Every year my family and I plan a couple of trips away to different places in the Marlborough Sounds and Golden Bay, it’s one of the major attractions of living in the top of the South Island. We book a bach, do a big shop, pack the car and head off to tackle those windy roads.

For David and Haylee Eagle and their family, it’s slightly less complicated. They simply lift the anchor and sail to the

With no boating experience, the Eagles took a leap of faith and bought a boat last summer and have spent the majority of their time living on it since. An idea that many might find too hard, this family have made their dream a reality, even with four kids, two dogs and two birds on board. With 4G internet in many bays in the Sounds the Eagles are able to work, home school and explore one of the

most beautiful parts of the world. Their picturesque images on pages 16 - 19 show what an incredible time they’re having as a family.

For those of us still in Nelson, the Nelson Arts Festival starts this month. The calendar is packed with some amazing shows, workshops and exhibitions, but the most compelling has got to be the giant ice block suspended from a crane above Port Nelson with people dancing on it.

This month will also mark the end of an era for the region with Nelson’s first female mayor, Rachel Reese, saying goodbye to the job she’s had for the past nine years. We sit down with Rachel to discuss her time at the top. Enjoy the issue.

Craig Hamilton selling beautiful properties across the region since 2004. EXPERIENCE COUNTS.

The consummate dealmaker.

We’re so grateful to Craig for selling our house. We’d purchased (also through Craig) earlier this year and it was our turn to sell…

He had it under contract within days, subject to sale, but this was just as the market began to shift so markedly and abruptly.

Craig excels in this type of real estate environment with his vast experience, knowledge and understanding but it is his deal making skills that shine.

These, coupled with a deep contact list of potential buyers and sellers that might gel with the needs and wants at hand, provide him a unique platform in which to perform.

He got it across the line with his terrific negotiating skills applied at every turn. Everyone had to re-assess bottom lines, but everyone walked away happy.

We now find ourselves enjoying an exciting new beginning in our forever home.

What made news in our region...

Struggle for staff

Businesses around Nelson are feeling the bite of a labour shortage, with an inability to find suitable staff in multiple industries. The shortage has left business owners and managers scratching their heads, with no end in sight. Summer Kim, general manager of Kimchi and Wasabi says the opening of their new Richmond shop has been delayed due to the struggle to find staff, while SKT Tanning and Beauty Nelson have closed their doors and others, like Kismet in Nelson, are offering bonuses to entice staff.

Huge boost for Richmond’s cycleways

Major road safety improvements are on the way for Richmond with a $2.4 million funding boost from Waka Kotahi. The funds will help to rapidly implement the beginnings of a complete network of safe walking and cycling spaces, which is the foundation of Tasman District Council’s Walking and Cycling Strategy. Over the next two years, the council will create and improve spaces for safer cycling on the main roads that link places where people live with schools, commercial centres and existing cycle trails.

New owners for New World Stoke

The Rae family are the proud new owners of New World Stoke and are thrilled to “come home” after almost a year in Kaipoi where they had bought the New World store there. Brendon Rae is a local through and through, he grew up in Stoke, went to school here and then to polytech in Nelson. While working for Fresh Choice Richmond at age 18, he “locked in a passion for groceries.” Brendon says the family are looking forward to being part of and offering support to the local community.

Gill Saunders WOWs again

Local creator Gill Saunders is a WOW finalist once again. Gill has been competing in the competition since 2002 and has even been a Supreme Award Winner. Gill says her background in furniture and textile design has served her well over the years and she has enjoyed entering almost every category. Gill’s work for this year is currently being judged, so she can’t share too many details, but she has her fingers crossed that her work will be gracing the stage in Te Whanganui-a-Tara once again.

Meadows to get CCTV

Security cameras with the latest number plate identification technology are to be installed in the Meadows development after a spate of thefts. After seeing how effective the installation of cameras was in combatting theft in Brightwater, Meadows resident Pat Lithgow was prompted into action to do the same for his community. He has rallied Richmond Community Patrol and local building companies to organise the $25,000 needed for the cameras and surveillance system.

New top police commander welcomed

A new police District Commander, Superintendent Tracey Thompson, Te Aitanga a Hauiti and Ngāti Whakaue, has been welcomed to the Tasman district. Tracey, who joined the police in 1995, is a highly respected member who has held a range of uniformed roles in Police National Headquarters, at the Royal New Zealand Police College and in Wellington District. Now, after 13 years away, Tracey, who started in Nelson as a constable and left as a sergeant, is excited to return to the Tasman District where she has whānau.

If I could...

You may recognise Noël Jelsma from the Nelson Market, where you’ll find him and his wife Teena selling their famous black garlic. Noël talks to us about dreams of cricket stardom, Queen fandom and where he’d love to ‘slowly’ travel.

If I could tell my younger self one thing, it would be...

(Apart from buy and hold Apple, Amazon and Tesla shares?!) The more serious advice would be to keep practising – develop your skills/hobbies – it doesn’t really matter what in. In my case, I regret never fully mastering the guitar. My father is an amazing guitarist and has played in various bands and music groups, and although I’ve owned a guitar since the age of nine, and from time to time would have a few songs I could play, I never stuck at it long enough to get to an enjoyable level.

If I could have lunch with three people, they would be…

Oh, definitely the surviving members of Queen! I sat glued to the TV screen when Bohemian Rhapsody first came out in 1975. I’ve been a huge Queen fan ever since – seeing the original line-up with Freddie Mercury live at Mt Smart stadium in 1985 was such an amazing experience. I stood slack-jawed soaking in every second of the experience, while the friend who had travelled down with me from Whangarei on the “Concert Bus” was getting very friendly with a girl he met at the concert. More recently I’ve seen Queen and Adam Lambert live in concert - still epic!

If I could have any job, it would be…

Ever since I was a boy, I always wanted to be a chef or a pilot. I moved on from being a pilot – but still liked the idea of being a gourmet chef. I’ve always loved cooking and trying new and interesting flavour combinations. Having said that, I’m not sure I could handle working as hard as most chefs do. After a career in technology and software sales I’m now in the food business – producing black garlic products – so maybe this is the next best thing.

If I could have a superpower, it would be…

As a teenager, I remember having the most amazingly vivid dreams of flying. Not really like superman – but something requiring real effort and focus. I was always so disappointed when I’d wake up and find I was still unable to disregard gravity! So, it would have to be the power of flight. Soaring like a bird. Amazing.

If I could be famous for something, it would be… Being an international cricket star! I’ve played social forms of cricket all my life, from twilight cricket in Whangarei, to indoor and Saturday social cricket, including twice representing Singapore at the World Masters Indoor Cricket tournaments. Unfortunately, my enthusiasm for the sport far exceeds my abilities. But it’s certainly true that you don’t have to be good at something to love doing it.

If I could only take one thing to a desert island, it would be…

Hmmm tough one… how’s the cell coverage?

If I could visit any country in the world, it would be…

I’d really like to go back and spend several months travelling slowly around India and China. There is such incredible diversity of culture and life to be experienced there. The people are amazing, the food incredible –however the usual speed of tourist travel rarely allows for a full experience. While I had the opportunity to enjoy some amazing hospitality during business trips to China, you really need more time to get beyond the airport/hotel/office loop, typical of a business trip.

If I could eat only one meal for the rest of my life, it would be…

Wow – some serious opportunity cost with this one! I’m staying in Asia with a steaming hot plate of Char Koay Teow – wok-fried flat noodles, really popular in Malaysia/ Singapore. Such amazing street food all over Southeast Asia. The hawker centres in Singapore have multiple small kitchens – each producing a particular product. You could always tell the favourites by the length of the queue!

Back in New Zealand, barbecued pork ribs with a spicy/ smoky sauce come a close second. Not many greens in my selection – but there you go.

with The Mortgage Supply Company financial advisor Vanessa McGovern

The Mortgage Supply Company was founded by one of the country’s leading mortgage advisers, David Windler, 15 years ago. The company has a number of advisers based in Auckland, it also has strong presence around the country and a new office in Nelson. Financial Advisor for Nelson, Vanessa McGovern, sits down with Nelson Magazine to talk about house finance.

As one of the younger female advisors in the country, can you share with our readers a little bit about yourself and what drives your passion within the industry?

I am a mum of two young children, a wife to an amazing, supportive husband, and I absolutely love our region we live in. I have always been fascinated with numbers and helping people better themselves, therefore I chose a career that does both. A mortgage is one of the biggest decisions you will make in your life, I want to make sure everyone is educated on the best product for their aspirations, and I want to empower Kiwis to access these easily.

Can you describe what it is a mortgage broker does, and how can you help your clients?

A mortgage broker takes the stress away from getting the best product for your lending. We provide the knowledge, save you time and money, and reduce your stress. Not all lenders have the same products and if you do not ask someone with a range of knowledge, you will not get a range of advice. We work with 27 different lenders, matching you with one who best suits your goals and aspirations. We gather your information required, approach the

correct lender, and negotiate on your behalf. For the life of your loan, we remain by your side during your property journey, ensuring you still have the correct product in place. As your life aspirations change, so can your lending, and we are there to support this. You relax, while we take care of everything.

