he following hymn is taken from the Paraklesis Service chanted to the Theotokos during the Fifteen Days of August.

To the Theotokos, let us run now most fervently, As sinners and lowly ones, Let us fall down in repentance, Crying from the depths of our soul: Lady come and help us, Have compassion upon us; Hasten now for we are lost In the host of our errors; Do not turn your servants away, for you alone are a hope to us.

O

n Wednesday, August 1st at 7:00 pm. we will once again begin our communal prayer to the Theotokos. It is once again a time to fast as we prepare to mark the season and significance of the Theotokos in the life of the Orthodox Church. Our fast and our prayer will begin Friday, August 1st and will culminate on Wednesday morning, August 15th with the celebration of a Divine Liturgy beginning at 10:00 am. Also, following the Divine Liturgy on Sunday August 19th, in honor of this great feast day a meal will be offered in our hall by the Dance and Coral School (more information enclosed).

T

he Fifteen Days of August reminds Orthodox Christians about the place and honor that the Theotokos has in our theology. As truly the Mother of God (Theotokos) through her intercessions, on our behalf, she is seen as protectress and healer. It is interesting to note that in the 5th Century there was a fierce debate about her title: Theotokos. Also interesting to note, is that the title Theotokos was an acceptable one used by the faithful for many centuries up until the 5th century debate.

I

t was Nestorius, Bishop of Constantinople and those who followed him who emphasized Christ’s human nature, and who tried to make ill use of the title (Theotokos). Nestorius and his followers attempted to use the title to help strengthen their theological Continues on p. 2 >>>

FROM THE PRESIDENT OF THE PARISH COUNCIL Christ is in our Midst! As I write this article for the August Newsletter my family and I are still glowing after our European vacation. A few highlights I would like to share with you come from stops at Corfu and Rome. In Corfu we were on a mission, to see St. Spyridon’s body in the beautiful island Church and venerate him. Not only did we get to do that but after meeting Father Evangelos the Prostaminos of the Church allowed us to kiss the feet of our beloved St. Spyridon, what an honor and thrill for all of us. In Rome we attended St. Theodore Tiron Greek Orthodox Church on the Palatine Hill. St. Theodore is the only Orthodox Church in Rome (just became a Greek Orthodox Church in 2004) and it was an honor for us to worship and receive Holy Communion in this historic Church. This beautiful little Church dating from the 6th century was built on the ruins of an ancient temple. Of course, we are happy to be home and excited to be worshipping again with our Church family. If you recall in last month’s Presidents message I thanked our 2011-2012 Sunday School director for her service to our Holy Church. This month I want to thank Michelle Capetanakis for stepping forward and agreeing to be the new Sunday School director. As you have done time and time again this is another beautiful example of a parishioner filling a need at our Church. Thank you Michelle and God Bless you for taking on this very important ministry. Last month Father Andrew, Dino Dougenis, Anthony Kyriakidis and Peter Preovolos represented our parish at the 41st Biennial Clergy-Laity Congress in Phoenix, AZ. Stay tuned for an update in an upcoming Shephard and at the November General

Assembly. A big thank you to Kathy Loukatos Meck for directing the Choir at the Hierarchical Divine Liturgy on July 1st I heard it was a beautiful and moving service. As I mentioned in my May newsletter our Church will be blessed on Saturday, September 22nd with the arrival of Bill Marianes who will be leading a half day retreat in our Church hall. A letter was sent to all the heads of the Church ministries from me and Father Andrew reminding them that this is a very important, if not “mandatory” workshop. The information we will all learn from Mr. Marianes will strengthen our love for God’s Holy Church and motivate us all to deepen our faith in Jesus Christ and become more involved in His Church. For more information on Mr. Marianes please read page 9 in the June 2012 edition of the Orthodox Observer. This workshop is open to ALL the faithful of Saint Spyridon and thus, I ask and pray that each and every one of you will set aside Saturday, September 22nd and join us for this awe inspiring seminar. It will be time well spent and you will be blessed for it. With most of our children getting ready and or starting school this month and life getting back to a more “regular” routine please remember this routine must include attending the Divine Liturgy each and every Sunday. As my family and I saw this summer in Rome and Corfu and as Father Andrew always reminds us, “everything flows from the Divine Liturgy.” Nothing we do in our life as Orthodox Christians can be more important. I look forward to worshipping with you and your families in Church on Sunday mornings. In Christ’s holy name, Bill Navrides

viewpoint. They tried to discredit the title by putting forth others like Mother of Man or Mother of Christ. They felt either title would strengthen their theological position because either title emphasized Christ’s humanity. The Ecumenical Council at that time searched Holy Scripture and found the words from St. John’s Gospel to be very helpful; The word was made flesh (John1:14).

S

aint Cyril of Alexandria, opponent of Nestorius, backed by the Ecumenical Council held at Ephesus in 431 AD proclaimed the correct title for the holy virgin could be no less than Theotokos. Bishop Kallistos Ware, from his book The Orthodox Church puts it this way: What Mary bore was not loosely united to God, but a single and undivided person, who is God and man at once. The name Theotokos safeguards the unity of Christ’s person: to deny her this title is to separate the Incarnation into two, breaking down the bridge between God and humanity and erecting within Christ’s person a middle wall of partition. Thus, we can see that not only titles of devotion were involved at Ephesus, but the very message of salvation. The same primacy that the word homoousios (essence) occupies in the doctrine of the Trinity, the Theotokos holds in the doctrine of the Incarnation.

