Greece’s Beloved Performing Artists in CA . . . 4

Letter from the Editor Greece’s Acclaimed Musical Artists, Project HELIOS Dear Readers: This past May, two of Greece’s superstars arrived in California to enthusiastic audiences. Southern Frosene California welcomed Yiannis Ploutarhos and Glykeria Phillips and the HJ’s correspondent Athan Bezaitis interviewed Editor both musical artists during their tours. “This is my fourth time in America,” Ploutarhos shared. “This year is a seven week tour, and all the shows were sold out.” Glykeria also performed in Northern California in Santa Clara to a sold out audience as well. “Glykeria talked about her devotion to the music of her native land, which she said makes up her roots and flows through her blood,” writes Bezaitis. For a glimpse into the success of these beloved artists of Greece, please see page 4. Also featured this month is internationally recognized energy expert Dr. Alex Papalexopoulos who offers a detailed account of Greece’s ambitious clean energy project HELIOS. Dr. Papalexopoulos’ San Francisco-based company ECCO International is one of three companies that have been selected for the project. “Green energy development is currently one of the most dynamic growth areas in the economies of many countries,” he says. “This clearly is the case for Greece.” Part one of his story begins on page 5. Part two follows in the August HJ.

Ploutarhos Wins Over North America

K

By Athan Bezaitis, Special to The Hellenic Journal

nown as much for his affable smile and warmth towards fans as he is for his smooth laiko voice and swooning, heart-rending music, Greek singer-songwriter Yiannis Ploutarhos visited Southern California on May 11, 2012. the night before his show over a dinner generously hosted by Frisco’s in City of Industry. Word leaked about the private event and dozens of admirers poured in to meet him. Without skipping a beat, he took time to sit, chat and take a picture with every one of them. Mid- sentence he would grab their camera, put his arm around the admiring fan, reach forward with the camera, and snap a picture that would somehow come out perfectly framed every time. He chuckles and tells me that he often performs this fete in the middle of a live song. Plutarhos has a delicate way with admirers. Little things like eye contact and listening to what people say can go a long way in winning them over. Maybe it’s a trick of the trade he learned from working in Athens as a hairdresser before his singing career took off. I asked him about it. He nodded his head and gave his signature laugh before sipping a Yiannis Ploutarhos mojito and offering me PHOTO BY GEORGE SILLAS/ some pointers on how to WWW.GEORGESILLAS.COM

Hundreds of fans at the Pacific Palms Hotel in City of Industry left the show hungry for more after a night of authentic Greekstyle bouzouki complete with dancing on the stage, hurling flowers through the air, and singing along with their favorite numbers from Ploutarhos’ 11 platinum albums. Hosted by newly established Power Muse Productions in collaboration with Opa Productions, Ploutarhos’ energetic performance did not disappoint as partygoers and revelers buzzed on Facebook and Twitter in the following days, and clips of the show from adoring fans flooded YouTube throughout the week. Glykeria: The Voice of Greece

F

By Athan Bezaitis, Special to The Hellenic Journal

or the past 30 years, Glykeria has been one of the most prominent and distinct voices of Greek music, filled with unmatched depth, melancholy and emotion. Her 2012 tour of the Americas, with sold-out shows in Canada, South America and the U.S., is a tribute to her worldwide fame, a status that extends beyond Greeks at home and in the diaspora to the French, Israelis, Brazilians, Armenians, Argentinians and others who have heard her belt those powerful, protracted notes. Backstage before her May 19 show in Los Angeles, produced by Gus Sverkos of Goodtime Events, Glykeria talked about her devotion to the music of her native land, which she said makes up her roots and flows through her blood. “Greek music is very rich,” she said. “It comes from many different regions and traditions spanning the mainland to Asia Minor, and from the new world to the old. I try to sing all of the different styles.” When she’s not performing three shows in three consecutive days, as she did in Vancouver, improve my own hair by taking it in on the sides and growing it longer on top. Instantly I too was charmed, like so many others who have enjoyed his music and met him in person. Have you enjoyed your tour? I read that in the past you have performed in Sacramento. Is this your first performance in Los Angeles? How do you like Southern California? This is my fourth time in America. This year is a seven week tour, and all the shows were sold out. This is the best tour I’ve ever done. I love Southern California. It has been a beautiful trip, and I’ve had a lot of fun. What counts even more is that the people have been so satisfied, that’s what I’m here to do. I want to thank Opa Productions and the promoters in each city, including Power Muse Productions here in LA. Tell me a little bit about your latest album “I Dinami