What sets The Mortgage Supply Company apart from others in the field?

Our customer service, commitment, and lending expertise. We are flexible with time and location - you wouldn’t get a bank lender visiting or video calling you at 7pm at night or on the weekend, like we will. We build long term relationships with you and your family to ensure that while you have a loan, we are by your side continuously checking in to make sure it still matches your lifestyle and goals. We offer advice from the beginning to end, including on refixes and structures.

What advice can you give people?

There is a range of ways but the easiest is to pick up the phone or drop me an email. Educate yourself, reach out to the experts who do know and ask for advice. We are here to help you get the best possible mortgage for you.

Taking family life to the sea

Living on a boat is the stuff dreams are made of. One Nelson family of two adults, four children, two dogs and two birds turned their dream into reality and say their time living on a boat has been an adventure.

Words: Adrienne Matthews

onset of Covid with its subsequent lockdowns had Haylee and David Eagle thinking harder about an idea that had been brewing for some time. For many years it has been a family tradition to go camping at Bethany Park in Kaiteriteri, but on their last visit the tent ripped and they were faced with the question of what to do next.

The

A lot of their friends were buying caravans. They’d come and park next to the Eagles and set up in five minutes, while they lost half a day erecting tents and another day packing them back down. So they began looking at caravans, thinking that would be their next thing. But the brutal reality of being in one with four kids, two dogs and two birds was a bit “daunting”.

Whilst that conversation was happening, they were also having another one around their living situation. Their home was bought two decades ago, before children and when the cost of a house was roughly what a deposit for one is now. They had thought of selling it and buying something bigger. In fact, they even attended a few open homes. “But we soon discovered that if we did sell, we’d essentially

be buying a renovation and we’d already done that once,” says David.

At one open home, their eldest daughter Sophia asked her parents why they wanted a bigger home. “We’d just be further apart.”

“The children were happy sharing bedrooms,” says Haylee. “We decided it was time to stop looking at other houses and upgrade our lifestyle instead.”

A bach in the Marlborough Sounds seemed a good idea. They could keep their home in town and have a little getaway.

Properties, however, were dramatically increasing in price and the roads in the area were becoming storm ravaged. “There were some coming onto the market but you couldn’t get into them unless you had a boat,” says David.

Then it dawned on them: Why get a bach when they could get a floating one?

Although David had no experience with life at sea, Haylee’s early years had been spent around boats on Lake Taupo where her father had a marine business.

David and Haylee Eagle with their children Sophia, Max, Alex and Maia on board their boat In Havelock. Tessa Jaine
16 October 2022

“I grew up on boats and that was my happy place,” she says.

The couple researched carefully what kind of boat was going to work for them. “We weren’t brave enough to jump into a sailboat,” says David. “That would have been too big a learning curve, especially with all the children, so we settled on a coastal-rated twelve-mile inshore vessel. We can’t go to the likes of Fiji, but we can go all around New Zealand.”

They had been looking “for ages” but eventually were at the right place at the right time.

“We saw the ‘Oriental Lady’ on Trade Me an hour after the previous owner had listed it. We picked up the kids from school and by 4:30pm we were in Havelock. By 5pm we’d agreed to purchase it,” says Haylee.

The boat has a deep semi-displacement hull. This makes it slow, but very stable and all-weather capable. Built in 1989 it is solid, seaworthy and around seventeen metres in length. There are three cabins for the children which each have a spare bunk, meaning Max, the youngest, can choose which of his siblings he wants to sleep with. David and

Haylee’s cabin is at the other end of the boat and has its own ensuite.

The kitchen and main living area are in the middle of the boat. The kitchen has a stove, oven and standard fridge/freezer so with the help of chilly bins for fresh fruit and veges they can stay out at sea for weeks, says Haylee. “We also have a covered outdoor kitchen and table where we BBQ and eat in the summer.”

The previous owners, Ross and Janet, offered to help David learn to drive and maintain the boat. “They were so gracious,” he says. “We went out together on three trips and Ross taught me everything I needed

to know. I have always been interested in how things worked and am quite practical, which helps.”

The matter of who was going to be first mate soon came up. It couldn’t be Haylee as she is responsible for the children’s safety, but Sophia, then thirteen, was keen. She is about to sit her Day Skipper’s licence and will eventually be able to drive the boat, before she can drive a car.

The first time the family came back into the harbour at Havelock the previous owners came over to help guide them in. “The local community on our pier were there in force as well and were really

Our life now is full of options. We made a choice to make memories with our family in a different way. There is nothing better.

supportive,” says David. “It is a strong community and lovely to be part of.”

The family now try to spend as much time as possible on the boat. “Covid taught us that our marketing business, ‘The Big Picture’, could still function incredibly well no matter where we were based,” says David. “At the start of lockdown, I rushed to Mitre 10 and loaded up thirteen bags of concrete for a project at home, but the business suddenly went crazy with everyone wanting to know how they could improve and increase their online presence. “I’ve still got those thirteen bags of concrete sitting there,” he laughs.

Each day on the boat starts before sun-up when daughter Maia and David get the tender ready and take the dogs to the nearest beach. Then they are back for breakfast before school starts for Haylee and the kids. Schooling is a very important part of this adventure for the family.

“We have found that the children do really well at online learning,” says Haylee. “They are disciplined and self-motivated and work well wherever we are, so we are home-schooling them this year. It is a great advantage to have them spend more time outdoors discovering their own independence.

“Art, physical education and the natural sciences are easy out on the boat. The kids love learning about the sea, the environment, the weather and all of the technical aspects of running a boat. They bring heaps of crafty stuff and books so are never short of a range of activities depending on the weather, or their mood.”

Around noon the paddle boards and kayaks drop into the water and it’s off the boat paddling, swimming or walking trails until a late lunch around 2pm. “One of our best experiences has been parking up in a bay and spending the day exploring the surrounding bush,” David says. “Making a fire and cooking dinner on the beach in the rain was really special for all of us and then we even got to see the magic of phosphorescence on the water while paddling back to the boat. What could be better than that?”

Afternoons vary depending on the weather and the season, or even whether or not it’s time to move to

another bay or anchorage. In the evenings the kids will play a game, do craft activities or watch a movie whilst David and Haylee get another block of work done.

“Living this way we do a lot more as a family,” says David. “Even though the days are busy, the time seems to go slower. Being up before dawn we tend to make use of the whole day. There is a lot more teamwork and responsibility required and the children are cultivating a keen sense of independence, as they explore the places we visit onshore.”

Asked what part of the adventure they love best, Alex says “the swimming in summer, building huts and exploring,” while Sophia adds, “the views change every day, but it is always beautiful being on the water.”

“I love that I have my own room on the boat and exploring with the dogs every day,” says Maia, while the youngest, Max, loves it all.

Maintenance is a regular part of living at sea. The boat is over 30 years old, which means it was built to last, but it has also been used in the sea for three decades. The family have kept up with the previous owner’s rigorous maintenance schedule and paid special attention to the power systems, as they say they are a lot more energy hungry than Ross and Janet. They are also learning to do as much of the mechanical maintenance themselves so they are more self-sufficient at sea in the event something blows or breaks. They carry a lot of spare parts and a full workshop.

With the best part of a year at sea living this rich digital nomad lifestyle and still running a business, David says they really do have the “best of both worlds”.

To document their new lifestyle the couple have set up Instagram, YouTube and Facebook pages under Knot Nauti. “We have become obsessed with knots since starting on this journey, so the name seemed appropriate, and we are not particularly nautical… yet!” laughs Haylee.

“Our life now is full of options,” says David. “We made a choice to make memories with our family in a different way. There is nothing better.”

Hanging up her mayoral chains

In a matter of days Rachel Reese will exit her office as mayor of Nelson for the final time. After nine years, plenty of highs and few lows, the city’s first female mayor will be heading towards a new challenge. Nelson Magazine’s Andrew Board sat down with Rachel to discuss her time at the top.

For the first time since the 2004 local body elec tion, Rachel Reese is not running.

The three-term mayor, one term deputy mayor and one-term “councillor in the naughty corner” is stepping out of politics (she swears she isn’t running for central government).

She says she plans to spend more time with her mum, more time with her husband and use some time to relax. She refuses to say what’s coming next but the half-smile suggests she has a fair idea.

Of the words used to describe Nelson’s first female mayor, “unorganised” is not one of them.

Rachel is a meticulous planner, so it seems safe to assume her next challenge is well known to her, even if she doesn’t want to share it with a nosy journalist.

What she does want to talk about is her achievements, and without question, they are many. She points to the council’s improved relationship with iwi, investments in infrastructure, continued support of the arts.

She says she’ll miss the job but is looking forward to a break.