M

y Brothers and Sisters in Christ, as we ponder the awesomeness of the Incarnation, we cannot discredit or downplay the role that the Virgin Mary was called upon to carry out as she gave birth to God the Word. Through her free will consent, she brought forth Continues on p. 3 >>>

herefore, keeping with the Holy Tradition of the Church, seeking divine help through the intercession of the Theotokos, we will once gather for communal prayer as we lift up our voices to her for health and well being. Paraklesis services will be offered at 7:00 pm on Wednesday evening, August 1st and Wednesday evening, August 8th. The Paraklesis service will also be offered at 10:00am on Friday morning, August 3rd and on Friday morning, August 10th. SENIORS

NEWS FROM THE LOFT

Dear Seniors,

Dear Friends of the Choir,

On Tuesday, July 10, 2012 approximately 50 of our Seniors gathered for our monthly meeting. We enjoyed a Pizza luncheon, Italian salad, Italian music, and sharing stories. Please plan to join us next month on Tuesday, August 21st. Our monthly meetings are normally held the second Tuesday of the month, however in August we will be meeting on the THIRD Tuesday, August 21st. The August meeting will be a PotLuck luncheon. Plan to join us and bring a dish to share. Some of our Seniors will be making an overnight trip to the Reagan Library and shopping at the Los Angeles Farmers’ Market. If you have any questions regarding our Senior’s organization, please contact Mrs. Cynthia Samarkos at 619-582-4109 or at tedcynsam@cox.net.

Greetings to our St. Spyridon Family! We hope and pray that everyone is having a safe and wonderful summer. It’s sad to see it come to an end. I want to thank everyone who supported the choir by attending Faith and Fellowship at the Padre game. A good time was had by all. A very special thank you to Greg Kostas for all his hard work putting this event together. Greg, I don’t know what we would do without you!! On July 28th, our choir and youth choir spent time together at the home of Bill and Marion Demos. We ate, swam, and laughed. Thank you Bill and Marion for always opening your home to us. Hronia Polla to all who celebrated their name days in July and also to all who celebrate with our Panagia on August 15th. May the protection of our Panagia be with us always.

Sunday, December 11 Sunday, December 18

Our appreciation goes out to those of you that supported the most recent General Meeting and Luncheon of the year. Kudos and thanks to our chairs Melanie Dellas and Julie Karagianides, and the cast of volunteers that supported their leadership. A wonderful and informative afternoon was shared by all. Maria Rybakova presented a compelling dissertation on Orpheus and Evredike, bravo! Immediately afterward myself and board of directors member Marian Dougenis flew out to attend the 2012 Biennial Clergy Laity conference. The resounding themes of the convention were: • The importance of civic community outreach • Welcome new members and their ideas • Be watchful for families in domestic violent crisis • The rebuilding of St. Nicholas church at ground zero • And of course... the Center of Philanthropy. Please consider ways in which our chapter can be participatory in these areas. Stand by for detailsfor the upcoming Welcome Back Luncheon and General Meeting on Saturday, September 15th. Please save for your reference the 2012/2013 Calendar of Events. Philoptochos thrives with your support, we welcome you to become involved in any of our many diverse ministries and events. Contact me if you would like to help; no gift is too small or too large. Everyone is welcome!

To ALL the Faithful Members of Saint Spyridon Greek Orthodox Church, We have the pleasure and honor to welcome Bill Marianes to our community on Saturday, September 22, 2012. Mr. Marianes will be offering an exciting seminar in the Cypress Room about the importance of Living Our Greek Orthodox Faith on a daily basis and what that truly means for each of us as Greek Orthodox Christians. Bill serves on the Archdiocesan Council and is a vital part of the Archdiocese’s National Stewardship Ministries and an integral part of its Legal Committee. He also serves the Metropolis of Atlanta in many and varied ways: he is the General Counsel of that Metropolis; he is on the Atlanta Metropolis Council and has been appointed to many of its committees. We had the privilege to hear Bill Marianes speak during the 2011 Metropolis Clergy-Laity Assembly at St. Nicholas Ranch and at the recent 2012 National Clergy-Laity Congress in Phoenix, AZ. All who heard him were encouraged and inspired and we are sure that he will inspire and motivate you to deepen your faith in Jesus Christ and His Church. Your attendance at this seminar in September is very important, so please mark your calendar from now. We encourage you all to attend, as this will not only enrich you but your entire family as well. We are asking for your help in spreading the word to your family and friends, and to all your “Koumbaroi” not only at St. Spyridon but to the entire Orthodox community. To have Bill Marianes visit our community is truly a blessing. We look forward to seeing you and everyone you know on Saturday, September 22, 2012 from 10AM to 3PM in the Cypress Room. A complimentary lunch will be served. Please do mark your calendar today and make every effort to be with us. May God continue to bless you and your families and our beloved Saint Spyridon Greek Orthodox Parish. In His Service,