Los Angeles and Santa Clara in May, she relaxes at home to sentimental music that she finds “therapeutic.” This includes traditional Greek music from the various regions of ancient Byzantium. “Music from that part of the world has colored all Greek music to this day,” she said. “For example, look at the distinct rhythms and harmonies of dances from the Anatolian and Pontic regions.” On why she is so popular with international audiences who do not understand

tou Erota” I feel fortunate that it’s been a big hit in Greece in spite of the fact that CD sales aren’t going well. It leads the chart in sales on the strength of the single “Maria,” and now there are a few other singles that have emerged, “Den telifonises” (You didn’t call me) and “Min erthis” (Don’t come). I read that you performed at the Sanremo Music Festival and that you have collaborated with Italian singer Albano Carissi, will you continue to collaborate with non-Greek performers? Singing together with Demitra Theodosiou and Carisi, we won the number one prize award at the festival, 650,000 votes above the others. In this work we did with Albano, we sold 220,000 CDs. In Italy it was big news but the Greeks didn’t respond in the same way. I have various offers to work with people abroad such as in France and Constantinople,

Greek, fellow singer George Lianos, who together with special guest Margarita opened for Glykeria in Los Angeles, offered clever insight. “Greek music is genuine music,” he said. “It speaks to people’s hearts. They come from their own struggles and can relate.” In appreciation of the Armenians in the audience who made up about half of the concert-goers that night he quipped, “It must be an Eastern thing.” Glykeria hopes that her music will also help the Greeks during these difficult times. “Greeks live through music and socializing,” she said. “I know the economy doesn’t get solved through socialization, but it can help the people by giving them strength in their culture. “ Greeks are a resilient people, she said. “They will get through this time, and their Glykeria music will (Left) PHOTO BY GOODTIMEEVENTS always (Above) PHOTO by be with Frosene Phillips them.” but right now I can’t say any more than it’s a very European style of music. How are Greeks from the diaspora different than Greeks from the mainland? Do they respond differently to your music? Greeks are the same pretty much everywhere from South Africa to Canada. Simply put, the Greeks in the diaspora keep deep in their hearts and closer to them the Greek culture and the music that brings them back home. That’s a part they left behind and it still hurts in their hearts. I try to bring that out in them. I have experienced extreme reactions and behaviors from fans especially older adults, for example holding his hand and kissing it and crying. When this happens I find myself speechless and honored. achieve their 2020 RES (Renewable Energy Sources) national targets, consistent with the Directive 2009/28/EC, by offering more attractive investment returns for RES projects. Please explain how the energy export to Europe is implemented. How is it transferred? The transfer of RES energy to Northern Europe can be achieved via two mechanisms: a) “Virtual” or Statistical sales and b) Physical sales. With the Statistical method solar energy will be produced and consumed in Greece but through an agreement can be “virtually” transferred to another country to contribute towards that member state’s environmental targets. As such, this method avoids all problems associated with physical transfers related to regulation, market, operations, transmission infrastructure and coordination with other member states. Even though certain issues, such as the mechanism for price determination, need to be addressed this method is the easiest to implement. At the present time we are in the process of simulating the Greek energy market to determine the maximum allowable RES generating threshold that can safely be injected into the Greek transmission grid without degrading the reliability of the power system. With the Physical transfer, RES energy will be physically transferred from Greece

to the importing countries, such as Germany. Currently the existing grid can accommodate up to 1.6 GW of RES energy via the ItalySwitzerland-Germany corridor and the western and eastern Balkan regions. For this level of production current studies give credence to the claim that the Greek power system has sufficient flexible generation (pump storage, hydro, etc.) to manage the intermittency of RES energy. Beyond this amount transmission infrastructure investments are required. What are the main challenges for the implementation of this project? The HELIOS project is the most ambitious solar photovoltaic (PV) project in European history. It should be viewed as a European project between member states governed by joint agreements. However, if we put together a comprehensive phased-in approach the project is doable and financially viable. The key challenges for the successful implementation of the statistical transfer method of the project HELIOS are a) the determination of the maximum allowable RES generating threshold that can safely be injected and consumed into the Greek transmission grid without degrading the reliability of the power system and adversely affecting the economics of the Greek energy