Unlike a prime minister, you don’t have (mostly) loyal party members on your team. As a mayor you’re lumped with whoever the voters elect. That leaves the mayor often trying to gain a consensus with councillors who have very different views of the world. Rachel has seen both sides of that and she has rubbed some of her colleagues up the wrong way, despite her protestations to the contrary. “We’ve always tried to work with all councillors for the benefit of the city and its residents.”

But there are criticisms.

Some current councillors spoken to by Nelson Magazine say Rachel can be hard to work with and the culture at council this term has been described as “toxic”. But other councillors said it was Rachel who helped get things done and was able to ensure they had a consensus on issues.

Her first deputy mayor, Paul Matheson, says Rachel has been a “steady” mayor.

“She’s a process mayor, she’s not flamboyant, she’s quite risk-adverse. Sometimes she gets on a bandwagon and takes off and forgets that there’s people that want to be passengers as well.”

However, he went on to say that “in just about every aspect, she has been a good leader”.

Her second, and final, deputy mayor Judene Edgar says Rachel has been a “very good” mayor for Nelson and has a lot to be proud of.

“Her ability to retain information, what’s going on, and legislation, is really impressive. But she reads and reads and reads to keep on top of her game. I think a lot of people won't realise how hard she works. I think she’s been unfairly targeted and treated at times. She has a good sense of humour that some may not encounter. She has a genuine compassion for people and ethos of community service.”

Rachel admits to difficult moments and says the political climate has worsened in the recent years. Attacks on her and her colleagues have increased in velocity and nastiness.

That has been tough.

But, she says, the high points outweigh those low moments, and she makes her case for why she’s left Nelson in a better place than where she found it.

When Rachel does board the elevator that leads directly to her office foyer for the final time, she will be leaving on her terms, which is fitting. Her electoral success has frustrated her opponents over the years, and she believes that, if she stood, she could have won next month’s election too.

Rachel entered Nelson City Council on the Hands Up ticket in 2007. Hands Up aimed to be a breath of fresh air for Nelson, bringing new ideas and a positive approach to governing the city. Hands Up’s mayoral candidate that year, Kerry Marshall, was elected and he made Rachel his deputy and – it seemed – heir apparent.

Three years later when Rachel went for the mayoralty, she was up against two of her former Hands Up colleagues, Kerry and Aldo Miccio.

Aldo won. Kerry was out, and Rachel was defeated in the mayoral race but was elected as the highestpolling councillor.

Thus began Rachel’s time in the “naughty corner”, a term she coined after being demoted by Aldo midterm. She described the demotion as “humiliating”, but she says it fuelled her desire to stand again in 2013.

This time she finished on top, beating Aldo to become the city’s first female mayor.

Her election promises included investment in the “forgotten communities” of Stoke and Tāhunanui as well as her support for the contentious Southern Link. At her campaign launch at the Boathouse she told the 180-strong crowd that “building a southern link would be investing wisely in Nelson's future”.

Three years later she beat Pete Rainey comfortably. She stood on addressing the backlog of infrastructure projects, to progress “city-to-sea” developments, to re-double efforts to regenerate Stoke and Tāhunanui and to focus more on affordable living for families. She

again backed the construction of the Southern Link.

In 2019 she faced her most crowded field yet, beating three of her council colleagues along the way.

Despite all of the election successes, Rachel says she gets incredibly nervous around election day.

“Part of that is because you have this team of people who have worked their guts out for you to help you get elected. It’s a big deal to support an election campaign. Fortunately, I had a husband who was prepared to play a really big part in my election campaigns along with a lot of really, really good people in this community.”

Rachel’s husband Richard is a former professional cricket player and she says when the nerves started to kick in right before an election he’d give her “the talk”.

“He’d say, ‘well you’re not about to walk out to the wicket with a 6 foot 4 inch West Indian about to knock your head off, what’s your problem?’”

She acknowledges that standing for an election is a highly competitive game.

“You don’t do it unless you have a significant degree of competitiveness, because there’s nowhere to hide.”

But when election wins come in, they are a big high. The euphoria after her big mayoral election win in 2016 over Pete Rainey was plain to see as she celebrated with a glass of champagne at her home on the Grampians.

Once the thrill of election day is over though, the very serious challenge of governing comes to the fore.

She says the effectiveness of any council is the ability to compromise with a broad range of councillors, something that can lead to frustration.

“I didn’t get all the things through the council chamber that I would have liked. Things take longer than I wanted, and some decisions get made that I don’t think are the right decisions, but that’s local government.”

She says there are plenty of challenges around governing at a local level, one is the three-year electoral cycle that she says engenders a stopstart approach.

“From an infrastructure perspective you need a longer-term, more consistent view.”

Rachel’s final weeks as mayor have hardly been a stroll to the finish line. In August, devastating floods and landslides ensured she was busy until the end.

As her tenure comes to a close, she says there will be many things she misses. The staff, her executive assistant Jenny Tyne, whom she has formed a close friendship with, and her role welcoming new citizens as part of the council ceremony.

“That’s something I’ll really miss, that is such a joy.”

Election Day is October 8 with a new mayor expected to be sworn in the following week.

Nelson Arts Festival on ice and on show

Comedy, drama, thrilling colour and thought-provoking entertainment will ensure the 28th Nelson Arts Festival is one to remember. Oh, and the big chunk of ice suspended above Port Nelson. Judene Edgar finds out more.

Festivals

are a creative melting pot of creativi ty, culture, and talent, connecting makers with their audience in unique and unexpected ways and after two years of disruptions, the Nelson Arts Festival is back and tackling the ongoing impacts of Covid head-on with over 200 artists bringing to life 58 unique events over eleven days.

Artistic director Lydia Zanetti says that the arts help us celebrate as a community, be empathetic to other people’s experiences, and connect across distances.

“Nelson Arts Festival hopes to respond to this moment, with all its joys and sorrows, challenges and opportunities. In such uncertain times, we look to create a festival which can help us focus on the most important things in life - and be okay sitting with inevitable change.”

Audiences will be enthralled by the unmissable experiences that can be found in the most unexpected of places. Everything from exhibitions to performances, workshops, parties, discussions, rituals, residencies and unforgettable experiences will take over halls, theatres, galleries, heritage sites, Kōhanga Reo, and digital platforms across Whakatū.

The New Zealand premiere of THAW, presented by globally-renowned physical theatre company Legs On The Wall, takes place high above Nelson harbour, on 2.7 tonnes of ice suspended by a crane.

Created by Australian Joshua Thomson, to an original score by Alaska's Matthew Burtner, an interesting collaboration between the hottest and coldest continents, this outdoor epic brings death-defying beauty to the climate crisis.

“I’ve always been an environmentalist and Australia’s apocalyptic Black Summer bushfires really affected me. I donated, but

I wanted to use my talents to say something,” says Joshua. So, he embarked on a three-year quest to create an analogy of the natural habitat slowly reducing. After much trial and error, and some amazing engineering, what started as small squares of ice grew to giant skip bin size blocks of ice, and eventually became a 2.7 tonne frozen gem to represent the beauty of the natural environment.

Over eight hours, three dancers struggle for balance on the ice as it dangles high above the harbour, slowly but surely melting underneath them. Joshua says that it hangs over water as it speaks to rising sea levels and that, importantly, it also speaks to time, as climate change is very tied to time and has a very real sense of urgency about it. “These people rely on this thing, but it’s eroding literally under their feet. As humans we exist in a bubble of time, yet the planet is durational, so we don’t often get the perspective of change.” Suspended high up in the air also helps to give the feeling of isolation and desolation that we can all feel in trying to deal with climate change, but “this problem is shared and we should all have a voice.”

He says that everyone experiences the work in different ways. While he’s always woven environmental messages through his works, he says it’s never been so much at the forefront. “This show is different as it borders on activism and can feel like a peaceful protest. Art is activism – it challenges in the right way, but it’s up to people to take from it what they want. It’s not about guilting people; it’s about taking steps and problem-solving.” Ultimately, Joshua says, it’s about raising awareness while providing a spectacular metaphor as an artful call to action. Whipping up a frenzy at its inaugural outing at the Sydney Festival in January, Joshua is delighted to be bringing his confrontational yet inspirational piece to Nelson.

Another artist motivated and inspired by adversity is Audrey Baldwin. Audrey says that the Christchurch earthquakes galvanised her love of Christchurch, and that she was determined to stay and support people by making art more publicly accessible. “For me, art is healing. It’s essential all the time but shines especially when people are hurting.”

The isolation and lack of connectivity that was felt throughout Covid lockdowns inspired Audrey to create Art Chemist. “I wanted to create something interactive that was familiar but new. Everyone understands going to the chemist and getting a prescription.” However, instead of receiving a prescription for pain relievers, sedatives, or stimulants, after a 5 – 15-minute one-onone consultation, you’ll come away with an art prescription – to look at a painting, read some poetry, or immerse yourself in a performance – that meets your well-being needs. “It’s as light-hearted or as personal as people like. I hope to encourage people to participate in the arts and see the value in them beyond aesthetics as a tool for well-being, connection and contemplation. Art is a lifeline for so many people.”

