GUATEMALAN TRADITIONS
INTRODUCTION
Nestled within the heart of Central America, Guatemala is a country that show off a vibrant and diverse cultural landscape. Its traditions are a testament to its rich history, blending indigenous Mayan heritage with Spanish colonial influences. From colorful festivals to complex crafts, Guatemala's traditions offer a window into the soul of the nation In this article, we will go through some of the most captivating and enduring traditions that define this captivating country.
Guatemala, a Central American country south of Mexico, has volcanoes, tropical forests and ancient Mayan sites. The capital, Guatemala City, has the imposing National Palace of Culture and the National Museum of Archaeology and Ethnology. Antigua Guatemala, west of the capital, contains preserved Spanish colonial buildings.

LA DANZA DEL PALO VOLADOR
It is a ceremony where participants, disguised as monkeys, perform complex choreographies while they're jumping from a trunk that is attached to a rotating base. This dance is inspired by one of the passages of the Popol Vuh, a Mayan manuscript that is considered sacred.
For many scholars, this manifestation is the best example of how the Mayan heritage directly influences Guatemala's traditions.
LA QUEMA DEL TORITO
A tradition that has a European inspiration, since it is centered on this animal, which was inserted in the territory by the conquerors. The raising of animals for consumption and agriculture was not something typical of the original inhabitants of Guatemala However, the modification of the landscape and the economic activities related to this practice have given them greater importance
In the burning of the torito, the villagers make a structure similar to this animal that they later fill with fireworks It is then placed on a participant who dances and chases passers-by around it.
DÍA DE LA MUJER MAYA
In few pre-Hispanic cultures did women retain such a prominent role within the belief system as in the case of the Maya peoples. This is directly reflected in the Maya Women's Day or B'elejeb B'atz.
The celebration commemorates the moment in which the Maya gods created the first woman. This corresponds to the 260th day of the lunar calendar used by the Maya. In this civilization, women were seen as an earthly manifestation of creation, beauty and wisdom. On this day, many ceremonies and tributes are paid to women, especially those belonging to indigenous ethnic groups.
ELABORACIÓN DE FIAMBRE
IIt is one of the maximum expressions of the variety and breadth of ingredients that Guatemalan gastronomy preserves. The fiambre is a dish where soft cheeses and sausages such as chorizo and sausages stand out. Something quite particular with respect to the process of elaboration of the fiambre is that it is a very adaptable dish with multiple variations in terms of ingredients. As is usual with signature dishes within a country's gastronomy, fiambre is a delicacy almost exclusive to celebrations such as the Day of the Saints and the Day of the Dead.
EL TOPE DE MAYO
It is one of the most colorful and attractive cultural expressions of Guatemala for visitors. It takes place in the region of Jalapa and is characterized by its great display of music, dance and color. In this celebration, dancers dance around a trunk with colorful ribbons that participants use to elaborate the choreography. The purpose of the ceremony is to welcome spring in the country and pray for good harvests This type of manifestations are quite common, but the colorful and joyful traditions of Guatemala give it an extra special touch
CARRERA DE CINTAS
This is a horsemen's race in which participants wear folkloric costumes adorned with brightly colored accessories, such as red and yellow. The event is held in the department of Huehuetenango.
The riders wear a characteristic red ribbon, which is adjusted at the waist, and a huge plume of colored feathers. This costume is inspired by the ceremonial costume of Todos los Santos Cuchumatán. This tradition dates back to the time of the conquest, since it was the Spaniards who introduced horses into the Guatemalan territory.
MIÉRCOLES DE CENIZA
Another religious tradition in Guatemala is Ash Wednesday, this day marks the beginning of Lent in Guatemala and throughout the day a mass called the imposition of ashes takes place. In this mass the priest and other delegates draw an ash cross on the foreheads of the Catholic faithful who attend without fail.
The ash cross represents human frailty and is a reminder of "dust thou art and unto dust thou shalt return" .
BAILE DE LOS GIGANTES
One of the most joyful dances that is part of the traditions of Guatemala that take place in its colonial city.
On December 24th of each year at 3:00 p.m. in the temple of La Merced in Antigua Guatemala, unique dancers with giant heads dance to the rhythm of our national instrument: The marimba.
The main objective of this Guatemalan tradition is to announce the birth of Jesus Undoubtedly one of the most joyful Christmas traditions in Guatemala.
LA HUELGA DE LOS DOLORES
The "Huelga de dolores" is a Guatemalan tradition carried out exclusively by the students of the Universidad de San Carlos de Guatemala every year during Lent. This tradition consists of a buffo parade where students seek to express their disagreement or the current political and social errors of Guatemala.
The parade takes place on Sixth Avenue in Zone 1 of Guatemala City and its origin dates back to 1898, when the faculty of medicine went on strike in order to pressure the government to improve the conditions of primary schools.
One of Guatemala's newest traditions.
SEMANA SANTA
It is one of the most important celebrations of the Catholic Church, especially in most Spanish-speaking countries. The colorfulness, which is so deeply rooted within the traditions of Guatemala, is usually more picturesque for this occasion, due to the carpets and processions.
During these days, Guatemalans spread huge handmade carpets that span from the Central Plaza to the different churches found in the Historic Center.
The carpets, made of sawdust, usually show the devotion and Christian faith, besides being characteristic elements of the historical processions that go through the Historic Center.
In addition, during Holy Week, the streets of each of Guatemala's 22 municipalities are filled with music, dances and unique regional delicacies.
CASCARONES DE CARNAVAL
A Guatemalan tradition that takes place in the main cities of the country and marks the official beginning of the festivities related to carnivals. The practice consists of decorating and filling empty eggshells with flour or confetti and then throwing them among the participants as a game. Something quite interesting about this practice is that the whole community actively participates in the process of filling and decorating the shells. This festivity is extremely popular in all departments, especially those where agriculture represents the main source of employment.
SÁBADO DE GLORIA
One of the traditions of Holy Week in Guatemala occurred on Saturday of that week. This day is known as Saturday of Glory and it was customary to beat the children before 10:00 am. This was done in order to make them grow up but for obvious reasons this tradition fell into oblivion and is no longer practiced in Guatemala.