market, b) the determination of the terms and conditions of the agreement between member states and c) the determination of the price. The price could be determined via bilateral agreements or via market mechanisms. The market approach has certain benefits but it is not recommended till we ensure that the market is functioning properly and market power abuses due to limited number of market players are avoided. The key challenges for the successful implementation of the physical transfer method of the project HELIOS are a) the development of the detailed terms and provisions for the joint agreements between all the involved states which will include the financial mechanism by which the importing member states will support the project HELIOS and compensate Greece, b) substantial transmission investments required to enable massive physical transfers of RES energy to Northern Europe c) the regulatory changes that need to be implemented in EU level for physical transfers, d) coordination of all the intermediate markets managed by the Transmission System Operators between the Greece and the importing countries, and e) changes to market and PAPALEXOPOULOS continued on page 11

Oratorical Festival showcases bright young talent in the S.F. Metropolis

T

he Saint John Chrysostom Oratorical Festival for the Greek Orthodox Metropolis of San Francisco was held on Saturday, May 5, 2012 at Saint Nicholas Ranch and Retreat Center in Dunlap, CA. Twenty youth from the five districts of the Metropolis competed in the Junior and Senior Divisions. His Eminence Metropolitan

Gerasimos of San Francisco enthusiastically welcomed the finalists and their families and was uplifted by the eloquence and poise of the speakers. The Oratorical Festival began with dinner and fellowship on Friday, May 4. The participants in each division presented an impromptu skit on a Bible theme of their choosing, followed by

enlightening discussions with His Eminence Metropolitan Gerasimos and Archimandrite Apostolos Koufallakis, Chancellor. On Saturday, May 5, the group gathered for Orthros, prior to commencing the

ather Pavlos, the senior monk and elder ascetic of ancient Saint Catherine’s Monastery at Mount Sinai, Egypt, was in the Northwest as part of his recent U.S. visitation, sharing the spirituality of the ascetic world with Orthodox and non-Orthodox alike, who thirst for deeper knowledge of Christ. A 1972 graduate of the School of Theology of the University of Athens, Elder Pavlos has four decades of immersion in the living ascetic

tradition of Mount Sinai. He was accompanied by Sister Joanna who served as his translator and wrote an email wrap-up of the NW visit: “Like all of Father Pavlos scheduled talks so far, his visit with the Byzantine Art History students of Dr. Anne McClanan at Portland State University stretched far beyond the scheduled time, as students abandoned their next classes to stay with the elder; the same with the evening event at Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church in Portland.” All-Merciful Saviour Monastery on Vashon Island

(WA) in Puget Sound closed its doors on Saturday to focus on the visit of Father Pavlos. This time Father Pavlos was the one who extended the visit, refreshed by encountering the humility and simplicity of Sinai’s spiritual tradition in the person of Abbot Tryphon and his monastic environment. On Sunday, May 27, following the longer ‘monastic’ Divine Liturgy at St Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church in Seattle, the parishioners stayed for a discussion lasting until midafternoon.”

Gloria was an active member of the Puget Sound chapter of the Illuminating Engineering Society, the Evergreen Health Foundation, and was a volunteer at her children’s school – the Seattle Academy of Arts and Sciences. As Fr. Photios stated, Gloria “had just such an incredible strength about her, and yet an amazing warmth and sense of compassion.” The Greek Community mourns for Gloria. Memory eternal to all five victims! Heartfelt prayers of all go out to the Leonidas family and other families as well.

FAMILY OF EDUCATORS The Apostles, Greek immigrants who settled in Tacoma, produced three leaders in the field of education in the Northwest: Alex, Paul, and Tony. Alex P. Apostle has been the superintendent of the Missoula County (Montana) Public Schools since 2008 following a

short retirement. Previously he was the Assistant Superintendent for the Tacoma School District. He was in Bellevue, WA, recently as one of three heavily recruited finalists for that school district’s head spot. While he was a runnerup, Missoula educators and parents are glad that they will have him with them for some more time. As Toni Rehbein, chairperson of Missoula’s School Board glowingly stated, according to the report by Brian M. Rosenthal in The Seattle Times of May 22, Alex Apostle “has accomplished more than most superintendents accomplish in a career.” He created the Graduation Matters Missoula program to prevent dropouts, which lowered the rate in half and became a statewide program. “He is a man of vision, of courage, of great intellect and tremendous knowledge about education,” Rehbein said. He and his family are active in NW PACIFIC NOTES continued on page 9