Inspired by the Arts Festival programme and the rich arts offerings available in Nelson, Audrey and her team of chemists create unique prescriptions for each person, couple or group to engage with local art/events. “One of my favourite things is connecting people with cool stuff. It’s all done with humour and gentleness, so hopefully people will be encouraged to go outside of their comfort zones and think about something differently.”

Located in Kiss Me (near Kismet on Hardy Street), Art Chemist will be set up like a chemist shop with

pill bottles with prescriptions inside them enabling ‘patients’ to pick over-the-counter or bespoke prescription medications. Supporting Audrey’s goal to make art more accessible, Art Chemist is one of many free offerings of the Arts Festival.

Another free event is Whispers in the Streets, which will be bringing the central city streets to life with music and visual art. A collaboration of over 30 NMIT students, Whispers in the Streets is their expressive responses to the question of ‘what it means to be a young person in Whakatū in these uncertain times.’ Tutors Klaasz Breukel and Doug Stenhouse have been working with the students to help them fill the streets with “a real surprise of sights and sounds”, says Klaasz. “It’s important for students to get opportunities to connect with the arts and with communities.” His arts and design students will be taking over the Billsticker bollards with drawings, photography, paintings, collages –“the sky’s the limit.”

Doug’s music students are also busy devising and composing a series of pop-up projects throughout the city centre. “This is super creative. They get to make use of different instruments, different forms of synthesis, different techniques. They really get to explore their creative juices.” Using a mix of traditional, non-traditional and modern instruments, the students get the opportunity to connect, and express their thoughts and feelings, with bespoke pieces with the Arts Festival audience in mind.

In a first for a major arts festival in Aotearoa, the festival is offering a ‘Pay what you can’ ticketing model across all fee-paying events. There will be a low recommended ticket price, for those whom price is a barrier, as well as a range of other prices for people who are more able to support the arts.

“This will open the door a little wider, allowing more people to experience and support the arts and artists, and to connect as a community,” says Lydia.

From flying icebergs to art prescriptions, boxing ring poetry slams, Pasifika cabaret/dance extravaganzas to Ukrainian pop musos, night-time adventures and celebrations of our mask culture, the Nelson Arts Festival is bringing life to our streets, halls, cafés and digital platforms from 20 to 30 October.

Collaborate matches volunteers

Volunteer matchmaking team, Collaborate, transformed the way New Zealanders volunteer by connecting people to organisations where their skills and interests could make the biggest difference. Launched as an online platform in 2018, the app has recently been purchased by Volunteering New Zealand.

members, Poppy Norton, Holly Norton, Ceara McAuliffe Bickerton, who all attended Nelson College for Girls, and Sophie Harker from Wellington, were in their early twenties when they came up with the concept and had no idea that it would go on to become a part of New Zealand’s national volunteering infrastructure. “It has been such an amazing journey,” says Poppy. “The idea was born while we were in university and we struggled to find volunteer opportunities. We approached youth charities and organisations and realised there was a misconnection. Through co-design, the app was formed. This development is so exciting, for us, the acknowledgement from Volunteering New Zealand is a wonderful validation. We see ourselves as the guardians of the platform. It was built for the community, by community volunteers, and to see the growth we have seen is really thrilling.”

Founding

The platform has connected thousands of people to hundreds of organisations that need help across New Zealand and internationally. Reflecting on the four years since Collaborate’s app launch, the team say that the experience has been life-changing. “Collaborate has seen young volunteers grow the skills that land them their first jobs. It has shown thousands of people that they have in-demand skills and bring value. It has enabled hundreds of

organisations that do good to be able to access many skills critical to them - for example, everything from social media expertise to front-line mental health support.”

Poppy says that Collaborate has an excellent growth proposition ahead of it as it moves into the hands of Volunteering New Zealand. “We’re grateful for the numerous volunteer hours put in by our stakeholders and partners to get us to this point, and we would especially love to thank our technology partners Springload and Xequals who have been very generous in their contribution toward executing our vision.”

Michelle Kitney, Kaihautū chief executive of Volunteering New Zealand, says, “Collaborate is a tool to bring volunteer-involving organisations and young people together. Our website currently attracts 45,000 people each year looking to volunteer. We see great opportunities to combine the value of Collaborate with our role as the respected peak body for volunteering. We thank the co-founders of Collaborate for their leadership and innovation that has brought us here.”

ON THE STREET

Local business owner Emma Saunders practices what she preaches when it comes to living sustainably. For Emma, fashion is about making responsible choices while also having fun, experimenting with prints and embracing colour.

What are you wearing today?

A favourite floral dress by Danish label Lolly’s Laundry from Shine, earrings by local designer Jude - Kouka Design, and sneakers from Rollies.

What is your style?

I’ve never settled on a style as such. It’s too much fun to try new things and extend myself out of my comfort zone. If you looked in my wardrobe there is print, colour, and some classic shapes to balance it out.

What is most of your wardrobe made up of?

Comfortable, functional items and I love a dress with pockets.

What are you loving at the moment?

Patterned socks.

What are you dressed for today?

Heading to The Green Collective workshop on Bridge Street to pack orders and prep for the launch of two new collaborations. Then teaching pilates classes later on this afternoon.

Where do you buy most of your clothes from?

It has always been a mixture of second-hand finds, swaps with friends, and some new pieces.

I love supporting local and independently-owned businesses. You can find some truly unique items to enjoy for many years.

What is your approach to shopping?

Years ago I stepped away from the fast fashion quick buys, I love taking the time to do a bit of sleuthing on the story behind a brand. Awareness of the environment, conversations on natural fabrics, and less of a seasonal approach. I still look at any purchase, whether second-hand or new, and ask myself if I will wear it a minimum of 30 times.

What is your all-time favourite purchase?

My handbag, made locally by Louise from Kohl & Cochineal.

What has been your worst clothing disaster?

My husband won’t let me forget the day we met! An embarrassing work-to-party mistake.

What wardrobe item should everyone invest in?

A pair of fun sneakers. They go with everything. I love dressing down an outfit with sneakers.

Do you have a style rule you always obey?

Mix patterns and textures.

If you could raid one person’s wardrobe, who would it be?

Absolutely Dee’s (@textile.mixologist on Instagram).

Finish this sentence – You would never catch me wearing… Something uncomfortable.

Stress and immunity

It’s been a rough winter this year for many of us, with a lot of illness around. And while diet, exercise, sleep and hygiene can all make a difference, Dr Marissa Kelaher says stress is an area that’s not discussed much, despite the fact it has a huge effect on our immune system.

Studies looking at how stress affects immunity are intriguing and give us a better insight into the role of stress and health. Our sympathetic (fight or flight) nervous system communicates directly with our immune (lymphatic) tissue via nerve fibres. Even previous stress and trauma can be remembered by our immune system and is part of why there is such a strong link between stress and conditions like autoimmune disease and allergies.

Cortisol (our stress hormone) also impacts immunity by altering our immune response and white blood cells. Plus, stress affects immunity via its impact on our day-to-day life. When we are stressed, we are more likely to do things that are bad for our immune system (such as eating poorly, not sleeping, not exercising, withdrawing from social contact, and smoking or drinking alcohol.

Short and long-term stress affect us differently. Acute stresses (lasting a few minutes or hours) actually help our immunity by boosting immune cell numbers and activity. This is part of our survival response, as it helps our body cope with threat or injury. It’s also how ‘hormetic’ stresses such as exercise, fasting, or coldwater bathing work by creating a short, controlled stressor that stimulates our immune system.

Chronic stress has a very different effect, by suppressing immunity, and making us more likely to catch infections. This is why infections such as herpes or shingles can reactivate during times of stress.

One of the first studies looking at this was in the 1980s, where blood samples were taken from medical students before and during end of year exams. It

showed that T cell and NK cell (white blood cell) levels dropped significantly under stress, and the severity correlated with stress levels.

Hundreds of studies have looked into stress and immunity since and have found similar effects, especially in older people, or people with depression. Another study looked at first year college students and found the higher their stress levels and the more socially isolated they were, the less they responded to a flu vaccine.

Fortunately, there are many proven ways to improve immunity when we’re stressed - they all involve ‘dialling down’ our stress response.

The following have all been shown to reduce stress hormones, and measurably improve our immune function:

journalling

• connecting with others

• meditation and breathwork

• e xercise and time in nature

• sleep

In practice, most things that reduce stress are likely to help immunity, the key is having tools you can use, and making them part of your day-to-day life.

Talking bowel conditions with Dr Omer Hajelssedig

There is no doubt that living with Inflammatory Bowel Disease (Crohn’s Disease and ulcerative colitis) can have its toll on the patient, but taking a holistic approach to managing this life-long condition can help sufferers live a normal life. We talk to leading gastroenterologist Dr Hajelssedig about what he can do to help alleviate the symptoms and burden of IBD.

