Does Polyester Shrink? When it's Washed and Dried..

What is Polyester? Polyester is a synthetic polymer and an excellent choice for clothing. Unlike silk, cotton, and wool, it is a man-made fiber that is durable and generally resists shrinking. That doesn’t mean it’s not possible, however, so we’ll show you how to shrink polyester to get the perfect fit.

Why Shrink Polyester Polyester is a durable material that resists shrinkage. This is great if you plan to use your dryer, but less so when you get a shirt that’s too big. However, if you dedicate time and effort to it, you can actively shrink clothing made of polyester. If you don’t need the garment to Polyester shrink too much, you should only need to use your washing machine and dryer.

Does Polyester Shrink? High heat is the key to shrinking polyester clothing. It is possible to polyester shrink 100% fabrics, but only so much. It requires a minimum temperature of 140 degrees Fahrenheit to shrink clothes. Polyester blends are a lot easier to shrink. Check the cleaning label of your clothing to see if it is blended with another type of fiber. Typically, polyester blends are 50% polyester and 50% cotton. It’s important to know this before proceeding with a shrinking technique.

Polyester & Cotton Polyester always comes in a combination of two or more materials. Normally it has a 50% blend of cotton, and the other half is polyester material. Therefore, shrinking blends are extremely difficult.
