some leftover stock. During this event I got the bug back. Changed name again, this time to just comics, a fresh start, revamped whole website everything redone, or as I’ve been saying, reborn. And here we are. Ive ploughed my time and savings into it so I’m not planning on going anywhere this time. Ideally, I want to branch into a bricks and mortar store as well as E-commerce and events. That’s main goal. So, if anyone knows of

anywhere whatever it is, give us a shout.

You are bringing a brand new event to Jarrow with CrusadeCon, but what is Crusade-Con and what can people expect, why should they buy tickets for it?

A few years back Andi and I were approached by Sarah from the George Washington Hotel, and it resulted in the 3 of us putting on an event called Washi-Con, which I genuinely enjoyed organising etc. Being from Jarrow, I noticed a lack of con type events anywhere in the South Tyneside area so that’s the basis of why Crusade-Con came about.

Naming rights unfortunately isn’t anything to do with me, it came from our good friend James Brown, the thinking behind it linking in the Jarrow Crusade/ March with Batman, the caped crusader.

We’re hoping for the usual con type day, traders, competitions, gaming, cosplay and characters, people spending their hard earned dosh.

What stalls/traders are going to be there?

Here’s our trader list.

AK Retro / Anime-Zone / Bawn

Darker Arts / Facepainting by Angela / Fusion Cake Haus / Game Frame / Knits & Bits by H / M&B Trading Cards / NE T00N Creative / PokePals / Craig JohnsonProject Saviour / The Treat Shack /

Zero Collectables

And of course, Blue Eyed Devils Comics

505 Pizzeria will also be in attendance situated outside the community centre for a tasty pizza. Plus, we have Hebburn Helps running their tombola and Our Milo have a stall, both great charities supporting amazing causes. Worth coming along just to support those in my opinion.

All of these have their own Facebook pages and will all be featured on the Crusade-Con event page.

Will there be any kind of entertainment/attractions for people to

see?

Aside from the immense quality of traders and goods you mean?

We have a few things up our sleeves, an awesome quiz running at £1 per go with scavenger hunt implications. There is a Cosplay/ Character competition for the best dressed in adult and kid categories. Did I mention all 3 have cash prizes? (visit Facebook event page for prizes)

We have a Charity Raffle, hoping to raise plenty dosh towards Hebburn Helps and Daft as a Brush with a splash now for Our Milo. Donations are 100% welcome so if anyone reading this is inclined please contact myself directly. It will be appreciated massively. North East Legion will be in attendance for photo opportunities, as well has collecting for our chosen charities – mentioned above. We have the wonderful Nerd Arcade heading over with a few arcade games for folk to play. Still in discussion with the lads from

Ryton Retro as to what they’re looking at doing/needing. We also have a few other fires burning but they’re staying close to my chest for now.

Running these kinds of events can be a bit of a nightmare, can you tell us what goes into organising an event like Crusade-Con? Finding traders is first issue although they tend to come, financing the whole thing, finding the time between home life and “proper” job, but personally, I’ve found the whole “will people come?” to be my biggest nightmare/worry. These traders have spent to sell their wonderful stuff here and it’s up to me to make sure the event goes well. No matter how much advertising promoting marketing etc that goes into it there’s always that doubt in the back of your mind.

How can people buy tickets for it?

Visit www.bedcs.co.uk and you’ll

89

see Crusade-Con on the landing page. Click this and it will take you to the options available. Pay on the door will be in operations also.

The entry cost, I like to think, is cheap, being £2 for adults (16 years old or over), £1 for U16, U3 go free or a family ticket (2 adults 2 kids/ 1 adult 3 kids) for a fiver. Anyone who purchases a ticket will receive a raffle ticket, this ticket will automatically enter each entrant into a draw to win a copy of Marvel Legacy #1 Joe Quesada Gatefold Black & White 1:500 Incentive Variant. These are currently selling anywhere from £50 up to £150. This copy is classed as mint/near mint. So not a bad prize for the price of entry.

My own personal favourite event

When you are not hard at work with Blue Eyed Devils Comics and Crusade-Con what do you get up to in your spare time? Spare time, what’s that? Aside from family life job and BEDCS, it’s hard to come by, but the little I have outside of family life is Newcastle United and Hebburn Town U11s (My eldest plays for them)

I have to put you on the spot for the next couple, so Marvel or DC? I’m going with Marvel.

What would you say is your favourite Comic Character of all time?

Gambit from the X-Men, so much so that I named my son after him. Also, a notable mention to both Venom and The Joker.

Twitter @bed_comic_shop

Is there anything you would like to add?

Not really Wayne, other than a few thank yous. Firstly, to yourself, for giving me this forum to speak about this. Gareth Muers from Devils Appetite for the flyer design. ICE Print & Design for the high quality printing of both posters and flyers. To anyone who has ever bought from Blue Eyed Devils Comics, it may sound clichéd but we really are extremely grateful and hope to see plenty of you through the door at CrusadeCon. Finally, a big thank you to my better half Laura for not only putting up with me and but also her unconditional, unrelenting support.

Victoria ‘Vicky’ Wales - Local Hero

We have to say huge congratulations to Victoria ‘Vicky’ Wales on her recognition in His Majesty’s New Year’s Honours List.