Born

in Sudan and trained in Qatar, Dr Hajelssedig moved to the region in 2017. Specialising in diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopy, acid reflux disease, bowel cancer screening, and anaemia, Dr Hajelssedig’s interests particularly lie in management of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) as well as irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). “My interest in this spectrum of bowel disease has begun and kept growing since 2012 when I started my gastroenterology training. I believe that there is a lot we can do to positively impact a patient’s journey with these life-long conditions.”

With IBD cases rising in New Zealand, Dr Hajelssedig aims to raise awareness and ensure the diagnosis of IBD is made early. “Diagnosis of IBD often isn’t easy as you really need to be sure before labelling someone with a such lifelong condition. It involves multiple blood tests and medical procedures including colonoscopy and imaging.”

IBS is a very common condition of the bowel in which the bowel structure appears to be normal, but its function is hugely disturbed causing sufferers to have a wide range of symptoms including abdominal pain, diarrhoea and constipation. Dr Hajelssedig says it is very difficult sometimes to distinguish between IBD and IBS as the symptoms are very similar. To date, there is no cure for IBD or IBS but both conditions can be adequately managed, through a multifaceted comprehensive plan of care. “My intention is to improve the level of care to patients and provide a more holistic approach for treatment and care.” Dr Hajelssedig can provide both short and long-term treatments and individual care plans, along with ongoing advice on living with IBD and IBS. New cookbook ready to serve

Local food writer, photographer and lover of all thing’s cuisine, Nicola Galloway has been cooking up a storm in preparation of her latest publicatio, The Homemade Table – Seasonal Recipes, Preserves and Sourdough Amy Russ takes a look at what’s inside.

Due

to be released early this month, Nicola says The Homemade Table is a complete guide to home cooking for everyday use. Consisting of two parts, the first section focuses on seasonal recipes using fresh produce and includes chapters on breakfasts and drinks, vegetables, dinners and baking and desserts, while the second section features homemade staples such as sourdough bread, preserves, ferments and cultured dairy products.

Three years in the making, Nicola’s detailed writing style, passion for seasonal produce, and stunning photography are perfectly showcased in her latest work, and she says a focus on seasonal produce is behind the book. Nicola dives deep into recipes and techniques and includes extra detail which is often left out of recipes. “I aim to write cookbooks that are timeless and designed to be used regularly, including recipes that you come back to again and again,” Nicola says.

With an extensive career in the industry and four cookbooks already under her belt, Nicola says it

is her passion for learning that continues to drive her forward. “There is really no end to learning when it comes to cooking, especially with the more complex techniques such as sourdough bread and fermentation. I love reading cookbooks on traditional cuisines (Eastern European food is my current favourite) and seeing the play on flavours that is used. There are many parallels across cuisines, and it keeps me trying new combinations and looking for that perfect flavour balance in my cooking.”

Nicola says that writing a book is a huge undertaking, especially with her rather detailed way of writing recipes. Even after five books she still finds it can be quite an intense process, particularly during the editing and production stage. “It takes some serious commitment when writing and photographing a large project like this. I tend to photograph as I go, which is more manageable than doing this all in one short burst. It also reflects the time of year and using seasonal produce at its best, hence why I have arranged some of the recipes in The Homemade Table seasonally,” Nicola says.

Her love of food was sparked from a young age, cooking with her nana after school. Training as a chef in 1999, Nicola studied natural nutrition in Canada before returning to New Zealand in 2003 and combining her knowledge and skillset to teach cooking classes, both locally and nationwide, and write recipes for publications. “That was almost 20 years ago. I didn’t really plan to be a food writer or author; it has been quite an organic process.”

Seeing resounding success, her Homegrown Kitchen website was named Best New Zealand Food Website in 2019 at the NZ Food Media Awards. Nicola lists some highlights as writing regular recipe columns for magazines, starting small and local and now writing for nationwide publications. Also, her Homegrown Kitchen cookbook receiving Highly Commended against some big names in the industry. “A big personal highlight for me is hearing how much my books and recipes are enjoyed by others, I put a lot of thought and time into each recipe, so when I get an email or message from someone who has enjoyed it, it makes my day,” she says.

Publishing her first book, Alive! in 2004, followed by Cooking for your Child in 2006, Feeding Little Tummies in 2017, and the award-winning Homegrown Kitchen –Everyday Recipes for Eating Well in 2017, The Homemade Table includes over 170 recipes inside 380 pages with some of Nicola’s favourite recipes and her own personal staples which form the ‘backbone’ of her kitchen. Nicola has photographed and staged all of her own images within the book’s pages. “I use allnatural light and am very much influenced by the seasons. All of my food photographs are taken either on my kitchen bench or table, or in the garden. And yes, we eat all of it!”

Currently focusing on releasing her new cookbook, she says next year she hopes to bring back more cooking workshops, along with teasing the idea of new content. “Although our lives are busy, cooking can be a way to recharge, inspire, and bring joy to our days. I believe cooking can bring a deep sense of contentment, from the process and the eating. Food

costs have gone up, so focusing on locally grown seasonal produce - from a market or produce shop is a good way to keep in touch with the seasons. Produce prices can be a good indication of what is in season. I tend to shop by price and freshness and if that means we end up eating a lot of the same then that is ok, you actually get more creative in the kitchen that way.”

Pre-sale orders are now available with The Homemade Table to be released on October 10 along with a book launch at Rata Room NMIT, from 4pm to 6pm. Follow Nicola Galloway on social media or check out her website: homegrown-kitchen.co.nz for more information.

Spinach and lemon risotto

Having a good base recipe for risotto means you can make it throughout the year using the freshest produce on hand. The key to making good risotto is frequent stirring so as to massage the starch out of the rice grains, resulting in a creamy sauce.

Serves 4

Ingredients:

• 1.5 litres (6 cups) vegetable or chicken stock

• 2 tbsp olive oil

• 1 onion (about 150g), finely chopped

• 1 celery stalk (about 150g), finely chopped

• 2 garlic cloves, finely chopped

• 1½ cups (300g) Arborio risotto rice

• 1 small glass (150ml) dry white wine

• zest of 1 lemon, + wedges for serving

• bunch of spinach (about 250g), washed and roughly chopped

• 50g (about ⅓ cup) grated parmesan + extra for serving

• 30g (2 tbsp) butter

Method:

In a large saucepan bring the stock to a gentle simmer over a low heat.

Heat the oil in a large heavy-based pan over a moderate heat.

Add the onion and celery, and sauté for 5 minutes until softened.

Add the garlic and rice and stir for 1 minute until the rice is trans-lucent. Add the wine, stirring until the wine has evaporated.

Begin to add the hot stock one ladle at a time. Stir frequently, to prevent sticking, until the liquid is absorbed; then add the next ladle of hot stock.

Cook for 20–25 minutes until the rice is al dente and the risotto has a porridge-like consistency. Add a little boiling water if the stock runs out before the rice is ready.

In the last few minutes of cooking, add the lemon zest and spinach, stirring until wilted. Remove from the heat and fold through the grated parmesan and butter. Serve immediately with lemon wedges on the side.

Little River Estate Mac & Cheese

Rich, cheesy and comforting, this Macaroni Cheese recipe is packed with creamy, cheesy goodness, and of course, bacon. It may be a little more work, but the end result is a gorgeous comforting midweek meal with leftovers providing a lunch that all your work colleagues will be envious of.

Method:

– salt and pepper – We used Neudorf Black

Preheat oven to 180C. Cook pasta in a large saucepan of well-salted boiling water until not quite al dente, about 3 minutes less than the packet instructions, to ensure it is undercooked.

Drain, reserving 2 tbsp of cooking water and return both water and pasta to the pot.

Meanwhile, heat 2 tbsp of oil in a large frying pan, over medium-high heat, add bacon or speck and fry until crisp and fat renders (2-3 minutes).

Add the butter and melt, then add garlic, stir until fragrant. Add the flour and stir for a couple of minutes until slightly brown, this removes the uncooked flour taste.

Add water, cream & sour cream slowly, stirring all the time to create a smooth sauce. Stir in mustard, paprika, and thyme, followed by the cheese. Taste sauce and season

Add cooked pasta, stir to combine, and pour into a large baking dish. Top with breadcrumbs and a little extra grated cheese and bake until filling is bubbling, and the top is golden brown (15-20 minutes).

Serve hot with a salad on the side, and paired with Waimea Cabernet Franc Syrah 2019 available at Gravity Cellar Door or online at waimeaestates.co.nz

Leading the way for the future of luxury retirement

Coastal

View Lifestyle Village, tucked away high on the stunning Tahunanui Hills, is architecturally designed and commands expansive views over the Tasman Bay and beyond. Invoking a sense of space, security and serenity, the village is surrounded by generous landscaping and beautiful vistas at every turn. Encouraging a lifestyle like no other, the development currently consists of premium stand-alone homes, and a state-of-the-art Care Centre, but still holds a few treasures yet to be unveiled.

