Stanton ‘gone by next election’ Andrew Board and Kate Russell

Mayoral candidate Pete Rainey is promising to rid the city of Lewis Stanton’s daily protest - and the man himself is happy to hear it. Last week Rainey, a three term councillor who is standing against incumbent Rachel Reese, said he will find a solution to the protest if elected or he will resign before

the next election. “I support people’s right to protest, but Mr Stanton is infringing on the freedom of people to run their businesses or just to walk down the street, and that’s not right,” Rainey said. “If elected mayor, I promise to renew the city’s efforts to find a resolution. Ideally, I’d like it to be a compassionate one but if that proves impossible, I am prepared to play

hardball. This has gone on long enough I’d hope that we can resolve it a lot sooner, but if Lewis Stanton is still camping in Trafalgar Street by the next election, I’ll resign.” Lewis Stanton, also known as Hone Ma Heke, arrived in the 1990s with his horse and cart and has been in near constant disagreement with the council, mostly over parking fines. He racked up more

than $145,000 worth of parking fines for parking his horse and cart in the city and refusing to pay them. Stanton has always said that the council abused his human rights when it issued him with a blanket trespass notice in 2011, effectively banning him from 99.46 per cent of public land in Nelson.

Malone now going for Gold Jacob Page

He has a silver and today Liam Malone will be aiming to add a gold to his Paralympic medal collection. At 10.21am today Liam will run in his favoured 200m final at the Rio Paralympics, with the 400m final scheduled for early Friday morning. On Saturday the Nelson blade runner produced the race of his life to earn

a silver medal in the 100m T44 sprint on Saturday afternoon (NZ time) - a performance the Kiwi admitted he produced on little sleep and over-flowing with emotion. Liam surged from sixth at the 50m mark to finish second in a time of 11.02 seconds. The 22-year-old former Nayland College pupil qualified second for the final in a time of 10.90 seconds, but only used the 100m