Vicky, who is a highly valued part of SAFC’s Tactical Response Unit at the Stadium of Light and a member of the British Army for 15 years, has been awarded the British Empire Medal (BEM) in the 2023 List of Honours for meritorious service.

Vicky’s work with both youth and fellow veterans across the region, alongside her determined Duke of Edinburgh work and status as SAFC Armed Forces Champion, has been recognised by Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, subsequently seeing her nominated for the BEM.

Having lived an incredible life so far, Vicky has experienced drastic

highs and lows. She started her service with the British Army in 1995 at the age of 18 where she would become one of the first women to join the physical training corps, putting Prince Harry, amongst the many, through their paces while at Royal Military Academy Sandhurst. She has also represented England on the basketball court.

as an inspiration to fellow and future female soldiers, injury heartache struck for Vicky in 2007 after fracturing her spine in an accident during an arduous 12-mile training exercise.

Countless surgeries later – including major operations after a severe

94

relapse of her back injury whilst rehabilitating with the England Basketball Under-18 boys – incredibly, Vicky grafted her way back into competitive sport, entering the 2020 Invictus Games going on to represent the United Kingdom.

The Games – hosted in The Hague, Netherlands – were delayed due to the Covid-19 pandemic and ended up not actually taking place until 2022, which would delay Vicky’s long-awaited return to elite-level competitive sport following her military career, but have eventually earmarked an emotional, welcome chapter back to Vicky’s life. Vicky returned to British soil having claimed bronze medals in the women’s shot put, as well as both the road race and time trial cycling events.

SAFC assisted Vicky throughout her Invictus journey, sponsoring her training, travel and more. This served as merely small reward for not only the inspiring way in which she roused back to a level many of us only dream of after the heartbreak of myriad operations and hospital trips, but also Vicky’s role in the Tactical Response Unit.

Her primary objective is based pitch side on match days to protect players, staff, officials and supporters from any danger, a key cog in the safety team. The protection of up to and over 40,000 spectator’s lies with Vicky and her colleagues. The role is now into its seventh year for Vicky, after her impeccable skillset saw her complete the Veteran SIA Training Programme in 2016.

The programme bears resemblance to ‘Step into Sunderland’, a wider employment programme which was set up by Vicky along-

side SAFC colleague Rob Scott. This indicates the long-standing close partnership between the club and its military and veterans across the region, creating opportunities for work through this manner of initiative, alongside social and family connection opportunities through its work with the Armed Forces and Veterans’ Breakfast Club scheme.

Vicky is now Regional Operations Manager with veterans’ charity Walking with the Wounded, alongside her work with SAFC in assisting veterans with employment, volunteering and develop-

ment plans.

‘Opening Pandora’s Box’ as Vicky herself describes it, the remarkable return to elite sporting activity and the inspirational manner in which so many have become the beneficiary of her high-level military experience ensure those joining her on this year’s List of Honours stand in great company.

As if this wasn’t enough, she has also raised over £96,000 for charity by trekking the Great Wall. As part of her fundraising efforts, Vicky has raised money for numerous charities to help provide clothing and equipment for the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award Scheme too, just proving again why Victoria ‘Vicky’ Wales is so deserving of the British Empire Medal in 2023, she is a real life hero in our eyes.

We are thrilled to announce that for the first time ever the Ukrainian National Opera is coming to New Castle on 21 February 2023 as part of a UK wide tour with the premiere of Bizet’s opera, Carmen.. Coming all the way from Dnipro, Ukraine, this opera company, featuring an impressive cast and accompanied by a large live orchestra comprising over thirty musicians, will première the pas-

sionate Carmen opera this season.

If you’ve never tried opera before you will love the full orchestra experience with brand new settings and fantastic costumes, along with exquisite singing and wonderful tunes that you will be humming to yourself all the way home.

Feel the thrill of love, jealousy and violence of 19th Century Seville in one of Bizet’s most popular operas. Its mix of fierce passion, gorgeous melodies, nail-biting dramatic confrontation and musical wit has found favour all over the world almost since its first performance in 1875. This opera will be sung in original language with English

surtitles.

Love, treachery, obsession and betrayal make a most dramatic and passionate opera

The Ukrainian Opera from Dnipro is especially worth seeing as their creative development has moved forward in recent years, mastering and popularising the world’s classical music heritage and turning to the works of modern composers, music of the 20th century, and in particular the Ukrainian classics.

Producer, Alexej Ignatow of Amande Concerts Ltd. said: “We are really excited to be presenting this opera company to UK audiences in these difficult times. The journey has been extremely challenging, but I am glad we have overcome the many extraordinary obstacles and have now received all the necessary visas and clearances for the Ukrainian artists. The cast has been rehearsing vigorously over the last five weeks, and will continue to do so until the very moment when they will be leaving for the UK. We in the production office are now fully focussed on marketing these operas and raising awareness. We hope to see you very soon at one of our venues!”

Tickets are priced at £35 - £29, and are on sale now and can be bought from: https://www.tynetheatreandoperahouse.uk/events/amandeconcerts-present-carmen/