Coastal View saw its first residents move into their gorgeous homes during March of last year, and village manager, Pen Walkinshaw, says the luxurious development is completely unique in its design. “We have been very responsive to market preferences and listened to what people are wanting. With the addition of much larger homes and vast landscaping, Coastal View has a completely different feel to other retirement villages. We currently have 24 residents enjoying their retirement here and soaking up the one-of-a-kind lifestyle Coastal View has to offer.”

They offer a wide range of house design options as well as a stand-alone Care Centre, and a soon-to-be completed specialised Dementia centre. There is also

a strong drive forward for the construction of the Yacht Club. The Club will boast luxurious central spaces such as a bakery, hairdresser, restaurant, bar, movie theatre, a medical centre and library, gymnasium and a heated indoor pool and spas facilities. It will contain a wellness centre, incorporating medical and physiotherapy rooms. Serviced apartments, up to 110m2, will flank either side of the Yacht Club offering intermediate health care options. “It is very exciting to see this come together,” says Pen. “It will be the heart of the village.”

Salesperson Breffni O’Rourke says it has been wonderful to witness the relationships residents have already formed with each other. “It is one of the nicest things, it is magic to watch and one of the highlights of my role.”

It is those moments of kindness between residents that also touch Pen the most. “The residents in the community are very connected to each other. The people that have come here are diverse in background, community-minded and bring a wealth of life experience.”

Breffni helps people to find their ‘best home’ within the Coastal View community. She says seeing their first reaction to the village is a total joy to see.

Coastal View’s salesperson Breffni O’Rourke and village manager Pen Walkinshaw.
50 October 2022

“Watching their faces when they pop up here for the first time is always a highlight. People always say it is completely different, in a wonderful way, to what they expected to find. I think people deserve somewhere beautiful to live when they retire, and Coastal View provides that.”

While Breffni assists with the process of entering the village, Pen then helps to guide residents with their Coastal View journey and life within the village.

The team are committed to creating a warm and pleasant setting for all who reside at Coastal View, says Pen. “Our focus is on activities, connectedness, and a little bit of magic. I think this is mirrored in our residents, who look for the fun in life and that matches nicely with what we envisioned.” From cabarets to guest speakers, the Travel Club and theatre trips, there is always something to choose from. “We run a weekly TRILife Wellness Program which focuses on nutrition, exercise and state of mind, as well as a walking group. Scarlett the Coffee Cart is a permanent fixture and residents can enjoy a barista-made coffee in a relaxing outdoor setting.

The fortnightly ‘Tipple Time’ is always a favourite event as well as the monthly Brunch Club.” Pen says planning for the first Travel Club is already underway and will be packed with premium activities. “These can be extended trips anywhere from two nights to a week. We will start with exciting local locations and grow it from there, but the idea is that all residents need to do is jump into the provided transport and enjoy, we will take care of everything.”

Coastal View offers a new generation retirement village.

Keeping residents and staff connected is the pioneering technology provided by Coastal View, Spritely Limited. Spritely is a single-touch communication system which allows residents to keep in regular contact with friends, family, staff and other residents. It enables people to keep up-todate with the latest community news and important announcements, make bookings for activities, check the weather and play games. The range of services at Coastal View is second to none, with intermediate care options such as The Butler package and Spritely remote healthcare monitors. “Spritely was fantastic during Covid. We could check in and have video chats with residents, and they could keep in contact with their loved ones at the touch of a button.”

Right across New Zealand there are often long waiting lists for people to enter their village of choice. It is important to start planning where you want to be in your retirement years, now, so you are guaranteed to be able to enjoy the kind of lifestyle Coastal View can offer you.

Advances in KiwiSaver

This voluntary saving scheme has now been around for 15 years and as it has matured there have been some positive changes in recent times that you may not be aware of. Mark Sheehan explains.

You can build your own funds

There is growing innovation in KiwiSaver including providers where you can build your own portfolio using multiple fund managers and direct investments. You would usually need a reasonable amount of funds to make it worthwhile, and professional advice would be an important component if you went down this route.

Fees are coming down and some are zero There is definitely downward pressure on KiwiSaver fees which overall is a good thing. There are now funds that do not charge any fees at all for managing your KiwiSaver. A bit like anything though, sometimes you get what you pay for, fees are important but should not be the only consideration for your savings. There is always a balance to be had between cost and the value you get. KiwiSaver funds are no different. There are funds that have low fees but still charge too much for what you get, and there are some very well-run funds that perform better than low-cost funds.

Some ethical funds are more ethical than others

We have been offering advice in regard to socially responsible KiwiSaver funds since 2008. The advances have been great in recent years and there are now some seriously good ethical fund managers. It is still a good idea to get help to look under the bonnet of your provider though, as there are still many marginal defintitions of what is considered an ethical fund.

My

You can’t help but smile when you arrive at Kirsten Boswijk’s home. Tucked away off Annesbrook Drive, the lilac-painted home is tranquil, sun-soaked and surrounded by a beautiful garden. Inside is just as cheerful with colour and collections of ceramics and art. Kirsten shares her creative space with us.

Where is your home and how long have you lived here?

I have lived here on Annesbrook Drive for twelve years. Since the kids have left home it’s just me and the cats, Norton and Guzzie (named after motorbikes).

What four words would you use to describe your home?

Light, fun, colour and home. It’s just home, it’s my safe place.

What inspired this look?

My look is probably inherited mostly from my mother, we grew up in a house that wasn’t like anyone else’s. My home is a collection of pieces I’ve collected, it’s my life. I’ve been given pieces, I find pieces, I create and upcycle, and I love colour.

What’s your decorating style?

Eclectic and fluid. Depends on my mood, it’s changeable. I like to change the look and move the furniture around when I feel.

Where do you shop for homewares? Second-hand stores and antique stores mostly –Richmond Antiques and Eclectic are favourites. Plus, I collect some pieces from my travels, I bought a clock back from a trip to France to visit my daughter.

What piece would you never part with? It would probably have to be ‘Kiss with Flowers’, made by my mother, Christine Boswijk.

What’s next on your interiors list?

Finish the living room, it’s been a work in progress for twelve years. A new fire has recently gone in, and I will finish the space around that.

When it comes to homeware, do you save or splurge?

Well, I don’t save… It’s usually an impulsive buy and if I can afford it and it’s something I love then I’ll buy it.

ABOVE: Kirsten Boswijk at her lilac home on Annesbrook Drive.

HOME

What’s your favourite spot in the house? Either sitting between the French doors or on the window seat in the living room. Anywhere with sun. If money was no object what would you get for your home?

A pedestal basin and a claw foot bathtub for the bathroom.

What’s your favourite room? My bedroom, because it’s bright and full of flowers.

What should every home have? Every home should have laughter and life.

Best budget tip? Buy what you love.

56 October 2022 1
2

Do you have any tips on how to keep your living area orderly?

Tidy regularly, allow the light in and work with the positive and negative spaces.

If you had a day to refresh your home what would you do?

I’d have a change around – in fact, I do it often!

Best money spent?

$25 for Norton. He’s a piece of the furniture.

What do you love about the neighbourhood where you live?

It’s close enough to town, the beach, it’s flat, sunny and warm. I’m a sun worshipper and I love that this house makes the most of the sun. It’s a hidden secret down here, a little sanctuary.

Best memory in your house?

I remember coming here with mum on Mother’s Day to look at the house when it was for sale, the kids went straight upstairs and were arguing about which room would be theirs. There are lots of memories, every third year we have family Christmas here and I love to see the house full with people.

1. As a ceramic artist, Kirsten’s home features many pieces of her art. The birds are part of her ‘Dawn Silence’ series. 2. Norton enjoys sitting in the sun looking out over the garden. 3. Kirsten makes the most of the sunlight in the living room and frequently rearranges the furniture to suit the time of year. 4. The open kitchen shelving features Kirsten’s colourful ceramic pieces. 5. It’s no wonder Kirsten’s favourite room of the house is her bright and sunny bedroom, with her impressive collection of flower paintings on the walls.

Unique glass art for everyday use at affordable prices. It’s what we have been doing as a family, for the past four decades.

Homes by Orange on Hallmark

Dedicated to building the perfect home for each client, the team at Homes by Orange have built a top example on Hallmark Drive that demon strates a classic family home with a modern, yet timeless look. Inspired by the region’s sunny lifestyle their ‘Coast and Country’ build reveals the passion for innovative design and quality craftsmanship that Homes by Orange put into every one of their projects, no matter the budget.

The modern four-bedroom, two bathroom, 202m2 show home features an open plan kitchen, living and dining room with a large set of sliding doors opening out to a covered alfresco area, adding another flexible living space for socialising and family time. Design consultant, Liv Lloyd, and client relationship manager, Emily Ives, say from the outset they tried to design a family home which would appeal to a wider market. “We went for a coastal country look to compliment the region and the lifestyle it offers. At Homes by Orange we can build anything from a basic plan through to the more high-end architecturally

designed home, but we wanted this to be mid-range with high-spec features which we feel is more achievable for people.”

