On the Street

Local business owner Emma Saunders practices what she preaches when it comes to living sustainably. For Emma, fashion is about making responsible choices while also having fun, experimenting with prints and embracing colour.

What are you wearing today?

A favourite floral dress by Danish label Lolly’s Laundry from Shine, earrings by local designer Jude - Kouka Design, and sneakers from Rollies.

What is your style?

I’ve never settled on a style as such. It’s too much fun to try new things and extend myself out of my comfort zone. If you looked in my wardrobe there is print, colour, and some classic shapes to balance it out.

What is most of your wardrobe made up of?

Comfortable, functional items and I love a dress with pockets.

What are you loving at the moment?

Patterned socks.

What are you dressed for today?

Heading to The Green Collective workshop on Bridge Street to pack orders and prep for the launch of two new collaborations. Then teaching pilates classes later on this afternoon.

Where do you buy most of your clothes from?

It has always been a mixture of second-hand finds, swaps with friends, and some new pieces. I love supporting local and independently-owned businesses. You can find some truly unique items to enjoy for many years.

What is your approach to shopping?

Years ago I stepped away from the fast fashion quick buys, I love taking the time to do a bit of sleuthing on the story behind a brand. Awareness of the environment, conversations on natural fabrics, and less of a seasonal approach. I still look at any purchase, whether second-hand or new, and ask myself if I will wear it a minimum of 30 times.

What is your all-time favourite purchase?

My handbag, made locally by Louise from Kohl & Cochineal.

What has been your worst clothing disaster?

My husband won’t let me forget the day we met! An embarrassing work-to-party mistake.

What wardrobe item should everyone invest in?

A pair of fun sneakers. They go with everything. I love dressing down an outfit with sneakers.

Do you have a style rule you always obey?

Mix patterns and textures.

If you could raid one person’s wardrobe, who would it be?

Absolutely Dee’s (@textile.mixologist on Instagram).

Finish this sentence – You would never catch me wearing…

Something uncomfortable.