moment I thank God for giving me the opportunity to be in the position to have that kind of positive impact on their lives. You’re known for being a family man. What keeps you grounded given your success? The extreme love I feel for my family always comes first. I grew up in a phenomenal family that played a big role in who I am today. I had a poor father and mother that were amazing and proud people. I was lucky enough to find the ideal person as my wife, a person that can tolerate and carry the weight of my fame and stand beside me under all circumstances. We agreed to have a big family even though it is hard to stay away from the public eye. Although this harmony I live in should be a natural thing, unfortunately for others it has proven to be difficult. I’ve never found it difficult. You’ve been described as a “romantic” singer. When I think of “romantic” singers in English I think of Marvin Gaye, Rod Stewart, even John Mayer. Which American singer would you compare yourself to? I am a romantic singer, but I appreciate mostly listening to the old rock bands and their ballads. I also follow the new trends in music, such as Beyonce who is a phenomenal vocalist and singer. And I also really like Bruno Mars.

system operations in Greece to ensure proper balancing of the power system and that the reliability of the system is maintained. The developed joint agreements need to be simple, practical, and transparent, and should balance costs and benefits between all the parties involved. Further, it is critical to ensure that such a joint agreement does not create legal problems for the national tariff systems of the importing countries. Compensation of the Hellenic Republic for the physical transfers of RES energy to Northern Europe by the importing member states and/or the RES investors could be determined via joint agreements or market mechanisms (tendering process). Both options have pros and cons and the preferred option will be determined as part of this project. All these challenges are manageable and are within the scope of project HELIOS. With respect to transmission investments, it is critical to commence work

immediately to identify the interconnection projects that can be considered of Projects of Common Interest (PCI) status and therefore qualify for EU financing. The European Commission has proposed rules and requirements that determine when a transmission project can qualify as an energy infrastructure priority corridor. In the long-term a dedicated DC line for the project HELIOS could be built from Greece to Central Europe. What are the main benefits for Greece but also for the investors involved? The project HELIOS has substantial benefits for all parties involved. For Greece, obviously, it can create favorable conditions for sustainable development and growth and can build the RES capacity of the country. It can create jobs and can be a potential source of revenue of reducing the indebtedness of the Hellenic Republic. For the importing countries, such as Germany, it can generate significant cost savings, by deploying RES energy produced in

For the investors the project HELIOS can offer much better return for their investment in Greece for the same cost of investment due to much higher annual sun irradiation levels. Finally, for the EU as a whole, the project HELIOS could be a leader for similar European projects that can promote the interconnection of the continent to harness the RES energy in the most cost efficient way and can foster the implementation of the EU growth strategy. What is the strategy for the implementation of such an ambitious project? What are the phases of the implementation? The success of the project HELIOS requires an implementation in phases. now in the process of determining the maximum allowable RES generating threshold that can safely be injected and consumed into the Greek transmission grid without degrading the reliability of the power system and adversely affecting the economics of the Greek energy market. In this phase we’ll also execute physical transfers (of less than 1 GW) by deploying the existing transmission interconnections. For physical transfers as I mentioned earlier regulatory and market changes are required in EU level. For Phase II (2018 - 2020 and beyond) the bulk of physical transfers will be executed. How is the existing transmission grid going to support an energy transfer of 10,000 MWs? Indeed this is one of the most difficult problems to be addressed within the context of project HELIOS. Currently the existing grid can accommodate up to 1.6 GW of RES energy via the ItalySwitzerland-Germany corridor and the western and eastern Balkan regions. For physical transfers beyond this level transmission

investments are required. The European Commission has established the rules for the timely development and interoperability of trans-European energy networks to ensure the functioning of the internal energy market, to ensure security of supply in the EU, to promote energy efficiency and the development of new and renewable forms of energy. The proposed regulation grants priority to 12 strategic trans-European energy infrastructure priority corridors and sets the rules to identify, within a set of defined energy infrastructure categories, Projects of Common Interest (PCIs), which are necessary to implement these priorities. Central/South Eastern electricity interconnections are considered as one of the priority corridors. It is imperative for the HELIOS project to commence work immediately and form alliances with other regional and EU groups to identify the interconnection projects that can be considered of PCI status and therefore qualify for EU financing.