The idea has garnered great support from those involved in its completion, say the team. “A huge highlight for us is how our contractors and tradies really got on board with the project. We felt a lot of support from all of them the whole way through.”

They went for a special feature within the main area with scissor trusses and large windows to add to the sense of space, and bring in natural light, which really paid off. It has been a popular feature that has received a lot of positive feedback along with the feature textured walls. The home has a white-onwhite colour scheme so with the addition of texture it gives it a lovely, warm and comfortable feel.

Continuing the trusses all the way out to the alfresco space Emily says was a hint of genius. “It looks quite gorgeous with the continuation of lines from the interior to the exterior. It really is lovely.”

58 October 2022

When pressed to choose a favourite feature, both are in agreement that is hard to choose one in particular. “The separate lounge is amazing, it is really cosy and something so many people are wanting in their homes. We installed a big barn sliding door to create a nice intimate feel, which is great. Another highlight of the build was being able to use Genia timber cladding and EZpanel plaster for the exterior product. It looks amazing and it is nice to see a local product from a local company,”

Operating in the region for many years, the team have a solid reputation for quality craftsmanship and a dedication to going above and beyond for their clients. Jo Neale has been involved with the business since 2003, and the team have recently welcomed

Lee Babe into the fold, in co-ownership with Jo. “We love that we are a local family-owned company, Jo and Lee are both family-orientated, and we even call our meetings ‘family meetings’, that is just part of who we are. This along with quality, honesty and integrity, and running an open-book style company, is a huge part of our ethos which is very important to us. Homes by Orange is a really fun place to work, and we are proud to be a part of it.”

“We are locals, working for locals, with local tradies, and we are here for the clients. We don’t take a cookie-cutter approach to our projects, as it is really only ever about what the client wants. The majority of our staff have built or are building their homes through the company, so we know our products inside

and out and we are really aware that building a home is a big deal and for some, it is their biggest asset.”

Supporting their clients every step of the way, a client relations manager is assigned and involved with their client right from the first interaction, to help support and guide them through the design process, to the handover of the key. They will go above and beyond to get their clients exactly what they want to build their dream home. Homes by Orange are extremely adaptable and put a lot of time looking into alternative products to add to their range which allows them to cover all options, enabling them to have something to suit everyone, and every budget.

The Homes by Orange team will be officially launching their show home at 1 Hallmark Drive on October 9, and warmly invite the public to attend. They are also running a colouring competition where the winner will be announced on the day and win $50 for first prize. Information for the colouring competition can be collected from the show home in the Paton Rise development.

Gardening advice with Daltons

Daltons gardening experts are here to help. Send in your gardening question and you could win a Daltons gardening prize pack! See entry details below.

I am new to growing fruit and veges. What soil preparation is required for strawberries and what type of area do they grow well in? How close do I plant veggies seedlings and what depth in the soil?

Strawberries are best planted in a raised bed into mounds raised around 80-100 mm above the existing soil level. To create this “bed”, add Garden Time™ Compost to the existing soil before planting. By raising the soil level, the soil will warm quicker in spring promoting vigorous plant growth and early fruiting.

Grow strawberries in a full-sun position and in soil that drains well after downpours. They will not produce sweet fruit if grown in a shady position or if the soil is boggy. Plant them about 15cm apart, making sure the crown (just below the leaves) of the plant is sitting slightly higher than ground level. Then finish with a layer of Daltons Premium Mulch & Grow around the plants.

When it comes to planting vegetable seedlings, spacing depends on what you are growing. Where you are unsure, allow extra space so there is enough air movement around plants and full exposure to the sun. Always consider possible shading from larger growing vegetables such as tomatoes and runner beans and position these plants towards the back of your vegetable garden.

Seedlings should always be planted at the same depth that they are growing in the punnets when you purchase

them. Planting them too deep can cause the rotting of stems and planting too high can stress the young seedlings as they may dry out quickly or can be damaged by strong winds. Again, prepare your soil well before planting using compost (as above) or Garden Time™ Enriched Garden Mix.

HOME STYLING

Asthe designer, I had a clear vision of the end result and quality I wanted to achieve. Tim, the building contractor’s, job was to navigate how we got there. Changes and compromise were negotiated along the way, Tim and I made tweaks and changes on the fly, often coming up with a better result than what was on paper - that’s a great designer/builder team. The end result for 28 Nile Street is a stunning bespoke renovation (practically rebuilt) with high end finishes, and beautiful, practical, living spaces.

Eight broad points to start your process: What do you want to achieve e.g. more space, modernise, a better lay out?

Budget (revised post speaking with experts).

Engage with your builder and designer/stylist early on in the process, it will save you time and money.

Decide who will manage your project. Design. Architect, draftsman, interior designer. Consents and planning with your local council.

Kitchen joinery and bathroom fitout. Get this planned and ordered early on.

Interior design. Interior/exterior colours, carpet window treatments.

Finally, be realistic with timelines, in our everchanging economy, and world connection, there will be delays and curveballs. Communication is key. Schedule weekly meetings to review the past week and plan the next with your builder. These are vital to keep the process bearable for all and try to focus on the end result - it will be worth it!

Property

Bringing style to Nile

Stylist

Ana Stevenson and her husband Johnny Stevenson have a passion for Nelson’s historic villas and their most recent purchase on the corner of Nile Street and Trafalgar Square is their seventh. Ana says she loves the challenge of owning a piece of history and elevating its charactorial features. “A large part of the appeal here are the Cathedral gardens. They are our closest neighbour and our borrowed landscape, a garden on our doorstep without having to do all the work a garden requires.”

Ana and Johnny share the house with son Lennox when he is home from boarding school, while their adult children float in and out. Ever present are Pablo, a miniature bulldog, and two cats, Mezzanotte and Austin the Ragdoll.

Having known the house through its previous incarnations, Ana had a clear vision for the changes she wanted to make. With Bolitho Building, and in collaboration with Bays Joinery, she has created an opulent renovation that doubles as a family home and a working show home.

Ana describes the four front rooms as perfect villa spaces, grand rooms with 3.3 metre stud height.

The rear, however, where most of the family living takes place, was originally like a rabbit warren with dark, poky areas. “I knew immediately we needed to accentuate the space up and enhance the light to make it a bright, functioning family space,” she explains.

The builders took the back part of the house down to its framing, raised the height of the ceilings to over three metres, and added skylights and windows. The owners can now appreciate the cascading pools of light throughout the day and the soothing garden ambience the cathedral grounds provide. High European-style arches have been installed in the hallway, linking the front section to the rear and the coffee machine placed where you can see it as you enter to encourage a warm, welcome feel.

The original fireplaces and historical features have been retained and Ana has procured vintage fixtures and fittings from around the world to add to the feeling of luxury.

It was a privilege to work with Ana rebuilding her beautiful heritage home in the heart of Nelson. Really enjoyed working with the terrific building team from Bolitho Building.

Laser Electrical Nelson 03 543 9222 nelson@laserelectrical.co.nz “Totally Dependable”

The kitchen and main living space has been completely transformed. Ana wanted a kitchen that didn’t look like a kitchen and blended into the living space. Everything is behind pocket doors except the granite bench top, which has a retractable tap and sink beneath. The result is a perfect entertaining space and high-functioning kitchen that the executive chefs who Ana bring in for special events will appreciate.

A favourite part of the home for Ana is the master suite. “It was a place of refuge during the ten-month long renovation,” she says. It has a kitchenette and the bathroom features a beautiful, old, repurposed Italian sideboard and the shower has a miniature inset tiled arch that echoes those in the hallway.

“I designed the opulent dressing room with a place for everything. That and the kitchen will be a showroom, by appointment, as ‘Bays Joinery Inner City Design Studio’ for clients wanting bespoke, high-end results,” she explains.

The bathroom, kitchen and entrance to the living area feature exquisite Italian tiles which presented a challenge for the tiler because each one is handmade and the sizes differ. Ana went to great pains to find the perfect shades of putty in charcoal.

The deck that extends from the kitchen and living area is a beautifully private space that has been modelled around existing stands of bamboo and banana. Complete with an outdoor bath,

sympathetically lit with warm lighting at night, Ana says it is a perfect place to relax and admire her work from a different perspective.

Special features from Ana’s collection of treasures have found their way into the house, including a doorknocker for the front door. It is a woman’s hand complete with ring, cast in brass, which Ana found at a vintage market in Venice and dragged around through many moves until she found the right home for it.

The renovation has created a serene home, framed by the greenery of the surrounding area. “Furniture procurement, considered placement and styling is essential to achieve a beautiful result and Bolitho Building and Bays Joinery collaborated with me successfully to achieve the outcome I wanted,” says Ana.

The house’s Heritage C listing made the project extremely challenging. “The last thing I wanted to do was take away the character of the house, but the process was laborious and frustrating,” she says. “We feel that we have done a service to Nelson heritage houses with a large, carefully curated, renovation.”

Behind the historical Red door

Stepping

through the door of Red Art Gallery Design Store and Café five years ago, owners Suzi and Ant Stevens immediately felt at home within the iconic 1800’s heritage Bridge Street building. “It felt so familiar,” says Suzi. “The historical building and its unique ‘European’ aesthetic just drew me in. We’d always thought a design space with a cafe would be a great idea and the building just ticked all the boxes.” After managing a small community gallery and working in the media industry in Auckland, the couple wasted no time in purchasing the business. “We are lucky to have such a great team working with us who all bring their own bit of creativity and passion to the job. The space is constantly evolving which keeps it interesting for all who are part of it.”

Showcasing work by both local and nationwide artists, Red Art Gallery is a hub for clever creatives, including Suzi herself. “Creativity is a strong gene that runs through my family. Making and creating has always been part of my life.” Working in the miniature department at Weta Workshop, for King Kong and many other movies such as Prince Caspian, are just some of her personal career highlights. Suzi studied ceramics, jewellery and silversmithing at Edinburgh College of Art and began making a series of clocks in papier-mache, culminating in a sell-out exhibition at a Liverpool gallery. “I continued the clockmaking in New Zealand and forged a business at The Christchurch Arts Centre. During this time, I was invited to showcase my work at an event in Christchurch held for

Bill Clinton and his political party. It was quite a thrill meeting them.”

The art scene in Nelson is thriving, says Suzi, with events such as Nelson Clay Week, the Arts Festival and Nelson Jewellery Week creating a platform to exhibit some of the best the region has to offer. “The events are not only fantastic for the artists involved but are also helping the local economy.” In the throes of renovating a new space within the historic building, Suzi and the team have been working hard to ensure as little disruption as possible. “We are excited about our new space and look forward to opening its doors very soon and hosting more exhibitions and workshops.”

Coinciding with the launch of their new gallery space, Red Art Gallery will be hosting a Spring Exhibition on October 20, beginning at 5pm, alongside Nelson Arts Festivals’ ‘Night Vision’. “The Exhibition is a group show of mixed works from some of the artists we represent - and a few new to us. The space will be filled with the delights of spring in the form of many mediums including paintings, ceramics, glass and textiles. We thought this would be an ideal theme for our new beginning, and after the years of Covid it seems very suiting for all.”

Playing around with nature

Driven

by the urge of experimenting and creat ing abstract works, mixed media artist Beatrice Bourhis produces art which is uplifting, invoking a sense of joy and playfulness wherever possible. “Years ago, I visited Barcelona and was inspired seeing the unique and beautiful architecture and mosaic work by Antonio Gaudi. Moving to New Zealand, I started creating with mosaic. With a lot of experimentation, I started reverse glass painting and combined both ancient techniques to create contemporary artworks.”

Beatrice says it is nature, culture and life itself that draws her in the most.

Completing an abstract light installation entitled ‘Below the Surface,’ inspired by the world deep below the waves, is a recent personal highlight for the self-taught artist. “Much of the ocean is mysterious and unpredictable. One moment it gives the feeling of tranquillity and beauty and on other days it can be wild and dark, taking the land back with roaring waves. Creating this light installation was exciting and I like the versatility of how it can be viewed. Lights off, it presents the subtle colour shades in the daylight, as in the night-time with the lights on, the warm colour tones creating an ambient feeling. The ocean is part of my daily life and never ceases to inspire me.”

Based in Golden Bay and working from her workshop/ studio, she says most of her works are sold through art galleries in New Zealand, but she really enjoys it when she gets to meet her customers personally, “I enjoy hearing the stories, why they buy my art works.”

Coming up on the Arts Festival calendar, Beatrice has an exhibition entitled ‘Viva la Vida’ presenting ‘Movement celebrating life with dancing - The joy of being’. Her works will be viewable to the public from 19-30 October at Equilibrium Life Space & Gallery. Instead of an exhibition opening there will be free conscious dance sessions happening to encourage people to move their mind and body to welcome the new season and new beginnings with depth and fun.

“I could not help but to branch out of my style and represent the ‘Dance’ series as most of it is playful and dynamic, and hopefully uplifting. It’s all about movement and the love for dance - the oldest form to celebrate life in all cultures around the world. To keep myself balanced I use Freedom Dance (5 Rhythm inspired) of the Conscious Dance Movement, creating space to transform emotions. That is, and has been, a big part of my life.”

Moutere Artisans

Labour Weekend Open Day

Celebrating some of the region’s finest food, beverages and creations, the talented collaboration of Moutere Artisans will be opening their doors on Sunday October 23, and warmly welcoming the public to explore their unique village of Upper Moutere.

Labour Weekend marks the start of the summer season for the artisans and their open day event attracts hundreds of people from all over the region. It has been running for around 16 years and the addition of a second open day, celebrated in autumn of this year, was met with excitement and a fantastic turnout, with organisers confident in continuing the now bi-annual event. Noël Jelsma, co-owner of Neudorf Black and chairman of Moutere Artisans, says, “We were all blown away with the amazing support from locals and visitors alike. It was great to see so many people coming out to enjoy a relaxing and fun day in our village. It was especially nice to be able to offer a slightly different experience with different crops in season, and the beautiful surroundings playing their part with autumn colours on the hills.”

The upcoming Labour Weekend open day will be the first in a few years to run free of Covid restrictions and Noël says it comes as a welcome relief. “It is so nice to not have the barrier of masks between people. Not just the physical barrier, but also the mental stress of do we/don’t we wear masks. It is heart-warming to see everyone’s smiles as they try new things and enjoy their day out. This makes things more relaxed for everyone involved.” Wanting everyone to feel as comfortable as possible, Noël

assures that all will be welcome. “Of course, those folks who are still concerned or at higher risk are able to wear masks as they choose with no judgement or issues from anyone.”

Jewellery, sculptures, pottery and ceramics will be available on the day, a pint can be enjoyed at New Zealand’s oldest pub or new season wines sampled from the plethora of award-winning Moutere Valley vineyards along with some of the country’s finest cheeses, mushrooms, olive oils, black garlic, and gourmet smallgoods. To help ease congestion in the village, the Moutere Hills Community Centre (MHCC) will be serving as a hub for information on the day. “It’s a great first stop for people to pick up a map and flyer, use the facilities, and grab a coffee from the cart at the community centre before they visit the artisans.”

Making for a wonderful social day out, Noël suggests meeting up with friends at the MHCC and carpooling to each stop. “There is plenty of parking available at the community centre and Neudorf Black (92 Neudorf Road).”

MARKET UPDATE WITHChris

There is no doubt that commentary on the property market is eagerly awaited each month by a large number of people throughout New Zealand. The latest and most up to date information is derived from the data provided by the Real Estate Institute. The data that REINZ provides is from actual sales that have occurred across the country, i.e. numbers involved, and the prices achieved, for property that has actually sold. Hence, the analysis and commentary of the REINZ sales data represents what has actually happened, in as close to real time as is possible. For our part we are concentrating on looking at the data as it affects Nelson City.

So that if you are living, working and investing in our beautiful city, you are aware as much as possible about what we are seeing vs commentary that is broadly representing what is happening across New Zealand, or perhaps more across Auckland.

The latest REINZ data indicates there were 56 sales recorded in August, the median value of those sales was $680,000 with current days on market still hovering around 63 days. The data for August is similar to that from July where 51 sales were recorded and property remained for 56 days on market, however, July recorded a higher median value of $800,000.

Perhaps a possible indication that the bottom of the current cycle may be close - as predicted by some media commentators and potentially closer than a lot of buyers may want to believe. Our team are reporting larger numbers attending open homes and greater interest in auctions , and we are seeing more activity with new listings. An interesting run ahead, no doubt into the Christmas season.

What an amazing opportunity this 39.66 Ha approx. block of land offers for the new owners. Located close to other Harley Road subdivisions just off the Coastal Highway and just out of Motueka. Zoned Rural 3 with views out to the ocean, the future possibilities are exciting. The current owners are running cattle and have spent many hours planting natives in the gully and around the two dams – what a beautiful asset. The land is undulating, comprising of gullies that drain into a wetland at the foot of the property, this wetland is protected in perpetuity.

Owner moved out, so MUST SELL at Auction!

That’s right, our owner has moved out, and his instructions are very clear. Take it to Auction, and get me sold fast, so what a great opportunity for first time lifestyle buyers or buyers seeking great value, if you are looking for an entry level lifestyle block, this is it, end of story. In what can only be said to be a crazy market, this side of Tasman is still affordable for the time being, but it’s only a matter of when buyers start cottoning on to the fact they can add 15 minutes to their drive, in exchange for so much value for the $. Here is your chance to get away from the hustle and bustle of town and create your own lifestyle dream.
